John Calvert Turns 100 Years Old -------------------------------------------- Article forwarded on by Mel Kientz (US) The Amplifier John Calvert: Magician of the Century by Kim Mason On August 5, John Calvert turned 100 years old. In the last few years, he has semi-retired, cutting appearances down to small performances, lectures and guest appearances for magic clubs and conventions around the world. But his 80 years on tour make his act twice as long as the second longest running act in magic and the longest running stage act of any kind. During his career he performed in every major theater in the world, made some 40 movies during Hollywood's golden age and lived through exploits on land and sea that are the stuff of legends. His vast career and adventures lead the nation's largest manufacturer of magic tricks and kits to recently bestow upon him the title Magician of the Century. For a long time after John Calvert started performing magic tricks, he believed he was faking what real musicians could really do. Today, the Bowling Green resident understands magic is the art of illusion and 80 years of performance have taught him that for success, even more important than the trick is the connection to the audience. Born Madren Elbern Calvert in New Trenton Indiana on August 5, 1911, Calvert attended his first magic performance at the age of 8 when his father took him to Cincinnati to see Howard Thurston. Without ever having read a magic book, he began to create tricks, the first, making an egg appear from under a boy's coat for his Sunday school class. By 18 he was on tour around Kentucky towns with his assistant Gyp the Wonder Dog and had made his first profit, $2.65. Throughout the depression into the 1940's his show grew as did his notoriety through daredevil publicity stunts. Calvert told Chris Britt, President of The John Calvert Society Of Young Magicians in 1998, "I had the heaviest show; I carried more props than anybody else in America. I had the biggest, but not the best show. It wasn't until I went out to California and I cut my show down into a smaller show, got rid of a lot of worthless props. I was a demonstrator of illusions, in other words if you didn't like this one, maybe you'll like the next one. But when, I cut the show down to where I had to go out and sell John Calvert and present the illusions and entertain the audience, that's when I became a success." But even his slimmed down version was a large show. As it grew and the tour expanded he changed his mode of transportation: first traveling by car, then adding a trailer, then a truck, then a semi-trailer truck. Soon he had moved to an airplane, then a DC-3 and eventually a fleet of a dozen planes. Eventually he would purchase a yacht from Henry Ford that was built for Ford's son Edsel. Calvert sailed the 100 foot vessel to Hawaii, Japan, Singapore, the Philippines and Australia. In the years since yachts remained his favored mode of transport and by 1998 he had a "pure triple crew world cruising yacht with a cruising range of three thousand miles" and claimed to have performed magic in every country with a theater in the world except Russia. His stage show opened with a fast routine of many tricks he calls "variety magic" for about three minutes. This was followed by shooting a woman out of a cannon into a space capsule and cutting a man's head off with a buzz saw. Calvert says he was the originator of sawing off heads with a buzz saw. In the Hollywood years, it was Danny Kaye's head he sawed. The comedian would come out dressed as Hitler and crew dressed as marines would grab him and put him in the buzz saw, then put his head in a sausage grinder producing German Wieners. Another signature trick he says he originated is having his wife since 1982, Tammy, play an organ as they float above the stage and then the audience. Tammy joined Calvert some fifty years ago in Singapore and immediately joined the act, shortly afterward, the two married. But Tammy was not his first wife. His previous marriage began when he played the Capitol Arts Theater. The ticket salesperson, flattered by his attentions said "Aren't you going to kiss me?" To which he replied "Maybe you'll get a chance someday!" He goes on to explain that he's "only been sorry once ever since", as in Kentucky once you kiss a girl, you marry her. His daughter continued to live in Bowling Green, and thus he chose it when he was finally ready to settle down a bit. In the forties Calvert got his big break in Hollywood as Clark Gable's hand double, performing sleight of hand movements Gable was unable to learn for Honky Tonk. The film lead to a contract with Columbia where he acted in and directed many films, most notably playing the Falcon in three pictures. But he cites his most memorable times during the period as when he directed Paul Newman in his first film, starring opposite John Carradine in his last film and all the good times co-hosting parties with his next door neighbor, Errol Flynn. Calvert's biographer, William V. Rauscher refers to him as "a real life Indiana Jones" because of the dangers he has survived in his travels. He's survived hurricanes and attacks at sea and also performed in Nashville the same evening he crash landed his plane. It is rumored that Calvert once proclaimed there wasn't a port in the world where he didn't know someone at the dock when he pulled in. Bowling Green is lucky that this amazing talent chose it as the place to drop anchor. The John Calvert Magic Club: The John Calvert Magic Club was formed in 2010 by Calvert's friend Ricky Childress and a group of fellow performers from the area who hope to someday become a charter club of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. Childress, who performs magic and clowns as Noodles says that the club is open to related artists as well such as ventriloquists and balloon animal sculptors. They currently meet the 4th Monday each month at the First Christian Church 1106 State St. at 6:30 p.m. The current focus is on fellowship, but Childress hopes to begin having teaching and showing sessions as well as speakers once the club has been established. -------------------------------------------- 3. Taking Things for Granted - #220 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com It's true that we don't know what we've got until we lose it, but it's also true that we don't know what we've been missing until it arrives. We too often take for granted the simple things in life that happen to us every single day. Something so simple as the birds flying or wind against your face are overseen simply as if they no longer exist. Isn't it a shame that we often shut down from the beauty of the world simply because "it has always been there?" Isn't it strange how one person can find joy in something another finds as "not a big deal". As many of you know, I am a deaf entertainer. I started losing my hearing when I was just 8 years old and it got worse as I got older. What I once was able to hear, sounds started to suddenly vanish for me. The sound of a cricket I no longer knew simply because I couldn't hear it and the memory faded from my mind. The sound of wind against your ears as it brushes by on a spring day..gone. I would never experience again. I do not tell you this to feel sorry for me, as I do not feel sorry for myself. Although I may not hear the world like you do, I certainly SEE the world in ways not many do. As one sense was lost, another compensated. I was able to see things in different ways. Things most take for granted, always fascinated me as I would see them in different ways. Perhaps it was simply because I chose to pay just a little more attention to them. For over 41 years the sounds of things have faded from my mind. For all those years sounds were simply memories of what I THOUGHT something sounded like as a child. For all those years some sounds I never was allowed to hear at all. But as I stated, we often do not know what we are missing until it arrives. Well yesterday it arrived for me. I received my first set of digital hearing aids. As scared as I was and as nervous as I was, it has been an adventure worth writing about. As I sat in the doctor's chair, and as he turned them on for the very first time..WOW..just WOW! It was as if I had been watching the world from a fuzzy black and white TV and suddenly someone switched a switch and I was watching full color HD. Just that fast I was introduced to a world that had been lost to me for my entire 41 years of my life. I have received gifts before, but NOTHING compares to the gift of being able to simply hear sounds again. I will never hear "normal", but to even be able to hear what I now can is the most wondrous and joyful experience of my life. How much do we all take for granted? A LOT more then you may realize. In less than 24 hours I have experienced things I have never heard before in my life. I never knew footsteps made noise. I heard crickets for the very first time and they were BEAUTIFUL. I felt the wind against my face and rush by my ears and I stood there for 15 minutes with a tear in my eye. It just felt so amazing. How much do we take these things for granted? How many of us never take the time to realize how awesome the simple things are in the world around us? So why do I share this with you? What does this have to do with magic? Nothing and everything is the answer. As entertainers we all take too much for granted. We all complain about situations we are in, the heat we have to deal with and crazy kids who do not want to listen. However, we forget and take for granted the joy magic can bring to the heart of a child. We forget that what we do is an art and should ALWAYS be treated like one. We take for granted that what we have is a gift. We have the ability to create magic that is way more than just a showing of a trick. We can create experiences for people that others cannot. As I am sitting hearing new sounds for the first time in my life, I am smiling ear to ear. Sound is a gift I will never take for granted. However, the art of magic is also something I will cherish as well. I will stop for a second to remember what a blessing it is to call myself a magician. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. Tony Brook In Conversation With Ozlen Tuncer - Part 2 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA ADB: I agree wholeheartedly. Why not indeed? There is much within the Art that is of great value and I would go further and say of greater value than some of the fore-mentioned ... there are Circus Schools in China, Russia and elsewhere devoted to The Art of Circus - why not Magic? The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London is a great example of an Institution for the study of Theatre and Acting... so, why not an establishment of the Art of Magic School? OT: Yes indeed. Why not? I think that often we Magicians are the ones to blame ... all too often, as I'm sure you, and all those serious about the Art will agree, Magic is perceived differently by lay people than it is perceived by true Magicians. I have a dream. I dream about founding a Department of Magic in a University. I will do my best in order to achieve this. I have already prepared an Academic Curriculum for a magic department. Soon, in the near future I will hopefully actual use it! Today for anyone to buy tricks and perform them often badly is easy. The high-tech world of YouTube and Internet shopping has changed many things forever . not always for the better. Nevertheless we cannot say that everybody who does magic does art! It may be paradoxical but I have to say Magic is an art but depending on how you do it. Art can be described as: Giving messages to society in a creative way. So if magic lacks in one of these messages, one cannot call oneself an artist. This is the point which is forgotten or probably not known to many magicians. Often, there is magic without creativity or magic without a message. So when you cannot produce something you cannot talk about art. But unfortunately those who have no idea what art is talk about "art" more than those who are in the know, what a pity! ADB: Yes sadly the Art has been devalued . and as seen by lay people albeit from a different perspective .but let us talk a bit about you and the social media. OT: I agree with you about the Art being unnecessarily cheapened and I'm sure we can talk about that for hours...in fact, over the years we have had quite a few conversations about that topic .but in regards to the social media... yes, I am a communicator and I use them to the fullest extent. I am quite a fan of Skype, Chat boxes, Facebook, etc. It allows me to interact with people all over the world, especially Magicians. I have built up a large network of friends, quite literally, all over the world. I am quite astonished by the wonderful interaction that can be achieved. ADB: You are credited with many "firsts" in Turkey .tell us a bit about that . OT: Thank you for asking me about those . I am, in all modesty quite proud of those achievements. I have, as you say done many "firsts" in magic in my country and I will list some of them below. Most important of all I am the first Magician / Mentalist who was accepted to compete in the FISM ever from Turkey. It was a great honor. You asked me to tell you about them .well, here goes . I was the first Turk to be featured in the well-known Scandinavian magazine, "JOKERI". First Turk to compete at FISM. Back in 2003, I was the first person to start a Magic club at a University. Team Captain not once, but twice for Turkey at FISM. Starred in my own TV Show on Turkish Television. First person to represent Turkey at various Magic conventions, Started IBM Rings in Turkey. Was the first TVP in Turkey. Published the first Magic related magazine in Turkey. In 2004, I received the GOLDEN ARTEMIS Award from the Municipality of Selcuk and the Directorate of Ephesus Museum. I am the only Turk who has won international awards in mentalism such as from Balkanian Magic Convention. There is much more. Much, much more but I think this is enough for you to get the idea. I do not want to turn this in to a board of self-esteem. End of Part Two -------------------------------------------- 9. International Singing Sensation Jay Scott Berry -------------------------------------------- Message by Jay Scott Berry Los Angeles, CA --- Once again international singing sensation Jay Scott Berry has captured the # 1 spot on the Independent Music Network's Mainstream Chart. Seemingly unstoppable in its upward momentum, his debut single, "Please Come to Boston," has just cracked the highly competitive Top 10 on FMQB's ACQB chart alongside the top names in the business. On New Music Weekly's Hot 100 Chart, (a compilation of all genres and formats), Berry moved up to # 7 above perennial hit makers Steven Tyler, Beyonce and Coldplay. The August 5 issue of NMW also lists "Please Come to Boston" at # 2 on the Hot AC Indie Chart and # 3 on the Hot AC Main chart. Gary Hendrix who heads the IMN, the leading network for Indie artists and bands, states: "Jay Scott Berry and 'Please Come to Boston' have been in our Top 10 for an unprecedented 24 weeks and # 1 for five of those weeks. This talented man is a bona fide hit maker and we are proud to debut his second single on our syndicated radio show starting August 10." Hot on the heels of a successful European tour, Berry released his highly acclaimed CD, Keepsake last week with a star-studded party at Studio City Sound. Highlights of the tour included a concert at the 800th Venice Carnival, at the Palace Hotel in Zagreb, Croatia as well as shows in Italy, San Marino, Switzerland, Ireland and England. The tour came to a spectacular climax with "The Full Moon Concert" on July 15 in London at The Earls Court Festival. Like many overnight success stories, this one is many years in the making. It began in Reno, NV, where, at the age of three, Berry began tap dance and singing classes. Very quickly, it became clear that he was a natural. Straight from high school, after years of playing in bands, acting and singing in musicals, Berry moved to Hollywood. Within three years, he was performing in Europe and living in Paris, where his heartfelt, elegant style took hold and blossomed. In producing Keepsake, Berry had a very specific sound in mind. "Something old, something new," he says, "something that's been lost along the way, before click tracks, samples, loops and auto-tuned vocals." Working hands-on throughout the recording and engineering, Berry's unwavering directive was simple: "To capture an exquisite vocal and acoustic sound..just pure music." It has already been observed by many DJs, reviewers and listeners that Jay's musical instincts are right on the mark. According to Daryl Kirkup of Capital News, "One listens to the debut single from Jay Scott Berry's excellent new album Keepsake is the perfect introduction. This collection of timeless songs is brought to life with the combination of Jay's clear strong vocals and superb production. Captured brilliantly, Keepsake is set to bring the name of Jay Scott Berry to the attention of a growing legion of fans." For more information on Jay Scott Berry visit him at www.JSBmusic.com. The exotic allure of Jade's magic stems from her Chinese heritage and her childhood on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Jade took the male-dominated world of magic by storm in 1990, when she won first place in the International Brotherhood of Magicians' World Magic Competition. More importantly, a panel of celebrity judges honored her with the organization's coveted Gold Medal of Magic, a prize awarded only a handful of times in the competition's 20-year history. To date, she remains the sole woman to receive this honor. The renown from her win propelled Jade into appearances on foreign and national television. She has performed on the stages of variety theaters in Europe and Canada; luxury cruise lines like American Hawaii and Holland America; and casino revue shows in Atlantic City, Lake Tahoe, Biloxi, and Las Vegas. Monte Carlo 1994, the Royal Family of Monaco invited Jade to perform at the Princess Grace Theater, an honor she considers a highlight of her career. Portland Magic Jam: Sept 16-18 -------------------------------------------- Message by Greg Moreland We've set the date for this year's PORTLAND MAGIC JAM: Sept 16-18. (In beautiful Portland, Oregon.) We've pulled off a miracle, and lined up Gregory Wilson, Daniel Garcia, and Jon Armstrong! The www.PortlandMagicJam.com website has been updated with the latest information, and we've started to take registrations. For love of the game, we've kept the same low registration price: $85 in advance for adults, and $45 for juniors under 18, spouses, & parents. People can register now, and if they have to cancel, we'll gladly refund their money up to a week before the event. The price will raise to $95 in late August, then again to $105 at the door. If they'd like, people are welcome to pay half now and the other half at the door. (Though we don't have a PayPal button for that option - but people can send the PayPal amount from your own account, or mail a check.) The response to the venue has been overwhelmingly positive, so we're once again returning to the Portlander Inn. People love the multiple venue rooms, the 24-hour restaurant, the snack bar, the lounge, the convenience store, and the $70 rate for the hotel rooms (which includes 2 people in 2 beds!) We even have people posted on the website who'll help people find a ride or roommate. Find them on the "Registration / Contact" page on the website. Again, thanks for helping us spread the word! Rameses The Forgotten Star -------------------------------------------- Author: Christopher Woodward Rameses the Egyptian Wonderworker was an illusionist of the Edwardian era. Born Albert Marchinski in Poland in 1876, he grew up in London in a distinctly middle class home. But as Rameses, he achieved financial and artistic successes beyond the dreams of most entertainers. His fast moving, exciting and colourful illusions took him to the stage of London's prestigious Palladium eight times. In addition, he played England's top theatres and made triumphant tours of America South Africa and Europe. The highlight of his career was perhaps an appearance on the very first Royal Variety Performance attended by The King and Queen of England. Yet despite his theatrical triumphs, it was the stage that proved Rameses undoing. Little has been written about Rameses' life and magic despite his singular approach to illusions and a career most magicians would envy. Thanks to Chris Woodward's diligent research, his story can now be told. Rameses the Forgotten Star tells a rags to riches story that ends back in rags that was heretofore unknown. Along the way, readers learn the secrets behind Rameses' illusions (including his spectacular levitation), thrill at his theatrical conquests, and see how quickly that success slipped away. Award-winning author Chris Woodward is a member of the Grand Order of Water Rats, and Gold Star Member of The Inner Magic Circle of London. A 132 page deluxe clothbound edition, illustrated with rare photographs and memorabilia, color plates, and a satin bookmark ribbon. This exciting book can be ordered direct from www.Squashpublishing.com in Chicago or International Magic in London www.internationalmmagic.com or autographed copies from c.woodward@tesco.net -------------------------------------------- 20.
