Magic At Myrtle Beach Convention Jan 20-22 -------------------------------------------- Message by Obie Obrien (US)   I wasn't going to attend this small convention but a friend called me Thursday morning who had an extra Registration so I decided to go. I am really glad I did as it was one of the best I have been to in a long time.   David Tanner and Roman Lapree went all out for the 180 people that attended. The opening Thursday night show was different and the food they supplied made for a wonderful evening. I won't tell you everything as Mike Heitman will probably cover the convention later.   The talent was excellent. Topas from Germany did 3 performances, so did Charlie Frye, you might say he did 4, as he performed twice on Sat. night.   Other performers that were there, Chris Capehart, Christian and Katalina, Levent, (all doing 3 performances), Nathan Kranzo, Jay Sankey,Shoot Ogawa and Coney Island Chris, plus a few others who I can't remember. All were excellent.   The theater was super and a big crowd for the Saturday night show in the Dolly Pardon theater. What impressed me the most was the hotel? Imagine rooms at $49 a night on the Beach. Great dealers room etc. Restaurants close by at good prices.   The Sat. night final party with finger food back at the hotel was a great closing party. Those of you who missed this convention should plan on it for 2012 as it will be bigger and better. I hope to see you there. OBIE   -------------------------------------------- 4. Meetings With Remarkable Magicians # 17 -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US)   MagiCares.   I would like to draw your attention this week to a very fine new charity and the man who created it. The charity is called 'MagiCares' and the man behind its creation is Paul Stone.   In the spirit of full disclosure I should mention that I have known Paul since we were in our tender teen years, when we were both students of the late, great Ken Brooke. While I primarily pursued the performers roll, Paul has become a first rate producer of special events.   Paul never lost his magical and variety roots and has been responsible for presenting many highly successful shows along these lines. He has produced nearly a score of shows at the greatest variety house in the world 'The London Palladium'.   Tough and prestigious as it is to 'play' the Palladium, it's even tougher to produce events there. While still maintaining his corporate production events, Stone has quietly begun to implement a long-term ambition. He has created a charity designed to allow magicians to do their bit in helping the community. It was high time something new was done in this direction.   Paul launched the charity in conjunction with his tribute to Siegfried and Roy at the London Palladium in September of 2008. The event was a huge success and pivotal in planting the seed of the idea that blossomed into the recently released Bookstravaganza: 'Siegfried & Roy: Unique in the entire World'. A part of the profits from the book are being donated to 'MagiCares: the Magicians Charity'.   There are some very neat ideas being introduced.  The Mission statement for MagiCares is: 'Dedicated to helping transform the lives of those in need around the world through the goodwill of the international magic community. I prefer the way it is expressed in the bi-line to the charity logo: 'When Magic Cares, Miracles Happen'.   Already being planned is another September event at the London Palladium. This event will celebrate the centennial year of this wonderful theatre and pay tribute to the amazing list of magicians who have walked its boards, mix in the centennial birthday of the legendary John Calvert and an all-star cast and you have the makings of another great event. Paul has a tendency to aim high and hit his mark.   There is a delightful twist involved also, 100 magicians (both stand-up and close-up performers) will be allowed to participate and be an exciting extra feature of the event. This will allow each person to perform at this ultimate venue, take that walk to centre stage and take a bow with the full Palladium orchestra playing you on. Your photograph onstage featured in your press book and publicity forever. If you want to know more about taking part in the Palladium show, email producer@palladiummagic.com   On a worldwide basis there is also an excellent project being launched, with magicians around the world donating the proceeds of just one show they perform in the year. It doesn't have to be your best-paid show, just an average standard run of the mill gig. The resulting funds will be split with one share remaining in the region/country and the remainder going into the International fund to continue the excellent work that 'MagiCares' is doing around the world.   I have already volunteered for both these projects and it gives me great pleasure to be able to use my talents to benefit those in need. This is how the magic world can unite to be of benefit to the people who really need it---just by doing a show! How simple and elegant.   Congratulations to Paul Stone for coming up with this idea, it was long overdue and has finally arrived - be a part of it!   I will keep you informed of developments right here in Magic New Zealand.  Let's all get behind a way to share our skills and prove that 'When Magic Cares, Miracles Happen'.   As always feel free to drop me an email at http://www.nicklewin.com   -------------------------------------------- 7. Strolling Magic For Children - #195 Kyle & Kelly Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron with Kelly Peron magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com   Why am I writing about this? It's something I feel that performers often overlook and something I feel strongly about. Performing strolling magic for children 5 and under. A lot of us only think of strolling magic for older children and adults, not the day care aged child. I feel this happens because magicians don't think they would understand it nor have the attention span to warrant a performance. The young child should be allowed to enjoy the magic just like the adults. Don't leave them out.   Over the years I have come to realize that while at festivals, fairs or other events, often times there are also young children that want to be entertained. My wife decided, as a preschool performer and teacher that she can also entertain the younger children while I entertain the older children and adults. Why should you include the young child in strolling magic? You never know where it will lead you. It could lead to other gigs such as birthday parties etc, but also lets the parents of those children know, that you have not forgotten them. Also, the client sees you performing for all of their guests which increased your value to them.   Can you perform strolling magic for young children? Some of you might answer no, but I am here to tell you . yes you can. I am here to tell you not to forget them. They enjoy seeing close up, fun magic just as much as the adults. Something to remember.what you used to make children laugh in your larger show can also be used in a strolling magic performance. Basic principles such as see don't see and magician in trouble can be directly applied to close up magic making it exciting for the kids.   Let me give you some examples and tips you can apply to your close up magic. First, keep it simple. Remember, they aren't as interested in the magic as they are the journey you take them on. Keep the magic visual and simple to understand. For example: the most common effect we use in close up magic is cards. However, standard playing cards don't mean anything to a child of this age, it's too complicated, but if you use alphabet or picture cards you instantly make it simple for the children to understand.   Another tip I can suggest to you is what I call getting down to their level (eye to eye). By doing this, it makes you look less scary and also makes the child more comfortable. It also tells the parents you enjoy what you do and are willing to go the extra mile. If you get down on their level, it also makes it easier to do effects in their hands (such as sponge balls) which they absolutely love. If you need to, bring a small stool to sit on to make it more comfortable for you.   So you ask yourself, OK strolling for young children I can do that but, what effects can I perform for them? Pack your regular strolling stuff with you, but also bring along other items such as puppets, coloring book, change bag, or whatever you might have for your children's show and try it. Many of the props you use in your children's stage shows can be bought in a smaller size that works ideal for strolling.   Also, there are a lot of customized magic effects on the market these days that are geared towards this very subject. People such as Barry Michell, Tim Sonefelt and Creative Magic are just a few off the top of my head. They carry effects perfect for this age group that are geared towards strolling events.   You must also not forget that your standard close-up magic can be easily adapted to work for younger children. It really is in the way you present it to them. Professor's Nightmare can be a really fun trick for a young child if you change it up a bit. Remember what makes kids laugh and utilize that in the patter you create.   Some of you might not want to do this type of magic or don't feel comfortable and that is totally fine, but if you are a children's performer, I would recommend you trying this out the next time you are asked to do strolling magic for an event. You never know where it will lead you. I don't think you will be disappointed.   These are the forgotten audience. Don't be afraid to perform for them.   As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. Tony Brook In Conversation With Ariann Black - (Part 5) -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA   TB: Yes we have and indeed we can ...but I'd like to move away from the topic of Magic for a moment .. Outside of Magic, you and I share a deep passion for waffles and ice-cream and also Stocks & shares. You and I have talked about the very real business of share dealing and the "secret thrill " of watching our stock climb share with us some of this side of you as an accomplished businesswoman ..   AB: Yes, just like you I am partial to waffles and ice-cream ..no idea why ..just love to do that after a gig ..the Market ..well, I am passionate about it .it is a very real extension of my business. You know Tony, as you always say, there is the show and there is the business, and the business side is of course important to me.   I have some other business interests, and one of them is Trading stock. I first started Trading & building a Portfolio back in 1996. I believe that as a performer you should take care for your retirement before you retire. So I have a couple different accounts, but I also have some pet stocks that I like to buy sell and trade. The trick is to find stocks that are products you are interested in or believe in. I have 6 different companies I like to dabble in and out of. You just have to know your risk tolerance and not buy more than you are willing to lose.     TB: Well, we gotta take of the Product that is us and make a Dollar a two. Let me take you back to your early days in New York and the events that followed ...   AB: After my graduation in 1987, I accepted a position in a magic shop and moved to New York. After only three months, I was invited to perform with Ward Thomas during his one hour show. This was my first exposure to the trials and tribulations of a one-hour magic show. A real learning curve. I lived in New York for 5 years and worked as a magic consultant for the touring company for "Godspell", the original company for "Forever Plaid", and the Broadway rival of "The Cherry Orchard".   During one of my performances in the Ward Thomas' Show, we were invited to Atlantic City for a revue show at Trump's Castle. Unfortunately, the revue show didn't last that long, but I was hired to stay on at Trump's Castle as the house magician for four years.   End of Part 5   -------------------------------------------- 9. Broken Wand - Fred Collins -------------------------------------------- Message by Jennifer and Mary Ann Collins forwarded on by Hal Meyers   Fred Collins Piscataway, NJ - Fred Collins, 64, known to many as Budd-E the Magician and Key-Ko the Clown, died on Friday, January 21, 2011 at JFK Medical Center in Edison.   Born in Neptune, to his late parents Frederick "Ted" and Beulah (Moyer) Collins, Freddy was raised in Newark and has lived in Piscataway since 1971.   He was honorably discharged from the United States Army Reserves and was the proud owner of Mecca Magic in Bloomfield. He belonged to the International Brotherhood of Magicians and was currently working for UPS in Bound Brook as a Supervisor. Freddy was the original founder of Clown Fest, which is held annually in Seaside Heights and Mecca Magic Clown College.   Freddy is predeceased by his brother Jon Collins.   He leaves behind his wife Mary Ann (Mayo) and their daughter Jennifer Collins and his pride and joy, his grandson, William Magrino III. He also leaves behind his two sisters, Dahne Meeker and Bunnie Collins.   A Memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 30, 2011 from 2-4 PM in the McCriskin-Gustafson Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ 07080 with a religious service beginning at 3:30 PM.   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions sent to the American Cancer Society, 2600 US Highway 1, North Brunswick, NJ 08902 would be appreciated.   ---------- From Hal Meyers .   Fred Collins, my friend .   The funny thing is that I don't think of Fred as a "clown" as so many others do. He was really responsible for keeping Mecca Magic alive, growing it into the biggest magic/make-up/costume/consumer prop shop in the area, as well as being the most influential teacher of the ART of clowning.   There is not one Magician/Clown from the last twenty five years from the Bloomfield/Newark and surrounding area who has not been touched by Fred's influence. And, he was the nicest guy on the planet who treated everyone with kindness and respect, always willing to help and guide those big shoed/pancaked souls, always lending an ear with a "spot on" suggestion to assist the magi with their conjuring dreams.   His own performances were truly magical too no matter what character he portrayed, no matter the venue. Fred was immaculate in appearance and performance and it showed over and over again with repeated bookings throughout his career.   I will always remember his genuine infectious laugh and smile, I can hear it now.   And, he was a very good friend to me and my family all those years.  That's Fred!   Hal Meyers (aka Dameon)   -------------------------------------------- 11. Bruce Chadwick's Tribute To Terry Seabrooke -------------------------------------------- Message by Bruce Chadwick (US)   The audience began to quiet as the surprising roar of hundreds of motorcycles was heard through the theatre sound system. Earlier that day in Milwaukee, a Harley Davidson motorcycle rally had staged a drive through the downtown streets of the city. The theatre sound technician had set up a microphone and recorded some of the incredible roar as those peculiar machines were driven past the theatre.   The house dimmed and the warm glow of the curtain lights increased. I did my best to page over the noise, "Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome to the SAM stage, your master of ceremonies for the evening, the one, the only, Terry Seabrook!" With the audience applauding and already chuckling lightly, the curtain opened and Terry thundered in on his undersized moped and crash helmet.   It is hard for me to believe that Terry is gone. My emotions run wild, a mix of sadness with uplifting memories of his crazy antics and hilarious comedy. It is safe to say that Terry Seabrooke was most influential in my performing career. I remember vividly my early years as a child, going to TAOM conventions, and laughing so hard at Terry that I literally fell out of my seat.   As a child I never fathomed that one day it would be my pleasure to work with Terry, but that became the case over the past 30 years as we worked together for various magic conventions, and in my roles as a stage manager and performer. Terry was equally at home emceeing a show or performing his crazy act. He taught me so much about the importance of winning over an audience, and how to reach across the footlights and establish the type of rapport that only master entertainers can achieve.   His "Aarf" dog bark, and then kicking aside the imaginary animal with his foot was his trademark. I will never forget him coming forward and apologizing to the audience at the Louisville combined IBM/SAM convention, "Sorry I was late. I was attending an animal rights barbecue!"   Equally it is impossible to think about Terry and not see him put his hand to a volunteer's mouth and exclaim, "Have a sugar!" Of course I don't guess I will ever figure out what the imaginary object was that supposedly hung from the overhead theatre rigging. He always seemed to be so concerned to carefully position the volunteers he brought onstage directly below it.   Terry's bits of business were legendary. It was always such a joy to see him work. His "burned note" routine and extinguishing a cigarette into a volunteer's coat were always hilarious. And too as a comedy magician myself, the desire to copy Terry and  "borrow" some of his comedic one-liners has been intense. I am happy to have overcome those temptations however, knowing from experience that any attempts on my part to use the master's material would be vain. Only Terry with is dynamic personality, curious looking smile, strange English composure, and crazy tongue and cheek humor could deliver such comedy, and get away with it.   Case in point, every time I see a Delben Two Hole Wrist Chopper, I think about Terry's line, "In 1584, the French developed the double seat outdoor potty. In 1585, the English borrowed the idea and cut holes in it".   Terry and I had many backstage discussions over the years. I would gladly have paid money for more conversations and opportunities to pick his brain. We had a wonderful talk one day about how hard it was to create comedy. Terry reinforced something I know from experience, that developing a comedy act is like so many other things, something that takes hundreds of performances to become refined. Perfecting a comedy is an arduous task that takes years. It is the task of taking a core idea and then building the various branches on it, honing and whittling away those jokes and bits of business that don't work, and daring to test new ideas that might.   Terry was the first Englishman to always point out how important it was for Americans to celebrate our July 4 Independence Day. Of course he was also careful to point out that the English also celebrate the occasion, but instead call it Thanksgiving.   He was so proud to announce the engagement of the great English actor Peter Cushing to the American actress Whoopi Goldberg. "Of course," he would carefully explain, "you do realize that is going to make her a "whoopee cushion?"   The only time I ever saw Terry crack a tear was when his dear friend Billy McComb passed away. It was only then that I realized that it is OK for even masters of laughter to sometimes cry.   Magic is going to miss the great Seabrooke. He was the comedy magician's magician. At least now I know for sure that laughter is a definite in heaven.   -------------------------------------------- 18. e-zine Archives -------------------------------------------- Back issues of the Magic New Zealand e-zine go to: www.watson.co.nz/fezine.html   When you enter the archive the e-zines are in issue order and are Coded, e.g. 001 Nov06 1999.txt first three numbers (001) denote issue number, then the date (Nov06) and the last figures the year (1999)   -------------------------------------------- 19.
