Editor's Message -------------------------------------------- In 30 days time Luis de Matos (Portugal) will be staging his second online conference for magicians known as the Essential Magic Convention (EMC). I highly recommend that you all register if you haven't already - last year's one was absolutely fabulous. As Mel Kientz said in his Newsletter: "I had a chance to talk with Copperfield while I was still in my pajamas. The Magic Convention of the future is here today (well, in July, really). With gas and transportation costs going through the roof and hotel accommodation costing more and more, wouldn't it be easier to have the convention come to your house? The Essential Magic Conference (EMC - or electronic magic convention) is the world's first Internet-web conference for magicians. 33 speakers over 3 days of conference streamed live worldwide. Register to attend today - access passes are limited. The cost of registering for the conference is US$90 / EUR ?70." More Remarkable Magic # 38 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Working on Cruise Ships (part 5) Here is the second segment of my 'Tongue in Cheek' column about the people you will meet working on cruise ships and some not really golden rules to follow when you get booked. Performers are not the only people you will be working with. There is a strange breed of personnel known as techies: they are easily identifiable by the all black outfits they wear. Many of these sound/light technicians own more black clothing than Eugene Burger and Max Maven combined. Here are five simple rules to help you in your dealings with them. Don't bother writing formal cue sheets for technicians. It eliminates all the fun of guessing. Make sure you bring every prop you own onboard with you. There is never a problem with storage space onboard a cruise ship. Make your lighting needs as complex as possible. Two or three hours is a totally reasonable rehearsal time for a 40-minute show. Make your cues very obvious for a non-magician. Cues such as "Turn on the strobe lights after I clap my hands for the seventeenth time after pointing to the Asrah" are perfectly acceptable. If he can't follow simple cues like that he is an idiot. If your music cues are on a CD or Mini Disc make sure they are not in sequence. The sound tech is wearing black so he is supposed to be the expert; let him figure it out. Finally here are four golden rules to ensure your success. 1 It is an excellent idea to perform close-up magic at every possible moment. The very best time and place to perform your favorite close-up tricks is in the back of the showroom while another act is performing. There is no need to be more than adequate in your legitimate show if you put in enough hours with a chop cup. 2 If possible avoid watching any other comedic acts if you feature comedy in your show. That way you can remain unaware of any duplication. As everyone knows a good joke just gets better if you hear it twice. 3 Make it a point to explain to passengers how that trick that fooled them on their last cruise was done. It is really only common courtesy and may result in good feed back to the line. 4 If in doubt put in that clever version of the 20th Century Silk trick that ends up with a bra tied between the two handkerchiefs instead of the third handkerchief. It always gets a great reaction and is especially good for audiences that include children. Well, I certainly hope this article will help you fine-tune your 'Cruise Show' and if you follow my advice carefully then I am sure you will receive everything you deserve. Creativity Secrets - Creativity Journal - #213 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com If you want to be a better creative thinker of magic, then one important lesson is to realize that you got to start to write down the ideas as they come to you. Each and every day we are bombarded by ideas. The problem is that they go in one ear and out the other. These great ideas get lost in the wind. One idea I will share with you is what I refer to as a creativity journal. This is a concept derived from my art school days and I continue to do it to this day. It is an easy idea and one that is not new at all. However, I find it is new to a lot of magicians. It simply is any method that you can utilize to record your ideas. I keep one with me everywhere to be able to train myself to write stuff down. It helps you to recall ideas and trains your mind to being creative. If you want to be fit, you exercise your body. If you want to be creative, you must exercise your mind. Getting into the habit of recording your ideas helps you to do just that. The concept is to simply to keep with you a blank journal. It can be any size or format. Just something that works best for you and that you can easily and freely get to it and write ideas down. You then must have this everywhere you go. For myself, I keep on at home in my office and one by the bed. I keep a small one in my truck and one at work. This way whenever an idea pops into my head I immediately write it down. In this day and age of technology, you can also utilize devises like your cell phone or even cell phone applications to record your ideas or your thoughts. A great app is from Dragon Speech. Most of you are familiar with this. It allows you to say something into your phone or PC and it translates your voice into written word. It is a great way to be able to utilize your cell phone for recording ideas at any time including right after your show. You can then send those files to your PC at home and then have a huge database of ideas that is searchable by keywords. As you proceed to journal, do not hinder yourself with common creativity pitfalls. That is 1) thinking your ideas are ridiculous 2) that it is not fleshed out enough and 3) that you have no idea how to accomplish it. The goal is "free thinking". In free thinking there are no boundaries and there are no rules. You break down the barriers that hold you back. Any idea is a good idea and that needs to be written down by you. It has often been said that the reason you write thoughts down is that there is power in the process. When you write ideas in your creativity journals, you are basically planting a seed in your mind. This seed can grow. It tells the mind and teaches it that it is OK to open the mind up to receiving these kinds of creative thought. Get yourself into the habit of having creativity journals and use them often. Write down the thought when it comes to you no matter how silly it may seem to you at the time. Remember there are no rules and you are not being judged or graded on what you write in it. The power again is in the process of doing. You will soon realize that the more you do this, the more easily it becomes for you. Try it out and I promise you that if you do this daily for 30 days you will be simply amazed at the ideas you are generating. You will be amazed at what your own mind can generate if you train it. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. -------------------------------------------- 7. Tony Brook In Conversation With Valerie - Part 9 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA TB: Besides your act and lecture, what else do you do if you have time left (magically speaking of course)? V : I have been asked to work and make special quick-change for theater plays, musical comedies, movies, the chorus of well-known singer, circus new magic acts, etc. I still have a lot to do, even working on a new act and a new lecture that should be ready for next October. TB: What do you think of this new type of quick-change? I am thinking of those dancing couples. V : In my opinion, the Duo Sudarchikov (the "parents" of Quick-Change), act created in 1950, has been the very best of its kind. Their way of dancing and "quick-changing" was fantastic. To-day, especially, dancers from Eastern countries, want to compete to show as many different costumes they can change. I personally don't see where the Magic is in that . For me the only Quick Change Artist to-day is my close friend Arturo Brachetti. Such an Artist! For me, a quick-change has to be a surprise for the audience; when hoops are laying all along a stage, and picked up to effect a change, I don't see the element of surprise there, nothing magical. The audience is expecting it! The only thing they don't know is what the color of the next dress will be. Technically, it is a quick-change but I repeat, it is not a surprise and therefore not magical. TB :. As we come near to the end of our conversation, I must ask you to please share some words of advice to all up and coming Magicians and in particular any words of encouragement to young Lady Magicians. V : Nothing particular except that to succeed at anything requires dedication, discipline and lots of hard work. If any young lady Magician wants some advice, I'll be glad to help and share my some 25 years of experience. TB : Merci, Valerie. As always, a very great pleasure. Thank you so very much for all that you do. V : Tony, you are very welcome. The pleasure is all mine and please know that Gilles and I always have a special bottle of Bordeaux ready and waiting for you. tbrook47@gmail.com -------------------------------------------- 8. Pengragons Together Again? -------------------------------------------- Article forwarded on by Mel Kientz (US) Here is an interesting story from Trinidad and Tobago today. . . if you are in the area. . . the Pengragons together again. - Mel Experience the magic of the Pendragons by Michelle Loubon -Trinidad & Tobago Guardian Online Illusionists Jonathan and Charlotte Pendragon Sleight of hand, grand illusion, enchanting stories, mind-blowing effects, a touch of poetry and a good joke are among the slew of tricks which the Trini audience can expect from master illusionist Jonathan Pendragon. Children, too, who enjoy tales of fantasy and stories about witches, goblins, ogres, fairy godmothers and evil magicians will be enthralled by the Pendragons' repertoire. Pendragon is expected to perform at the Centre of Excellence, Macoya, Tunapuna next weekend. The theme of the show is Experience The Magic of the Pendragons (One of the Greatest Magicians Of Our Time). Pendragon has performed with his spouse Charlotte Pendragon in theatres and on television in over 50 countries. He has made more television appearances than any magician in history. The award-winning husband-and-wife team of California-based illusionists call their work "physical grand illusion." Charlotte Pendragon has been credited as an equal partner rather than an assistant. She has been honoured in her own right as a magician and has achieved notable firsts as a woman in the magic profession. From street magic to Guinness Book of records - In a previous interview (July 2006), Charlotte Pendragon described herself as a "contemporary woman" while her spouse said he was a "Renaissance" man. At the tender age of nine, Pendragon looked at a television show featuring veteran actor Orson Welles playing magician Cagliastro. He admired the work of Houdini and studied his biographies. Pendragon said: "Orson Welles presence was amazing...mesmerising. I went to the library and checked out every book on magic. I was so transfixed by Orson Welles, I thought I had to do that." After the couple tied the knot in 1976, they started doing street magic. Charlotte Pendragon said: "Street theatre is the best training for magic. You have to be good at your craft, because you don't have much time to attract people's attention. "You have to entertain people and do it fast. You have to learn the psychology of people. Street magic on television is not the same. There is the thrill of connecting with your audience." The couple boast about being able to do the transposition act with a box in 0.24 seconds. This feat got them into the Guinness Book of World Records, as the fastest magicians alive. More info . . . Midwest Magic Jubilee -------------------------------------------- Eugene Burger Joins the Midwest Magic Jubilee List of Headliners! He's amazed and delighted audiences from Las Vegas to Tokyo. Now he is going to grace the stage and close up table at the Midwest Magic Jubilee! As Stagebill magazine proclaimed, Eugene Burger is "universally recognized as perhaps the finest close-up magician in the world." "Close-up magic" is just that: magic performed right under your nose, where everyone becomes part of the show. And with Eugene Burger it is an unforgettable experience, for as the Chicago Reader noted in an unprecedented eleven-page cover story about him, "Burger adds something extra." His warmth and humor are captivating and his magic is simply amazing. By definition, magicians are pretty special people, but Eugene Burger is considered exceptional even by other magicians. He has written fifteen best-selling books for the trade, starred in eight instructional videos, lectured extensively to magicians' groups in over a dozen countries, and his writings have been translated into several languages. His deep understanding of the psychology and philosophy behind the magic have won him international accolades, cover stories in conjuring magazines, and four awards from the famed Magic Castle in Hollywood. But as much as he loves discussing magic with fellow performers, Eugene's true passion is bringing mystery and enchantment to the public, and at this he is unparalleled. His special presence has led to numerous television appearances in Great Britain, Canada, Belgium, Finland and Japan, and on such highly acclaimed shows as The Art of Magic on PBS and Mysteries of Magic on The Learning Channel. He's been profiled twice on CNN. When the leading international trade journal Magic magazine compiled its list of the one hundred most influential magicians of the twentieth century, Eugene Burger was included for his ability to "arouse feelings of astonishment, as well as a host of other indescribable sensations". Check out www.peterwardell.co.uk Oscar Munoz - Oscar Munoz is an IBM Gold Cups winner for Close-Up! This award has only been given a handful of times since its inception in the 50s. Oscar is also 'Family Entertainer of the Year' for his kid's magic. If that's not enough, Oscar also has a hilarious comedy stage act. He is truly one of the greatest all rounders in magic today. A few short years ago Oscar was the guest at the New Zealand national convention and became an instant hit, making many friends down there. The Kiwis have been leaning on me ever since, insisting that Oscar is the perfect guest for our weekend convention. I'm delighted he has agreed to be with us. http://oscarmunoz.com/ Sean Taylor and Richard Paddon will present a brand new PsycheFX mentalism lecture, demonstrating and teaching new techniques in mentalism, memory and psychic entertainment More acts to announce as the show grows nearer! The AbraCORNdabra Magic Convention -------------------------------------------- Message by Steve Daly The AbraCORNdabra Magic Convention held in Altoona, Iowa was a HUGE success! As promised - folks were buzzing about the convention with nothing but praise for this first time annual event. Jammed packed with things for everyone to participate in - and a lot of surprises that caught many off guard for a Midwestern Magic Convention in IOWA - Has everyone talking about next year's spectacular convention! We even had 3 Alan Watson Magic New Zealand readers attend with a discount just by mentioning they were subscribers! Here's some of the things attendees were saying... Simone Marron of Florida *(And Scotland) - who is a well-known attendee of Magic Conventions across the Globe, said, "AbraCORNdabra was Fantastic! The Gala Show was better than the national magic convention gala shows! and I have seen them all!" The S.A.M. Midwest Regional Vice President, Jeff Sikora wrote in his June Newsletter, "In May I had a couple of opportunities to get out and meet some of you. May 20th & 21st, I had the pleasure of attending Abra-Corn-Dabra in Altoona, Iowa (just outside of Des Moines). The surprises started the minute I got there when I ran into S.A.M. National First Vice President, Chris Bontjes. It was terrific meeting old friends and making some new ones. As far as the convention itself went, I'd give it high marks. Very high marks. There were several things that impressed me. First of all, the talent; Oscar Munoz, Jade, Christian & Katalina...the list goes on. The auction was great. I got some good deals. They had some stuff I've never seen before. The shows were all outstanding, especially the show at the Palace Theatre in Adventureland Amusement Park. The Dealer Room had a nice variety of stuff from basic tricks to high-end collector pieces. They even had large illusions for sale. I was also very impressed with how everything both started and ended on time. But what really wowed me was the attention to detail and the "little" things that were offered. Things like a really nice folio and note pad; free pastries on Saturday morning; a free buffet brunch on Saturday afternoon; a free pizza party on Friday night; a well-organized autograph party on Saturday night with a FREE full-color poster; Free trolley rides to and from Adventureland Park for the show on Saturday night. It was clear that a lot of thought and planning went into Abra-Corn-Dabra, and if this is what the first year looked like, I can't wait to see what next year is going to be like! Kudos to Steve Daly on a terrific convention. See you next year." AbraCORNdabra will be May 18th, 19th, 20th, 2012. And the surprises are already in the works! I will give you a hint.... One event involves an armed guard! Stay Tuned! There will be special offers for Alan Watson's Magic New Zealand readers only offered soon! -------------------------------------------- 18. Duck Cameron - Scams & Roadcases -------------------------------------------- Message by Duck Cameron (Aust) Anyone locally (Melbourne, Australia) needing roadcases at a great price, drop me a line at duckmagic.com and I will send photos and prices. Different sizes (a couple that are perfect 'prop boxes' for travelling) and one that has wheels and a pull out handle - like a carry-on luggage case. All in great condition....I just seem to have a problem collecting too many boxes! E-mail duck@duckmagic.com And for something completely different.....just received the below e mail scam....photographers were hit....now it seems entertainers are next! Beware!!! E Mail 1. Good day, my name is Bob, I am preparing for my wedding which will come up on the 30th of July 2011. by 10:00am here in NSW 2086 French's Forest Australia, As I was searching for the best magician to make the day a memorable day for me and my wife. I saw your advert and I am really impressed about your performance. and you are going to start by 12:00pm and end 1:30pm, How much will you collect if you are to entertain my guess with the travel expenses....I am having 50 guest. Hope to read back from you. E Mail 2. Good to hear back from you. I am okay with the amount and I really want the best from you to make the day a memorable day for me and my sweetheart. I am in France right now with my sweetheart for our wedding shopping and we will be back soon. I will instruct my PA to issue a certificate Check for you and you will have to help me with the remaining amount because I have a videographer booked that will cover the day for me. My PA will send you a check of $4,000 and you will help me send the remaining amount to the videographer. Let me know if you can help me with that. Let me have your full name and address where the check will be send to. Hope to read back from you soon. Best Regards. Bob They send you a check....you bank it....they cancel the booking...asking for money back, minus cancellation fee - how nice of them! (or in the above case, sending a portion of the forwarded cheque amount back to them..(the 'videographer')...you send money, having noted credit in your account of initial check payment, and then....like magic....your bank a couple of weeks later deducts initial credit...as it bounced! (This works, for banks can credit amount, before getting notice of lack of funds from international cheques). Sort of ironic...trying to fool those that make an honest living by fooling! Now Available Kodell -------------------------------------------- Message by Jeff Pierce Now Available Kodell: Do Something Different the biography of magician Jack Kodell. For a lifetime, Kodell traveled the world with his unique creativity, and a flight of birds. Headlining long running shows around the world in five-star venues from the Moulin Rouge and the Lido in Paris, the London Hippodrome, The Savoy Hotel, and the London Palladium in the United Kingdom, and the Ed Sullivan Show, New York's Copacabana, and The Latin Quarter in the United States. He also accomplished a number of firsts in his career including being the first magician to perform in Las Vegas. Kodell always strived to be different with his magic and his life. From flying an airplane at the age of nine to doubling at the Moulin Rouge and the Lido for one year in his early thirties. To quote the legendary magician Channing Pollock, "Thanks Kodell for paving the way for me and other magicians to follow." When he retired from show business at the young age of thirty-three he had five years of contracts sitting on his manager's desk. So why would someone walk away from show business at such a young age? Kodell had the best of both worlds, a privileged life, and his wildest dreams coming true. All thanks to Doing Something Different in the world of magic. Guy Cater - Hypnotist - Comedy Magic Act -------------------------------------------- Message by Guy Cater (NZ) Spent 30 hours traveling to get here we left Tokoroa to go Auckland International airport and flew to LAX and had a six hour wait to fly Delta to Salt Lake City in Utah where there was a two hour wait to fly to Cynthia's hometown, Casper in Wyoming. Her Dad looks after our car. Did three Hypno Shows in Wyoming before a two day drive down to California. Went through the whole four seasons on the trip .. was snowing and difficult driving coming over the Rockies, rain and sunshine through Utah, scorching sun across Nevada and then overcast as I entered California. First Stop was Sacramento where I did a series of Grad Night Shows... usually to about 150/300 17 and 18 year olds (depending on the school). All these shows are in the early hours of the morning.. most shows start at 3am!! Then drive down the I-5 to Los Angeles for a couple more Grad Nights and a Comedy Club (no Hypno in the Comedy Clubs - I do my Comedy Magic act). A few days off staying at Hypnotist Barry Jones place in Encinitas before returning to Sacramento for more grad Nights and one more Comedy club. Also did Colfax about 30miles east of Sacramento. Just love these shows... the kids are brilliant and on an average night (morning) I would 20/25 subjects in a state of trance. Just outrageous (but clean) shows. As I write this I am in Fresno and looking forward to visiting Hocus Pocus Magic Shop tomorrow. Then back to Sacramento for my final Grad Night 3am to 4.30am and as soon as that show is finished I will be back in car to drive down to San Diego as I have a corporate show there at 6.15pm. Pray that freeways are kind to me. My final show here this year is the next day at a Chabad in San Diego... a Jewish Temple celebrating its 25th anniversary. Rabbi Goldstein has told me of some of the protocol that must be observed so my Hypno Show will be a little different from Normal. I hope this Gentile can do them proud. I will be doing my Comedy Magic as a first act so that should help to make them like me ... I hope. Then I have a week off which will be visiting friends, and most importantly, taking care of the shopping list Cynthia has given me!!! Credit card don't let me down!!! One last thing .. I have being doing this tour for 10 years now and Every Year it happens ... happened in Sacramento last week. The school also had a close-up Magician, and when he found out I was from New Zealand he asked the question I am so used to .. "Do you know Alan Watson?" Alan, you are a legend mate. -------------------------------------------- 22. e-zine Archives -------------------------------------------- Back issues of the Magic New Zealand e-zine go to: www.magicnewzealand.com click on the red button center right "Archives" When you enter the archive the e-zines are in issue order and are Coded, e.g. 001 Nov06 1999.txt first three numbers (001) denote issue number, then the date (Nov06) and the last figures the year (1999) -------------------------------------------- 23.
