Allakazam 50th Program Help Request From Greg Wilson -------------------------------------------- Article sent by Greg Wilson (US) Hi, it's Greg, I'm writing to all my friends to help, because once again, I have taken on more that I can handle. But it is for a good cause. I'm trying very very hard to make this coming Allakazam Week celebration at the Magic Castle an incredible event and show my parents that they have Millions of friends and fans. I have spent months with my all volunteer team to organize Mark and Nani's warehouse and office. That is a monumental task. for those of you that have seen it, you know! But never mind the dust. it has been a joy to discover so many wonderful memories, and hear Mom and Dad talk about them. So, a big part of my push this year is to celebrate this 50th Anniversary of Allakazam. The Castle has been very supportive in many ways, but as we all know, their budget is quite limited. And they certainly can't pay for this kind of restoration work. So I am turning to everyone that loves my Mom and Dad. I have personally invested tons of time and money, as have my parents and my brother. Many others have donated their time and services as well. But I have hit a bump, honestly. I have an incredible little book with really cool, never before seen stuff ready to go to press. We have just a few days left this week (by Friday) to finish getting everything together for printing. I have TONS of photos, stories, and information to share in this Commemorative Program, but I need the support of the rest of Mark and Nani's fans to help cover the costs of printing. That is the one thing I could not get sponsored yet. To make it easy, we created a website, and anyone that wants to help by pitching in $20 bucks, can have their name listed as a supporter in the Program, and for only $35, you can also add a message! In return for your kindness, Mom and Dad will send you an original "Magic Club" membership card from Allakazam. They are really cool. BUT THERE ARE ONLY A FEW DAYS LEFT and we are far from our goal. So, if the names Mark Wilson and Nani Darnell mean something to you, now is your chance to say "thank you" to them, and help us with this important preservation of their history. Please go to the fan site immediately: www.MagicLandOfAllakazam.com and click on the large color Program image on the home page. It will take you straight to the contribution page. Thank you SO MUCH for your help! Also, can you please help me spread the word, and forward this email to your contacts, because I have a very small list of addresses in my email system. And I know there are TONS of Mark and Nani fans out there. Best Allaka-Wishes, Greg Wilson -------------------------------------------- 5. October Issue Of Genii Magazine -------------------------------------------- Message by Richard Kaufman - Editor Genii Magazine October is coming soon, the summer is finally a memory, and the next issue of Genii is almost in your mailbox. The man on this month's cover is actually wearing his Halloween finery-in David Acer's case, that means a tuxedo! This month you'll have the pleasure of joining David Regal as he interviews this Man from Montreal. Doubting Dave himself tells you a bit about his show Mystery Hunters which is now being syndicated in the U.S., then Mr. Acer gets his due with a "Magicana" of his own featuring five excellent tricks. I've never been more pleased with the group of columnists in Genii than I am now: what a sterling line-up! Tony Giorgio returns with more colorful language from the fringes of society, and I'm honored to be a "george ghee" with a "double george" magazine; Max Maven doesn't toss any "baloneys" when bringing us some "george" mentalism; David Britland can be trusted never to "lay a note on us" while delivering a "big sting"; Jon Racherbaumer, avoiding the intellectual "fuzz," delivers a Slant devoid of "tom" news; Jim Steinmeyer doesn't "toss any broads," but does escape from Mrs. Houdini; there's certainly no "tom" material from Tom Stone, who is the best "patch" in the business; and Paul Osborne's Halloween illusion is a reverse "whiz mob." If this has all been Greek to you, catch up by bying the October issue! * Oh, and our "ghee" reviewers also don't throw any "baloneys"-David Britland, Joe M. Turner, and Danny Orleans give you the straight dope on books, videos, and tricks. Don't forget: Starting in late October, all subscribers to Genii won't just get 12 issues for their $56, but access to every single back issue Genii has published from 1936 through December 2008. That's almost 1000 issues! Tens of thousands of columns, tricks, illusions, and articles. And it's all absolutely free to every Genii subscriber. Of course you will have to be on the internet for access, which will be through the Conjuring Arts Research Center. The issues are simple pdf documents which can be read on most electronic devices including newer Kindles, Sony eReaders, Nook, iPhone, iPad and of course any desktop or laptop computer. Every subscriber will have access to an electronic version of every issue for the duration of his or her subscription. If you are a subscriber and haven't sent us your e-mail address yet, please do so as soon as possible (to: genii@geniimagazine.com) so there's no delay in getting you access when we launch this new feature in a few months. Remarkable Magic #70 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) To pay or not to pay, that is the question? Magic is not an inexpensive hobby and props, books and DVDs do not come cheap. I have noticed a tendency for this financial model to fall apart, when magicians try to inveigle (the fancy word for weasel) free admittance into magic shows. Shouldn't magicians be the first people to support shows dedicated to their particular line of interest? Let me preface this by saying that I am not talking about friends or direct peers in the magic world. The day Michael Finney or Mac King have to buy a ticket to see my show has no chance of arriving. This column is written along more general than specific lines. My vision for the future is to see more professional magic nights springing up across the country. I believe this could be a wave of the future, not unlike the way comedy took hold in the 80s. It would be good for magic and great for magicians. The reality of actually presenting a paid show for magic lovers could begin a whole new era of professionalism amongst the magicians who participate in it and think of the private gigs generated by it. Sadly, there are many magicians who expect free admission to magic shows just because they are magicians. It is not inexpensive to produce an evening's entertainment for the public and expenses are involved that are usually totally incomprehensible to someone who has never attempted it. Sometimes it is the kind of magician who will drive 15 miles out of his way to go to 'Magic Cleaners' to get his laundry done, just because it has the word magic in its name. Flashing your IBM membership card and expecting a 'comp' just because you are a magician is as logical as walking into an Apple Store and expecting a discount on your new iPad, just because you have a subscription to MacWorld. I can almost hear Steve Jobs' roar of fury from Cupertino. If you want to support magic then go all the way. Remember any seat you are filling, could potentially have been filled by a paying customer. In a world where the new $50 thumb tip sold out at the last convention I attended, it isn't flashy to pay a few bucks to watch a quality magic show. If you want to watch a bunch of tricks performed haphazardly in an unsuitable environment go to your magic club. You will even get masses of respect when you show off your $50 thumb trick. I recently performed at 'Monday Night Magic' in New York and attended their sister venture 'Magical Nights' at the legendary 'Feinstein's.' What a model of doing things right, no wonder they have had such a long and successful run. This is a formula that could be adapted in every major US city. While in New York I was staying with my friend Peter Samelson one of the 4 co-producers of the events. A highlight of the visit was overhearing Peter and Michael Chaut's continuous phone conversations. They centered primarily on two things, quality control of their show and handling the comp situation. I gained great respect for their production just from hearing how they approached both issues. It basically came down to a very simple equation; "How can we present the best show possible and make it profitable." In my 48 hours in New York, I was amazed at their realistic handling of the 'comp factor,' and realized the position it holds in the continued success of their show. If the NYPD is ever looking for coaches in the 'good cop, bad cop' scenario they have got the perfect training team with Peter and Michael! Having had a one-man show in Las Vegas for 5 years, I have some firsthand experience of this situation. I 'comped' many people into my show happily, what they probably never realized was that for every comp I gave, I also gave the 'Maitre de' a $5 tip. Why because I'm a great guy: no because it is good business. You would be amazed at how often you comp a guest and they not only behave like 'big shots,' and then fail to tip the staff. This is how the staff earns their living; they couldn't care less if you're a member of Ring 1081 in Boise. One glorious exception to this rule was the late, great pickpocket Rikki Dunn who frequently brought guests to my show; he had a particular central booth he loved to sit in. I always made sure it was waiting for him, and Rikki always tipped the 'Maitre de' a fifty-dollar bill for the courtesy. I tried to convince him that for $50 he could have paid for the booth and still have included a nice tip! Rikki, however, would have none of it and explained; "It's the principle." It was a fine principle and made everyone happy, especially me, to realize how much he really did want to see the show. I recently attended and performed at two of Jeff McBride's 'Wonderground' events in Las Vegas. In spite of the fact I was part of the show, I gladly handed over the $10 admission for myself, and each of my guests. Admission even included two drinks - what a deal. I know how much work goes into presenting this event: they are wonderful evenings. and when I heard some magicians at the door trying to avoid the door charge, I couldn't believe that they thought $10 bucks was too much for an evenings live entertainment and to rub shoulders with the likes of Siegfried and Amazing Johnathan. To see magic grow as a commercial venture across the country, magicians must be ready to support it as a commercial venture. Skip that next $50 thumb tip and attend the next five 'Wondergrounds,' It will do more for you and more for magic! Email me at nicklewin1@me.com -------------------------------------------- 7. What Makes a Good Kid's Magician? #180 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com What makes a good kid's performer? What traits are there in a children's magician that make them fantastic or memorable? It is an interesting question to ponder and I guarantee you that each of us will come up with vastly different answers and have difference of opinions. Although many of us may differ, I would like to think there are some traits that a good kid show magician would always have. With that said, let me try and dive a bit more in what I personally feel makes a good kid's show magician/performer. First I think a good kids magician is one who realizes that THEY are what is most important in the show. They understand that THEY should be the focus. The props are merely a means in which to create a magical experience. The props themselves should never outshine the magician or performer. You want folks to remember who YOU are and to walk away having had a great experience created by YOU. The props simply are a means in which to do this. With this stated, I feel that a good kid's magician should be one who has developed a show in such a way that it engages the audience with lots of laughter, smiles and a good feeling. You want to entertain and not just wow. For kids, it is not so much about fooling them as it is using magic to create a fun experience for them. A good performer will also realize that if they took every prop and piece of equipment out of their show, they STILL could entertain and could STILL create that wonderful feeling and experience for the children watching. It is important to realize that a good children's performer is one who knows children and who realizes what makes them laugh and smile. A good performer will be able to create this atmosphere and realize it is THEM that creates that. I also feel a good children's performer is one who knows that ego should be left at home and that being a professional does not start when the curtains open and end when they close. Egos serve no purpose as a kid show performer. However, pride in your work DOES matter. There is a difference and a good children's magician will know the difference. Have pride in what you do and love what you perform. Be a professional at all times and realize that a good children's performer is one who also knows that it is called "Show Business" for a reason. they understand that the business side of what they do is JUST as important to do well as the show itself. they learn both and learn to do both well. One very important element that comprises a good children's performer is a simple fact that you must like kids. You must genuinely enjoy being around kids and like performing for them. if you do not like kids or feel weird performing for them, then walk away and change markets. There is no sense in trying to force yourself to perform for kids simply because you think you have to or someone told you it was "easy money." A good kid's magician loves children and really enjoys interacting with them on many levels. A good children's performer is also one who pushes themselves to be original and unique. They develop their own style and their own character that fits who they are. they do NOT try and duplicate someone else nor do they become another magic clone. They work on routines that highlight their own character and own uniqueness. They strive to create acts and routines that fit and work for them. Most importantly, they understand what does NOT work and what will not play simply cause it does not work for who they are. A good children's performer is also one who realizes that they NEVER stop learning. They are always evaluating the show and changing it as times change. They constantly are learning and refining their shows and routines to make sure they always play the way they were meant to. More importantly, a good children's magician is one who realizes there is power in sharing ideas and thoughts and tips with others. They realize that the magical arts is a much better place when information is shared or when they can mentor someone getting into the market for the first time. They are also folks who really try to understand what makes children laugh and enjoy magic. They do not just assume they know. They go out and study it and always research it to find out what makes children enjoy magic and then apply those techniques to their routines and what they do. In my opinion, all of these work together to make up a children's entertainer who truly can be defined as "great". As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. -------------------------------------------- 8. Tony Brook in Conversation with Tom Waldrop (Part 5) ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA TB: Speaking of State Deputies. Our very good mutual friend, Michael Roth, has been serving as Oregon Deputy for a while. He is now the Northwest Regional Vice President. Michael, as you and I both know, has remarkable organizational skills and I think together you both will do great things for The S.A.M. up in Oregon and the Northwest. I hear that there is some serious "campaigning" for an S.A.M Convention to be held in Oregon. I hear that when the S.A.M. National Council met in Portland last November, the omens are looking good for a S.A.M Convention there .. TW: Well yes, Tony. I cannot say much but from what I hear, it sure does seem like a very real possibility and I would be, as indeed all our other Assembly 59 members, truly delighted if that came to pass during the next few years. Our city certainly has the facilities to host such an event. The main issue will be our location in relation to where most S.A.M. members live. Since most conventions are held east of the Mississippi River, we have to deal with this issue all the time. With travel expenses continuing to rise, we need to keep evaluating the high cost of round trip fares to attend one of our National Conventions. The St. Louis convention split the difference-distance-wise-between the east and west coasts. The Boston, Louisville, Buffalo, and Atlanta sites certainly play against those of us on the West Coast. Well, Tony, as an International Deputy and SAM Envoy, you have sight of the Council minutes after each meeting before they are published in M-U-M and I'm sure you would know about convention sites well in advance. Of course, it would be great to read that we in Portland were chosen as a future location for a SAM Convention. It would also be great to have you back in Portland. TB: Thank you, Tom. I'd love to go back. I have very fond memories of my time there; your Assembly and the PSM treated me kindly. You all were very welcoming and friendly. Let me move along to a topic that you and I love dearly and that is the Presentation of Magic. In other words, not just the trick but performing the effect you have a booklet on that topic share some of your thinking on that ... TW: Ah yes! The presentation of magic I know it is your pet hobby horse too. But you are so right. It is not the effect but the presentation. I think that many Magicians forget that we are in the Entertainment and Mystery business and not in the "Gosh, I fooled you" business. My little booklet was just a collection of my thoughts on this topic. The items were originally written as monthly newsletter bits when I was serving as Assembly President ("The Prez Sez") and as Northwest RVP ("Veep's Views"). I believe that most of the recent additions to my library have been works dealing with this aspect of the magic craft. I have some excellent writings from Juan Tamariz, David Stone, Darwin Ortiz, Jay Sankey, Ken Weber, and others. From Ortiz I quoted, "Audiences don't like to work." The main lesson here is the "KISS" principle: Keep It Simple, Sorcerer." With this idea, I try to perform effects that take less than three minutes, use props that are recognizable, and tie it all together with a believable story. I avoid using the word "trick" when I perform. Nobody likes to be tricked. Some of them don't mind being fooled. All of them love to be amazed. As Weber says, "The trick is important but the performance trumps the trick every time." Tony, I can ramble on forever on this subject. TB: It is indeed a subject that merits time and serious discussion. Hopefully, many more Magicians will come to understand its importance after reading your words. Thank you for taking the time to converse. TW: My pleasure Tony. I've really enjoyed the conversation and hope we can do it again sometime. I trust that you'll have a wonderful year and perhaps we'll get together sometime soon. . (Hidden in this article are deliberate grammatical & spelling mistakes. Raising Funds For Ailing Magician -------------------------------------------- Message Rick Del Vecchio Magic 4 Miracles Will Raise Funds For Ailing Magician South Florida magicians lead the charge to save a friend Miami, Fl: September 1, 2010 --- Among magicians, Rachel Wild Colombini is known worldwide, both for the array of magical materials and illusions she offers at conventions throughout the world, and for her grace and beauty. She is married to a very lucky magician, also known throughout the magic world, named Aldo Colombini. Now Rachel needs a helping hand to continue her life. Rachel needs a heart valve replacement. The cost of surgery and expenses could exceed $200,000.00. Born with a congenital heart defect that was controlled by medication, for many years the condition was easily controlled. But three years ago, Rachel contracted a life threatening infection that spread to the heart valve. The infection endocarditis damages the valve even further, and many do not recover from this condition without surgery. Rachel was treated in 2007 for this and made a recovery but the valve suffered lesions. Patients who have had this infection once are increasingly susceptible to recurrent infections. On April 26, 2010, Rachel was hospitalized during a tour of the UK and doctors re-discovered the infection. Aldo & Rachel took an emergency flight back to the US after canceling a month of shows. She was treated for six weeks and the antibiotics controlled the infection again. Cardiologists have advised that another bout of the infection could be fatal and that valve replacement is necessary. Although Rachel and Aldo do have some health insurance, the cost of open heart surgery, plus loss of work puts this option out of reach at the moment. Each day that surgery is delayed, the danger grows for Rachel. Enter Ring 45 of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. Rick Del Vecchio, who for many years has served as the executive producer of the annual Magic On The Beach events for the Ring, along with the members of Ring 45, has put together a one night only fundraiser for their dear colleagues and friends, the Colombinis. " Rachel and Aldo are two of the most revered people in the magic world. A Broken Turkish Wand - Erdinc Demiray -------------------------------------------- Message by Dr. Ozlen TUNCER / Dr. TORA (Turkey) Erdinc Demiray, 49 has passed away on the 23 rd of July 2010. For most of them he may not seem to be a well-known figure but it was for the Turkish Magic Society. He was one of the senior members of IBM in Turkey. He held the membership number 42453 and was an IBM member since 1987. Being the only real "Children's Magic" performer, he also was an addict of classical magic. Erdinc Demiray, was the president of Turkish Society of Magicians, founding member of two IBM Rings 368 and 379 as well as many other social clubs and foundations. But most important of all he was for the Turkish magicians cement yes cement which bonds people together. He spent his whole life aiming to gather up the magicians under a single roof. He in fact succeeded in a large scale. He was a notable friend for his contemporaries and an older brother to the youngsters. Moreover, he encouraged Turkish magicians to integrate with the magic world. He also organised the Balkanian Magic Contest in Turkey in 2006 and was a member of board of Balkanian Magic Society since its foundation. He passed away so young that he left many unfinished projects which are waiting the successors to complete them. He survived with his widow Halide, his two sons Hamdi and Ertug and his unique daughter Miray. His broken wand ceremony was held at the Guzelbahce open air theater within the context of the 11th Izmir Get to Gether. There was a huge crowd of over 850 lay people: probably the most crowded Broken Wand ceremony ever. May he rest in peace. Sleep well our good friend. -------------------------------------------- 15. Broken Wand - Frank Brents -------------------------------------------- Message by Peter Samelson (US) Frank Brents, "America's Black Magician" On September 8th, 2010, our friend and partner, the legendary Frank Brents, passed away. For those of us who saw him perform at Monday Night Magic or elsewhere, we were fortunate; for those of us who knew him, we were privileged. He was certainly one of a kind: a trailblazer, an encyclopedia of magic, an innovator, and a remarkable and accomplished performer. He was a man, who, against all odds, became one of the best in the world at what he did. You can see a video of Frank's classic act (albeit his name is misspelled) at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85XGCVBOYoU The funeral will be held this Saturday, September 18th. The viewing will be at 12:00 p.m. and the service will be at 2:00 p.m., and all are invited to pay their respects at: Foremans Funeral Service, 10600 Taylorsville Road, Louisville, KY 40299 For us, the producers of Monday Night Magic, Frank Brents was a colleague, a wise counselor, a co-producer of our show, and a friend for life. For me, Michael Chaut, he was all this and more: an example, a teacher, and a cherished mentor. Frank, you will be missed. Levkovitch Advises On NBC's The Office -------------------------------------------- Message by Amos Levkovitch Amos Levkovitch was chosen to be the Magic Adviser for the multiple award winning TV series "The Office". The Office Season 7 premieres Thursday, September 23rd at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Amos was coaching Steve Carell who plays the role of "Michael Scott" who is an amateur magician. In his mind he is a great magician but in fact he is where we all were on the first day when we received our first magic box... Steve Carell was performing a magic routine wearing a magician's tuxedo and a black tie. Steve performed a cane to flowers, a sponge dove that appeared on the tip of a magic wand and produced a flash and a puff of smoke from his hand. He had to do all this with the flash gimmick attached to his hand, which made the handling of the props a little difficult but he pulled it off just perfectly! "It is an amazing experience," says Amos. "During my years in Hollywood, as a consultant to the television and film industries, I have met only a few stars, but I couldn't not notice a quality that they all shared, humbleness. The bigger the star, the nicer and humbler person. Steve Carell was no exception. He is the nicest guy you will ever meet. It all started when director Jeff Blitz complimented Steve on how well he did his magic. Steve didn't miss a beat and answered, "No no, it's because I have an excellent teacher. You should thank Amos." Then he turned to me and thanked me, to which I replied, "No no, thank you! for having me" and etc., etc. Our "No no no no no THANK YOU! I INSIST!" became the running joke of the day. The truth is that I didn't have to do much. Steve is a great talent. It took him 15 minutes to learn to perform a magic routine that I had asked the production team to give me two hours to teach him. It took us six takes in three hours to tape the three minutes scene. Steve and I had to spend most of this time together in Michael's "office" on the set. Steve was practicing with a cane-to-flowers and a fake dove and showed me some wacky moves that made me want to scream with laughter but this was not allowed since they were taping just outside his "office". At the end of the shooting day, we had a fantastic barbecue lunch on the set, and departed with another session of "Thank you" and "No no no, thank you!" and etc. What a great shooting day! I look forward to the next one. To view pictures please visit: _www.AmosMagic.com_ -------------------------------------------- 18.
