George Robinson - Viking Magic - E-Mail Troubles -------------------------------------------- Message from Maria Ibâñez National President Society of American Magicians Dear Friend, A few weeks ago I was informed that we had a problem with MSN and our e-mails. I discovered that we have not been receiving all our e-mails; in fact, there were 14,000 e-mails backed up on our server! We tried in vain to down-load them but the quantity and size was just too much for our system so we had to dump them. I am explaining this because I have been receiving some e-mails from a few people complaining that I have not shipped their goods or answered their repeated e-mails, etc. Anyone who knows me knows that I answer all my e-mails the moment I receive them or at least within 24 hours. If I fail to answer anyone's e-mail in a timely manner it is because I did not receive it. It's that simple. So dear friends, if any of you have been waiting for an answer to an e-mail, please try again. We think we have corrected the problem and e-mails seem to be streaming in now. In the future, we would appreciate it if you would simply pick up the phone and give us a call to check on things if you do not hear back from us. Thankfully, 99% of you are always understanding. I hope this clears up any concerns and look forward to hearing from those that feel they have been 'ignored'. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience which was beyond our control. Remember, e-mails are not a perfect science but we will always try to answer you in a timely manner. Sincerely, George Robinson Jr. VMCW, LLC www.vikingmagic.com -------------------------------------------- 4. An Anecdotal Tribute To Ken Brooke -------------------------------------------- Message from Steve Cook Just thought that readers of your newsletter may be interested to know that I have just received new stock of LEGEND: An anecdotal tribute to Ken Brooke. This is NOT a second edition (there will not be one), this stock is still part of the original 1,000 copies to be produced worldwide. I only produce a small print run at a time (between 100-200 due to cost). The price of the book has risen very slightly due to increased production costs and postal rates. The price in the UK is now:£38-00 (inc. first class p&p). For the rest of Europe the price is now: £40-00 (inc. air-mail p&p). For the rest of the World the price is now: £47-00 (inc. air-mail p&p). So for orders from Australia & NZ to price will be:£47-00 inclusive. The first 200 print run sold out in less than four weeks. The feedback from the magical fraternity has been terrific. Many thanks to all those who sent very kind words about this unique book.  Any enquiries, then email me initially at: steve.cook243@ntlworld.com Kind regards, Steve. -------------------------------------------- 5. When A Child Cries - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com You are doing your show and everything is going great. The audience is getting into it and your routines are really going over well. You suddenly get to a point in your show where you need a young audience helper for an audience participation routine. You see a child you think looks good and bring them up on stage to applause. As you say "Hi" to the child you suddenly realize, "It's happening again!". You see the early warning signs and you know there may be no turning back. The once happy and smiling child has transformed herself before your eyes like magic. Her smile turns to a frown. Her eyes well up. Her nose starts to run. She looks out at the audience unable to move. Just when you feel it can't get any worse, the tears start to flow and the child starts crying her head off. It happens to the best of us. Every magician and every performer who utilizes children as helpers has experienced this. But what do we do about it? How do we handle it when it happens on stage. What can we do to help try and avoid the problem in the first place? The first step is in realizing that no matter how prepared you think you may be, you cannot get to a point where this will never happen. Children are just unpredictable. If you know this, then you are already ahead of the game. However, we can work on ways that when it does happen we are prepared. We can also develop ways in which we can minimize the chances of this happening. No performer wants to be on stage with a kid crying. You just feel awful and the tension is there between you and the audience and how you are going to deal with this. You must deal with it and do so appropriately because it will ruin the pace of the show if you do not. Simply avoiding it (like many do) is simply not a real solution or answer. If a child cries on stage then the first thing you must realize is that you must be able to send this child back to their seat empowered and feeling better. You also need to send a signal to the audience that you care. To just send them back to their seat and pick someone else is not an effective way of handling it. I usually get down on the child's level and smile and say something like, "That is OK(kid's name). I get scared too. But you were really brave and did a great job. Because you helped me, I want to give you something special. (I give a color flyer or certificate or something from my BOR items). "Wasn't she great folks"? I then help her back down. By doing this you address the issue and the audience sees this and sees the compassion you have. It makes you a professional and it shows the audience that you are one. The ultimate goal is to try and avoid these situations in the first place. There are a few techniques that I use and I would like to share some of these ideas with you. Some of these you may already be doing, but I feel it is important to list them in the event it can help you. - Scan the audience: I always try and scan the audience ahead of time if I can. This way I can determine which children I feel may be best suited for certain routines. I usually look for 2 people for each so that I have a back up. I spot where they are seated and what they look like. By doing this it also gives me more time. When on stage performing, it is often hard to see and you have to make choices much quicker. - Talk with an audience helper: If I am doing a routine that is critical for the success and flow of the show (for example my chair suspension illusion), I will talk with the child and parent ahead of time. I will get to know them and ask them if they can help us with something special. By doing so I build trust and know ahead of time that the person will probably work out fine. - Pick a child that is age appropriate: This simply means that sometimes we see a great and cute kid smiling and laughing and we feel that that will work great on stage. I try and stay away from this. Sure I like cute kids and such because they make for great helpers. The problem is that I also know that I need someone I feel that can work with the routine and not get scared when on stage. So I must be careful and conscious of that fact. - If you cannot see them, don't pick them: This is more for when you are performing outside or on a theater stage or any place where the visibility is poor. If you cannot clearly see the child, do not take a risk of selecting them. You need to judge the helper through their manners and through how they conduct themselves in the audience. - Go into the audience when needed: If you cannot see clearly from the stage area, then go out into the audience and find a helper that way. There is nothing that says a magician must be attached to the stage. Go out there and see the audience if this helps you make a better selection. These are just suggestions and tips that have helped me greatly over the years. Certainly there is no cure all for a child crying on stage. It happens. But if we take a look at some of these ideas, we can either avoid them or make sure we deal with it properly when it does happen. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. Products: - I am very proud to release my newest E-Book "Encore! Creativity in the Art of Magic!". It is a 21 page E-book based off my full lecture by the same title. This E-Book is about learning how to be creative, think creatively and how to apply direct exercises and techniques to allow your own creativity to grow with the magic that you perform. Every single person possesses the ability to be creative. These notes teach you direct techniques and exercises that you can use to unlock the doors to your own creativity. I discuss the reasoning behind why creativity is so important, why people have a hard time being creative and how to break down those barriers. I then go on to show you a few brainstorming techniques (derived from also being an artist) and walk you through how these techniques can be used as creativity tools. A wealth of information is shared that anyone can freely apply immediately to the magic that you do. You can order directly by going to the "Encore!" page at: http://www.magicenhancer.com/Encore.html - I am also still excited to be offering my first E-Book, "Tips and Techniques on the Chair Suspension". This has been doing very well and remains one of the only books that really covers off on so much information, tips, techniques and safety tips on the presentation of this fine illusion. Jeff Bibik's Hypnotism - Skokie Theatre -------------------------------------------- Message from Jeff Bibik Jeff Bibik's Hypnotism Show June 20 and 21! "Look into my eyes as I swing this watch back and forth...you are getting sleepy.. sleepy...sleepy.." If this is your idea of a Hypnotist, make plans to see Jeff Bibik's Hypnosis show at the Skokie Theatre on Friday June 20 and Saturday June 21, 2008. Jeff is a leader in the modern forms of Hypnosis, so there's no one clucking like a chicken or barking like a dog. Instead, there is an amazing display of the powers of the human mind. Combining relaxation, breathing and concentration techniques, Jeff leads his audience helpers on an amazing journey into their subconscious mind, where everything is real and anything is possible. "Hypnosis is a completely natural 'resting' state for the brain" said Bibik, a Chicago resident and 35 year performing veteran. "Everyone takes short mental naps several times a day. In fact, it sometimes seems the difficulty of Hypnosis is not putting people into a trance, but waking them up from the trance they are usually in! Truly, all hypnosis is self hypnosis, I am only a guide, I have no control over you and I cannot make you do anything you would not normally do. Participation is strictly voluntary." If you've not seen a Hypnotism show, you will be amazed. It's fascinating, interesting and hilarious all at the same time. Being hypnotized is a very relaxing experience, just a few minutes in Hypnosis is the equivalent to several hours of normal night time sleep. It's a great experience. Show time is 8 PM and tickets are only $15 and can be purchased at www.SkokieTheatre.com by phone or at the door if available. The Skokie Theatre is a 1915 gem of a movie box that has undergone incredible renovation to make it one of the top entertainment venues on North Shore. It is located at 7924 N. Lincoln Avenue in downtown Skokie, Illinois. The theatre phone is 847 677-7761 For more info call Jeff Bibik 773 467-4488 -------------------------------------------- 10. KIDabra International Conference -------------------------------------------- Message from Mark Daniel August 13-16, 2008 The Year of The Creative Celebrate The Year of the Creative with the Genius of Jozo Bozo, Barry Mitchell, David Kaye, Doug Scheer, Michael Mode, Brian Daniel, Jim Kleefeld and many more. Come be a part of an amazing happening, this year 2008, at the KIDabra International Conference that may well affect the future of Family and KIDshows for years to come! The assemblage of the top minds in our industry promises to be inspirational, educational and downright magical! Don't think you're creative? Want to be more so? Want to have the best program possible for your audiences? We thought so, please read on: The Year of the Creative happens this year because we need a jolt. Our art form while not stagnant, quite frankly needs an infusion. To be sure there are a handful of wildly creative folks doing this daily, however a handful is not enough. We want to help each of you to become creative dynamos. I know, I hear you now, "I'm just not that creative" you say, "I don't have the time," sorry but we're not buying it! Complacent clones are becoming much too common in our performing industry, folks who are happy to buy routines and entire shows and put themselves into business doing prepackaged performances as they come out of the box. Not only do you not have to do this, but we're going to give you permission and the tools to color outside of the lines, change things around and make them your own! Why? Because the best do and why shouldn't that be you? We're going to spend nearly a week exploring, working, laughing and thinking about this in August, with some of the best in the business. For instance, let's pick one of our speakers: a guy of Scheer Genius. Doug Scheer actually. This past January in Las Vegas at the invitational brainstorming conference KGB, I met Doug for the first time. Listening to and seeing his ideas left the rest of us blown away, with our mouths wide open! (And this is a group that's hard to do to) Three of his routines have been published in David Kaye's column Turn It Around in Magic magazine over the past few years and he's one of the best around at tying educational material to magic routines. He's an underground working pro who normally doesn't do conventions, however he's coming to KIDabra Conference! Don't dare miss him and our other geniuses August 13th-16th in the beautiful resort town of Pigeon Forge, TN nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains. (Made world famous by Dolly Parton and Terry Evanswood) Full conference and association info at kidabra.org -------------------------------------------- 12. TAOM 2008 Dedicated To Walter "Zaney" Blaney -------------------------------------------- Message from Tony Brook Texas is a great place for Magic. In fact, many of magic's leading names hail from, or are intimately associated with Texas. John Gaughan, Mark Wilson, Bev Bergeron, MarcoM, Bill Palmer, Bob Blau, Scott Hollingsworth, Bobo, Walter "Zaney" Blaney, Becky Blaney, Trixie Bond, Scott Wells, Banachek, Chuck Lehr, David Hira and a whole lot more too numerous to list. The greatest magical organization in Texas is The Texas Association of Magicians. Originally just made up of just Texas magicians, they now have an interesting list of International members as well. Founded in 1946, they have, since 1947 been holding a convention in various major Texas cities. Over the years, almost all of magic's major names have been on the bill. This year it is once again the turn of Fort Worth to Host the convention. This year's TAOM also has a number of impressive names on the bill and an excellent list of dealers. David Hira, Past TAOM President and this year's Talent Chair has worked hard to put together several well-known, but fresh faces. The talent list is unique. It consists of Headliners who are always busy working and rarely have time to attend conventions. As a result, this is a rare opportunity to see and to learn from real working professionals. Coincidentally, several of the names on the talent list, i.e. Lisa Menna, Tim Conover, Walter Blaney, Tony Brook, Dana Daniels, Norman Beck, Becky Blaney, Brian Brushwood etc., have appeared on the cover of M-U-M and/or MAGIC, The Linking Ring and other noteworthy publications. The 2008 TAOM also promises to be something extra special. It will pay tribute and be dedicated to one of Magic's living legends. Aged 80, but still performing, the one and only Walter "Zaney" Blaney. Part of the Convention will feature a Full TV style Talk Show entitled, 'Tony Brook In Conversation With Walter "Zaney" Blaney'. This is a TAOM 1st and it will be a Talk Show that Explores the Life and Magic of one of Magic's Greatest Icons. Not only will the show feature aspects of Walter's life and career as a Performer and Inventor but will also include rarely glimpsed aspects of Walter's life behind the curtain. During the Talk Show Walter will perform some of the effects that have earned him his richly deserved International reputation. Lance Burton, David Copperfield, Paul Daniels, Sylvan and many other magic notables have sought Walter's advice and indeed use Walter's inventions. Although, the Producers are also keeping several surprises as closely guarded secrets, this full TV style Talk Show will be an up-scale mega production that includes high-tech state-of-the-art lighting, sound, video and recording equipment and even a Live band. It will also feature video clips of many of Walter's major TV appearances and Live shows. For further information, including weekly updates by Common Tater go to: www.taom2008.org click on all the buttons. City info: Although the International airport has the designation of DFW ( Dallas/Fort Worth) the city of Fort Worth is a separate city and is often referred to as," where the West begins". Established originally in 1849 as an Army outpost overlooking the Trinity River, the city was named after Major General William Jenkins Worth (1794-1849) and is the 18th largest city in the USA and the 5th largest in the State. -------------------------------------------- 14.
