Editor's Message -------------------------------------------- Regarding Justin Lane and his magic clone Magic Matt for making false and misleading claims on awards for publicity purposes. The New Zealand Commerce Commission has concluded its investigation into this matter and has issued Cornflakes Magic World (Justin Lane) with a Compliance Advice Letter. A Compliance Advice Letter informs the trader that the New Zealand Commerce Commission has received complaints, outlines the details of the complaint and informs the trader that the Commission is of the opinion that they are at risk of breaching the Fair Trading Act 1986. Justin has now complied with the Commerce Commissions requests and removed from all his websites, social media and promotional material items that were of concern and he also has apologised. If you have similar problems with dishonest and misleading advertising by performers in your area or country then it is worthwhile looking at what legal channels you can pursue to have these false or misleading advertising claims removed. -------------------------------- Attended Theo de Leeuw's Funeral in Hamilton, New Zealand, along with many other magicians and our very own Michael Woolf officiated the service which was a great celebration of his life. --------------------------------- Welcome back Bernard Reid who has been performing on cruise ships for many years and recently returned home to Auckland, New Zealand to live after many years living overseas. E-Cigarette Story!! -------------------------------------------- Message by Bob Pozner (US) In the August 14th issue, item #11, E-Cigarette story by Walter Zaney Blaney does not include the important fact the E-Cigarette vapor contains nicotine! It is a nicotine delivery system available in different strengths, is habit forming and is intended for smokers who wish to quit. That is the reason it cannot be sold to minors. Is the ability to perform cigarette magic worth the risk of addiction and should readers be warned? -------------------------------------------- 5. Three Generations Of Blaneys On Stage At IBM -------------------------------------------- Message by Walter Blaney (US) Hi from Texas, The International Brotherhood of Magicians convention in Dallas in early July was a great one. The last night they presented "The Legends of Magic Show" with some legendary acts in our craft. It was on stage at the beautiful old Majestic Theater. This is where it all began for me, as I saw Blackstone Sr. and his Show of 1001 Wonders three times a day for a full week, at the tender age of nine. I was totally enthralled at every show, and it led me into a 62 year career in magic and show business. So it was especially meaningful to me to get to introduce on stage my magician daughter Becky Blaney, and to "pass the mantel" of my Zaney Blaney Ladder Levitation to her as she presented it for the big audience that night. Becky levitated my ten year old granddaughter Mallory Keeler, the daughter of my youngest daughter Shannon Keeler. So it was truly a "family affair", with three generations of Blaneys on stage together. I thought a few of my friends who were not there to see it live might enjoy a glimpse of this bit of magic history. I hope you will find it interesting watching this six minute video clip of the act on this special occasion. All my best wishes from Texas, and from my hometown Dallas, on my very favorite stage in the entire world, where my magic days began long, long ago. My thanks to the great Harry Blackstone, who inspired so many young magicians of his day. Walter http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMC4HdGmwCs -------------------------------------------- 6. More Remarkable Magic # 46 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Lots of Magicians to mingle with! I seem to have met up with more magicians in the last week than I have in the year before. A visit to the Magic Castle last Thursday gave me the privilege of catching 'Pop' Hadyn performing in the Palace of Mysteries. What a great job he did. I have known 'Pop' for quite a few years now but this was the first time I had seen him performing in his "Pop" persona. It is very, very clever and a real crowd pleaser. His 19th Century character who seems strangely stranded in another time zone is unique and beautifully thought out. Hadyn's 20-minute set explored the limits and extremes of his teleportation device. In lesser hands it might have seemed like a duo of burnt and restored dollar bill tricks but with 'Pop' his unique props and premise turned it into something much different. The slightly deranged twinkle in his eyes turned Hadyn's performance into a series of jokes within jokes. 'Pop' is truly a consummate magician, carefully wedded to a well thought out and fully fleshed out comedy character. In that respect, he reminded me of John Carney, another truly standout contemporary performer. I can't wait to see Hadyn perform his full Medicine Show and suspect it will be something very, very special. I will look forward to writing a full review of his show at that point. The Palace of Mysteries has never looked better and Stage Manager Bryan Lee had it humming and functioning as the first rate jewel box theatre that it has become. Mystina and Dan Birch completed the line-up in the Palace and the entire show delighted the audience from first to last. Last Friday I spent many hours with Steve Mitchell, who is the Castle's resident graphic genius and also the designer/editor of the recent (and WONDERFUL) book, 'Tales From The Uncanny Scot,' by the late Ron Wilson. If you love Magic, the Magic Castle and Magicians then you need to own this book. There are a few copies available from the recent publication including, I believe, some limited edition and numbered copies signed by the Uncanny One himself. Check out the official site www.uncannyscot.com I am happy to say that Steve has undertaken to take my various columns from Magic New Zealand, Linking Ring and other magic magazines and re-work them into book form. We are re-writing, expanding, re-thinking and revising all my various articles into a coherent book form. Sounds like a bunch of work! On Tuesday I dropped in to 'Magic Live' here in Las Vegas and got to meet up with some of my dearest friends in magic. What a joy! Although I didn't spend much time exploring the convention itself I was very impressed by the way Stan Allen put everything together. Stan makes the whole darn thing look so easy and effortless-a true feat of magic! His blindfold magic experiment was the talk of the convention and something I wish I could have experienced. Mark Nelson will be writing a full report for Magic Magazine so I won't tread on his turf. Tonight is Jeff McBride's 'Wonderground' event at the Olive restaurant in Vegas. I always enjoy these events and the combination of a (almost) full moon and all the extra magicians in town from the convention should make this an especially great evening! I understand there are still some tickets available for Paul Stone's 100 years of Magic Extravaganza at the London Palladium. A chance to celebrate John Calvert's 100th birthday party and see a great magic show--- all while helping a great charity! Check it out at producer@palladiummagic.com Drop me an email at nicklewin1@me.com -------------------------------------------- 7. Adrenalin Drain - #222 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com The key chemical in the body that tends to kick start the stress response is adrenalin. Its role is to flood the body with as much energy and drive as possible to achieve maximum alertness and function. It is this RUSH of energy that brings us the term adrenalin rush. It is also why a lot of folks seek this rush for that sudden burst of endorphins that make you feel fantastic. If you have ever performed for any group of people, you have experienced this adrenalin rush first hand. You have experienced what it feels like the moment your music kicks in, the lights come up and you step out on that stage. It is not so much a fear response as it is this rush of adrenalin based on the typical stress associated with the art we perform. But many can attest to the amazing power of adrenalin. That natural rush does amazing things. I have been physically sick with the flu and felt nothing on stage simply because of how adrenalin effected my body. I have been able to lift things I normally would not be able to simply because the rush have given me increased stamina and strength to overcome something. However, adrenalin tends to work on time tables. The more immediate the concern or need, the more the body releases this energy to give you what you need to handle the situation. This is one reason why you feel so much different if you have ever had a deer jump out in front of your car. Other than the fact you have to change your shorts, you can attest to the power adrenalin has given to you in that very moment. The problem lies in when adrenalin is made to last for a longer period of time. In most shows, the adrenalin of natural performance remains in the body for the entire shows duration. Regardless if the show is 45 mins or a full hour and a half, that adrenalin keeps you going and feeling alive. The problem is what many do not understand that takes place. Many understand the rush feeling of adrenalin. However, a lot do not understand why they feel so tired, sore and beat afterwards. Many misunderstand it as just being that way because the show was so demanding. That is true but only in part. One of the biggest reasons people feel this way is simply due to what I refer to as adrenalin drain. Adrenalin will only exist in the body for as long as the body feels it is needed. Once that need is gone, the body releases the energy all at once. The longer the adrenalin was there, the more wear and tear it places on the body and the faster that energy is going to be consumed. Once you do not need it, the energy is gone. This is one of the major reasons why people feel so tired and beat after a performance. It is natural to have happen but it is also smart to realize why it does happen. The drain is really nothing to fear per say. However one can learn how to limit the effects of this drain on the body. Remember that adrenalin usually happens as a result of being in a stressed situation. Performing any type of show is indeed stressful. So in order to limit the amount of adrenalin that is needed, we learn to limit the stress we cause on ourselves. This simply means we can learn to get to a gig early to give proper time. It means making sure things are set up and in place and double checking things long in advance. It can mean talking with the client a few days prior to ensure everything runs smoothly and there is no guess work. It also means allowing and giving you enough time to simply rest and take it easy before a show starts. Even meditating or listening to music can reduce the natural stress of a show. If you use these tips. Then you reduce stress. If you reduce the stress your body does not need so much adrenalin for a long period. This in essence allows you to not feel as much of the side effects of the drain that can happen afterwards. So understand that adrenalin happens and why it happens. Then do what you can to alleviate the stress associated with a show. The more knowledge you have the better you can come to terms with what many of us face every time out. Tony Brook In Conversation With Ozlen Tuncer - Part 4 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA ADB: You are a very easy-going and friendly person with a great personality and you also speak English and French. Turkish coffee, Turkish delight and Raki . tell us a bit about Turkey, the custom , the people and mostly about Turkish Magicians. You all seem very warm and welcoming ... OT: Many cultures over the centuries give modern day Turkey a unique place on the world map. We are an open, democratic country and for centuries have been the gateway to many areas of trade and culture. We had our glory days during the Ottoman Empire. the British Empire was also in full bloom at the time but today much has changed for the better. And when I say Turkey, many will think about Turkish Delight (many kinds), Turkish Coffee, Raki and belly dancers. All are original to Turkey. Turkish tradition takes any visitor as a guest of honor. We are hospitable by blood, we have embraced it from our ancestors. We try to be contemporary without leaving our traditions. We are a country that embraces modern thinking but still values our past and traditions and so it is with Turkish Magicians. As I mentioned before, I had a leading role to play in the development of Turkish Magic both inside and outside Turkey. I say this not to be proud in a boastful way but proud in a way that allowed me to contribute to the Art of Magic in Turkey. But let me point out it is team work naturally. We were three musketeers of magic to give a modern way to this art: Myself, Dr. Selim BASARIR ( M.Dr ) and late Erdinc DEMIRAY ( The founders of the Izmir Magic get together ) ADB: Yes. I understand what you mean. Someone has to start things; be an innovator. Everything has to start somewhere and someone has to play a key role in organizing things. Share with us some of the stories and experiences in founding the IBM Rings . OT: Hahaha . It is another funny story. To be honest till the year 2000 not many people believed in any society/organization of magic. Even the Turkish Society of Magicians had less than 50 members. When I competed in the Balkanian Magic Convention in the year 2000 in Bulgaria, I have seen that the group can be much more powerful than the individuals. After that, I became a member of The IBM. and still proud of it. I tried to tell people about how we can achieve things easier when we are under a common umbrella. One day, after several years in my efforts to promote the IBM I was asked if I wanted to be the first TVP for Turkey. It was an honour ! And I still, proudly carry this title. After that we had all tried to start a ring in Turkey. With a twist of fate , we opened two rings simultaneously! Twin Rings! And we founded the third ring in Izmir nearly two years ago and still achieving really good publicity for magic. Oh... if you let me talk, I talk a lot :-) Let me point out that I became TVP when there was no ring yet but helped to found the current rings. Ok, ok... I know I talk a lot :-) ABD: You referred earlier on to your Mentor Dr. Morgan. Tell us a bit about him and some of the Magicians that influenced you . for example the times you spent with Ted Lesley and others of similar quality . OT: Tony how do you find these questions? Before this I did not even think over these, this is being a self accounting for me. To be honest I was in love with magic but never had a childhood hero in this art. But I used to watch every magician I could. Nevertheless the legendary Turkish magician ZATI SUNGUR had shown me that a magician could receive good respect if he is outstanding. He did many things to advance Turkish Magic as an Art and is now immortal. He is on the same level to the art of Turkish magic as Robert-Houdin is to world magic. By the way Tony, you are my only living Mentor. I hope I may have you many more years. ADB: Thank you. That is very flattering . and I hope to be a living Mentor for quite a while!!! But let us talk about the great Dr. Morgan .. OT: I was a very young boy and interested in Magic when I met Dr. Morgan. Dr Morgan was a very famous Indian fakir and had learned the art in India. He used to have a ballet group and would involve magic with a very spectacular show. After the magic show he used to do the fakir shows which had no trick but playing with your own life. He was a very accomplished magician; manipulations, big illusions and Mentalism. I begged for his help in learning the art. He refused to help me telling that I should finish my school first. I was quite persistent and insistent. He cultivated me days and days in his home often till the early hours of the morning.Very, very long and tiring nights. During that time I was doing amateur shows with the name. Ozlen-The magician. After this hard training, Dr. Morgan suggested me to find a name which can be easily remembered. I had chosen TORA because it was the name of a book I was reading and the meaning was "Magnetic Power". And it was easy to read and pronounce in any language. End of Part Four -------------------------------------------- 9. Apology From Dave Boyd -------------------------------------------- Message by Dave Boyd Magic (Aust) Regarding my magic book sale. Review Of Jamy's New Book 'Devious Standards' -------------------------------------------- Message by Mike Easterbrook (New Zealand) I've never met Jamy but I have met and spent time with a couple of people that he pays tribute to, namely Billy McComb and Bob Read. Jamy has much reverence and empathy for these performers and I would have purchased the book just to read about them. However there is much more. There is a chapter on empathy. I could have bought the book just to read this chapter. I can't think of any magician who would not gain something of value from any chapter this book, especially from 'A Dissertation on the Double Lift'. Jamy quotes from Dai Vernon in Stars of Magic: '"There is probably no sleight in all card magic more abused than the double lift. __ Dai Vernon's Ambitious Card" Stars of Magic There is more on offer here such as JS Rules of Magic, This chapter should make you pause and reflect about what you are doing. To hopefully think about what you are saying during a performance. In 1952 Bill Simon wrote: 'Today, audiences are well informed.....' He may have written that last year. You'll have to get the book to read the rest. Do yourselves a favour, get a copy, be informed and challenged by one of our deep thinkers in magic. -------------------------------------------- 15.
