You will "Bomb" - #207 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com "You're Da Bomb". A slang term signifying satisfaction, success and acceptance. However the term "bombing" has an entirely different meaning for an entertainer. To say that one has "bombed" means defeat, failure or a really bad outing. Like a bad disease, it can happen at any time and anywhere regardless if you are new to magic or if you are a seasoned pro. Bombing on stage hurts and it hurts down to the soul. It deflates our ego, shatters our dreams and defeats our sense of creativity and self-worth. We dwell on it and start to wonder if what we do is even good enough anymore. For some, this is failure at its worst. For others, this is a good thing. How can bombing be good you ask? Well it is all in how you view life. Do you see the cup has half full or half empty? Failure of any type does not have to always be seen as failure. Failure is actually a stepping stone to success. If you learn even one thing from any form of failure, they you have progressed forward. If you want to be creativity thinker in the art of magic I will tell you this....."You WILL fail. You WILL bomb." This is not to scare you but to have you realize it will happen and not to fear it. Some of the greatest historians and figures from our past got to where they were because they "bombed". Thomas Edison failed over 90 times at a filament before finding the right one that allowed for the electric light bulb. What would have happened if he stopped after the first failure? Where would we be as humans if people stopped progressing when something went horribly wrong? As an entertainer, the beauty is in creation, discovery and finally execution of an idea. However, it is very rare that any new idea is perfect the first time out. In many cases a final routine or act got that way through many failures along the way. You start with a concept and you work it and test it, it "bombs" and you go back and evaluate why. Asking yourself WHY is not a bad thing. You must accept that bombing on stage is part of the creative process. Sure it hurts, but I think it can also be changed to force you to move forward. It can be a motivational tool that drives you to prove an idea works. In many ways, bombing can be the biggest reason why any act or idea advances as far as it does. It can drive us inside and feed our desire to make something right. We must take a step back and evaluate and accept the sheer fact that we are not perfect. An idea evolves and as it evolves it becomes better and more refined each time out. Bombing on stage should never be seen as an "end". Too many folks view it as closure and never pursue it further. Failure hurts so they tend to take the easy way out the next time around or they fail to be creative all together. Do not allow yourself to fall victim to this thinking. Accept the fact that if you want to be as creative as you can be, you WILL bomb. You WILL fail. However, through all of this evolves an act or idea that through failure blossoms into an amazing thing. The growth you go through is huge. The learning process one takes is enormous and the final applause from the audience makes it all worth the journey. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. Tony Brook In Conversation With Valerie - Part 3 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA V: So thank you for asking I shall be pleased to share with you some of my memories of that day. Can you imagine me been selected to perform my act in 2001 . such a fantastic day, and then being awarded. Then back-stage being congratulated by Siegfried & Roy, Penn & Teller, Lance Burton, Lynette Chappell, Gay Blackstone, Irene Larsen, Just totally Wow!...... like in a dream. Norbert Ferré was there too and got the Creativity Award. He is such a great artist. TB : Yes. He most certainly is I know. We have all shared some fun times together. But there's a funny story about driving and the FISM Grand Prix.. V : Ah ! Yes! very funny . July 2003, coming from Marseille where he lives, he stayed at my house before driving together to FISM in Holland. On the way there, I told him "Careful, if you don't become World Champion and get the Grand Prix, I am not driving you back. You get your own car and chauffeur! " Well as you know he won The Grand Prix .and after a lot of good-natured kidding .and yes before you ask, we did drive him back ! TB : He! He! Going back to the Sarmoti Award in Vegas. I had a wonderful conversation over lunch one day with my dear pal Walter Blaney about his winning the award as well. Just as soon as you enter his home you can't miss it. It's right there on the wall. When I hosted my Talk Show at the TAOM 2008 in Fort Worth he and I talked about that. So in a way, I can understand how important that the Sarmoti award is to those of you who have been awarded it. Anyway, changing the subject slightly, do you remember that at the time you told me that that you were not even sure about going to Vegas. funny how things turn out. or is it Magic? V : Yes I remember. And yes, it is funny how things turn out and it is magic. I want to say right here and now how very honored and privileged I feel being a recipient of this prestigious award. It is even more special today because of the fact that Siegfried & Roy being heavily associated with that award. We all know of the tragedy, and so as the award won't be presented anymore... well, not like it used to be... it makes me very grateful and honored that I have one. I am also very happy that I am a lady magician in an area of show-business that is generally not very full of lady magicians. We have to work sometimes 100% harder to be successful in Magic. So the award has an even deeper meaning. In my home also, it's right there on the wall in a special place.. Final Issue Of The Minotaur -------------------------------------------- Message by Marv Leventhal Editor-in-Chief The Minotaur The Minotaur was a quarterly magic magazine published in the 1990s by Marv Leventhal and Dan Harlan. The publication mysteriously disappeared prior to the appearance of Volume 8 Number 4, and as such left its subscribers in the lurch with one issue left on their subscription. Well, after all these years, Marv and Dan have finally come out with Volume 8 Number 4 on DVD packed with 25 effects of all genres. They are happy to announce that all subscribers to The Minotaur who were due to receive Volume 8 Number 4 will receive this DVD for free to fulfill their subscription obligations. However, the passage of time has rendered their subscriber database with a boatload of inaccurate address information. As such, Marv and Dan request that subscribers due to receive Volume 8 Number 4 send them an email to theminotaur@me.com with their current address. If you were a subscriber but not sure if you were due this last issue, write them anyway and they will check their subscriber database to see if you are due this DVD. If you were not a subscriber, you can still purchase the DVD along with a second DVD of bonus material from www.danharlanmagic.com. -------------------------------------------- 12. We are planning to fly over to London from USA legendary performer Jack Kodell ( the first magician to use budgies in his Act ) and his wife Mary Naylor, herself a famous Variety Star in the UK in the 1940's, and also hopefully Marvyn Roy ( Mr Electric ). Also, we are bringing over John Calvert, who will have celebrated his 100th Birthday in August, and of course Tammy. To help us to honour these Magic Legends and let them walk onto the unique London Palladium stage one more time, we've set up a special fund for the magic community to make a donation towards the cost of their travel . The Swedish Magic Circle 65 Years -------------------------------------------- Message by Christina Nyman President Magica Club Lëtzebuerg/Luxembourg On the 3rd of March 1946 about 50 gentlemen and one lady did meet at the Carlton Hotel in Stockholm to found the Swedish Magic Circle (SMC). Although SMC thus reached retirement age last month it's activities have by no means decreased, and the members of the board are young and dynamic. The president Axel Adlercreutz is a prime example. He is 22 years old (!) and current Nordic Magic Champion. At the recent general assembly it was announced that SMC has managed to obtain 74 new members during the last year. Old and new members can look forward to a diversified program during the spring monthly meetings: a collector's treasures of historical props and automata, an actor's/magician's take on secrets in magic and how to construct an act and a lecture from David Stone, France, about how to entertain as a professional magician. Besides the national activities the Swedish Magic Circle cooperates with other magic associations on an international level to promote magic. SMC hosted FISM in Stockholm 2006. A key player on the national and international arena is Gay Ljungberg who continues to bring many international artists to Sweden. At FISM 2012 in Blackpool he will also be competition manager for the stage competitions for the third time in a row. Other well-known members of SMC are Johnny Lonn, Tom Stone, Joe Labero, John Houdi, Tim Star, Johan Ståhl, to name a few. http://www.svenskmagiskcirkel.se -------------------------------------------- 15.
