Celebration Of 100 Years Of Magic At The London Palladium -------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Stone   I am delighted to release details of two exciting projects aimed specifically at Magicians worldwide.   Firstly, on 24th January we are launching Showstealers Vegas Link. This will provide a direct link for performers to Showstealers LLC, established Las Vegas Entertainment Consultants and Show Producers.   Showstealers Las Vegas operation will be headed up by Executive Producer, Paul Stone, who has been producing top quality Entertainment Shows and Events around the world for over 30 years.   Showstealers are on the lookout for new and original performers to appear in our 'Variety Live' and 'World Stars of Magic' Shows, and also at Corporate Events, Tradeshows, and on TV in USA and Europe.   Showstealers will be reintroducing our copyrighted 'Vegas Dream Ticket' promotion every month from April, offering a unique opportunity for magicians to appear in a Las Vegas Show.   Showstealers will also be offering USA Representation for overseas performers (from outside the U.S.).   For full details and to apply to join the select Showstealers performer's roster, email your CV and promotional materials to info@showstealersvegaslink.com In September 2008, I produced the 'Tribute to Siegfried & Roy at the London Palladium' and, as part of that memorable event, we founded MagiCaresT The Magic Charity. Siegfried & Roy and Lynette Chappell became Honorary Trustees.   MagiCaresT has now achieved its official 501 (c) (3) Charitable status and we have set up an office base in Las Vegas. MagiCaresT is different from many other Charities in its philosophy and approach. Its main aim is to identify and offer support to smaller, lesser known Charities and to individuals who need a helping hand.   The MagiCaresT slogan is 'When Magic Cares, Miracles Happen', and we believe that by reaching out to the Worldwide Magic Community we can make a real difference to the lives of people suffering hardship.   We want to further establish the reputation of MagiCaresT as the Magic Charity so we are proud to announce on Monday 19th September THE MAGIC EVENT OF 2011!   Showstealers in association with MagiCaresT presents   'Palladium Magic'   A Night of 100 Magicians   This superb Theatre has recently celebrated its Centenary. Every major Show Business Star has appeared at 'the Home of Variety' over the past 100 years, including the world's greatest magicians.   Produced and Directed by Paul Stone, Palladium MagicT is a celebration of 100 years of Magic at the world famous London Palladium Theatre.   As well as featuring several of today's top International Magic Stars,  (already confirmed are Mac King, Marko Karvo, The Great Tomsoni & Co, and Paul Zenon), 'Palladium MagicT' will also pay tribute to many of the Magic 'Greats' who have played this wonderful Theatre.   Magic legends like Houdini, Cardini, Siegfried & Roy, Channing Pollock, Chung Ling Soo, The Piddingtons, Robert Harbin, Tommy Cooper, Johnny Hart, Paul Daniels, and Silvan, Jay Marshall, Marvin & Carol Roy, Norm Nielsen, The Morettis, and Wayne Dobson.   The Show will also include a special tribute to John Calvert, a remarkable Showman, Movie Star and Magician who will have just celebrated his 100th Birthday! MagiCaresT plans to donate 100 tickets for Palladium MagicT to local Cancer Charities, Hospices, and individuals from the London area.   We Need Your Support!   We have put together a spectacular and one-time only offer which will help US to achieve our goal, and give YOU the opportunity of a lifetime!   This is YOUR chance to join a very exclusive and select group of magicians to perform at the London Palladium.   Due to the success of long running Musicals, it is now virtually impossible for any magician to appear at the London Palladium. To see a true Variety Show at the Palladium nowadays is rare, seeing a large scale Magic Show is even rarer.   So, Palladium MagicT offers YOU probably the ONLY chance you will ever have to perform in this famous Theatre.   Please Read That Sentence Again!   To find out the full details of how YOU could be one of these performers, email producer@palladiummagic.com   Do it NOW, as the closing date for applications is 15th February 2011.   Certain opportunities only come round once in your life   This Is One Of Them! Don't Miss It!   -------------------------------------------- 5. I.B.M. And the beautiful historic Majestic Theatre is just a short walk through the park (literally) from the hotel.   And about those youth activities...For the first time in I.B.M. Convention history, the International Brotherhood of Magicians is assembling some of our most talented junior members to perform in a professionally produced cabaret show at the Dallas 2011 Convention. We're seeking talented performers between the ages of 7 and 17 to star in this show.   The I.B.M. Convention is undergoing a major overhaul, and this show which will showcase our best young magicians will be performed 4 times during the convention as part of our new Fab 4 Events. Performers will be compensated with cash based on their number of performances up to a full complimentary registration. In addition they will be billed as featured talent which will be a great resume builder. They'll also have the bragging rights of being onstage with a world renowned magician. Not to mention the honor of performing for so many of their peers.   If you are an interested young member, or you know of one, and you think this might be for you, we'd love to see your talent.   To hear all about everything first make sure you friend us on Facebook and follow us on Facebook. Let all of your magic friends know! www.facebook.com/ibmconvention www.twitter.com/ibmconvention   And you can register here: https://www.magician.org/portal/ibmconvention_signup   The I.B.M. held the world's first magic convention in 1926. Meetings With Remarkable Magicians # 16 -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US)   Sin City Venture!   A short column from Las Vegas, where winter is over and a glorious spring is holding court! When it is nice weather in Vegas it is especially pleasant to be here. One travel tip to my readers and potential visitors; don't bother checking into a hotel in Vegas, just buy a house-it's cheaper!   When Charles Dickens started his masterpiece 'A Tale of Two Cities' with the words, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times," he could have been talking about the business of putting on a magic show in Las Vegas. Of course, our old boss George W. would have phrased it, "It was the best of times, it was the worser of times."   My point being that Andy Warhol, as usual, hit it smack on the nose as usual when he said, "In the future everyone will be a star for 15 minutes" he wasn't only talking about these never ending 'reality TV shows. What he could have added was  "In the future every magician in the world will have his own magic show in Las Vegas for 5 weeks!   With the city overbuilt, empty hotel rooms (at record low rates) and a highly diminished number of visitors, there is a certain method in the madness of their madness. Almost every small show is four walled. If you are not aware of this process, it is as though the hotel rent you the room and then decide what else to charge you for!   There are various kissing cousins to the '4 wall' process such as three wall deals or even two wall deals. I suspect there is even 'No wall' deals-----but that probably only applies to street performers, who are as worried about the drop in business revenue as everybody else. If you do not fully understand the 'Wall' system trust me and don't open a Vegas show-you will regret it!   There has never been an easier time to talk a hotel into putting on a show. Just don't expect the audience to flock to your door because your snowstorm effect is best! Some hotels are filling their buildings with 5 or 6 more 'smaller' shows. With everyone (from Cirque du Soleil onwards) fighting for the ticket dollar or just to get the seats filled for free.   My 5-year run at the old Maxim Hotel was a strictly salaried affair and with two young kids to feed that was perfect by me. There were also considerable product sales, which made quite a difference financially. Now I fill in a few weeks a year for Mac King and that is all the 'Vegas Fix' I really want or need.   There is a wonderfully detailed listing of Vegas magic shows in Magic New Zealand every month compiled by David Neubauer and I have decided to make use of it and explore some of the shows that have sprung up along the way. I am home in Vegas for a few weeks setting up our new business (Lewin Enterprises Inc.) and during this time I am going to make a solid point of doing a brief review of them for Magic New Zealand.   I perform this service as the ultimate sacrifice to my Magic New Zealand readers, because as anyone who lives in Vegas will tell you, visiting the Strip when you actually live here is not as exciting as it is for visitors. I like to put it this way: Your best friend phones you up and says, "They just discovered Elvis isn't really dead! He is doing one last show on Saturday at the Big Hilton, I got the last two tickets----wanna' go?" You immediately start saying, "Well it's Saturday, traffic will be bad, parking difficult, he will be doing all that '70s stuff----I think I'll pass!"   I am looking forward to catching up with some of the new performers who are braving the perfect storm of difficulties of our current economic market. If you have a show and would like me to visit/promote/review it, then send me an email at nicklewin1@me.com before I begin my quest! I will be delighted to visit.   Anyone else, feel free to give me a digital "Hi," at http://www.nicklewin.com   -------------------------------------------- 8. Tony Brook in Conversation with Ariann Black - (Part 4) -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA   TB: One major name influenced you greatly..Doug Henning. Another performer who influenced you was, a very noteworthy Vegas name.. Peter Reveen.   AB: Yes It was watching Doug Henning on television that made realize I didn't have to look like the stereotypical magician to succeed. I could be myself, and he let me imagine the possibility that I too could be a famous magician I knew even more that this would be my profession for life. As you know Tony, last year Peter Reveen, was honored by the Las Vegas IBM Ring. He was one of the major influences of my life when I saw him live at the Queen Elizabeth Theater. For me everything that I read and envisioned a magic act to be was right there before my eyes, in person and on the biggest stage in town. I knew that I needed to know more than just magic tricks, so I planned each step from that point forward and studied theater, dance, music and drama, anything that was associated with the theater and what it meant to be on stage.   I must also mention Dale Harney who performed on television in Canada, as I watched his shows, I knew there was more to magic than just magic.   TB: How right you are it is something of a cliché but an accurate one nevertheless; by that I mean the trick is just 5% the other 95% is the Performance & Presentation that is where the real Magic lives but the skills have to be honed and the raw talent trained and that is exactly what you did .   AB: Yes. I wanted to do great Magic and achieve my goal and dreams. I attended the College of Manual Dexterity and Prestidigitation, Chavez School of Magic, in Pasadena, California and graduated in 1987. Whilst I was there, I met Doug Henning. For me, this was a dream come true. He was my idol and a giant in the industry. Doug, as we all know, literally changed the face of magic. I wanted to learn even more and be like him. I wanted to achieve his level of success in the industry. He was truly inspirational. I listened to his advice and his suggestions in an effort to improve my talent.   TB: And what wonderful advice it was too you are a good friend and you know how much I love your work you are exceptionally talented.  You have awesome technical skill, your card manipulation is a Master class in Artistry, but the thing I love the most is your stage-craft.  For me you are just one of a small handful of Magicians who really know how to move on a stage your stagecraft is impeccable.   AB: Thank you Tony. You and I have had many conversations about Stagecraft and I know it is one of your passions and yes, you are so right it is not enough to know how to do a trick or even have the technical skill but as you say, it is of the utmost importance for any actor to know at any given point in time where he or she should be on stage.   In Magic this is even more important t is not enough to move on stage or even keep still but it is crucial to know where to move , when to move and how to move and even more importantly, where in relation to the props the performer should be you and I have talked about this for hours and most likely could for several more. Chicagoland Magic Competition -------------------------------------------- Message by Don Wiberg   Announcing the Chicagoland Magic Competition of the Year!   The Magic Masters of Chicago are looking for professional magicians to participate in a magic competition as part of their Annual Banquet on May 13, 2011 at the Lexington House in Hickory Hills, Illinois. This event has been held for over 50 years and attracts anywhere from 400 to 600 guests. This year, we'd like to provide our guests with something different; a Magic Competition with the greatest magic acts in the Chicagoland area and a top prize of $500.00 cash.   Before making further plans, we'd like to know if there's any interest on the part of magicians in the greater Chicagoland area. We announced an earlier deadline but only a few magicians responded so we're extending the deadline until January 24th. If you think you'd like to take part in the competition at the Magic Master's Banquet send an Email to Don Wiberg - magicdon36@comcast.net. Further information will be sent if there's enough interest.   -------------------------------------------- 11. Taylor's Magic Shop - The Rumors Are True! -------------------------------------------- Message by Sean Taylor (Australia)   The rumors are true! The plan has come together! After more than 15 years in Chatswood, Taylor's Magic Shop is on the MOVE to a HUGE and unbelievably exciting new location. In early February, we will be relocating to a bigger, custom designed facility in Castle Hill in Sydney's North West.   A quick potted history. In June 1994, Diana and I began selling magic at the Sydney convention. We quickly established a busy little mail order business working from home under the name Magic Moments. In early 1997, the business moved into a retail location at Chatswood Station and was renamed Taylor's Magic Shop. In the 6 years which followed we became the first Aussie shop:-   * To operate solely on magic products * To sell on the Internet * To host regular lectures * To organize an annual convention * To produce catalogues on DVD * To establish a major export business   After 6 years, Taylor's Magic Shop moved to a big new shop in central Chatswood which allowed for more in-house activities, bigger stock holding and a range of Bigger and Better events.   So after 17 years in Chatswood, Why Move?   The magic business has changed out of sight in the past 5 years; more and more shops are becoming solely internet retailers. In fact, since we began in Sydney, 7 shops have come and gone. The major dealers in the US and UK are now all in off-centre locations and this trend is spreading. This style of operation affords them the opportunity to have much larger premises for a sensible and affordable rent. This is the future of our business and we have to accept that. We want to maintain the ability for you, our customers to visit a magic shop but we also need to expand our horizons beyond the shop front. Moving out of town is the only way for us to effectively do that.   We have fought the trend longer than most, but we recognise that our business has not kept pace with the worldwide trend. Our website has not always been a true reflection of our business either. It is time for us to dramatically improve our web presence and for that we need time. Our home is in the Hills district and with the increased traffic each day, we are effectively wasting between us more than 4 hours driving to and from Chatswood in peak hour. That situation won't improve so it's time to take things into our own hands.   So where exactly will you be?   I'll release the full address details at the end of this week, once It's all signed and sealed. Suffice to say that we will be 10 minutes from the M2, 5 minutes from the M7 and close to the fast buses from town. There is no train station but interstate visitors can be picked up at the closest station which is Pennant Hills. Those of you in the North, South and West will find us much easier to access. If you coming from the East, sure it's a little further, but without the hassles of heading into a major shopping district (or worse still paying $40 to park your car in the city!).   So what can you look forward to from the NEW Taylor's?   1. A bigger and more exciting location with free parking right at the door, a separate lecture theatre and rehearsal/performance space, a beautiful air-conditioned showroom and shop area and the same welcoming, friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The time pressure of parking meters is gone.   2. A dramatic improvement in the look and feel of our website and a bigger online range which is more reflective of our real stock situation. Our 2000+ mail order customers will see the benefits very quickly.   3. Regular lectures, workshops and the quality events you have come to expect from Taylor's.   4. Regular kid's lessons and other activities for young magicians.   5. Improved pricing and service from our mail order operation.   6. Superday will happen as usual in Chatswood, taking advantage of the fabulous facilities offered by the Zenith theatre. I look forward to announcing the guests in February.   7. More regular communication on new products and upcoming events and services.   These next 2 weeks (starting today) will involve us clearing as much stock as possible so you can look forward to a relocation sale email from me following this one. This will list all of the one-off items. Many hundreds of other tricks and DVDs are $5 or $10 and we have a massive amount of 50% off stock. Most of these bargains are only available in store and there are far too many things to list. Please don't call asking for a list over the phone. There is simply too much to describe. Get over here and pick up a bargain.   We'd like to thank you all for your support and regular business in Chatswood these past 17 years and, as part of our ongoing support for you, our customers, we look forward to welcoming you into our new facility. Plans for the opening date are a little sketchy right now and these things always take more time than you'd hope for but you can be sure that the grand opening night will be an event to remember. Penn & Teller: Fool Us On ITV1 -------------------------------------------- Message from Steven Cookson forwarded on by Mike Peck   What's this, a magic based show on ITV that is funny, engaging and interesting? Shame it had to take two Americans to it though.   You wait years for a prime time entertainment type shows based around magic and two come along at once, with BBC One and ITV1 both bashing out their respected efforts. The BBC's The Magicians debuted January 1 and ITV hit back on January 7 with a one-off special Penn & Teller: Fool Us.   So as expected, one turned out to be shoddy and celebrity based while the other was brilliantly executed and pleasantly entertaining. But probably not the way round you expect, as it's ITV who hit the correct note. To be fair the clue is in the title, as the fantastic illusionists Penn & Teller aren't likely to lend their names to a TV show that aims for lowest common denominator idiocy. Jonathan Ross Presents Penn and Teller Show   Whereas magicians had Z-listers cocking up magic acts and Lenny Henry being a tool, Penn & Teller: Fool Us gave professional conjurers the opportunity to show off their skills uninterrupted on national television. Okay, so there was a competition element added - and Jonathan Ross's first big ITV presenting job to boot - but this didn't overpower the acts in any way.   The basis of Fool Us was that Penn & Teller would sit in front of the studio audience and if they couldn't work out how a certain trick was done then the performer would win a trip to Las Vegas and support them at one of their shows. Either way, who cares if they don't (although two of them did) the whole point was to give us, the viewing public, the chance to see some illusions by people we probably haven't seen before.   Magic Competition Show on ITV   So of the two that did manage to stump them, one was a comedy magician who used envelopes with one containing money and the rest with a fake note and no-one guessed the correct one, which Penn was annoyed about not getting the exact method. The other was a card trick where the performer "memorised" the deck and through a series of shuffles threw out the aces with ease. Again, the duo fall short.   If it was about the best, and it wasn't, but there was an amazing close-up magician called Michael who wowed the crowd with his expert sleight of hand. You could see, even though Penn and Teller were concentrating on his hands, they were enjoying the spectacle. They weren't being cynical or making fun of anyone, it was about being impressed and offering advice where possible. Although it's fair to say that in comparison the veterans blew everything away with their two offerings.   There were a couple of downers though, namely with Wossy who sometimes kept interrupting Penn. Not too much but it was a bit annoying. Also, their opening trick with the camera phone was nice but it's a shame we didn't get to see how that was done. Then again they're not going to be completely open with everything, especially when they were so cryptic when giving answers to the hopefuls.   Penn & Teller: Fool Us vs The Magicians   It makes sense for Penn & Teller to be a part of this because they know what they're talking about (except Teller, who doesn't actually speak), they like to have fun with their act and sometimes create tricks with the purpose of revealing the secrets to the audience. Plus it allowed the titular duo the opportunity to do a couple of their own routines for the British public, who might not be too aware of their work (their Bullshit series is particularly good, even if you don't agree with what they have to say it's healthy for sceptics to exist in society).   Here's the final thought: how come the BBC and ITV both hit upon a similar format at exactly the same time yet it's the BBC version that's the more tacky and amateurish? Fool Us is better than The Magicians, not just because the performances were great, it worked because it let people perform their acts how they wanted. It wasn't about who was better, just enjoying being there. A celebration of magic if you will. So, one week into 2011 and the results so far: BBC 0 - ITV 1. Shocking.   Read more at Suite101: Penn & Teller: Fool Us on ITV1 http://www.suite101.com/content/penn--teller-fool-us-on-itv1-a329479#ixzz1BdtpKfl4   -------------------------------------------- 13. The Gathering will be held in Livermore California, USA, Which is in the SFO East Bay area, about an hour EAST of San Francisco.   Our price to attend is still only $75 PER attendee.   The hotel we use has a nice full breakfast, and is about $90 per night.   Our guest of honor this year is Eugene Burger.  We are fortunate that our prior two GoH's have indicated that they are planning to attend as well.  This is an opportunity to hang with Kardor, and his alter Ego and to see the one and only Doug Higley live and in person!   We will again be holding the Iron Magician contest, along with the Plastic magician contest (item to use this time is the cheapo magic wand)   For more information, feel free to contact me directly, or check the  venues section on the website, www.bizarremagick.com   Our space is a bit limited, but I still have room for about another 12 or so to attend.   "We are all of us searching for rational reasons for believing in the absurd" (Lawrence Durrell) kay@Bizarremagick.com   -------------------------------------------- 17. The Magic Circle, London, Christmas Show -------------------------------------------- Message by Christina Nyman President Magica Club Lëtzebuerg/Luxembourg   Every Christmas the Magic Circle in London invites laypeople and magicians alike to a family friendly journey into the land of imagination. Many spectators had bought their tickets already at Easter to not miss out on all the fun.   Master of Ceremonies Noel Britten united the different acts with a string of anecdotes and humorous magical effects which brought peals of laughter from the audience. This man is so much fun, and you can clearly see that he enjoys himself immensely on stage.   The first act was performed by the youngest artist, Stephen Williams (UK). As he is only 16 he should not look good in a tail coat, but he did. Stephen works with colour changing canes, candles and silks in a classic act. When he produces his first dove the lay audience is enchanted. His Christmas finale is a big snowstorm.   The next performer is not a magician - but a gem. Steve Hewlett (UK) has a comedy ventriloquy act to die for. There are moments when it's so cute, that he has to remind the audience that the puppets are not real. There are other hilarious moments when the puppets are flirting shamelessly with the ladies in the front row.   No diamonds shine too bright, no pink feathers are too light for our next performer - Romany, Diva of Magic (UK). Sparkling and glittering she has us all charmed whether she produces birdcages, interacts with the spectators or performs coin miracles.   The first performer after the interval is Dale Salwak (USA). Dale Salwak's act is a veritable course in how classical magic should be performed. And the audience reactions is proof that old school style and charm is still king. A beautiful act!   Closing act with illusions was Martyn James (UK). Mr James is not your regular illusionist with super slick moves. He uses his personality to create a lot of comedy around illusions with cardboard boxes, beer barrels and barbed wire.   All in all a very enjoyable show!   -------------------------------------------- 18. Chicagoland Magic Competition Of The Year! -------------------------------------------- Message by Don Wiberg (US)   Announcing the Chicagoland Magic Competition of the Year! -------------------------------------------- 19. e-zine Archives -------------------------------------------- Back issues of the Magic New Zealand e-zine go to: www.watson.co.nz/fezine.html   When you enter the archive the e-zines are in issue order and are Coded, e.g. 001 Nov06 1999.txt first three numbers (001) denote issue number, then the date (Nov06) and the last figures the year (1999)   -------------------------------------------- 20.
