More Remarkable Magic # 43 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Meet Mark Merchant. I have always been fascinated by the close link between magicians and ventriloquists. You seldom find a ventriloquist who didn't have a brush with becoming a magician before settling on his ultimate course in life. I often joke that our future careers depended largely upon which ad we answered on the back page of his favorite comic book; the one that loudly proclaimed, 'Fool Your Friends!' or the one with a man carrying a box on his back with the words, "Help!" emerging from it while an absurdly innocent kid stands next to him. Mark Merchant is a very fine ventriloquist who stood at that crossroads and decided on the second career plan. He has however retained a very active interest in magic and can often be seen performing at the Magic Castle and magic conventions. I am sure you are all familiar with the role of a ventriloquist at a magic convention---he is the one who gets all the big laughs in the gala show because he is the only non-magic act you see all week! If you have a chance to catch Mark perform you should grasp the opportunity. He is a very funny man who's understanding of comedy should be studied by many comic magicians. Like most ventriloquists he has taken a more serious approach to the comedy in his act than is often the case with his magical counterpart. It goes with the turf. Let's be honest, if you aren't delivering the laughs in a vent act then you may have made a very faulty career choice. The amount of serious ventriloquism acts can be counted on one hand and they are called puppeteers. Unlike magic nobody watches a vent just to admire his technique. Except of course another vent... Comedy magicians can often get the best of both worlds and deliver corny patter, hack humor and stock jokes that are forgiven by audiences who cut them way to much slack because of their magic skills. As a rule of thumb if you are doing a joke (or worse still-a zinger!) from a Robert Orben book then it is no longer funny--end of story. A ventriloquist, like a comedian, needs to be a lot more conscious of the source, quality and originality of his material. Because something is published in a book does not mean it should be lifted and placed directly into an act-need I add that 'finding' a joke in another performers act that fits your style is another short cut to hell. Mark has a gloriously edgy act in the manner in which he blends topical material (usually written on the day of the show) with his deliberately 'politically incorrect' puppets. He walks a tightrope every time he performs and given his success as a performer his audiences appreciate the balancing act. He makes it look so damn easy! One thing that can be learned watching Mark is the way he places his brand new/topical jokes upfront in his show. He doesn't try and ease them in after he has established himself with the crowd but rather keeps his tried and tested material for later in the show and allows the new stuff to stand on its own. Do all his new jokes work? Of course not-----topical material is much too risky for that to be a given. However, he does immediately establish himself as an innovator and an act to pay attention to. It is easy to become accustomed to the safe and sure and it can be very effective to see a performer remove the safety net; particularly, like Mark, when he has the ability of winning them back as and when needed. The nature of a ventriloquism show is, of course, perfectly designed for this since the performer has the benefits of the other half of a comedy team on the end of his hand without the unfortunate need to split his salary! If a gag backfires, his puppet can comment on the joke in question and often save the day. One other aspect of Merchant's work that invites careful study is how carefully he has defined the boundaries and nature of the characters he works with. The best comedy usually comes from a carefully devised character whose point of view is apparent even before the joke is told-- in the magic world think, Michael Finney, Jeff Hobson, Amazing Jonathan etc. Jon Stewart and Jay Leno can appear to be blissfully close to their street persona but just check out how many writers it takes to allow them to be so effortlessly themselves. I have had the pleasure of working with Merchant on many occasions and have always learned something and this is my ultimate test of a good performer. Mark is smart, talented and a very hard working performer both onstage and off. I often wonder what his act would have looked like if he had chosen the other ad in his Archie comic and become a magician and I suspect I would be singing his praises just as loudly. Magic For Tour Groups - #218 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com A different area of magic that pops up from time to time is how to conduct a "magic walk" or what I refer to as magic for tour groups. The best example of this type of entertainment event our ghost walks. It essentially is the ability to take a group on a tour and through the tour you are conducting both stories as well as applying magic to entertain the group. Having a "magic" walk is pretty cool. However, like any type of walk, it needs to be entertaining, interactive and engaging to the audience. It also needs to be worked out in full so you feel comfortable with what you are doing, what you will say and when. Unlike a standard show, you are not in any one set location for any given amount of time. You will be moving and will need to have the show structured to the walk and the areas you are taking them to. You certainly want to keep it a nice flow so you are not held up too long at any one spot. on the contrary, you also do not want to be moving so much that you get to the end of the walk before you have had time to tell the stories and share the magic. One really great way to study and do research for this type of event is to go and watch really good tour guides at historical places around your area. There are some really great ones and they really have it down well. You can learn a lot from studying them because essentially they have to do the same thing. they are telling stories and giving historical information as they travel around to different areas they are showing to you. Study how they talk and when. Figure out how they move people and how they engage and interact with you as they go from area to area. It is important for them that you be engaged at all times but to also stop enough to allow you to take in what you are seeing and being told. It would also make sense to walk the route and plan the route ahead of time if you can. This means to simply rehearse in the exact space you will be taking them through. After all the walk is the stage in which you will be performing in. In this fashion you can get used to picking out "stops" along the way. These are areas in which you can perform something more elaborate or can tell a more engaging story. As you walk and rehearse in the route you take them on, you may find perfect and logical areas in which you can utilize to your advantage. Perhaps there is a rock for you to sit on or some tree that allows you to tell an engaging story. Rehearse in the space so you know it well. As you are walking you can certainly engage them a bit in vocal conversation but you may not want to do magic. It would be hard for them to watch and also hard for you to walk and perform and talk at the same time. It would make sense then to engage them at the start and then walk to the next area. As you walk, think of it as a transitional time between acts or routines. You perform at a spot and then transition them (walking to next spot) to the next performance area. However, these areas are already figured out by you ahead of time. When you think about it, you are really creating a stage show in which you are walking them through the stage. the stage is vast and so you are taking them from one location to the next or one act to the next. The transitions happen as you walk to the next spot. This allows for engagement and for rest periods. You want to allow them to absorb the information you share and the magic you share. As you rehearse in the space, time yourself? Not only figure out where the stops are going to be, but figure out how long you will be at any one spot and how the overall timing is. This way you know for sure that the walk will be smooth and last the duration it needs to last. Once you figure out your stopping points, you then can get a better idea of how many routines you may need or may want to show. You can then start to base your routines on the areas that you are stopping at. perhaps something at that location allows you to share a better story or magical experience that ties in really well. So like any show, you have to rehearse it and figure it out. It is simply a different stage you are performing on, but a lot of the same rules apply. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. Tony Brook In Conversation With John Teo - Final Part -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA TB: John, you credit Magic with teaching you to be creative and to think out-of-the-box. This has helped you to advance in your business and Magic career. You have been a great influence on many of Asia's young star performers. When JC Sum and Magic Babe Ning took me to lunch they were full of praise and credited you with helping them a great deal. Do you have any general advice and/or suggestions for young up and coming Magicians? JT: From my perspective, I happen to strongly believe that magic is about communicating (selling) the effect to the audience. Apparatus and sleight-of-hand are the means to achieve this end. I think it is important also to think in terms of your spectators. If they don't understand what you are doing, your effect is probably too complicated. Make it simpler, cut out all the unnecessary parts, and your magic will be more effective. Develop your own style and don't copy other magicians. Have your own performing persona. And last but not least, the golden rule of magic - practice, practice, practice! TB: Wise words that transmit some excellent advice. Thank you John. As always a great pleasure. It has been delightful JT: Thank you Tony. My pleasure too.. And remember, just as soon as you get back to our part of the world, there is a standing dinner invitation to my favorite restaurant. tbrook47@gmail.com -------------------------------------------- 9. Broken Wand - Bill Andrews (US) -------------------------------------------- Message by Henry Lewis MIMC Hon. Vice President The Magic Circle My dear friends, I have no doubt that you already heard the sad news of the death of Bill Andrews. Bill was a MIMC and a great supporter of TMC and as you may remember he and Helen attended our Centenary. Bill was also a Past President of The Society of American Magicians. I 'phoned Helen only last week and she informed me that he was in a hospice and in a very poor condition and in a way it is good that he no longer is in pain and has eternal peace. I am sending this note because Bill was always very kind and supportive to me on my many visits to Beverly and I for one will always cherish the friendship he gave to Doris and me whenever we stayed with Avrom. He was a true gentleman and a credit to our art and I wanted to share my condolences to Helen with you all at this sad time. -------------------------------------------- 10. Steve Marshall Documentary -------------------------------------------- Message by Steve Marshall (Japan) I will be doing a magic lecture tour on the East coast of the USA this coming September. It will be my first time spending this long in the USA in almost 14 years. A friend of mine who is a film maker wants to follow me on this your and make a documentary about it. This is a chance of a lifetime for me and the story of coming back to the USA from Japan and being on the road for a month should provide a lot of interesting twists. We need to raise funds though for Nic (the film maker) to spend a month on the road with me and for other production costs. We are doing this through Kickstarter and offering rewards for different levels of funding. We only have a month to raise the goal money or we get nothing. If you could pass this announcement along I would really appreciate it! I'm REALLY hoping this will become a reality.
