We've All Heard Of Fiverr --------------------------------------------- Message by James James We've all heard of Fiverr. The website that champions the efforts of those who wish to earn $5 for doing small tasks, and makes it available for those who wish to pay $5. It's a great site, way ahead of the field that has sprung up around it, and kicks the proverbial a** off of its rivals. That's the thing about a good business model. It gets copied. Offline, as well as online. Business is business... Now as a magician, who learned his craft so long ago, where videos were still facillating between VHS and Betamax, books and magazines were the only way to learn (after personal tuition and buying 'tricks'). But... Since the advent of the internet through and all that it brings, the time is right for a Fresh New Platform. http://www.sleightz.com Yes, just like Fiverr it puts the management, onus, and uploading of your very own creations, in your hands. With your creation being a digital product, teaching what has been purchased, it will be available 24/7 365 days of the year, and with no shipping to consider, no stock to hold, it will become a very cost effective platform for you to earn money (even whilst you sleep) from your efforts and creations that you upload. As Sleightz is a fresh new platform, we are making it possible for the first 50 pieces of magic by magicians to list their unique magic creations for FREE. Fiverr attracts a huge amount of people and makes a great deal of money for those who work at it. Fiverr also levies a small administration charge, as we will (as said, the first 50 pieces of magic uploaded are FREE), but it will be small enough to not be noticed, and big enough to help us move forward and make Sleightz.com the place where Magicians Share Magic that magicians will perform. So go to http://www.sleightz.com and see what all the fuss is about. There you will be able to register as one of the first 50, and start earning $$$ when we go live later next month. Thanks and look forward to hearing from you. James James for MagicNews PS: We are running a competition that has at the time of writing, with two weeks to go at http://www.magicnewstelevision.com to herald its new rollout later in November. James James is competitioning all of his busking gear, (Gazzo Pouch, cups, table, coins, and Mark Masons Three Fly, as well as some cool digital downloads) away. As it has been running a couple of weeks, contestants have been putting pedal to metal, but registering and joining in, will still guarantee some digital download prizes. Thanks again, and see you there. ------------------------------------------- 4. Mayor Bloomberg Proclaims "Magic Week" -------------------------------------------- Message by George Schindler (US) Mayor Bloomberg Proclaims "Magic Week" In New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg proclaimed the week of October 25 to October 31 as "MAGIC WEEK" in New York City. For more than forty years the Society of American Magicians, founded in New York in 1902, has recognized the anniversary of the death of Harry Houdini with a special "week" of events to highlight the charitable work of the Society throughout the year. Free magic shows and demonstrations will be supplied by the Society's members in VA Hospitals, (St. Albans and New York Harbor VA hospital in Brooklyn ) Senior Citizen facilities and for children at Mt Sinai Hospital (Kid Zone) and at Ronald McDonald House in NY. A full afternoon show is planned for the Taiwan Senior Center Association in Queens. For more information and the history of this week see http://www.magicsam.com/magicweek.asp Society of American Magicians contact dean@magicsam.com 7128 336 0605 -------------------------------------------- 6. Remarkable Magic #5 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) The next, 'next' Magic Castle! I have been doing a little digital magic forum surfing recently and I was interested to read the various opinions on the Magic Castle group page on Facebook about the 'Hollywood Magic Bar' which is opening, both figuratively and literally in the shadow of the Magic Castle. I think the main reason for complaint was that it implied a 'Move over Magic Castle we are the brightest, newest kid on the block--ready to give you a run for your money!' Well, that is the kind of thing/notion that publicists are paid to say, in fact it is their job to say it. It isn't easy going into competition with a Legend---you need all the bluster you can summon up. The bar might do quite well, my recent visits to the Castle has convinced me that a younger demographic (early or first daters?) have flourished at the Castle. More power to that! The Castle doesn't really do much too overtly cater to this crowd and that might be quietly beneficial to its success in this area. The thought of aerialist and DJs make the HMB sound a little suspect to me, however a really good martini--maybe served on an Ice Bar. Ah, that's a different story! I have been playing around with a Magic Martini theme for a couple of years (Shameless plug-- I still have some limited edition prints left in my online store) and I rather like it. Maybe the Castle could think about a really cool Martini Bar on their premises? It might add a pleasant touch of elegance to a pretty expensive nightspot--with pretty expensive drinks. Probably the HMB will be closed in a few months and they can buy the hardware at bargain prices. I may be rambling (or, of course, totally wrong) but I believe that Milt once acted as a semi advisor to a fledgling club and approved the name 'It's Magic' because he knew it would be great merchandise for a future 'It's Magic' show. I certainly hope that the story is true; it is such a good one, rather like the "Johnny Thompson forgot to load the doves" which is of course a deliciously true story. I long for the day when every major city has a 'At least once a month, or week) magic show. There really is a market out there and it is something I am looking into very seriously in the upcoming year. 'Monday Night Magic' in New York, 'The Mystery Lounge' in Boston, Jeff McBride's 'Wonderground' in Las Vegas are just the first to hit the tip of my brain--and that's just 'cos I've played them all and had a blast doing so! I refuse to get overexcited about a new kid on the block trying to steal a little thunder from the Castle. With all its years running as an institution (sometimes figuratively, sometimes literally!) in LA, my bet is that the Castle won't be affected one iota. It might not do any harm for some 'observant onlookers of a quasi-secret nature' to keep a close eye on how the 'Hollywood Magic Bar' is doing. They might get some fresh and innovative ideas--who knows? If they serve a decent 'Ginger Cosmo' I might volunteer for the mission myself. email me what you think at nicklewin1@me.com -------------------------------------------- 7. Why Perform Scout Shows - #230 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com So why even venture into this market in the first place? Why go into performing for Blue and Gold Banquets and what is really in it for you? This is what I would like to discuss as I am sure many have thought about this market but are not really sure they want to take the leap without having some background knowledge. If you are already performing for children, work a family-focused show or if you are even a strolling magician, then Blue and Gold banquets are a perfect extension of what you are already doing. Most cub packs are very much like a big extended family for everyone involved. You showing up to perform is almost like showing up at a large family reunion of sorts. This is similar to doing a large birthday party where everyone knows each other. There are some obvious differences but the basic feel is of a family atmosphere. If this is the case, then Blue and Gold banquets are a perfect market to get into where you can work them well with simply modifying your current show a bit and having an understanding of how to market to them. With banquets usually running the month of February and into March and even May, this can be a slow down time for birthday parties and your other markets. Blue and Gold banquets are a great way to gain more show bookings during this time. Another great advantage of doing these types of performances is that it is a wonderful way to market yourself directly to the right age for birthday parties and your other shows you offer. Most banquets are well attended with young families coming out to support their sons. This is a perfect demographic to be able to market yourself while at the banquet and get people seeing you for possible shows they may be wanting or needing in the future. Another reason I enjoy this market is the that I was a Scout and went through the Scouting program myself. Even if you have not, this is an excellent way of giving back to a great organization that does wonderful things for young boys. The best part about this market is that you do not have to fear jumping into it. Many folks think of blue and gold banquet shows as being dropped into the middle of a pack of wild dogs. This does not and is often not the case. If you know how to create a great, fun and interactive show, there is no reason at ALL why you cannot provide a great and fun experience for the group. If you can perform for children at a home, then you certainly have the skills to be able to do Blue and Gold banquets. You also must understand that Cub Scouting is based upon learning control and self-discipline. The Cubmaster and Den Leaders will work with you to ensure proper conduct. The kids are also used to techniques used by the leaders to settle down and pay attention. These techniques you can utilize with success as the scouts are familiar with it. So I hope you can see that if you enjoy performing for children and families, that this is a great market that is wide open for you to explore. There are packs all over the world and every year they are wanting and needing entertainment solutions. YOU can be that solution and earn extra income during a slow time of the year. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. - "Blue and Gold! Tony Brook In Conversation With Jon Racherbaumer - Part 6 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA ADB: Can you share with us the names of a few Magicians who you consider exceptionally noteworthy JR: This is a difficult question to answer. There were four magicians who personally enchanted me, vis-a-vis, and seemed to do truly miraculous things-Ed Marlo, Chan Canasta, Tony Slydini, Finn Jon, and Lennert Green. I also was transfixed by Tommy Wonder and Juan Tameriz. Marco Tempest seems to be on the right track. ADB: What type of magic do you most enjoy performing? JR: Anything with playing cards and acts of pure consciousness, i.e. mental magic. ADB: Do you ever perform tricks by other magicians? JR: Everything I perform, if and when I perform, I've learned and taken from other magicians. I truly believe we are "parasites of our precursors" and I'm indebted to many, many creative and enterprising magicians over the years. If it were not for them, my repertoire would consist of the prayer vase and the ring off string. ADB: Do you have a favorite effect or let me phrase it another way, an effect that you favour doing more than others ? JR: "Open Travellers," a four-ace trick using the invisible palm. My favourite trick to watch is Corinda's "Powers of Darkness." ADB: I suppose this is somewhat of a rhetorical question to ask an author but what are your views on books versus videos as learning tools? JR: Both mediums are important; however, video is a co-expressive tool that permits students to witness timing and how certain performers idiosyncratically handle their methods and presentations. Learning from books is a much different, personal, and lasting experience. Videos tend to create copycats because the viewer is actually "learning by imitation." what you see is what you end up doing. Material learned from books is assimilated, then transmuted by our own personality. The material becomes us; it is internalized. It is also integrated into what you already know. ADB: Over the years, in common with many of us , you have accumulated many prized possessions but if I put you on the spot to name one right now .. what would it be? Apart from Jessica of course!! What is your most prized possession (regarding magic)? JR: Ed Marlo's personal copy of The Cardician. ADB: Now that's what I call a prized possession!! You obviously enjoyed many highlights in your life care to comment on that .? JR: It's difficult to choose the highlight because there have been many highlights. Having the opportunity and privilege to meet and share life-experiences with so many great magicians and special people over the years are not only highlights, they are guide-lights. It never ceases to astonish me that the written word reaches so many people and affects them. Being able to write about magicians and magic is an ongoing "highlight". End of Part 6 -------------------------------------------- 9. The John And Tammy Calvert Report -------------------------------------------- Message by Eddy Lester John and Tammy Calvert are difficult to keep up with. In July John headlined The South Carolina Assoc. of Magicians convention. August found them at Abbotts Get Together, where John said," the hardest part was not the show, the hardest part was signing autograph all day and all night". The night before his birthday at near midnight we went for a snack at the American Legion Hall. Everyone sang happy birthday at midnight John was born August 5th, 1911. He was up bright and early the next day to take care of business and to do an interview. September they flew over to London for the Paul Stone, 100 magicians at the 100 year old Paladium Theater show. The curtain opened to find John and Tammy, with 20 beautiful dancers, the crowd went wild. The first week in October they were featured at the Magic Castle. They stayed another week in California to see John's sister and brother, who are both in their 90's. They both came to the Castle when they did the show and tribute to the Larsens, Thursday in the Palace theater to a packed house. John received so many standing ovations, Tammy couldn't keep up with it. Monday they gave them a very elegant dinner with all the Board of Trustees. Irene, Milt and Arlene Larsen, the President Neil Patrick Harris, Ed Alonzo, Mark and Nani Wilson, Greg and Ayako Wilson, and a few others. Arlene had little bottles of champagne wrapped very nice with John's picture on it and a big one as well for John. Tuesday they had dinner with the many magicians. Wednesday was the interview with Max Maven and Thursday was the tribute to the Larsens and show. I was told John did a perfect show. He did Cigarettes, the Lazy Magician and The Dancing Handkerchief. Greg asked John if he could do his Billiard Balls on the show. He was great!. Friday they took it easy. Every Friday they serve lunch and Milt writes a report on the back of the menu on what's going on at the Castle. He mentioned John's sister and brother as well. Greg Wilson informed me that his mother Nani Wilson was one of John's dancing assistants many years ago. Saturday Greg took then to their warehouse. The Calverts had a grand tour of the Wilson's warehouse. It's huge! All the illusions were in cases or boxes stacked to the ceiling. Sunday was another full house and standing ovations. There was a video clip on the screen that Greg put together, then he asked John questions about some of his adventures. John also talked on How To Live To Be A Hundred, (Which by the way is the title of John's new book) and ended with a question and answers session. John with Tammy will headline the Daytona Beach Florida Magicians' convention, the first weekend in November. John will be doing a lecture and closing the Saturday night headliner show. John asked me what do I have for him next, a trip to New Zealand or another National tour here in the States? He told me he is going to the gym 3 times a week! Best always, Eddy Lester ------------------------------------------- 10. November Issue Of Genii Magazine -------------------------------------------- Message by Richard Kaufman (US) For all subscribers--it's FREE--and our November issue is now online for your reading and viewing pleasure. (The iPad edition will be ready tomorrow. If you try and download it now and play a video, it will crash.) Genii begins its 75th Anniversary year with our November issue, featuring Spanish card maestro Dani DaOrtiz on our cover. In addition to a fine article on Dani written by David Britland, Dani also explains three of his unique card routines. This issue also contains a free DVD from the Essential Magic Collection and Murphy's magic which features both Dani and Lennart Green each performing and teaching a routine, plus teasers for the EMC's other products. Paul Osborne grew up in Texas and knows a few interesting stories about Mark Wilson's early years, with which he "Allakzams" us. This month marks the 10th year of Roberto Giobbi's column, "Genii Session," which is one of the finest and most informative ongoing sources of magical thinking in our field. And he's written a special double-length edition for you this month, a guide to reading magical literature using one of the effects from The Expert at the Card Table as an example. Tom Stone catapults another intellectual explosion into our pages-fascinating reading in this month's "Lodestones," in which he shreds some of the so-called "scientific" findings written about in the book "Sleights of Mind." Fancy science? Nah--just fancy words. I want a practical handling of Peter Kane's "Shrinking Card Case," where the miniature card box can be given to a spectator so he can remove the cards-Jim Steinmeyer explains it in this month's "Conjuring." We get a little more Joseffy in "Chamber of Secrets" when John Gaughan raps the mechanical hand. Al Cohen reminisces; Jon Racherbaumer intellectualizes; and I do my usual speaking as The Genii. This month we have audio columns from Max Maven (a hilarious anecdote about Dai Vernon) and Jon Racherbaumer (explaining a fine routine by Henry Christ); three videos of cover boy Dani DaOrtiz kicking up a card-magic rumpus; and a pilot video produced by Nintendo featuring Tomo Maeda performing his "Oil and Water" routine. Hope you enjoy all of it and would like to hear when you receive your paper issue by snail mail, or when you have viewed the digital issue online or on your iPad or iPhone. About the Audio and Video Supplements in Genii's digital edition: Thousands of people have downloaded Genii's free iPad and iPhone apps, and the issues on the iPad and iPhone are free to all subscribers as well. When you subscribe to the paper, you get the digital free. One of the things I enjoy about our iGenii digital edition of the magazine is the opportunity to include audio and video supplements. As I meet Genii readers at magic conventions, I ask if they've looked at the digital edition and they sometimes say, "I'm a paper guy." Well, even if you prefer to read the paper edition of Genii, the digital iGenii edition offers at least an hour of video in every issue. Genii gives you more than any other magazine in magic for your money. And you don't need an iPad or iPhone--you can view the digital edition on any computer--desktop or laptop. Subscriber to Genii for only $56 for one year and you receive: * 12 paper issues delivered to your home. * The current issue online, free to all subscribers, with audio and video extras. (Subscribers can read these issues weeks before the paper issue arrives.) * Access to every single back issue Genii has published from 1936 through December 2008. That's almost 1000 issues! Tens of thousands of columns, tricks, illusions, and articles. And it's all absolutely free to every Genii subscriber. Of course you will have to be on the internet for access, which will be through the Conjuring Arts Research Center. The issues are simple pdf documents which can be read on most electronic devices including newer Kindles, Sony eReaders, Nook, iPhone, iPad and of course any desktop or laptop computer. (So far, unfortunately, tablets running Android cannot read pdf files embedded in a website--we're hoping a patch will be created soon.) Every subscriber will have access to an electronic version of every issue for the duration of his or her subscription. Digital-only subscriptions are available for $56 to residents outside the United States: http://geniistore.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=35&product_id=57 If you are a subscriber and haven't sent us your e-mail address yet, please do so to: genii@geniimagazine.com).
