More Remarkable Magic - Nick Lewin #31 -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) A Sunday and Monday night to remember. I recently had the pleasure of performing at the legendary 'Monday Night Magic' in New York. What a pleasure it was to be incorporated into one of magic's most successful events. I have been trying to include this event into my schedule for many years and finally the stars aligned perfectly. An added bonus to my visit was that I got to stay with Peter Samelson, this was a two man magic convention all on its own. Peter is a really accomplished and thoughtful magician who is quite unique in the attention to detail and subtleties he brings to his art. I suspect we could have chatted magic for many more nights without any significant break in the conversation. Peter picked me up on Sunday morning at the Port Liberty Terminal in New Jersey, which was well beyond any call of duty. To pick up a disembarking passenger at this port requires, patience, dedication, several cell phones and a great deal of luck. Fortunately we seemed to be blessed with all the above. I visited the 'Magical Nights' at the Legendary 'Feinstein's at Loews Regency'' that first evening and got my first taste of the careful planning and minute attention to details that have made such a success of this event well as 'Monday Night Magic.' No wonder their success has been as extended and thorough as it has. 'Feinstein's' boasted an audience as sophisticated as any I have ever seen. Neil Sedaka was in the audience with his grandchildren enjoying the perfect family entertainment. The pre-show close up by David Condon and Peter Samelson was superb, it was wonderful to see the process of table-to-table close up turned into an art form. In fact I couldn't resist working a table or two myself and was delighted to find I hadn't lost my touch at this delicate and delightful style of magic. The stage show opened with the astounding sword swallowing of Todd Robbins. To be absolutely honest I didn't quite believe it was all totally genuine or I might have been a lot less happy watching, being of a slightly squeamish nature! His dry humor added greatly to a unique performance. The headliner that night was Asi Wind who performed some highly original and totally baffling magic and mentalism, the show was very tightly constructed and the crowd loved it; so did I. The entire event was a home run! The following day Peter took me to visit Charles Reynolds and his lovely wife Regina. We men happily talked magic while poor Regina was toiling away at the tax returns in a back room. It didn't seem fair, but I suspect it is a scenario being enacted in many a magician's home! We then drove to the Bleecker Street Theatre for 'Monday Night Magic' and my part in the proceedings began. The theatre was just perfect for a magic show with not a bad seat in the house. The technical staff was not only helpful and friendly but also really great at their craft. It was a smooth, professional production that really showed of the performers at their best. I certainly wasn't surprised at the quality of the show, in fact by now I really expected it. The amount of phone calls and communication that goes on between the producers to ensure quality control and smooth sailing was astounding. The show began at 8:00pm and was hosted by Todd who again showed his skill as both a performer and an M.C. He began by introducing David Oliver from Boston, whose comedy and magic struck a giant chord with the audience and he received a well-deserved ovation for his performance. The fine comedy juggling of Michael Dubois closed out the first half of the show on a really high note. He is a performer who is going places-remember his name. During the evening Michael Chaut performed some top-notch close up, which had his audience amused, confused and amazed. Michael seems to have the highly desirable ability to combine the mind of a business and the sensibility of a fine performer, a very nice combination indeed. Michael was ably assisted in the close-up section of the show by the performances of David Condon and Prakash. The second half of the show consisted of yours truly, performing my stand-up comedy and sleight of hand magic show. I had a blast and the audience seemed to enjoy the proceedings as much as I did, which is saying a lot. If this sounds like a rave review-it is! The brainchild of Michael Chaut and co-producers; Peter Samelson, Todd Robbins, Jamy Ian Swiss and Frank Brents, is something very special. Maybe it is because they are all such skilled performers themselves that they seem to instinctively understand the right moves. They collectively succeed in presenting magic as a true art form, sophisticated but friendly, and have created something very special. If you are visiting New York and fail to visit these shows, you are missing the best that magic has to offer, both onstage and behind the scenes. Bravo to all concerned, I was proud and honored to be part of the proceedings. That First Helper - #161 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com poofersgrl@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Have you ever have one of those shows where everything just seems to go downhill from the very first effect you do? Have you ever experienced a lack of a connection with an audience no matter how hard you try? Chances are if you perform any type of magic, you have certainly experienced situations like this. They happen to the best of us and our only hopes is to learn from them. Learning is the key here. To never learn from a "sour" performance is to stop learning altogether. As an entertainer, we should strive to always learn from experiences both good and bad. We need to realize that failure is not failure if you learn from it. If you learn, then failure is a stepping stone to success. Now there are many reasons why a show could head downhill. There are also many reasons why you may lack a connection that you are trying to establish. However, one area that many seem to forget about is that perhaps it is that very first helper you brought on stage. Now I am not saying that you blame him or her or that it is their fault. What I am saying is that you need to be aware of just how important this person really is. You need to realize that how you pick that very first helper can set the tone for the entire performance to come. Let's think about this for a second. In most cases, your audience has never seen you before. Often times it is the very first time these folks have come together to form an audience. Simply stated, these folks have no idea who you are or what you are all about? They have yet to really understand your personality and what the show will be like. Likewise, audiences in general get very nervous about magicians and magic shows. How many times have you gone to seek an assistant and watched people slouch in their seats or look away from you. They do so because somewhere down the road they saw a bad magician embarrass a helper on stage. So it is safe to say that every show we do, we start at a disadvantage. Those first few minutes are so critical in setting the right tone for the show. They are also critical in letting the audience know who you are and how the show will go. They need to learn that they can let down their guard and get into the experience you create. This is why I find it so important to pick the right helper for that very first helper routine you do. What this helper does and how he or she reacts with you, sets the atmosphere for what is to follow. The audience is watching what is taking place and they want to get a "reading" from the experience. If they sense the person is having fun and laughing and having a good time, they will loosen up and get more involved. They will welcome you in more and be more willing to assist you going forward. Do not pick just anyone. Really be selective with who you pick as your first helper. Really know what routine you are doing and develop a set of criteria as to the person you feel will best work with that routine. Only you will be able to determine the type of helper that usually plays well. But how do you do this from the stage if 1) you cannot see your audience or 2) you do not have enough time to really be selective? One thing I always try and do is to scout out the audience ahead of time. I can do this a variety of ways. If I am at a theater show, I can perform strolling magic as people are being seated. I can wear plain clothes and just watch people coming in. If I am at a birthday party, I can look at the children at play or do a warm up exercise before the show starts. This gives me time to see how people act and react. Learn to take this information and utilize it. This way when a situation does occur, you know how best to handle it so that no audience member ever leaves the show anything less than totally entertained. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. Tony Brook in Conversation with Mark Weidhaas (Part 3) ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA TB: Absolutely. You and I, and I'm sure, many others too, are on the same page on this one. There are some new ideas that have been launched and a few more are in preparation . MW: Yes. You are right Tony. There are a number of S.A.M Member ideas: For our worldwide members, we have begun a new membership option. It seems the magazine, M-U-M (one of, if not the best magic periodical, edited by Michael Close) can be delayed or even lost being shipped overseas. In addition, the extra cost of shipping has to be paid by the international member. Now, we have a less expensive member option that will deliver the magazine directly to your computer on time. It is the paperless option and it is included in the annual subscription of only $45. It takes a little getting used to, but is very intuitive and easy to use - flipping pages on your computer! We have links on our ads that take you right to the advertisers' website. You can print a page if you like, or if you want the entire issue, you can order it. By the way, we also have a trial membership - a 4-month membership that includes the M-U-M, and the other benefits of membership for $25. All of this can be found in detail on: www.magicsam.com TB: Just great. I am a huge fan of M-U-M for many reasons. As you know, I was honored to be featured in January 2001 and for three years had the honor of being Co-Host with Dan Garrett on World Class Magic. A few articles of mine have appeared there since. However, to be totally honest, I enjoy it because of the interesting articles and indeed ideas, effects and knowledge that it always contains. I have no problem with publicly admitting that some of my best performance ideas were sparked by something I read in M-U-M. Our magazine reflects the fellowship of The S.A.M. Now this is what you mean isn't it about the friendship ? MW: Yes Tony. I cannot stress and emphasize that point strongly enough. M-U-M the magazine stands for our motto: Magic-Unity-Might. The June issue will mark the occasion of Volume 100, Number 1! That is a long history of members sharing stories, tricks, reviews, and news. I've heard some Assemblies and magicians are planning to buy ads in this issue to offer their congratulations! TB: Great idea! Mark, you also told me that you are willing to lecture for the silly fee of just $1. You trying to put us other lecturers out of business? MW: No Tony, of course not .I know you are kidding but it's not that kind of lecture. It is more a kind of get together and sharing .I call it a lecture but it is, as I said, a tool that helps Magicians to learn to develop. Since I will be traveling to Assemblies as President, I will be providing information about the new and old SAM programs. If they're also interested, while I am there, I can also provide this program based on my experiences performing for families. It's called "Anatomy of a Kids Show," and I will show how to get your foot in the door, how to get a leg up on the competition, how to get a hand from the adults, use your head when picking material, transplant effects into other shows and perform from the heart. And by the way, it's not a Dollar. It's Free. TB: Mark, you're right. I was kidding. I phrased it that way so I could let everyone see the merit in what you are doing and that you will, schedules permitting, be available to give this lecture to any Assembly. You will be drawing from your own vast experience in these areas ... MW: Yes Tony. They are from mainly my Inspector Magic shows: My favorite venue to perform is educational school programs. I have about 25 different theme magic shows, and my forte is developing these programs that are entertaining for the children (and the teachers) yet provide quality educational curriculum. My shows are multi-faceted. For example, I have a geography program that has a different magic effect for each continent. But it also has another tie-in to each continent with a different Dr. Seuss book, so now the show is also a literacy program. But Dr. Seuss stories often deal with diversity and acceptance of others, so it is also an anti-bully program. I'll have to put some of the shows on hold, as I am looking forward to traveling for the S.A.M. Besides the US, I hope to travel to England and The Magic Circle and to the S.A.M Assembly in Japan. TB: It's not long now, just a few months and you will be President of The S.A.M. I would like to take this opportunity, to personally and indeed on behalf of all S.A.M. members worldwide, to wish you good fortune and much success. Thank you Mark for taking the time to share. It has wonderful conversing with you. MW: Thank you Tony. It has been a pleasure. And I am glad that I can call you my friend in 2010, and always! Please let your readers know I look forward to greeting them and become friends with them in Atlanta, June 30 - July 3. (Hidden in this article are deliberate grammatical & spelling mistakes. British Ring Convention News -------------------------------------------- Message by Bob Hayden PRO to the British Ring One who requires no introduction to regular British Ring conventioneers is Jimmy Carlo. What an impact he made when he made history in the 1991 stage competition by winning not only the coveted Silver Shield itself but was judged to have performed the Best Comedy act and have had the Most Original Act - the Sumo act. When did Jimmy start performing Magic? It was in his early teens to youth clubs and small local functions in his hometown of Wolverhampton. But it was not magic that was to be his chosen career on leaving school. He became a professional drummer touring with his group Bulldog. However his passion for magic was nor forgotten as he regularly showed his magical skills to groups who would hang around long after the concert had finished. As a drummer his last summer season was in Skegness with the comedy band Bumper Bundle for it was there he met Ann who was to become known as Crystal to the magical fraternity. On moving back to Wolverhampton they set about working on a comedy act Jimmy Carlo & Crystal and were fortunate enough to secure a 6 month summer season in Jersey performing 2 shows a night in different hotels. This experience allowed them to finely hone their act and by devising a number of new acts to their repertoire for a decade they played various summer seasons, cruised with top class cruise lines and played various roles in pantomimes. Their TV appearances worldwide were numerous and they represented the UK in the United Slapstick Comedy awards on Sat3 TV Germany. In 1999 they were crowned British Champions of Magic. Seven years ago Jimmy made the decision to stop touring and concentrate on a passion he had retained from his youth, that of entertaining children. Now appearing as Jimbo, through his action packed 'Jimbo's Comedy Show' he has become one of the most sought after and successful Children's entertainers in the Midlands. Another accolade came Jimmy's way in 2009, this time in the USA when at the annual KIDabra Convention in Pigeon Forge Tennessee he was the first ever winner of the title 'KIDabra International Family Entertainer of the Year'. This led to him being booked to appear at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. A little apprehensive to perform before a young American audience, Jimmy was relieved to hear the chant of Jimbo, Jimbo Jimbo before he even entered the room. What a reception he received when he finally finished. Jimmy Carlo will be lecturing and performing items from his award winning show at Eastbourne together with routines from his Kid-Ability, Games Ability and new Balloon Ability DVD's. This is a must lecture for all children's entertainers. You cannot fail to learn from a Grand Master of his craft. 'He is the man you can't keep out of your mind!' This can only be Graham P. Jolley. He is the extremely engaging mind-reader, psychologist and entertainer with a flair for keeping audiences enthralled. His mind-reading ability baffles every audience he meets and gains their instant respect. Graham P. Jolley is regarded as the most outstanding mind-reader of his generation presenting an unforgettable performance with no parallel in show business. What's more he is very funny, a characteristic rarely associated with or found in mind - readers. Whatever he does, whether it is a seemingly impossible feat using a telephone directory, reading your mind or predicting your destination and with whom it is done with lively cutting and poignant one-liners throughout the performance with the emphasis being on humour and audience participation in the best possible taste. Graham P. Jolley has developed his character to perfection. He is a walking object lesson in presentation, a true comedy genius who uses a delivery that completely disarms you. Here are another two of the Stars of Magic who will be at Eastbourne in September highlighting the diversity of the magic that can be seen at the British Ring Convention. Have you made your registration yet? There is a feeling among the young and even the not so young in the magical fraternity that the Convention is steeped and dominated by the magic of days gone by. The basic principles on which the art of magic are founded cannot be changed, only the techniques involved and their presentation can be developed. Yes we do feature some of the grass root magic of yesteryear but strive to ensure that acts that have raised the standard of our art to suit the tastes of a typical family audience of today are to the fore. The much maligned axiom of 'it's not what you do it's the way that you do it' is as relevant today as it was at the very first Convention. These developments and new techniques will be seen in performances and explained in the wide range of lectures by the magicians of this generation alongside those with a long established wealth of experience. So come along. You will not be disappointed. -------------------------------------------- 11. 16th Annual Magic Auction -------------------------------------------- Message by Larry McMechan 2 Day auction - Sat & Sun May 29th and May 30th Located in the Preble County Auction Gallery 210 Nation Ave., Eaton, Ohio 45320 Consignments are now being accepted for our annual magic auction. Magic At The 'boutique' Hughenden Hotel, Sydney, Australia -------------------------------------------- Message from Alfred Hayes (Aust) Recently initiated MMC member, Bruce Glen, is on a winner if the reception from the opening night of his 'gig' as 'Magical Storyteller' in the intimate parlour of the Victorian, Italianate, Hughenden Hotel (in the Sydney suburb of Woollhara) is to go by. Titled, "Magic & Fairytales for Grown Ups (of all ages)", it's a journey into magic woven around the hotel's history. We commence our journey down the rabbit's hole in Alice's Wonderland. (Hughenden is the 'home' of Literary Associations) The atmosphere is near perfect in this boutique styled parlour, lacking the imposition that can be annoying of "table hoppers". Antique style leather couches together with tables and chairs prepare you for an hour of 'adventure'. Bruce is an actor and radio announcer for the ABC so his delivery of the 'story' of the hotel's history is interesting, yet casual. Absorbing, when coupled with magic to illustrate his 'story-line' delivery. Some of the magic is 'standard' adapted to the situation, some beyond the usual. The verbal expressions from audience members when the 'magic occurred' certainly showed their surprise and appreciation. His dress is that which reflected on the occasion (his bow-tie was something I, personally, would 'die' for). Prior to the performance, the audience partook of a well presented meal in pleasant surroundings, without rush or pressure. If you hadn't finished your dessert, it was graciously served at a table for you in the parlour. (The 'Passionfruit Souffle' was something special!) ... The audience lingered on after the closing, something seldom seen these 'rush and bustle' days. Glen's performances are on the last Thursday of each month ... Dinner, retiring to the parlour for the 'show', costs $AUD60. Show only, $AUD35. -------------------------------------------- 13. You get the 8-day/7-night cruise, the stage shows, the close-up shows, the lectures, the receptions, the workshops, the camaraderie & fellowship, a night at the Magic Castle, and more!
