Two shows daily 12.14pm & 4.00pm from Thursday 21st to Monday 25th April. Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com -------------------------------------------- 2. Academy Of Magical Arts Honors Stage Magicians -------------------------------------------- Article forwarded on by Mel Kientz (US) by BWW News Desk Johnny Thompson presents Lance Burton with Masters Fellowship Award For 83 years, the movie industry has had the Oscars. For 65 years, Thespians have had their TONYS. For 63 years, the television arts have had the EMMYS, and for 63 years, the field of music has had the Grammys and now, for 43 years, the world of Illusion and magic has had ... unofficially, their Miltons (if they named it after its co-founder, Milt Larsen : see below). Despite the fact that the artistry of illusion and magic can trace its roots as far back as the Egyptian Pharos - predating film and television my centuries - they are younger sibling of the award shows. On April 10th, 2011, many of the world's greatest illusionists, magicians and sleight of hand experts gathered to honor their own. Performers of international acclaim, such as Jean-Philippe Loupi, Topas, Dominic Lacasse, Jonathan Pendragon and An-Ha-Lim took center stage at the Avalon Hollywood Theatre, under the skillful direction of their host, Jonathan Levit (From ABC's Flash Forward, Fox's Master of Illusions and VH1's Celebracadabra). Selected honorees and nominees for 13 categories were on hand to receive accolades from their peers. Tonight's winners included: Dana Daniels (Stage Magician of the Year); Andrew Goldenhersh (Parlour Magician of the Year); David Regal (Lecturer of the Year), and the first female nomination and winner of Close-up Magician of the year, Suzanne. Other coveted awards went to -- eight time TONY award winner from "Liza" to "LA Cage," Jules Fisher, who received the Special Fellowship Award; for entertaining US Troops and Iraqi/Afghani children in Army hospitals, William Scott Anderson received the Award of Merit; Bob White (Performing Fellowship Award); Franz Harary (Performing Fellowship Award); Stan Allen (Literary Fellowship Award); Jeff Black (Junior Achievement Award); Dean Dill (Creative Fellowship Award); Topas (Magician of the Year); John Daniel (Lifetime Achievement Award) and, following in the steps of greats such as Sigfried & Roy and Harry Blackstone, Lance Burton was this year's recipient of the Masters Fellowship Award. Presenter for this year celebration included Rico Rodriguez (Modern Family), Keith David (The Cape), Marina Sirtis (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean) as well as a star studded audience that included Debby Ryan, Kate Linder, Tippi Hedren , Raini Rodriguez, Alison Arngrim, Romi Dames, Quentin Aaron, Josh Moore, Dawn Olivier, Richard Sherman and Fred Willard. The Academy of Magical Arts, Inc. is a non-profit social order of nearly 6000 members worldwide devoted to the advancement of the art of magic. One of their primary focuses is to promote a positive image of magic and magicians. The organization promotes the art of magic, encourages fellowship and maintains the highest ethical standards for the art. Their clubhouse, the Magic Castle, is one of the most unique private clubs in the world. It is a Victorian style mansion turned into a clubhouse where members and their guests enjoy world-class magic and magicians share their trade secrets with each other. -------------------------------------------- 3. Teller And Todd Robbins - Play Dead -------------------------------------------- Message by Teller (US) Teller and Todd Robbins invite Death out to play in Play Dead, a new spirit-shaking Off-Broadway show inspired by "Midnight Spook Shows," an American institution from the 1930s to the 1970s. As the guide for the evening, Robbins draws audiences into an unknown haunted world full of frightful surprises and diabolical laughter. Although very much a theatrical work, it is hardly a typical "play," but rather a dramatic, unnerving thriller - here and now in an "abandoned" theater, illuminated by a single ghostlight - in which audiences test their nerves and face their fears as they are surrounded by ethereal sights, sounds and even touches of the returning dead - all achieved by wry, suspenseful storytelling and uncanny stage illusions. Providing An "Experience" - #205 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com So many magicians fail to see what they do as a business. If you get paid even 1 cent for the magic you do you are in a business. If you get paid for your magic you are also a professional. There is no semi-professional. That gives the impression that you are not trying to be professional in what you do. In my mind you are either a professional or you are not. With this concept in mind, you are a professional at all times. It does not start when the curtains open and end when they close. A professional entertainer is one always. It is the way you conduct yourself on the phone, the way you dress, the way you talk to the client's guests and so much more. Every point of contact from the moment the lead comes in to long after the event is over, you are there to be a professional, act like a professional and give that client not just a show. You are much more than that. Why is the person hiring you in the first place? Many may say "to perform a show for their guests." However, in reality, they have a need that they want a solution for. Consumers do not buy anything unless there is a need that they are searching for an answer to. You need to find out that those needs are and then offer a solution that meets and exceeds those needs. Think about it for a second. You would never go to a mechanic unless there was a need you had for your car to be fixed or looked at. You don't go to the grocery store unless there is a need to restock on food items for the family. Likewise, folks do not buy entertainment unless there is a need for it. We must also realize that the need they have goes much deeper than the classic thinking of "oh we just want our guests to be entertained". That may very well be true, but their needs often are far greater than that. It can be a variety of things such as: - we have a need to raise money for our group or school - we want the kids at the summer reading program to be rewarded for reaching a certain level of books. So this show becomes all about goal setting - we have a need for the children to be empowered because they are mentally challenged and we want ways in which to teach them how to interact in a fun way - we have a need for a show to educate children on an anti-drug or anti-bullying message so that they understand and learn ...and the list goes on and on. We must stop thinking we are there to just give the service of performance. If we are in the business of magic, then we must realize that it is called show business for a reason. So how does one provide an experience over just a service? Well for starters, we must learn a very powerful word. The word is a short word and only 3 letters but has the power to move mountains....."ASK". You would be amazed at how many entertainers simply do not ever ask the client things they really need to know. We often just assume or never ask in the first place. If you are to be a solutions provider, you need to learn the real need or needs the client have. To best find those out, we simply ask them. "Michelle, can you tell me the ultimate goal of your event and what are you trying to accomplish that evening?" This gets them talking. It is no longer about you hard selling to them. You are showing an interest in THEIR event and asking them to tell you what their needs are. Once you get them talking, it is much easier to be able to have the ability to offer solutions that directly answer their needs. You start to do this and your perceived value climbs high in the mind of the client. they no longer see you as magician A, B or C. They see you as for who you really are. They remember YOUR name because you are providing something no one else can or is willing to do. Now the "experience" can continue and should continue throughout the entire booking process, show process and long after the show is even over. You are building relationships with these folks. The more you build the relationship, the more power you have to keep these folks as repeat clients year after year. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. Tony Brook In Conversation With Valerie - Part 1 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA During the course of my duties as the Competitors Host at FISM 2000 I met a lot, and I mean a lot of magicians. Amongst the very best were Valerie and her husband Gilles. Tempus Fugit! That was over a decade ago. Since then, we have become good family friends. We have kept in touch and often hung out together at magic conventions in various parts of Europe and the US. Over the years, we shared a great many fun times together but one of the more memorable ones was in New Orleans with our mutual friend and FISM Grand Prix winner Norbert Ferré. Valerie is a very accomplished magical performer and a very well respected International Entertainer. She has accumulated an impressive list of International awards, which also include such coveted ones as The Silver Wand in Monte Carlo and The Grand Prix Sarmoti in Las Vegas. I personally love the way her mind works as I greatly admire her capacity for lateral thinking. She is the originator and The Queen of many astonishing quick-change effects and ideas. Although he is a skilled Magician in his own right, her husband Gilles remains in the background but is continuously hard at work both on and off stage with the myriad of tasks and logistics that go a long way towards her incredible and delightful performances. TB : Bonjour Valerie. Thank-you for taking the time to converse a while. It has been a while since we have had an opportunity to converse. V : Bonjour Tony. It is always a great pleasure to spend time with you. Yes, indeed. It has been a while; although I know that you and Gilles speak to each other quite often and he keeps you up to date on all our news. TB : Yes that's right ; he and I try to make time to keep in touch. I love his sense of humor and we are always kidding each other. Anyway, let's get back to you. You live in Paris, France and almost everyone refers to you as the Lady magician from France. That is true. but you actually got started in Switzerland. Share some of those early years with us. V : Well, this may come as a surprise to many people but when I was a little girl I didn't have the usual dreams that most little girls have. mine was a bit unusual. I wanted to become a Master Carpenter & Cabinet Builder. I loved tools and had more fun spending time in hardware stores than in fashion stores. I just loved to fix things and build things. Little did I know then that those skills would become so useful to me when it came to creating my own props. TB : I heard from someone (and I won't say who) that even today you would rather get a new electric tool than a bouquet of roses !!!! V : Hmmm ! I wonder who told you that. Well, in a way that is true... I have a lot of tools in my workshop but I still enjoy browsing in hardware stores. and oh ! By the way, I am also a very feminine lady and am also happy to receive a bouquet of roses !!! Send comments & corrections to:- tbrook47@gmail.com ) -------------------------------------------- 8. Good News, David Ginn! -------------------------------------------- Message by David Ginn (US) Today I did my first show since the back surgery! My friend Becca drove me 10 miles and assistant Jeannie met us there. They unloaded with a custodian's help, and David lifted nothing over 3 lbs. I actually walked into a school with NO CANE for the first time in 10 weeks! I had no pain before/during/or after the show, PTL! This is not to say I will have no pain during recovery. That can happen while the nerve heals, I'm told. But this was a good start. And so far today I've used only used Advil instead of the prescription pain pills. The show went very well according to Becca & Jeannie (they watched it). I stood about 25% of the show and sat on the stool 75%. I am still not used to walking/standing for too long. I must build up my strength & stamina. According to my agreement with Lynne, I rested for 4 hours on the den sofa after the show. But based on today's success, I am doing another make-up show Friday morning. So I will do TWO this week (without driving or lifting). We see the neurosurgeon Monday afternoon for my checkup. I am ready to listen to what he wants me to do: to build up my strength, preserve my back, and be able to do school shows for 10 more years! But between these shows I really am TAKING IT EASY. Book Co-Authored By Paul Gordon And Tom Craven -------------------------------------------- Message by Tom Craven Last Sept. 7th, I started to write a book with all the magic tricks, routines, effects that I have invented, come up with etc. in my 48 years in magic. The book is in the final stages of proofing and then will be sent to the publisher to print and bind. It will be hard bound, 8 1/2 X 11, over 200 pages (depends on how the publisher does the layout) and over 140 tricks. A lot of card magic, and a lot of non-card magic. The card magic will have all of my "Keeper " routines from the "Keeper" book co-authored by Paul Gordon and myself, all of my routines from all three of the 16th card books (again by myself and Paul), and my nine false cuts (featured in my one man Parade in the Linking Ring magazine, and all of the other card effects of mine, some of which were sold commercially. Many routines that have never been in print before. The non-card magic consists of ring and rope effects, tricks with silk hanks, matches, silk cabby, rope, flash paper, mental effects, etc. Most of the material has been published over the years in lecture notes, The Linking Ring (Card Corner and Parades), Apocalypse, Trapdoor, Minotaur, Magick, Pabular, and Precursor magazines. Some items from Harry Lorayne's Best of Friends (all three volumes,) and in Steve Beam's Semi-Automatic Card Tricks series. I expect the book to be available sometime in late May 2011, and am offering a $15 discounted price of $60 for pre-publish orders. Anyone ordering the pre-published book, will also get the choice (free) of either, my Ring and Rope DVD, or my 4 coins and a purse DVD. And.... I will also pay postage in the U.S., which will be $4.95 after the book is published. That makes the savings total $20. If anyone is inclined to pre order, I do take PayPal (vipmagic@aol.com), and they need to specify the preference of which DVD. Books will also be autographed on request. This will be a limited edition, and will not be reprinted. -------------------------------------------- 19. Proud To Announce The Release Of - A Cut Above -------------------------------------------- Message by Julie Eng (Canada) Magicana is proud to announce the release of: A Cut Above. A Cut Above is a joyful exploration of one-handed cuts created or documented by Msgr. Vincent Foy, a pioneer of the modern movement of card flourishes. His contributions on this subject that appeared initially in The Linking Ring and in Bertram on Sleight of Hand, inspired a new generation of finger-flingers. Msgr. Foy, who is 95-years young, revisits his notes to give us 100 one-handed glorious cuts, most of his own invention. A Cut Above comes complete with an insightful introduction that examines the history and place for card cuts and flourishes in the modern repertoire and an annotated bibliography of other books and DVDs that the reader may want to explore. Standing Ovation For John & Tammy Calvert -------------------------------------------- Message by Eddy Lester (US) Just got back home to Naples, FL after attending the South Carolina Association of Magicians annual convention (S.C.A.M). It is well run by Helen and Henry Pettit and the local IBMers. John Calvert was the headliner of the convention. He closed the Saturday night public show. He and Tammy received a standing ovation from the magicians and the locals attending the show. John said the hardest part of the event for him was signing all the autographs! Next up for the Calverts will be Fantasma's Magic On Manhattan in June. -------------------------------------------- e-zine Archives -------------------------------------------- Back issues of the Magic New Zealand e-zine go to: www.watson.co.nz/fezine.html When you enter the archive the e-zines are in issue order and are Coded, e.g. 001 Nov06 1999.txt first three numbers (001) denote issue number, then the date (Nov06) and the last figures the year (1999) -------------------------------------------- Privacy Policy and Copyright Notice -------------------------------------------- Our subscriber list is NOT made available to any other companies or individuals.
