Magician Franky Houdini Facing 10 Years Jail -------------------------------------------- Message by Wayne Michaels   A prominent magician and children's entertainer is facing more than 10 years in jail when was he sentenced in Ipswich today for sexually abusing four girls aged between six and 15 and videotaping himself having sex with a would-be teenage assistant..   To read the balance of the article go to:   http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/breaking-news/magician-franky-houdini-facing-10-years-jail-for-sxually-abusing-four-girls/story-e6frf7jx-1225961300094   -------------------------------------------- 3. Magic Shop Owner Stabbed -------------------------------------------- Message by Robert Clark (NZ)   On Sunday morning at 10.45, I was getting ready for the Santa Parade using my promotional Car.   When in the Wilson car park next to my magic shop, Tricks, Deborah saw a burglar leaning in the passenger window of our BMW. I ran over and he then ran full speed at me, I knocked him over flat on his face, I got up and then he threatened me with a long screw driver. I fell over and he stabbed me in my right leg. Deborah uncannily had a camera and she took a picture of him front and back.   The police are very confident he will be caught before he actually injures someone. I'm all good now. Cheers Robert   -------------------------------------------- 4. Mammoth Magic Auction -------------------------------------------- Message by Derek Lever (UK)   On Thursday, 17th February, the day before the start of the 2011 Blackpool Convention, there will be a Mammoth Magic Auction at the Winter Gardens. It will run from early afternoon until 10 o'clock at night.   The auctioneers will be Derek Lever and Mike Shepherd who will accept only quality items with a value of at least £20. Each lot will be limited to a maximum of 30 items.   Dealers exhibiting at the Convention will be given the first chance to enter items.   If you plan an early arrival in Blackpool for the Convention this could be your chance to snap up a bargain.   -------------------------------------------- 6. Travel vs. Cost - #191 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com   If you earn any income from magic, then you are a professional. To me it is as plain as that. And any professional needs to understand the importance of why we call it "show business." A show without proper business tactics and understanding will not go very far. Likewise, a business without a good product or service will also falter.   One of the more common problems facing magicians these days is how to figure out how much to charge for traveling to and from any event. The worst case scenario is that you never thought about it until you read this last sentence. If this is the case, you are losing money that can and should be going into your pocket. A successful business is one in which all factors are brought together to form a price that is both fair to the client but also covers your costs of doing business.   So how does one come up with a fair price for a show that is only 10 minutes away versus one that may be 1.5 hours away? How do you figure out pricing that is both fair but also sell it to the prospect without scaring them off? What are methods that work best to be able to figure this out fast and efficiently every time you speak with a prospect?   The very first thing you need to understand is that the phrase "Time is Money" means a LOT to you as a paid entertainer. You are getting paid for a set amount of time you devote to the show. Now keep in mind that the time is not just the amount of time you are at the event. You must also factor in the time it takes to get to and from the event and your set up time. All this time added together forms your base time for that event and you need to be compensated for it.   Time spent at one gig prohibits you from being able to perform at any other event. So in essence, your client is not only paying you for your service, they are essentially paying for a blockage of time on any given day. When you think about it in this format, what I state later on will make more sense to you.   The first thing that is most obvious when it comes to pricing is having a base price for the show package you are offering. This is a base fee for what you are giving to the client and does not include other factors such as travel and gas. One way to think about it would be to ask yourself what the base fee would be if you really did not have to travel far at all. You utilize this base fee as a starting point every time.   You then must figure out just how far you are willing to travel from your home base of operations. Is this 50 miles, 100miles or more/ Only you can determine that. You must also determine at what point you have to have an overnight stay if you did said event. Once I figure out how far I am willing to travel, I create a zone map. This is a very helpful tool that instantly allows me to know how much additional fee I need to add to my base price for any event that comes in.   You can create a zone map in a few different ways. Only YOU will know what works best for you. One method is to use a map and put an x over your home base. Then draw circles for every 20 mile radius outwards you are willing to travel. Each of these 20 mile circles becomes zones for you. Another method is to create zones based on zip codes or counties. No one method is better than the other. The main goal is to create zones that you are familiar with. These zones help you determine additional travel fees.   The zone map really helps make it easy for you to know how far to and from a gig is for you. This factors into the amount of gas you will be using. Gas cost money and you will want to be compensated for it. By knowing your zones, you can instantly know how much additional to add for gas to get to and from that zone.   But make sure that gas is not the only thing you factor into travel cost. As I stated earlier, time is money. The more time you spend out on the road, the less time you have to book another event for that same day.   A great way to think about this is to break down each day into segments. These segments are how many shows could you realistically do on a normal day? Only you can determine that. Maybe it is 2 maybe 3 or maybe even 4 or more. Only you know based on how long it takes for your set up etc. You then can break that day into those segments. If you know you could easily do 3 shows a day if you had them, then your day is segmented into 3. You can then utilize this information quite easily. If a show takes you 1.5 hours to get to and from the event, that may allow you to miss being able to take another show. If this is the case, you will want to factor that loss into your pricing.   So now that you have this system set into place, you can start to use it so you know immediately how much extra you will add to the base fee. Now the most common mistake anyone can make is what I call giving the client a "menu" of prices. This means you state to the client that their event will cost X amount for the show, X amount for gas and x amount for travel fee. The problem with this is that it is 1) confusing and 2) comes off as you really jacking up the price. The best way is to simply add up the extra cost for travel and add that to the base feel this new fee is the only thing you express to the client. The show will cost x dollars. It is easy for you and easy for them and you know that your travel cost is already factored in.   Make sure you have a vehicle that gets good gas mileage, a GPS system that gets you to the event without any delays and create a system (like above) that easily allows you to know your cost at any time. By doing this, you are not only saving yourself a lot of headache; you are creating good business practices.   As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.   -------------------------------------------- 7. Tony Brook In Conversation With Lupe Nielsen - (Part 6) -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA   TB: No. It certainly can't. You had some previous background and experience at this right?   LN. Yes Tony. I think you are referring to my time when I worked for Collector's Workshop in Middleburg, Virginia (1993- 1995), where I learned a lot about prop construction from Nick Ruggiero and the craftsmen at that business. I also worked for various magic shops in the past: Hank Lee's Magic, and Geno Munari's Houdini's Shop in the Fall of 1995, and I also actually started working with Norm since 1995 as well.   TB: Earlier you spoke about changing a light bulb in the Poster Museum. That is a truly Magical and wondrous place. Naturally, you are also very much involved with the Poster side of the business. Share a little of that with us..   LN: By being involved in all aspects of the business, and given the fact that magic posters comprise half of it, it is only natural that I know and learn about them. We buy, sell and trade them. Often, we travel to far places to view or purchase them. Norm and I do love the posters, and there is a story behind each piece we acquire.   TB: Norm told me that he now has done enough traveling and prefers the comfort of his own home and bed. How about you?   LN. Well, I am pretty much the same. Although Norm has retired from performing, I still do perform occasionally. We do travel once in a while, to purchase posters or as dealers in a few magic conventions. We do prefer the comfort of our home, and people now come and visit to view the poster collection. However, the thing I do value about travel is the human interaction between people of other cultures. It subconsciously widens our view of the world, and makes us realize that we, as human beings, are basically the same. Traveling to other countries does increase my sense of American patriotism.   TB: As someone who has done his fair share of travel over the years, I agree completely with your excellent observations. Nowadays, like you and Norm, I travel much less but still find that meeting new people is a good way of understanding the world. Well, Lupe it has come to the time to bid you a fond farewell but I can't finish our conversation without mentioning a Magical Star that I fell in love with when I visited your home and that is your dog Misty.   LN: Yes Tony and she loves you too. I know you love dogs. Norm and I are very fortunate to have such a wonderful dog. I picked her up when I went to visit friends in Virginia seven years ago. She is part of the family.   TB: Lupe, it has been fun. Thank you for taking the time to converse a while. I look forward to meeting up again real soon.   LN: Tony, it has been a pleasure. Look forward to seeing you again.   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hidden in this article are deliberate grammatical & spelling mistakes. Siegfried & Roy: Unique In All The World - Last Chance -------------------------------------------- Message by Diana Zimmerman (US)   www.noesispublishing.com   The much anticipated, long awaited new book about Siegfried & Roy is finally here and the reviews are incredible. The books are now printed and on their way to Los Angles where they will be packed out with all of the extra goodies, then start shipping the second week of December just in time for Christmas. www.noesispublishing.com   But you only have until December 10th to order it at the pre-publication price of $595. On December 11th the price jumps to $695.   Only 500 will ever be sold, and they are going fast, so don't miss this amazing opportunity to own this once-in-a-lifetime piece of history. Collectors and S&R fans alike are snapping them up at the rate of two and three at time.   To call Siegfried & Roy: Unique In All The World a "book," however, is really a misnomer. Exploring each of its 250-plus full-color pages, six gatefold spreads, and multiple mini-booklets, as well as its unique packaging is truly an experience. At 17 lbs, it contains a secret compartment packed full of incredible ephemera, (both reproductions and original pieces) three DVDs and a CD, a reproduction of S&R's favorite poster from the London Palladium Tribute in 2008, plus an actual piece of their Marquee that hung in front of the Mirage on the Las Vegas Strip.   Siegfried & Roy opened their hearts and minds, as well as their complete archives to me, Diana Zimmerman, and Robert Gould, my co-author. Nothing was off limits. No topic too tough. That alone was incredible. But they weren't the only ones. Gary Darwin opened his collection as well. Tony award winning designer, William Ivy Long, provided extraordinary costume sketches, as well as extraordinary insight into the creative process of developing such a complex show as the Mirage.   Steve Wynn and Kenneth Feld opened their hearts with straight-forward discussions about S&R as people, as performers, as men. Wynn speaks candidly about that fateful day in October when their show took its last bow, what happened, and the real magic that has occurred since then. Emmy and Tony award winners, John Napier and Kenny Ortega, shed new insights into why these two giants of live show business are successful, and why others are not; insights that include those of Michael Jackson and other stars.   David Copperfield speaks candidly about the affect Siegfried & Roy had on his life and on live show business. Penn Jillette, as only he can, provides a "no holds barred" comparison of his and S&R's symbiotic, sometimes seemingly adversarial relationship as performers. Among other fascinating discussions, Criss Angel delves into how and why they were able to pave such unprecedented paths, while others cannot. Lance Burton takes us into their world in ways only someone of his stature is able to do, including lessons learned and so much more.   These stars and so many others, in and out of magic, such as Lynette Chappell, Anthony Hopkins, Shirley Bassey, John Thompson, Peter Reveen, Mark Wilson, Marvyn Roy, Larry Ruvo, Max Maven, Nick Lewin, John Fisher, Paul Stone, Eugene Burger, Richard Kaufman, Jeff McBride, Milt Larsen, Darin Romeo, Irene Larsen, Stan Allen, Bob Rossi, and more all share their thoughts and reveal aspects of S&R that most of us have never known.   Siegfried & Roy: Unique In All The World is actually double its original size, due to the number and length of the interviews, as well as the quantity and quality of artwork and artifacts we were given access to. As Robert Gould so eloquently states in the book's forward: "This is a book of voices. Within these pages you will hear from Siegfried & Roy, themselves, and many celebrated artists who have had the honor to work with them over the years, as well as notable friends and colleagues.   Each speaks in their own words about the present, the past, and the future. These are voices of remarkable insight and touching intimacy - profound words of truth and wisdom, faith and belief." Many of the most telling insights come from Siegfried & Roy.   Over two years in the making. Over fifty contributors, designers, and artists. Over $250,000 in the development and production. "Siegfried & Roy: Unique in All the World," like its namesakes, is a book that truly is unique in all the world and in the history of magic.   For all those who have patiently waited for its publication, we say, "Thank you, your wait is finally over".  For those who are yet to order we caution, "Don't miss out Book #1 sold at auction for $3,000 and they are selling fast".  www.noesispublishing.com   -------------------------------------------- 9. Bill Chaudet Is Alive And Well! -------------------------------------------- Message by Kerry Ross   I just got back from northern California, where we held a surprise 89th birthday party for Bill Chaudet.  He asked that I thank all of his well-wishers, and let all of you know that he and Emmy are well.   For those who aren't familiar with Bill: he is a member #8 of the Magic Castle (now an honorary life member), an inductee in the S.A.M. International Hall of Fame, and was Harry Blackstone Senior's chosen successor (Bill later backed off when his friend, Harry Blackstone Jr., decided to continue his father's tradition).   Bill's professional career in magic has spanned sixty years (retiring just a few years ago) and included many television appearances in the 1950's, 60's and 70's. He's also well known for his pioneer work as a magic advisor for both television and motion pictures.   If all goes well, keep an eye out in 2011 for a MAGIC Magazine feature on Bill Chaudet.
