More Remarkable Magic #15 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Getting it started Right. The first 30 seconds of your act is the most important. That means that the way you look and the manner in which you walk onstage are vital. If you really mean business you had better get that down immediately. Wear a good-looking outfit that works for the image you want to project to the audience. If you want to be Mac King don’t dress like Lance Burton and visa versa. What music are you going to use for your entrance? Why are you using it? It is my belief that the most important use of that music is to get you in the mood to perform. Use a piece that you enjoy listening to and can move to in a graceful manner. By the time you begin your show your persona is pretty much established in the audience’s subconscious mind. Unless you plan some kind of nifty switcheroo in your character then you had better establish it quickly and effortlessly. It is an old fashioned notion but I am a great believer in the idea of doing some deep, slow breathing in the wings. Just slow your breathing down and exhale more air than usual. If you concentrate on the feeling of your feet on the ground and it will quite literally ground you, I go a couple of steps beyond this and an hour or so before the show I do some breath work. There is a marvelous app for the iPhone called ‘Breath Pacer’ that allows you to easily and systematically take your breathing from where it is to where you want it to be. Your whole show is fueled by breath so you might as well get it right. It is a lot more important to your show than your double lift and you probably spent a whole bunch of time working on that. I also have a pre-show ‘warm-up’ playlist on my iPod that I like to sing along with (in a private spot of course, dear God) as I like to work on the upper and lower range of my voice. I like to add lots of texture and tones to my delivery because it can really punch up your show in a big way. Sometimes the difference between a chuckle, a laugh or a round of applause is in the mechanics of the way you deliver the line. It is useful to know how long it will take you to walk briskly to the center of the stage. This can help you tailor exactly how long your intro should be. This is especially true if you have live musicians playing charts for you. Nothing looks better than having your intro music ?end exactly as you hit the microphone stand. The great British actor John Mills performed a one-man show well into his last years. One thing the audience probably never realized is that he was almost totally blind. They would never have guessed it from the way he walked quickly and confidently to the center of the stage and the waiting microphone. He would always arrive early at the venue and count exactly how many steps and the exact orientation of his path. Well, there are a few thoughts that you probably haven’t heard of before. They get you to the center of the stage ready to perform. That doesn’t sound like much but don’t forget that these are the most vital moments in your show. Just watch the way that a professional magician begins his show and then watch a non-pro do the same thing. I totally reject the concept of the semi-pro. They don’t exist in the real world only in magic clubs. Even if you don’t want to be a pro you might as well learn how to behave like one. Be kind to your audience. Check out my new blog on my website www.nicklewin.com -------------------------------------------- 6. King/Queen of the House - #141 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com I am sure many of you have heard or even used the expression, “King of the House.” Maybe it was joking around with buddies at work or in reference to a TV show of the same name. It refers to the notion that the person runs and controls the house in which he lives. He is the boss and everything revolves around him. All decisions decided by him and his decision are final. In many ways the phrase signifies a certain social level or hierarchy. However, with it can also come ego and attitude. In most households you can always locate the King of the House simply by looking around and watching how people react to each other. But there is also a situation that occurs when performers enter a home to work an event. We immediately know who the King of the House is and this often determines who we are dealing with for the event. This is the person who will be telling us where to set up, where to park and when guests will arrive. But an interesting situation occurs that I think we have all experienced.....the King of the House is not always an adult. There are often times when we find out that the King of the House is actually the child whom we are hired to perform for. They sometimes can be referred to as the “Problem Child”, “Hyperactive kid” or simply “The Devil’s Spawn.” Now I joke about it but you all know what I am referring to. It is usually that child who immediately wants you to know that the entire world revolves around them and you better do what they say. You know it the minute you arrive at the door. These types of children will behave in certain ways that often times are predictable. They tend to want to speak out during a show and give you commentary on everything you do. They may not be able to sit still and may jump up to their feet or approach you during a “see don’t see” style moment. They also may want to try and steal the focus when brought up on stage to help you out. If you steal their spotlight, they may even cross their arms and give you a defiant look. The list goes on but I think it is safe to say that most of us have experienced this behavior before. But one can learn from this if we realize it happens and we can spot it ahead of time. The first thing to realize is that in many cases, the child acts this way because the parents are not in control. You must also realize that it is not your job to play disciplinarian during your gigs. You need to maintain control and stay in character the best that you can. This is not to say you allow the child to ruin the event. There are methods and tips for trying to handle the situation. - Try and educate the customer ahead of time. This can be done through your phone call to them when booking the show as well as through any correspondence you send or mail to them. If you send out a confirmation letter, simply restate your thoughts on there. It can be worded simply as a suggestion for them as to how to have the best show possible. To do this you request the presence of at least 2 or 3 adults at the show and sitting with the kids at each side. - Encourage that your show is a family style show meant to be viewed as a family. Adults will have as much fun as the kids will. - Send out a helpful newsletter to all customers ahead of the show. This newsletter or flyer can talk about 10 steps they can take to ensure a wonderful party experience. Most customers would love receiving this as they are not used to running party events and your suggestions may be a big help to them. - When you get to the event, try and get to know the birthday child ahead of time. This allows you to get a sense for how the child reacts and gives you an opportunity to build trust and possible friendship before the event starts. Show interest in what they do and their likes. In many cases, a child will act wild simply because they want attention. - Set the ground rules for the show at the start of your performance. This does not mean lecturing to the kids. It simply means to stay in character and show them the rules of how you select your helpers. It might be something like 1) sitting down 2) hand raised and 3) a big smile on your face. If you have problems with the child in the show, go back to these rules and remind the children of them. - Change your level of your voice. Often you can simply start to talk quieter and slower and you will notice the audience reacting with you. It is a psychological thing and it works very well. - Select your helpers that are following the rules the best. This sets an example for the others to follow. These are only a few suggestions that do seem to make a big difference. The key to remember is that not everything stated here is going to work 100% of the time. These are simple tools to be used to assist you. If you use them, I think you will find much more success then you will failure. Educate and empower your client while staying professional. That is the key to any success. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. - I would like to let everyone know that I just released a NEW book and E-Book to the magic Community. "Blue and Gold! Sid Lorraine Is Blogging! -------------------------------------------- Message by Julie Eng (Canada) Sid Lorraine was, among other things, a magician, artist, filmmaker, historian, and humorist. Born Sidney Johnson in St. Neots, Huntingdonshire, England in 1905, he immigrated to Toronto, Canada with his family in 1914. Sid was not only a professional entertainer, acting as a comedic magician and master of ceremonies in variety theatre and private concerts in and around Toronto, but he was also a dedicated amateur, passionate about magic and a fixture at magic conventions and magic societies. Because he straddled both camps - the professional and the amateur - and two continents, Europe and North America, Sid was the hub of the wheel for much magic of the twentieth century. He passed away on October 15, 1989. Two years ago David Ben, Artistic Director of Magicana, acquired the bulk of Sid’s magic collection from Sid’s wife, Rene Johnson. David found amongst many buried treasures, Sid’s handwritten memoirs. Magicana is pleased to parcel out these memoirs - augmented with images and ephemera from Sid’s archives - as "Sid’s Blog: The Magical Chatterbox" as our featured online exhibition. The Magic Circle London -------------------------------------------- Message by Wolfgang Riebe This is going to sound like a marketing ad, but this is not my intention. How many of you have heard about magic shops, venues and places and have visited them with high expectations, only to be disappointed? Either they are run down, small, or just not what you expected. When last have you visited the Magic Circle in London? It was about 12 years ago when I last attended a meeting before they had purchased their new premises. With all my traveling I have never had the time, and to be honest, whenever I was in London, I had memories of the old venue, which weren't that great. So I never bothered to go back again. Well, if I can ever recommend a site to visit in London, do yourself a favour and go visit them at 12 Stephenson Way near Euston Station. I was totally blown away! Firstly, the facilities are awesome. A lot of magicians have dedicated an incredible amount of time to make this, in my opinion, the BEST magical venue in the world. What struck me the most was the passion of the older members, and the pride in the venue. We were given a tour of note by Leonard - wow what a knowledgeable and fascinating man. Imagine seeing Harbin's original Zig Zag, clothes worn by Chung Lin Soo and one of his 'Aerial Fishing rods', Tommy Coopers Fez, Houdini's Straight Jacket, and so so much more. The displays are mind blowing, even a replica of the shop window of the Magical Palace. Everything is so beautifully displayed. The entire history of magic, from secret gadgets to props in the museum. Posters, memorabilia, secret rooms - this is a magician's paradise. From the Devant room to a full theater. I could get lost in their library for a year easily! I have visited many magical sites and venues around the world, but none have touched me like The Magic Circle in London. I have performed many times at the Magic Castle in Hollywood and that too is a magical place, but London's Magic Circle to me, has just taken the lead. It's modern, it's incredibly well laid out, it's magical, and above all, each member has a passion and dedication to the art. The only thing I found a little sad is that the majority of members where older people and it has been them that have done so much to keep magic alive. All younger magicians should really make a plan to visit and learn from some of the greats there, and keep this great art of ours alive. Imagine going to a Monday night meeting and socializing with many of the greats like Alan Shaxon, Patrick Page and Bobby Bernard. If you're not a member, contact the secretary and get an invite for a Monday night meeting - it will be an unforgettable experience. I just want to say a huge 'Thank You' to all those magicians who have dedicated so much time and love into The London Magic Circle. -------------------------------------------- 13. Terry Herbert - Delightful, Funny, Clever And Friendly -------------------------------------------- Message by Ken Warner I have just returned from a very enjoyable Adelaide Convention. As usual it was a very friendly convention. Little disappointed in one the guests. He did not come up to his reputation. It was well compensated by another guest, in Terry Herbert. Terry alone was worth the cost of the convention. Delightful, funny, clever and friendly. I could go on about Terry but, if you get the chance to see him, it is well worth it. Everyone can learn from Terry. As for Ray Crowe if you have ever seen a performance by Ray you will know to expect, and get, perfection in whatever act he does. A very pleasant, entertaining performance as usual from Ray. Already looking forward to the next Adelaide Convention in 2011. -------------------------------------------- 16. My First International Playing Card Convention ------------------------------------------- Message by Lee Asher (US) This past week, I had the opportunity to attend my first International Playing Card convention. That's right, people from around the world get together and celebrate in the hobby of collecting playing cards. It sounds too good to be true! Click the link directly below and see a few photos of some super rare playing cards and playing card ephemera: http://www.leeasher.com/cgi-bin/arp3/arp3-t.pl?l=56&c=2246 (cut and paste if not clickable) It was a fantastic convention because I had a great time, learned facts about playing cards that I never knew, and saw so much neat stuff. But overall, the highlights were meeting amazing people who were very generous with their time and knowledge. On a side note, Thierry Depaulis was in attendance. If you've never heard of him, he's a pretty famous playing card historian. He and I were able to talk for a few moments, and he was gracious enough to give Asher's Announcement Members a short interview. You can find it by clicking the link directly above. Enjoy the pics, and the small interview. -------------------------------------------- 17. Broken Wand - Antonio Marquez, A Spanish Illusionist ------------------------------------------- Message by Tim Russell Antonio Marquez, a Spanish illusionist, resident in Madrid, better known as the Great Malacatin, died the second week of October in Madrid and his remains were returned to Cadiz for burial. He was very well known in Cadiz at the beginning of the nineties thanks to the support of Juan Tamariz. He performed all over Spain and in various foreign countries, and assisted Cadena Sur in the broadcasts from the Grand Theatre Fallo during the annual carnival. -------------------------------------------- 19. Radnevsky's Real Magic Review ------------------------------------------- Message by Hal Meyers (US) nytheatre.com review Martin Denton · October 11, 2009 Magic is all about deflection and misdirection. The magician gets the audience to focus on the thing that doesn't matter while he maneuvers to make something else happen—something that seems to be...magical. Actors do this, too, with slightly altered emphasis and motivation. And con men and politicians do it, also, although for somewhat different reasons. With every kind of sleight-of-hand trickster, the effect depends on the audience's willingness and desire to be amazed, or fooled; and humans have apparently limitless desire to be fooled, or to fool themselves……………… Rest of article go to: http://www.nytheatre.com/nytheatre/showpgprint.php?t=radn8946 -------------------------------------------- 20. 13th Annual Motor City Close-Up Convention ------------------------------------------- Message by John Luka (US) The 13th Annual Motor City Convention will be here the weekend of November 13-15, 2009. That's only THREE weeks from Friday. If you haven't registered yet you may wish to consider doing so. Time is getting very short. I am very excited about this year's line-up. I believe that you will find this to be one of the strongest line-ups of recent years. The magic WILL BE outstanding! The Motor City Convention will feature Joshua Jay, David Neighbors, Oscar Munoz, and Helder Guimaraes. I am planning some surprises. Tom Gagnon will be there. Who knows. Maybe you'll get to see Tom demonstrate some of the material from his soon to be released book. You card guys don't want to miss that. Joshua Jay will perform items from his column in Magic Magazine as well as some of the stuff from his personal repertoire. Joshua assures me that, in spite of his recent accident, he will be ready. You will enjoy the magic of Joshua Jay. David Neighbors is also a great addition to the convention. David has not been in this area in many years. You will see some incredible coin stuff. Be alerted that David is very approachable. Feel free to ask him any questions regarding coin magic or any kind of magic. David will be happy to answer your questions. Oscar Munoz is a very talented performer. Oscar performs an incredible amount of both Kid Shows and Family Shows. Oscar's superb magic combined with his hilarious comedy will leave you loving his material. Oscar is also an outstanding close-up magician. If you haven't seen his close up work, you are in for a big treat. Last but not least is Helder Guimaraes. Most of you have probably not heard of Helder. Helder is a world champion magician. Among his many accomplishments, Helder took the 1st Place Prize for Card Magic at the 2006 F.I.S.M. Convention. Wait until you see what Helder can do with a deck of cards. As I mentioned, this year's line-up is incredibly good. As usual, you will have an opportunity to meet and mingle with these performers, ask questions, and share some of your ideas with them. You can find more convention information, including the schedule of events, by going to the convention website: http://www.johnlukamagic.com/ Don't wait until the last minute to register. Register quickly and easily on line via PayPal. You deserve a fun weekend. Register today. There will be four lectures, two optional workshops and three close-up shows. The cost of the optional workshops is $25 for the David Neighbors workshop. Joshua Jay's workshop is $30. This is a real bargain, considering the skill of both performers. I am pleased that they agreed to keep the cost of the workshops down. Be sure to sign up for the workshop of your choice. You can do so on line or when you arrive at the convention. Some of the dealers signed up already include: Hank Moorehouse, Gordon Miller, The Wunderground, EZ Magic, Wunderground West, PMS Magic, and ABC Magic. I am looking forward to seeing you at this year's event. -------------------------------------------- 21.
