Paul Daniels Masterclass 12 March 2006 -------------------------------------------- Message by Les Williams Paul Daniels Masterclass 12 March 2006 The Little Haven Hotel South Shields As I write this note it is Saturday the 7th March and there are only 5 days to go until Paul Daniels, certainly one of the world's greatest entertainers and personalities, will deliver a Master Class in South Shields on the day before their International South Tyneside Convention.   Consider how many original routines this man created for television and corporate presentations. Even before he gets to the lecture room, from now until then he will have performed a theatre show, a private house show, done a radio interview, taken part in a major London awards ceremony and driven at least 700 miles in the space of those few days.   The man is a working dynamo with no equal in terms of magical knowledge. If this was to be a business seminar he would be able to charge thousands of pounds for that knowledge but as Magic is his hobby, and I have persuaded him to pass that knowledge on for the betterment of our Art, the fee for this FULL day is only £250UK. If you want to improve your performances do not miss this opportunity. If you want to perform better routines, even with standard tricks, and if you want to know the techniques Paul Daniels uses to arrive at his amazingly entertaining magical presentations, then this is your last chance to book a place for Thursday 12th March.  This day applies to all magicians, not just those who work in a patter style.  It does not matter what type or style of magic you want to perform, this day WILL make you a better performer. Remarkable Magic #84 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Out among the Magicians again. First of all let me apologize for the absence of my column in last week's Magic New Zealand. A family medical emergency took me down to Los Angeles with no computer. I didn't have the time or patience to tap out a column on my iPhone and I don't have the eyesight either! The good news was that I did get to catch up with some of my old friends at the Magic Castle and even make some new ones. I was particularly delighted to spend a really long lunch catching up with Ron Wilson. I took the opportunity to sign Ron up with both a Facebook and a YouTube account. Ron was one of the first of the truly computer literate magicians and was handy with a PC before I even knew what one was. We recorded a one-minute story during our luncheon together and posted it on his Facebook page. It is a great story about Senator Crandall, Johnny Paul and Jimmy Grippo. It is also available for viewing on his YouTube site: uncannyscot. Check it out! Many people have contacted me who wanted to see video of Ron's wonderful Stage and Close Up Show. I am happy to say Ron gave me a DVD filmed during his farewell week performing at the Magic Castle in 1988. As I have said before I believe Ron to be one of the true master of the performance of magic. Various videos are going to be uploaded in the near future, so stay tuned. I also had the opportunity to meet up with old friends Jack Goldfinger, Mike Elkin and Amos Levkovich at the Magic Castle. They were in their official capacity as part of the membership committee. How wonderful to have performers of that quality keeping guard on the standards of new members. I was reminded of my own audition to perform at the Castle: I was particularly nervous because Dai Vernon was amongst the audience members. At a particularly dramatic point in my show (the finale of Fred Kaps handling of Harry Lorraine's moving pencil-to be exact!) the sliding door to the Close-Up Gallery was opened up with a crash by Kuda Bux. Every eye in the room immediately turned to the open door and the imposing figure of Kuda Bux. Kuda caught Dai's attention and pointed upwards saying: "Upstairs! Hearts in the library." My audition was no reason apparently, to delay the never-ending game of hearts that was a feature of the library. Other highlights of my Castle visit was spending time with Steve Mitchell and observing the wonderfully nuanced paintings of Lenier, Lawton, Cervon and McComb that adorn various rooms in the Magic Castle. Steve and I also discussed the possibility of me adapting some of my 'Castle columns' from Magic New Zealand and rewriting them for the Magic Castle newsletter. The evening was made complete by the arrival of Pop Haydn and the night finished with a cathartic conversation about a mutual acquaintance. We had much to discuss and enjoyed our opportunity. I am looking forward to seeing Pop's one of a kind medicine show in the near future. It was astounding to me when I realized it had been over 24 years since I last worked a week at the Castle. I was pleased and excited to find it as vibrant and exciting as ever. I enjoyed meeting some of the younger magicians who had made the Castle a home and are the fresh talent that continues the re-invention that is so much a part of the Castle history and heritage. I head back to Las Vegas tomorrow and get ready to head down under for work and vacation in Australia and New Zealand. I will debut my new lecture 'Making Money with Magic: the Nick Lewin comedy magic seminar.' I will be lecturing in Sydney on March 18th and in Melbourne on March 19th. After a week cruising around the area I will look forward to reuniting with all my good friends in Auckland. Check out the new stuff on my website http://www.nicklewin.com If you like my writing become my friend on Face book, use my email address to find me nicklewin1@me.com there is also a teaser for my new magic DVD '20-2-10s' which is the first release in my 'Perfect for the Pro' routines. -------------------------------------------- 7. The secrets behind the secrets as you learn all the angles from a professional who has done it all. * You will be delighted with the tricks you learn, but even more excited by the 'tricks of the trade' that Nick reveals and his insights into the business of performing better magic. *'Making, Money with Magic' is a highly interactive seminar that will help you bring out the highest potential in your show. Nick Lewin was born in London and by 17 he was performing on a regular basis and had developed the blend of comedy and sleight of hand that has remained his stock in trade to this day even when he recently performing onstage for 7,500 attendees at an IBM conference in Las Vegas (the computers, not the magicians!). Nick began under the tutelage of the inimitable Ken Brooke and was long time friend of the late great Billy McComb. After a short run on a luxury cruise ship in the early 70s Nick decided to expand his outlook and in 1974 he moved to California. He has remained in the USA ever since carving out a career as one of the world's best known comedy magicians. He quickly made a name for himself in the 70s performing in America's showrooms and became a popular opening act in Las Vegas and a regular on the television talk show circuit including the famed Merv Griffin show. Nick has also been seen in countless television shows such as: 'Dynasty', 'Kung Fu: the Legend Continues', 'Alfred Hitchcock Presents' and 'Trapper John MD'. During the 1980s Nick became a highly sought after corporate entertainer. He performed specialized shows for an impressive array of industrial clients. Turning sand into integrated circuits for Advanced Micro Devices, channeling Albert Einstein for Toshiba and magically produced a 38-foot diesel truck for Western Star Trucks. In the early '90s Nick created his own 75-minute one-man show in Las Vegas. In a city built on feathered costumes, white tigers and sequined dancers the simplicity of his approach was initially considered quite radical. However his show was a critical and commercial success and a two-month gig ended up as an award-winning run of nearly five years. The 'Las Vegas Review Journal' described his show as: "A blend of impeccable sleight of hand and razor sharp British wit." These days Nicks show alternates with the well known Mac King show in Harrahs. We know Nick as a weekly columnist in The New Zealand magic e-zine and in recent times Nick has been persuaded to share his years of experience with magicians. This is a unique opportunity to spend a night with one of the true legends of comedy magic. The "Magic Word" Game #108 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com What is a show without a magic word? What is a magician without those chosen words, that when recited, create and make the magic happen? It is safe to say that every family-style entertainer has and uses magic words for their young audiences. But what words do you use and how can you create a sense of empowerment from these words? This is what I would like to talk about in this article. I first think it is important to understand that using magic words gets and allows the audience to be engaged in the show through an interactive process. Simply by having the children say the words gets everyone involved instantly. Interaction has always been a key element to any successful children's show and magic word usage is an easy way to add this interaction. But it also does a lot more than this. It also can empower the children you perform for. When a magic word is recited, the children see the magic happen before them. For a child, this is an amazing thing. In their minds it is themselves that is helping to create the magic. It draws them in to your show and empowers them in the process. Magic words can also be used to educate and to express an important lesson you or the client may want to get across. Magic words can be used in this fashion as well. By reciting the magic words throughout the show, helps the children to remember key important lessons that you or the client may find important. This can be something as easy as "Please and Thank You" for daycare shows. If you are doing themed shows for schools or libraries, then your magic words you choose can directly tie in to the theme. The words can be the key ideas you want the children to remember from the show. For example, a reading show for a library could have the magic words of "Reading is Magic!". A show on fire safety could use magic words of "Stop, Drop and Roll!" So magic words can also be used to educate in a fun manner. I would like to also share with you something that I do with magic words that makes it almost into an ongoing routine. It is something that I started doing a long time ago but found it adds more fun to the show and empowers the children at a much higher level. Perhaps you do something like this already. If not, then it is an easy thing to try out in your next show and see what happens from it. I use this technique a LOT at birthday party events. To me, the goal of the day is to make the birthday child feel special as it is his or her special moment. If I can do this, then the child feels great and the parents will love you for being a solutions provider to them. I start by simply using the magic words "Happy Birthday (child's name)". Now this is not a huge revelation here. I know I am not knocking people over with this choice of magic words. However, it is what you can do with it that does make it powerful. First it is important to understand why this magic word works so well. If you are at a show, just watch the child's face when they hear their own name being mentioned. They often smile and cheer. Kids love the importance it gives to them. So how do you use this and take it one step further. Well I like to try and use the words to empower not only the birthday child, but also the other children as well. So I started to realize that the principle of "magician in trouble" can work with a magic word as well. Allow me to explain. What I start to do is to use magic words other than "Happy Birthday". I might even ask for ideas from the children and pretend to hear them wrong. A classic is to hear "Abracadabra" and think they said "have a banana". Of course every time you use a magic word that is NOT "Happy Birthday (name)". The magic goes wrong and simply does not happen. This can be used as a running gag throughout the show. You and the children will realize that the magic only works when everyone says, "Happy Birthday (name)". When they recite that, the magic happens and works wonderfully. Now this works really great because you are doing 2 things that children love. 1) You are totally empowering them throughout the process. THEY feel they are making the magic work. 2) They have fun with the show at a much higher level. Seeing you get things wrong is simply funny to a child. It also allows you to have more interaction with the audience throughout your performance. So next time you use a magic word in your show, take the time to really think about it. Make it mean something and have it become a larger part of the fun YOU create. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. - "Encore! Cruising With Paul Romhany #59 -------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Romhany (NZ) I am home this week preparing for the launch of my new book next week, getting ready to head to the UK for the South Tyneside Convention and finishing up on the CSI Half Dyed Hanky routine. Sometimes I just have to turn work down on ships to get all this done, and this is one of those times!! This week's article will be a little short as I'm so flat tack here with working on the website and getting products out on time. I have been busy getting my new website up and running where I have updated many of the features, so you can now have easy access to products, view video footage, join me on Facebook, Twitter, My space and even follow my weekly BLOG. It's all very time consuming but I somehow manage to get it all done and still have a relatively normal life. My BLOG now has over forty thousand readers from all over the world. That to me, in an unimaginable number of people reading what I have to ramble on about each week. Many come for the magic reviews, some for the hints and tips and some just to see what I'm up to. Special Announcement for Readers of Magic New Zealand E-Zine I am offering for one week, the chance to be one of the first people to win a copy of my new book "Extreme Magic Make Over" for comedy classics. Highly recommended." - Nick Lewin, Las Vegas "Hal "Chickie" Spear is one of the most respected Comedy Writers in the Business, and a knowledgeable Magician as well. This book is more than a "Makeover", it's more like a" Comedy Collagen Injection from a Comedic Cosmetic Surgeon. "Like a Playtex Living Bra, Hal "Lifts & Separates" these tricks with his Comedy so that they become "Standouts with Hard Little Nipples" ....in a word...Succulent !" - Paul Kozak, Las Vegas -------------------------------------------- 10. Doctors Have Given Rick Podry 3-6 Months -------------------------------------------- Message by Jeanne Podry forwarded on by Milt Larsen Milt, I just wanted to let you know why my husband will not be renewing his membership this year. I have already spoken to Terri and informed her. Rick was diagnosed with rectal cancer back in 2004 and had the tumor removed, went through chemo and radiation. He continued cancer free for 3½ years. Recently he developed a very bad cough that would not go away and was just not feeling well. We contacted his surgeon and he found that the cancer had recurred in Rick's lungs, liver, adrenal gland, so they began chemo again. Colo/rectal cancer recurrences usually attack the lungs, liver and even the brain. Just in the past few weeks, he became jaundiced and it was found that his bile duct was blocked. They put in a stint to open that up and the next day he developed pancreatitis which put him in the hospital for several days. He should be well enough from that to begin chemo next week. Basically his doctors have given Rick 3-6 months. We are praying that the chemo may keep the cancer from spreading, especially in his left lung. His right lung, at this time, is not treatable. They also found cancer now in his left pelvic bone, but they do not see the cancer in the liver this year, so possibly the previous chemo took care of that. I didn't know if you ever put this type of information in your newsletter, but I thought I would advise the reason for our non-renewal. We can be reached at this email address, or our home address: Rick & Jeanne Podry P. O. Box 344 Cascade, MT 59421 Phone: 406-468-0148 Milt, thank you for such a wonderful organization. We so enjoyed our time there and wish you and the Magic Castle all the best. We were glad to hear you were able to negotiate staying where you are. Fondly, Jeanne Podry -------------------------------------------- 11. Seeking a Copy of a Book Called Matchbox Delights -------------------------------------------- Message by Dr. Simon J. Carmel (US) I am seeking a copy of David Ginn's book called "Matchbox Delights" (1977) which is now out of print. For the past few days I have been trying to find the copy through the websites of several used book stores but to no avail. David suggested I ask you to place my quest for a copy of his book in your Magic New Zealand e-zine, if possible. This is for research on my project. Your cooperation shall be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Sincerely yours, Dr. Simon J. Carmel 9339 Bridgeport Drive West Palm Beach, Florida 33411 USA SimonCarmel13@aol.com -------------------------------------------- 13. Terry Seabrooke on the Blackpool Convention -------------------------------------------- Message by Terry Seabrooke (UK) Just an afterthought on the great Blackpool convention. How Derek Lever manages each year with such a lineup and organization is a great magic trick on its own. Something which impressed me this year was that as well as thousands of magicians being there, some of our greats in TV comedy came along for the fun and to be with old buddies. Of course the one and only Ken Dodd was there, and that terrific Vent act of Neville King and Granddad from TV Good old days. Frank Carson of The Comedians TV show was due there, but ended up in hospital in Blackpool, but is now OK and all wish him well. Mick Miller the TV comic was enjoying himself with friends, as was Roy Walker of the very popular TV quiz show, CATCHPHRASE. Also wandering around looking for ideas was David Blaine from America. So if you want to meet the stars come to Blackpool next year! Terry Seabrooke still recovering from it all! -------------------------------------------- 14.
