Latest On Charlotte Pendragon Saga -------------------------------------------- Message by John R. Browne III   Martindale-Hubbell 2010 Highest Rating  in Legal Ability & Ethical Standards (AV) Law Offices of John R. Browne III A Professional Corporation   I have just learned, by way of further investigation:    1) That some months ago Charlotte Pendragon offered the Pendragons' art collection, which she possessed, to Jonathan, through Jonathan's lawyer, if Jonathan would help her get the Pendragon illusions out of Trinidad, including the illusions which Charlotte previously "sold" to Chin-Chin and to Chip Romero.  I am not able yet to ascertain what happened with this offer, nor am I able to confirm that such art collection still exists.   2) That Cliff and BJ (Betty) Hopper, a low income couple involved with magic who live or lived in a motor home, and who were friends of the Pendragons, have recently suffered a significant financial setback at the hands of Charlotte. Ms. Hopper assisted Charlotte when she performed at Jeff McBride's Wonderground in Las Vegas earlier this year.  Her husband Cliff assisted Charlotte with props when she opened for Amazing Jonathan in March.    Ms. Hopper reports that she loaned Charlotte her $6,000 disability back pay, and that Charlotte has only repaid her $500 of this amount, leaving a balance due of $5,500.   3)  That Charlotte has left Las Vegas and is presently living with friends in Southern California.  I believe I have now ascertained her whereabouts. I plan to write her a letter soon on behalf of Chin-Chin and Chip Romero, demanding her cooperation in connection with retrieving the Pendragon illusions being stored in Trinidad, including sending the Pendragon art collection to Jonathan (if it still exists) and turning over customs and other papers which could help recover the stored illusions.    Further progress reports will follow when additional information is obtained.    Best personal regards,    Jack Browne    John R. Houdini’s Life, Legend, And Enduring Cultural Influence -------------------------------------------- Message by George Schindler - S.A.M. Public Relations    Houdini:   Art and Magic Opens at the Jewish Museum on October 29th    First Major Art Museum Exhibition  to Explore Life, Career and Lasting Influence of Legendary Magician   New York, NY - Harry Houdini (1874-1926), the renowned magician and escape artist, was one of the 20th century’s most famous performers. His gripping theatrical presentations and heart-stopping outdoor spectacles attracted unprecedented crowds, and his talent for self-promotion and provocation captured headlines on both sides of the Atlantic.   The Jewish Museum (at Fifth Avenue and 92nd Street, NYC) is presenting the first major art museum exhibition to examine Houdini’s life, legend, and enduring cultural influence from October 29, 2010 through March 27, 2011. Through 163 objects, including 26 recent works of art, exhibition visitors will explore the career and legacy of the celebrated entertainer while considering his lasting impact on contemporary art and culture. Houdini served as president of the Society of American Magicians from 1917 until his death in 1926    Works in a variety of media by such artists as Matthew Barney, Jane Hammond, Vik Muniz, and Raymond Pettibon are on view as well as historic photographs; dramatic Art Nouveau-era posters and broadsides; theater ephemera; and archival and silent films illuminating Houdini’s role as a world-famous celebrity who commanded a mass audience in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Magic apparatus – rarely exhibited together – handcuffs, shackles, straitjacket, a milk can and a packing trunk are being showcased in the context of their original presentation.    A recreation of the famous Water Torture Cell (much of the original was destroyed in a fire in 1995), and two of Houdini’s private diaries, never before shown in a public exhibition, are featured. Visitors can learn about his evolution from a fledgling circus performer in the 1890s, to a stage magician at the turn-of-the 20th century, to a daring escape artist in the early 1900s. The exhibition does not reveal the “how-to” secrets of Houdini’s magic performances. Rather, it describes his audacious innovation in endowing common items with the aura of magic.    Following its New York City showing, Houdini: Art and Magic will travel to Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles, CA (April 28 – September 4, 2011); Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco, CA (September 30, 2011 – January 16, 2012); and Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, Madison, WI (February 11 – May 13, 2012).   For more detailed information Contact pressoffice@thejm.org    -------------------------------------------- 6. Coming Up In the November 2010 M-U-M -------------------------------------------- Message by George Schindler - S.A.M. Public Relations    By Michael Close, Editor MUM   Richard Nakata is the “go-to guy” for the Mile High Magicians magic club. As you'll read in the November cover story (by Lindsay Smith), Richard has had a multi-faceted career in the fields of law enforcement, bomb disposal, martial arts, and, of course, magic. Here’s a prediction: As you read the story, there will be several times when you'll think, “Wow.”    Also in the November M-U-M:    Neil Tobin takes us on a tour of Chicago’s Magic History, a wonderful exhibit at the Elmhurst, Illinois, Historical Museum. The exhibit runs through December, so stop by if you are in the area.    Dennis Loomis finishes up his two-part article on the ins and outs of the Upside-down Straitjacket Escape. Dennis has a large amount of experience in this area, including having performed the escape while suspended beneath a helicopter.   Tom Vorjohan and Daniel Herron, the Balloon Guys, present another great, simple balloon model – the Quack Head Hat. This eye-catching model is worth money in the bank to anyone who incorporates balloons in their show.    Ian Kendall’s Basic Training column covers The Unequal Ropes, a very popular routine for the stand-up magician. If you’ve never worked on this type of routine, you’ll find all the info you need to get you started.    In his November Illusions of Grandeur column, David Seebach discusses some illusions that are real challenges for female assistants. Sometimes learning to hide inside these props is a genuine mystery.    Tom Ewing writes about The Great Sorcar (with a beautiful accompanying poster) in the Nielsen Gallery.   Sage Words returns after an absence, with an article from talented magician Denis Behr. The book featured this month is bit different from our usual fare; it’s in German, and it’s currently out of print. My hope is that by showcasing this book, some intrepid publisher will take up the gauntlet and publish an English translation.   The approaching holiday season is all about giving, and this month’s Quick Look Book Nook exemplifies that ideal with an excerpt from Gift Magic: Performances that Leave People with a Souvenir, published by columnist Larry Hass’s Theory and Art of Magic Press. As you’ll read, this is a special book. I contributed a routine that I used for many years during the holiday season, and thanks to Sandy and Susan Marshall, you’ll have all the info you’ll need to add this to your repertoire.    Bill Duncan and the staff of Informed Opinion give you the lowdown (nine pages worth) on the recent products released to the magic marketplace.    Plus more great columns from Norman Beck, Christian Painter, George Schindler, Larry Hass, Aldo Colombini, and Rod Danilewicz.   All this and more is available to members of The Society of American Magicians in the November 2010 M-U-M. Membership information is available at www.magicsam.com.    -------------------------------------------- 7. Remarkable Magic # 5 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US)   A special note from Nick.   In February I will have been writing my column in Magic New Zealand for five years. It seems amazing how the time has flown by and I have been having a blast sharing my thoughts and ideas. Alan Watson seems pretty sure I signed an invisible lifetime contract for my services! If I didn’t then I will now. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to contribute to his powerful communication tool within the magic world.   One thing I have tried to ruthlessly adhere to is to try and not make the column too self-promoting, or a barely concealed sales tool for my own products. Well, today I want to do something I have never done before. I’m going to ask for money. Not for me, but for someone who really needs it and has been a good friend and fine ambassador for magic since I arrived in America 35 years ago.    Although it was not widely publicized, Steve Dacri had to be rushed to the hospital for an emergency operation earlier this year to remove cancerous growths from his colon. His bills amounted to over 200 thousand dollars, and like many others in our profession he did not have health insurance. It was a tremendous blow physically and financially. Steve, in typical Dacri style, didn’t make a big deal about it; he just doubled down and continued performing his special blend of magic.   Two weeks ago Steve was rushed again to the hospital and required another emergency operation as the condition had returned. Aside from the medical expenses, he is now faced with very expensive treatment to stem the problem and prevent further complications. I don't feel totally comfortable revealing this much about Steve’s personal health issues, but this is a situation that could happen to any single one amongst us, at any time. He could sure use a bit of a helping hand.   Already some of the real humanitarians and good guys have helped. Michael and Lori Finney, Jeff and Abbi McBride and David Copperfield immediately reached for their wallets. This didn’t surprise me for a moment as these are the kind of people who automatically do their best for someone who needs a hand. It is one of the reasons I hold them in such high regard.   The IBM, The Dai Vernon Fund and the SAM also stepped up to the plate offering what help they could. That is the tiny drop in the financial bucket we are building on. I would like to ask my readers to consider helping out in this situation. If magic doesn’t look after its own, believe me we professionals performers are amongst the first to get lost in the cracks.   This doesn’t need to be just a contribution, I would strongly suggest you go to Steve’s website HYPERLINK "http://www.stevedacri.com" www.stevedacri.com and look at the superb collection of highly commercial and audience tested material that he has to offer. Make a purchase if you want to help Steve and help yourself as a performer. There are many years of experience being offered there at very reasonable prices.    If you feel you would just like to make a donation, however small or large, I would direct you to Steve’s Papal account which allows you to send a financial contribution using any major credit card or your own Papal account. Steve’s Papal account is:   steve@vegasinsidetips.com   I know that times are tough all over and most of us are hurting financially, however, I have no hesitation in asking our readers to take this opportunity to truly help out one of our own. I wish I had a buck for everyone who has emailed me in the last (nearly) five years and said how much they have enjoyed my columns, often saying that they would have been happy to have paid for various parts of the contents. However, my column, like all of Magic New Zealand is a labor of love and delivered freely to all who want it.    If you have enjoyed my writing, think about making a modest contribution to help out Steve and Jan. The price of a thumb tip or a packet of flash paper would be a great addition to our modest attempt to help a magical friend in need. We frequently talk about the magical fraternity and here is a chance to make it more than just words. I thank you in advance for any assistance. I know that magicians are a generous bunch and appreciate you taking the time to read this column.   Email me at nicklewin1@me.com   -------------------------------------------- 8. Locating The Spark For Creativity - #185 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com   I think the key to being a professional on any level is to realize that ideas for routines can come from a variety of sources. One cannot and should not limit themselves to just books or just DVDs etc. Ideas for magic can come from anywhere if you are willing to open up your mind and look for ideas from sources that may not be common to you and I.   The first mistake many magicians make when developing routines or acts is that we are often times too much of an Inward thinker. This simply means that we look towards magic for magical ideas.   We come up with an idea and we first go to the books or the DVDs or YouTube and start watching everything we can on the effect we are working on or the end result we are after.   We absorb so much of what we are seeing and we dive right in to it. Now this is not to say that these are evil or a wrong way to go about the creative process. it is simply saying that this can often times lead you down the wrong path if you are not careful.   What happens is we become so focused on creating magic from magic sources that what we end up doing is recreating something that has already been done before. Sure it may be a new line of patter or a new move. However, in essence, we cannot help but recreating too much of what we see from the sources.   What I strive to do (learned from my art background) is to start the creative process by learning and leaning towards an outward approach. This simply means I am not going to the magic books or DVDs or even anything magic related to start the creative process.   Instead I start looking away from magic for ideas for routines. I learn to open my eyes and realize that ideas can stem from things around me. Music can spark an idea for an entire act. A piece of art may spark a concept for a new illusion. Anything can spark ideas for routines if we learn to realize that all magic ideas do not have to come from magical sources.   Now this is not to say give up on books or DVDs etc. we need these things so we can build the "tools" of the trade. We need to utilize these tools in creation of magic. However, as any craftsman will tell you, the tools are not the art. The tools help you create the art.   A master craftsman knows just which tools are needed to create the price he or she is after. We do not have to utilize every single one we see to be creative.   It is also important to realize that when you read magic books or watch a magic DVD that you are careful about it. Magicians forget that there is a big difference between being "Influenced" and "Imitating".   Imitation is not creativity. It is the art of copying what you see and what you have read. be influenced by what you read and what you see and allow those ideas to spark new creative thinking. Allow it to influence your thought process and get you thinking in new ways.   However, do NOT allow yourself to fall into the trap of imitation. It is too easy to see a DVD or read an effect in a book and end up doing it exactly as you have seen or read it. You fall victim to it simply because it is easier.   No one ever said creativity was going to be easy. like anything, you get better at it through practice. force yourself to be a creative thinker. You will thank yourself and your audiences will thank you.   As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.   -------------------------------------------- 9. Tony Brook in Conversation with Jay Scott Berry - Part 5  ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA   TB: Somewhere out there is a young up and coming Magician reading about you. Your life in showbiz and on lecture tours have taught you many things. Care to say a few words based on your empirical experiences?   JSB: Sure Tony. Empirical, eh? Well, I’m just a student of the school of hard knocks: The University of Adversity. I’ve been kicked down and pushed around more times that I can count. The secret of my success is just to keep coming back stronger. I’ll sum it up like this:  We'd all love to be able to predict the future. I've learned that the best way to predict the future is to create it yourself.   I think that the secret to success is having the sheer audacity to imagine a goal and the stubborn determination to stick with it, in the face of all obstacles. Don't wait around for someone to discover you. Be bold. Go out, grab the world by the horns and hang on. Have the courage to dream big.   There is no such thing as false hope. One of the greatest things you will experience in life is the sense of true accomplishment; but you won't get it unless you actually accomplish something. It won't be easy, nothing worth achieving ever is.   Nobody gets a free ride. With that in mind, let any adversity you face simply fuel your enthusiasm and determination.    Don't waste any time viewing others as competitors. You are your only competition.    Don't follow anyone. True Art is only achieved through unique individuality.    You only fail if you give up so don't.    TB: Yes indeed. Great words to live by.  I’ve quoted your Grandfather’s favorite phrase before and I’m sure will do so again several times. He was absolutely right when he taught, “As you go through life, many will tell you that they know the way, but only you know the way".   As you and I have said many times, it is the courage to dream big and then getting out there and doing everything to make it happen is the real secret. Thank you Jay. It has, as always, been a delight spending time with you.    JSB: Thanks Tony. You are very welcome. Always fun chatting with you.    (Hidden in this article are deliberate grammatical & spelling mistakes. Eastbourne Convention Was Very Poor -------------------------------------------- Message by Peter J. Levins   I have missed a few conventions due to heart surgery and many other medical complications, but recently I have had from a very reliable source, a report saying, that the Eastbourne convention was very poor, there was nothing good to report about it, apparently the gala show was the worst ever and the only positive comment was about a juggler, I did not get his name, the dealers did not come off too brightly either, nothing exciting to report about them, nothing new.   The above report is not very pleasant to hear but it is fact, the standard of magic is going downhill all the time and some drastic steps need to be taken to help improve it.   Another comment about the convention was, the average age of the visitors to the convention was about 70. It seems that there are no young magicians attending conventions, I wonder why?   I remain   Magically Yours   Peter J. Levins   -------------------------------------------- 11. The Innovention In Las Vegas ------------------------------------------ Message by Paul Stone   I would like to start by thanking all the incredible performers and lecturers who appeared at The Innovention in Las Vegas. In one 24 hour period we were treated to a fantastic session with Criss Angel, an outstanding lecture from Teller, and an appearance by Siegfried & Roy to launch their amazing new book 'Siegfried & Roy - Unique in all the World'. There were great lectures by Shep Hyken, Seth Kramer, Joanie Spina, Richard McDougall, Gaetan Bloom, & Magic Al, and additional 'free' Workshops with Gene Anderson & Paul Stone on 'Nemo Jumbo Rising Cards', and Brian Egerton on Website Optimization.   The Opening Night extra 'Comedy on Rye' session hosted by Alan Bursky featured Amazing Jonathon, Mac King, Johnny Thompson and special surprise guest Tom Mullica, (who was given a moving standing ovation by everyone present).    The Johnny Thompson Hour was superb with Johnny & Pam in rare form ably assisted by Tom Mullica. Great stage performances by Kevin James, Mark Raffles (making his USA and Las Vegas debut at 92 years old!), Mel Mellers, Sonny Fontana, Jason Andrews, Arron Sparks and Nathalie Enterline.   Graham P.Jolley's One Man Show was a whirlwind of comedy and mindreading. Close-up was in the capable hands of the inimitable Lennart Green, Bob Kohler, Eric Jones and Mark Mason.    To everyone who supported The Innovention from as far away as Australia, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland and of course across the USA, thank you so much for being there. For those that didn't make it, you missed a very unique one-off event. Special thanks to my old friend Nick Lewin, who with his wife Susan, drove through the night to be there just for one day squeezed in between working two cruises. Thanks Nick!!   The beautiful Showroom at the Suncoast Hotel proved to be the ideal venue for the lectures and shows and, as promised, everyone had good seats for all the events. Most importantly, there were many opportunities for all the attendees to meet and be photographed with all the celebrities including Criss Angel, Teller, and Siegfried & Roy, and to hang out with old and new friends.    Johnny Thompson also did a special Workshop on his signature knockout Close-up and Tradeshow effect 'Nemo 1500', explaining his own method and handling for the first time ever. We specially produced 100 sets of this wonderful trick, the wallets made in the highest quality leather. Sales were brisk but we do have a few sets left and they are selling at the one time only Innovention rate of $125 plus postage ( instead of $175 ).   We also produced 100 Deluxe sets of Alan Shaxon's brilliant Cabaret effect 'Confabulation' including the exclusive Confabulation DVD showing Alan performing and explaining his handling, at an Innovention special price of $125 plus postage   (instead of $200), and we have a few of these available too until they run out. Both these offers are genuinely unrepeatable. If you already possess either of these effects, buy a spare at these prices! I am currently working on an exciting and unique magic event that will be taking place in London in September or October 2011. Full details will be announced soon, and I promise that you won't want to miss this piece of magical history.   -------------------------------------------- 12. Magic Props For Sale In A Giant Auction -------------------------------------------- Message by Chris McMillan (Australia)    I'll be retiring from full time performing soon, and as such, will be offering my magic props for sale in a giant auction to be held on Monday 8th November at 7.30 pm in Melbourne, Australia.    I've been told there are some rare items involved. The categories are; Books, Close Up, Stage/Parlour, Money Makers, Children's, Lecture Notes/Booklets and Audio Tuition.    To give a better idea of what's in the auction, I've spent some time compiling a list of the effects and placing links for the various items to; a) give the bidder an improved idea of the effect being sold, b) it's approx. cost new, and c) if unsuccessful with their bid, at least give a starting point to where the item is available. In some cases, the items are no longer available or cannot be found on the web, and here I've added a few videos of the items in question which can be viewed via YouTube links.    If any readers are interested in bidding for the items, please email me, Chris McMillan at: mcmillan@satlink.com.au   with their name, Lot number, and the maximum bid they would like to offer.   The cut off time for these email bids is 8pm (Melbourne time), Sunday 7th November 2010.   The bids will remain undisclosed, and passed to the Auctioneer, Graham Etherington. Postage, if required, will be the expense of the buyer.   The complete list of over 100 lots and additional information can be found by clicking on the link below:   http://www.mrtricks.com.au/events/Chris.htm    -------------------------------------------- 14. Major Magic Event for Adelaide Fringe 2011 -------------------------------------------- Message by Bruce Glen (Australia)   I am delighted to announce that I have been retained by the magnificent Ayers House Museum to present a Bespoke Magic show for the Adelaide Fringe 2011.   Ayers House Museum will become The House of Wonder & Delights for the duration of the festival (the largest arts festival in the southern hemisphere).   I have written a special show that features extraordinary magic - together with “tall tales and true” - woven around the history of Ayers House and inspired by the charm and wonder of some of our greatest storytellers.   Ayers House Museum - in Adelaide’s city centre - is a stately19th century mansion that was once the home of the former Premier of South Australia, Sir Henry Ayers.   During the Victorian Era, performers were often summoned to entertain the landed gentry in the parlours of their grand residences.    The intimacy and old world charm of these shows has been recreated for the Adelaide Fringe in a unique combination of theatre, magic and storytelling.   Lost manuscripts from Wonderland; the hidden power of our minds revealed; Houdini’s feats recreated; Adelaide’s legendary con-man exposed; enchanted finger rings; the impossible rendered possible … all through the art of magic.   The Adelaide Fringe runs 8 February – 13 March 2011 (over one million people attended last year).    Bruce Glen M.M.C. Doc Ralph Marcom's Death In Texas -------------------------------------------- Message by Walter Blaney (US)   So sad to learn of Ralph Marcom's recent death. I remember It was a happy day years ago when Ralph Marcom walked into Douglas Magicland at 409. N. Ervay in Dallas and bought a few tricks from the cute blond divorcee behind the counter, Gloria Palmer. Ralph kept coming back for more magic till Gloria finally said yes to the magic question, "To heck with the magic, Gloria, will you marry me?"   Then what a long and happy life together. When I'd come into Dallas to do a banquet show they often came to see me, along with Gloria Jerome, and the four of us would have hamburgers afterwards at Dennys and laugh like crazy till the wee hours in the morning. Later the Marcoms had great annual Halloween night parties at their haunted mansion in Honeygrove, Texas.   What fun they both were. What real, genuine magic characters they both were. You hate to lose good friends like this, but they are together again, and that I am sure must make them both happy. Aloha Ralph and Glo. You both made a difference in our lives.   Cheers, Walter   Walter Blaney walter@walterblaney.com -------------------------------------------- 16. 30 Years Of Programmes From Daniels To Derren  -------------------------------------------- Message by Ian Keable (UK)   MAGIC SHOWS  30 Years of Programmes from Daniels to Derren Ian Keable has spent the past thirty years watching a wide variety of magicians performing in the UK, ranging from the superstars of magic through to many lesser known names. From his notes – and going back to many of the magicians themselves – he has produced a comprehensive listing of the tricks they did in each show. Furthermore each of the programmes is illustrated in full-colour with ephemera relating to the specific performance, whether it is posters, flyers, souvenir programmes, newspaper reviews or photographs.   Some of the more significant shows include Paul Daniels eighteen month run in London’s West End from 1980 to 1982, David Copperfield’s only appearances in the UK in 1994 and 1995, Ricky Jay and his 52 Assistants in 1999 and Derren Brown’s sensational first show in 2004. Also included are the programmes of another forty magicians, amongst them being Wayne Dobson, Geoffrey Durham, Guy Hollingworth, Max Maven and Simon Drake.   All of the shows seen, with the exception of a couple, were performed for the paying general public: so, as far as the commercial choice of tricks is concerned, you are getting the real deal. None of the performers were trying to fool, or entertain, other magicians. And Ian was present at all of them, complete with his notebook – so this is a true record of what went on in each show.   This book can be looked at on many levels:   To provide inspiration for your own performing;   As a fascinating insight into how magic has changed over three decades;   Your own personal souvenir programme for shows you might have seen, and others you wished you had seen;    A historical record of some truly influential and ground-breaking shows.   A similar book to Magic Shows hasn’t appeared since Spotlight on 101 Great Magic Acts by Tony Taylor, which listed magicians performing in Canada from 1929 to 1963. Prior to that you have to go back to Programmes of Famous Magicians by Max Holden and Programmes of Magicians by JF Burrows. All three of these books have been extensively used by many amateurs and professionals looking for ideas for their own shows; and it is surprising that it’s only now that a similar type of book has appeared.    Magic Shows, however, scores on its predecessors in a number of areas: the inclusion of extensive full colour illustrations throughout the book; the listing of the shows in chronological order, which enables the reader to see the development of certain individual magicians, as well as an overall trend of how the performance of magic for the lay public has changed over thirty years; and introductory notes by the author covering relevant facts about the show and the performers (some of whom might be unknown to many readers).   Magic Shows is limited to 500 copies: it is in hard back, octavo size, 192 pages, over 130 illustrations, full colour throughout.    The cost of Magic Shows is a bargain price of £20 (+ p & p).
