July Issue Of Genii Magazine -------------------------------------------- Message by Richard Kaufman - Editor Genii Magazine Our July issue with Tom Stone on the cover has left the printer and should shortly start reaching the first batch of subscribers. Max Maven writes the cover story on the Swedish Stone, with Stephen Minch doing a secondary story on the production of Tom's new book Vortex, published by Hermetic Press. Tom Stone contributes four tricks and three essays: "Amore Hotel" No Script is Also a Script "Sentient Sand" The Dunning-Kruger Effect "Oh No! Thimbles" You are Brilliant! "Glitching the Aces" Dustin Stinett brings you the only full coverage of the 42nd Academy of Magical Arts Awards Show to be published in our field, accompanied by the beautiful photos of Kari Hendler. Jim Steinmeyer, and in his "Conjuring" he divulges a great stand-up "Cards Across" he calls "Zens Koan." Eugene Burger, and in his "Showmanship Interviews" he speaks with Tobias Beckwith, manager of Jeff McBride and Marco Tempest. Richard Kaufman (oh, that's me) and Jon Racherbaumer chit-chat in their usual fashion in "Genii Speaks" and "On the Slant." Danny Orleans reviews tricks, including Will Houstoun's new "Freak," which is breaking fingers around the world. Dustin Stinett reviews DVDs, including a new title by Bob White, and and Ponta the Smith's "Sick," which is also breaking fingers around the world, but for a different reason. More Remarkable Magic - Nick Lewin #41 -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Keeping it Fresh! I am having a blast working at Harrah's this week. I am having fun just mixing and matching up material. Nothing sacred--just wholehearted one hour shows to keep me excited, and apparently the audience happy! It is very easy to fool your mind into believing you have 'An Act' and it is always the best way to perform and will always achieve the best reaction. Actually, once you have 'the act' down perfectly then that's the time to have fun and keep it fresh. I don't mean discard, everything you do well just to mix it around a bit. Keep in mind I'm not recommending this for someone who hasn't managed to form a solid act as a guideline. I love to switch blocks of comedy around from place to place. I also add/change some of the magic, sometimes significantly i.e. switch my opening and closing routine etc. So far I haven't done the same show exactly in sequence more than once. It is fun because it keeps your techy on the jump too! We can get very uptight about 'The Act' as though it is a sacred form that can't be changed or tampered with, thinking that it is always at its very best - exactly the way it is NOW! It is you they are watching, you just happen to be doing a show. Loosen up and have some fun and be prepared to make some mistakes in order to get something new right. Be an artist, not an act. What is amazing is that new jokes, and bits just seem to fly in from everywhere like flies at a picnic. Just keeping note of the changes is tough enough, however you eventually don't bother much trying and you just learn to rely on the inner performer and that he will come to your rescue! This is the moment you start to become an entertainer and not an act; a comedian instead of a magician who does 'Patter.' Patter to my mind is the deadliest word in magic! Look up the description in the dictionary and you will find; "The term was originally a colloquial shortening of "Pater Noster" and referred to the practice of mouthing or mumbling prayers quickly and mechanically, without any expression of meaning or sincerity. From this, it became a slang word for the secret and equally incomprehensible mutterings of a cant language used by beggars, thieves, Roma people, etc., and then the fluent plausible talk that a cheap-jack employs to pass off his goods. "Hmmmmmm, not what I want to foist on an audience. Be polite actually talk to the audience and not at them, they really do notice the difference. Incidentally my Magic Martini posters are selling gangbuster. Smile! You're Supposed To Be Having Fun #170 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com poofersgrl@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com How many of you carry with you some sort of lucky charm? Maybe it's a lucky quarter or a certain deck of cards. Maybe it is that magic wand that has special meaning to you. The items that you carry for good luck can be as vast as your own imagination. They also may be silly to others, but to you, that have a special meaning. There are even rituals all magicians go through before a show. Some meditate while others can't sit down. Some may have to rehearse a certain routine in their mind while even others may say a certain prayer. We all have our own ways in which we deal with things and they simply are a part of the preparation for performance. But why do we carry such objects? Why do we go through such rituals? Maybe it is to bring us good luck in any performance we do. Maybe it is to help us calm our nerves before we hit the stage. Maybe it is even out of sheer habit. Whatever the reason, I would like to think we do these things because we feel it has a direct benefit for us as entertainers. I also have rituals I go through before every performance. I also have objects that are dear to me because of the history associated with them. However, the one object that has the most meaning to me is something others would find pretty funny. There is no real cost to it and it certainly is nothing fancy. It is a simple sign that I have inside my cases. The sign simply reads... "Smile! You're Supposed To Be Having Fun." This one single sign has more meaning and importance to me than any rituals I do or objects I carry for good luck. It is there to serve a HUGE purpose for me. It is there to always remind me of WHY I perform magic. I think too often we forget just why we are magicians and the impact our shows can have on people. We get so lost in the realities of life that we forget that we are there to entertain. We are there to put smiles on faces, make people feel good or simply bring a laugh or two. There are so many things I can find to complain about during a gig. The weather can be too hot. The client could not be as friendly as we like. The set up is taking too long. I am tired and not feeling well. The list goes on and on. However, remember being a magician is something one should be proud of. It is also not something we should be taking lightly. So no matter what is going on in your head or in your life, you need to rise to the occasion and be a professional every single time out. Being a professional does not mean giving 50% effort. Being a professional does not start when the curtains open and stop when they end. Being a professional happens all the time. It is who we are, what we are and how we react and interact with people. So the next time you are upset, angry or frustrated at a gig, remember that there may be a kid in that audience that is seeing their first magician EVER and YOU are it. That is a huge thing. You owe it to yourself to bring your A game every show. You also owe it to your magic brothers and sisters. So when you are setting up your show take a moment to simply remember to "Smile! You're supposed to be having fun." As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. - I would like to let everyone know that I just released a NEW book and E-Book to the magic community. "Blue and Gold! Tony Brook in Conversation with Harry Maurer (Part 2) ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA Tony Brook In Conversation With Harry Maurer - Part 2 TB: I see what you mean. Of course, if we have an act at the Tropicana or the Hilton or a daily show at a Club or Theater, the act runs every night and the audience changes. On board you have what is essentially a captive audience .what adjustments, if any, do you have to make? Are you obliged contractually to come up with different acts? Or variations? HM: Well, just like a club or casino showroom on land, the audience onboard will change, but only after a week or two. That means that each time you are in front of that particular audience, you must have a completely different show! I have worked on ships for many years now and we now have three different, solid and proven 45-minute shows that we present each and every cruise. Getting to that level is very difficult - I know performers who have spent a lifetime putting together just one 45-minute show! When you have three shows, you need to balance your material so that each show is strong and each contains a good variety of material. Once that is done, you then have to plan the best order of your shows - which one would be a good "first" show for the audience to see you in? Which would be a good "second" show? And then, which would be a good final show that will leave the audience -- not just liking you -- but remembering you! TB: How right you are Harry. Those are indeed the magic words. As Entertainers, we want the audiences to remember us and not the "tricks" or props. On land, when we finish the show, we pack and go home to switch off and chill out. I've been told that when you are working on a Cruise ship, you are always "on" even when you are not performing .and so, have to stay in the Performer/Entertainer persona pretty much 24/7 whilst mingling with the passengers. Tell us a little bit about this aspect of Cruise work? HM: Well..Yes & No. Each performer has his or her way. You've seen me offstage, and we have socialized together and I am rarely "on" when I am not performing. Offstage, I like to be a normal person and I enjoy interacting with people - and rarely do we talk about magic! We talk about hobbies, we talk about travel and we joke and have fun. My wife, Carol-Ann and I are very fortunate to work on the 5 and 6 star cruise lines - the very "best of the best" -- and we often sail with interesting people: movie stars, former U.S. Presidents, politicians, sports figures, Kings, Queens and Royalty! Maybe I'm wrong, but I think people like that tend to stay away from characters who are constantly "on" all the time! It's just not my style! However, I am certainly aware that we are on display as we walk around the ship and people observe us all the time, so we are conscious of how we are perceived by people. TB: The last time we met, Carol-Ann was telling me that she was in the process of putting together her own 10-minute act. I believe this was to provide a different flavor to the show and to also give you a breather to prepare for the next parts of the show? How's that going? HM: You've got a good memory! It's really going well! I always wanted Carol-Ann to have more "meatier" routines in the show -- routines where she is the "star", and since you and I last saw each other, we have added two extremely strong routines for her into the show and we have about three more on paper that we are working on. Ironically, none of them give me a chance to get offstage - but we're working on it! TB: Good to know. Love to catch her performances sometime soon. Let's talk a bit about your voice and presentation skills. You have been complimented many times on your flawless performances and your "Game-Show" personality that you use as your main performing persona. You even have a routine that is called "You Bet Your Life" that's a magic trick and a game show parody as well. Share with us a little background about that . HM: Well, you have to understand my style and theory of entertainment. I started performing in nightclubs as a magician when I was only 13 years old, so my stage personality started developing from a very early age! I didn't want to invent a make-believe character and I didn't want to copy someone else's style. My character is the very best of who I am personally - but amplified! When I was in college I studied theater at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University and one day in Theater History class I learned about "Comedia del Arte" performers and realized -- that is what I am! A character in a "Comedia del Arte" play spends his entire lifetime studying just one character, and over the course of his lifetime he adds nuances that make the character better and better. Early on, I started out as a funny and "cocky" kid borderlining on being a "smart-ass" - which was pretty adorable when I was 15 or 16 years old, but then as I got older, it became a little caustic and I learned to tone down the cockiness and the character came across "warmer" - funny and likeable (.but I still borderline on being a smart-ass!). On top of that, I've always had a distinctive voice - one that sounded like an announcer or game show host and I still often get kidded about it -- but it really is my voice! So I developed two routines in my show that capitalize on that - "You Bet Your Life" is one of them, and a "Borrowed Bill" routine is another. The 21st Annual "Famous Unknown" ------------------------------------------- Message by Charles Zuis News from the Chazoo/Willie the Clown's Hall of Fame of Famous Unknown Magicians and Clowns The 21st Annual "Famous Unknown" Parlour Foray was held on June 5th at Schuyler Lake NY, with Mike Miller President of the Society of American Magicians as the featured "Famous Unknown". Mike Miller, along with others in attendance presented a lecture and show. Charlie Zuis, founder and owner was a bit under the weather so his fellow "Unknowns", Alan Drew, Maine, Phil Messina, NY and Ray Eyler, Maryland along with others pitched in to see that the Show went on as originally planned. The event, an annual one day informal event is dedicated to preserving the personalities and artifacts of the many home-town magicians who are the backbone of Magic. These folks are the relatively unknown local magi's and clowns who perform for service clubs, schools and community agencies. They never make it big time but ought to be respected for their contributions and remembered for their hard work and perseverance. Future Parlour Forays will be evaluated as time goes by. -------------------------------------------- 11. The Kiddie Park Magician -------------------------------------------- Message by David Lea The Kiddie Park Magician David Lea starts performing for another season starting June 16th and every Wednesday evening at the Bartlesville Oklahoma Kiddie Park. At the age of 14 back in 1976 David watched the movie Houdini. After watching the movie David started reading every magic book he could get his hands on. After learning some tricks from the books David started performing for his friends and family. David wanted to buy some new magic tricks but needed some money so he started working at a small amusement park called the Kiddie Park as ride operator. With his first check in hand David was off to Tulsa to Top Hat magic to buy his first real magic tricks. David would do tricks for the kids that waited in line to ride the rides. In the 80s David became one of the managers of the Kiddie Park and would still do magic for the kids that visited the park. Now over 30 years later David is still the manager of the Kiddie Park and is known as the Kiddie Park magician Who performs weekly shows for the children and adults who visit the Kiddie Park. The Kiddie Park has 16 amusement park rides and tickets are only 25 cents and most of the ride takes one ticket and the rest only take two tickets. www.Kiddiepark.net So if you are visiting Tulsa make the short drive and come visit the Kiddie Park and David. Broken Wand Felix Snipes -------------------------------------------- Message by Dennis Schick Rev. Felix Earl Snipes, 76, of Atlanta, Georgia, died June 11, 2010. His I.B.M. membership number was 11667, and he had been a member since 1969. He was a member of the Georgia Magic Club, Ring 9, as well as the Order of Merlin Shield (thirty-five years a continuous member). He also was a member of the Society of American Magicians, Assembly 30, and the Fellowship of Christian Magicians. He became fascinated with magic in the first grade when he saw his first magic trick. He read every magic book he could find in the library, and even made his own props from cardboard. He performed magic shows in junior high and high school, but after graduating high school, magic took a back seat to family and religion. In 1952 he committed his life to Christ at a Billy Graham Crusade, and decided to go into the ministry. At Mississippi College he met his future wife, and they married in 1954. In the late 1970s magic reappeared in his life and he decided to use magic in his ministry. He launched his "Wonder-Full Weekend" evangelistic crusades in 1982, and took them throughout the United States. He served fifty-nine years in full-time ministry, and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Atlanta for forty-seven years. In 2004 he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an unusual condition for a seventy-year-old to develop. He turned his magic ministry over to others -- Greg Davidson, and then Scott Humston -- as his health deteriorated. Those two ministries continue as lasting legacies for Rev. Snipes. Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years, Patsy; children Larri (Amy), Teresa (Frank) Vogel, and Stan (Ashley); eight grandchildren, and one great granddaughter. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to New Dimensions Evangelism, or to the Atlanta Passion Play. -------------------------------------------- 18.
