Doug Henning Is A Star! -------------------------------------------- Message by Julie Eng (Canada) This weekend, Doug Henning will be inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame. David Ben has been working behind the scenes and posted his thoughts about the experience here: http://bit.ly/9mXJQl Doug Henning single-handedly resurrected the "magic" of the performing arts, entertaining more people than any other magician in history. His career began in Toronto when he and former classmate, Ivan Reitman staged the box office sensation Spellbound in 1973. The production became The Magic Show, which ran for nearly five years on Broadway, and featured Henning performing classic illusions in a contemporary style that would transform the magic world forever. Henning had eight NBC specials and three shows on Broadway including Merlin, which was nominated for five Tony Awards. Henning was also the first magician to headline his own show in Las Vegas and he performed regularly at Caesar's Palace and the MGM Grand. Sadly, Doug Henning died on February 17, 2000, at the premature age 52. Doug's star will be unveiled on Saturday Oct 16 and the broadcast of the ceremony and celebrations will take place on Oct 20th on Canada's CTV. Doug Henning Is Inducted Into Canada's Walk Of Fame -------------------------------------------- Message by Clive Court (Canada) October 16 is a very important day for magicians across Canada. Why? because a Canadian magician is being given some official public recognition for his career as an entertainer. And in Canadian culture that is an amazing breakthrough. The blunt fact is that when it comes to arts, entertainment and sport, we are pretty miserly with our national recognition of those who work hard to represent us in certain fields of endeavor. Even the British acknowledged the work of Tommy Cooper with a stamp and a statue. The Americans issued a stamp to give Houdini some official recognition. There are other examples around the world. So when the late Doug Henning is inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame on Friday, October 16. We should all give a collective cheer across the country. As the current emcees say "Make some noise!" That is only part of it. Knowing the poor track record of the Canadian media for acknowledging the success of Canadian athletes in almost any sport but hockey and their preference to ignore not only magicians but almost all visual or non-musical entertainers, I can predict that they will prefer to ignore Doug's achievements and focus most of their coverage on the living inductees which is understandable---and a very good excuse. So it is up to us to tell Doug's story for him. If you have an anecdote or personal story about Doug, please call or email (that's easy enough) your local media outlets. I know that Doug inspired many of you with his success---so you owe him this small favour. It's not too much to ask. Just make sure that the phrase "Doug Henning to be inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame. October 16" is in your headline otherwise it may not get any attention. The date is critically important so they can arrange the interview/schedule the story. Ideally, do it during the first ten days of October. Last year about this time, I donated a copy of Doug's newly-published biography to Canada's Walk of Fame with the dedication "...in memory of one of Canada's great entertainers." Without making any pitch that Doug should be on Canada's Walk of Fame, I simply presented the copy to the CEO for their library. He thanked me and promised to read it. I did point out that both the author (John Harrison) and the publisher were American...giving recognition to a Canadian entertainer. I also donated copies, with the same dedication, to the editorial libraries of The Canadian Press (the national newswire), the Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, and CBC-TV and Radio in Toronto (English Network offices). So they have the book and details in their libraries--and no excuse not to produce a story). However, we still need to light a fire under them during the next few weeks. So come on, let's make some kind of collective effort---right across Canada. It is a great opportunity...please do not miss it. Get going! Call your local paper, radio or TV station! Now! Do it for Doug. -------------------------------------------- 4. August Issue Of The Linking Ring Magazine -------------------------------------------- Message by Paul A. Important - Magic Scam! -------------------------------------------- Message by Kerry Ross Actor - Comedian - Magician In my 35 years in the biz, I've never seen a scam like this aimed toward Magicians. Yesterday, I received this email: ***************************** Good day, My name is James Andrew, I am preparing for my wedding which will come up on the 23rd of October 2010. As I was searching for the best magician to make the day a memorable day for me and my wife. I saw your advert and I am really impressed about your performance. and you are going to start by 12:00pm and end 1:00pm, How much will you collect if you are to entertain my guess with the travel expenses....I am having 50 guest. Hope to read back from you. Thanks ****************************** Alan, under the (original) assumption that it was directed solely to me (possibly since I'm currently listed as upcoming on the Magic Castle's website), I followed up with an email correspondence. I have since learned that it was sent to some other Magicians in the U.S. (not sure about other countries). As you will see by his response (below), it is a scam! ******************************* Good to hear back from you....Well I am okay with anything you do on that day to make it a memorable day for my guests....I will instruct my PA to issue out a cheque for your service and you are going to help me with something because my PA cannot issued two cheque, I will instruct him to issue you a cheque of 4,000 pounds and after deducting your money you will help me wire the remaining amount to a videographer that will cover all the wedding day. Let me have your full name and address where the cheque will be send to. ****************************** I immediately cut off any communications, and I hope that others did as well. -------------------------------------------- 6. Remarkable Magic # 4 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) 'Unique in all the World.' Diana Zimmerman has done something that really needed to be done in the magic world. She has edited/written the ultimate book on the World's greatest phenomenon Siegfried & Roy. With tacky 'tell all' books appearing on the scene, telling what nobody needed to know, Diana has created a one of a kind tribute to the legendary team. Siegfried & Roy: Unique in All the World promises to be one of the most collectable books to ever hit the magic scene. You can now pre-order from the publisher from the signed and numbered limited first edition. It will define a new standard for content, quality, and production for collectable editions within the magic field as evidenced by the pre-publication sale at auction in London of Book #1 for $3,000. This isn't your ordinary book, Siegfried & Roy: Unique in All the World will immerse the reader in their extraordinary spirit and magical world like never before. It is brim full with unique items and facsimile from the private collection of Siegfried & Roy and other items from magic's greatest collectors. This is a book treasure in its meticulous attention to detail, I suspect the big decision in years to come will be whether you can bare to part with it when the price of copies soar. Rare historical show posters and tickets, personal Christmas cards, tour marketing materials and merchandise, costume and set designs, photographs, handwritten letters and notes, actual swatches from costumes and stage materials and much more will be faithfully reproduced or included. Many of these items are designed to be removable for the reader's examination and pleasure. The book has contributions from some of magic and show business' most illustrious names in order to examine in prismatic style in order to explore every aspect of magic's greatest duo. It is filled with incalculable personal insights and perspectives into the life and career of Siegfried & Roy. I contributed a short essay (of which I am inordinately proud) and describe the impact of seeing Siegfried and Roy for the first time. The special pre-order price of this collector's limited edition is $595, which is a hundred dollar discount on the publication cost. Part of the proceeds from sales will benefit the SARMOTI Foundation and MagicCaresT. In my humble opinion (OK, I'm not really that humble!) this is truly an investment as collectors from many non-magical sources will be anxious to own this hunk of Las Vegas history. Thank you Diana for producing such a realistically flamboyant and 'over the top' tribute to the two men returned magic into a full-scale production masterpiece instead of just a filler between set pieces. Diana worked with Robert Gould and Paul Stone in achieving this landmark publication. It was something that needed doing and you succeeded spectacularly. For many of us living in Las Vegas it was the end of a very special era in our cities history. In many ways it was the start of the downfall of magic in the neon city. To this day several acts make a good living in Vegas with shows that feature the words TIGERS or WHITE TIGERS in lettering larger than the performers names. Take this opportunity to grab a piece of history and make an investment in this unique labor of love. The book is published by Noesis Publishing and a visit to their website will tell you all the details in an 18 page, illustrated PDF file. www.noesispublishing.com Email me at nicklewin1@me.com -------------------------------------------- 7. Teaching Magic to Students - #184 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Teaching students magic is something I have a passion for. I always believe we must give back to the future stars of magic. If we can set them along the right path, then that is something all magicians should strive to do. I first suggest getting the student the Mark Wilson Course in Magic. It has so much great information in it and you can do lesson plans really easily. It covers from close up to stage or even illusions that you can build with your student at little to no cost. The Tarbell course books are also very good material from which to work from. Of course there are many others. Just keep in mind that as you go over tricks and effects, it is also very important that you also cover off on showmanship, character, keeping the secret, the art of performance and just how to entertain with magic as opposed to fooling people. Learning and teaching how to conduct yourself as a magician is just as important as teaching the effects themselves. I find what tends to happen is a beginner gets locked on the prop so much that they forget the focus should be on them and the entertainment value they can give to an audience. This also needs to be taught just as much as learning the rope trick or the card effect. Take time to break things down easily into simple terms. Here is often how I will work with a student to get them to understand and learn a new effect/routine: - Show the effect and routine as I would have performed it. This allows the student to get a feel for the trick they are going to learn and to get them excited about it. I do this because often students will say, "oh that is not a good trick, they will figure it out, too easy. etc." By showing the trick as a routine first, you can always remind the student of their reactions and how they felt before they discovered the secret behind it. - I then break down the effect and talk about how to do the trick. In this step I am not worried about routining or patter. I simply want to make sure the student can do the effect only. By doing it this way they are not overloaded with trying to recall too much. They simply are to learn the effect. - I then will have them work on set up. this means I will place the props etc. in random order and have the student take it all and set up the trick the correct way. It is important for any student to know how to do proper set up. Most of the nerves from students come from them being worried that they have things the way they need to be. This helps them to get comfortable with it. - I then will start to go over routining of the trick. However, I only do this after I am sure the student has the effect down and can master the set up without any of my help at all. It is important that they do not have to think about how to do the effect before starting to work on patter and routining. - When we work on patter and routining, I make sure the student knows they are NOT to do as I did. They are to simply find out what works best for THEM. I encourage them to find their own style and their own ways to do patter. I help push them along in the right direction. However, the teacher must try their best not to influence the student by having them do the effect the way the teacher would do it. Learn to take a step back and allow the student to discover their own personality and encourage it along the way. - Once a basic patter or routine is thought out, I will have the student place the props down and do the routine/patter with pantomime. they are not to touch the props at all. I do this to get the student knowing the props are not the most important element in any performance. It also allows them to focus on finding out who they are. It also draws attention to how important the entertainment value is to any routine. - I then have them combine both patter and routine with the props and effect and run through it. This gets them the chance to put all the pieces of the puzzle together. - I finally do what I call a cold call. This is simply meaning that I have them set up the effect and perform the routine once and once only. we then move onto something else and go back to it the next day and do it once only again. The reason is to get them in the habit of knowing that they have 1 time to do the routine right. You do not get 3 tries in any show. - We then talk about outs and how we can place in outs in the show in the event something should go wrong. I remind the student that often times the only way an audience knows if something goes wrong is if you tell them it did. This process works really well and helps the student to learn the importance of how magic should be performed and also does not overwhelm them in the process. Along the way I am always encouraging the student and empowering them through the process of them getting things right. I encourage them to find their own voice and I get to enjoy the magic that takes place within them. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. -------------------------------------------- 8. Tony Brook In Conversation With Jay Scott Berry - Part 4 ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA TB: Wow! Congratulations. You are a World Class Magician. You sing and compose music. You play the guitar. You are a species of 21st Century Troubadour. As a result of this new CD, you are just as well known in country/folk music circles as you are in Magic. The last time you called me up to chin-wag on the phone you told me about the gig in Branson. Share a bit of that with us. JSB: Well, as I mentioned before, it's about setting ever higher personal goals. However, there's something more: Joseph Campbell coined the phrase, "Follow your bliss". If you find in your heart that which you really desire to do, do it. I don't want to be drawing my last breath, thinking, "I should have", or "if I had only." Today is the moment, now is our story. As part of this pursuit, I lined up a number of national and international music festivals and concerts. The most recent, as I mentioned, were some shows at the Americana Theater in Branson. Talk about a rush! The response was tremendous. We taped the shows, so I'll have that up on Youtube soon. In addition to the live shows, while there, I was very fortunate to team up with the legendary Charlie Chalmers to produce my new album, due out in November 2010. He has worked with a veritable who's who in the music business over the past 50 years and has 7 songs in the Grammy Hall of fame. Please see www.JSBmusic.com for more info. TB: What a wonderful phrase & philosophy. "Today is the moment, now is our story." I could not agree more. Moving away from Music and magic for a brief moment, no conversation between us will be complete without touching on our joint passion for the esoteric. You once told me that it was your Grandfather who was a major influence in your thinking and philosophical views. Is there is a stage in Magic evolution that leads someone to these paths or is it that we are already on the path and our Magic performances are mere manifestations?? ..share some of your thoughts with us... JSB: Yes Tony, like Channing Pollock and many other magicians before us, we share a love for, shall we say, the deeper magic. It was my Grandfather who set me on the path of a mystic when I was a young child, stating that he didn't want me to "unlearn 50 years of garbage" like he had to. He used to discuss many esoteric subjects, like Edgar Cayce, Rudolf Steiner, Paramahansa Yogananda, The Akashic Records and astral projection, just to name a few. However, I think that the most profound thing he drilled into me was this: "As you go through life, many will tell you that they know the way, but only you know the way". TB: Yes. I love that saying of his. You mentioned it to me a while back and it impressed me deeply. What's the schedule for the rest of 2010 and for 2011. Is there any space left for Magic Clubs to book you for a lecture in 2011? JSB: Well, as I mentioned, I'm on tour now in the US. From here, I'll head to Mexico City and then on to Malaysia and Indonesia before heading home in early November. I'm booked quite solid in Australia through early March 2011 doing music concerts and festivals, both as performer and producer. From March through July next year, I'll be touring across Europe, the UK and Ireland, performing magic and music. I'm set as the headline act for 5 or 6 conventions during that time. We are also looking at dates in late February and early March to produce a Magic Festival in Kuala Lumpur and Iran. As for whether clubs can book me, all I can say is please contact me and I'll do my best to fit you in. I'll be back in the US next September through November, so I'm booking those dates now. MarcoM ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA Dr. Ralph A. MarcoM has left the building. Bill Palmer of Houston, Texas who was a close friend wrote, "Ralph A. MarcoM has left the building. AKA MarcoM the Mountebank passed away this morning at the hospital in Paris, Texas. He was in the same room that Gloria was in when she passed away. He made it to the 13th. He would have liked that." I was very saddened when I received the news. My sincere condolences to all of us who knew him and were touched by his genius. A very sad day indeed. However, The Learned Doctor must be grinning that wonderful mischievous smile of his that it was October 13th and the same room. Now that's what I call a great finish. So very like dear Ralph. Truly one of the greats. I am so indebted to him for so many things. It was a rare honor and a great privilege to have known him and to have spent many wonderful hours in his gracious company. RIP friend, Mentor and Genius. Respectfully Tony Brook -------------------------------------------- 11. Launch Of Ross Bertram Exhibition -------------------------------------------- Message by Julie Eng Launch of Ross Bertram Exhibition by Magicana Magicana is pleased to announce the release of our latest online exhibition dedicated to master magician, Ross Bertram: http://www.magicana.com/rossbertam. Curator, David Ben (Magicana's artistic director) has created a rich and insightful exhibition about his magic mentor, revealing a treasure trove of ephemera, history and archival material. The site features colourful anecdotes highlighting Ross' early years and magical influences. The exhibition also shares a personal insight on Ross' life alongside the challenges and triumphs he faced as a young magician. A rare treat: thanks to Dr. Gene Matsuura, we have also included a rare audio recording by Ross Bertram which captures Dai Vernon visiting the Bertram home most likely in the late 1940s. The reel-to-reel recording reveals Vernon sharing "Slow Motion Aces" for the group - and judging from the reaction on the recording, a trick the group has never seen before. (This legendary piece would be published in 1950 in "Stars of Magic".) Also in the recording, the group discusses a young magician on the rise - none other than the great Jay Marshall. In addition to the marvelous audio magic, the exhibition also houses a video archive featuring Ross performing a brilliant and unique version of the Cups & Balls (with the most clever explanation on how the balls vanish and reappear); and, Ross' legendary and elegant card work. The audio and video archives are worth the visit alone! So, we invite you to visit the past and explore our exhibition on one of magic's luminaries, Ross Bertram. It was The Maskelyne. This takes the form of a sculpted head of John Neville Maskelyne, the founding father of a magical dynasty who presented magic in London for an amazing 60 years. Previous recipients of this award have been such magical luminaries as David Nixon, Paul Daniels, David Berglas, Wayne Dobson, Ali Bongo and Billy McComb.
