Re A Russell Swann Video On The Jackie Gleason Show -------------------------------------------- Message from Walter Blaney (US) This is a further correction of the link to: Russell Swann on The Jackie Gleason Show, not the Ed Sulliovan Show which I mistakenly stated in my first correction. If you wish to include my note in the next issue, use this corrected version. Many Thanks, Walter To any who saw my item in the last issue re a Russell Swann video on The Jackie Gleason Show, sorry the link did not appear. Here is a note from Russell's good friend Bill Schmeelk of Wellington Enterprises. ____________________________________ Hi Walter, I've enjoyed the comments you have forwarded to me from those viewing the Russell Swann video. Here's the link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vHVzuCSMZg If that doesn't work, go to YouTube and search for Fenwick Babbitt. Russell was quite a unique individual and I always enjoyed hearing his comments on magic, magicians, and show business. He was a fun person to be with. My WIKIMAGIC Project ----------------- Message from Brian Rolè I wish to inform everyone that my WIKIMAGIC project has been dropped immediately since I have learned through interested parties that a similar project was already in motion and initialized by Richard Kaufman's. This is a good thing, one because it has saved me a lot of time and two because magic history may now be archived well and much is already archived on Kaufman's page. I hope my effort though will be considered as an advantage so that others learn of this available source and will contribute to Richard Kaufman's page. Here is the link, check it out http://geniimagazine.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page . Please let everyone know this. Thank you for your interest. Compliments of the season, Brian Rolè -------------------------------------------- 4. Remarkable Magic #35 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Remarkable Magic. Johnny Thompson: the night I quaked in my boots! Back in the early '90s I had an opportunity to work with an act that I really admired. No-- don't jump the gun it wasn't the iconic team of Johnny and Pam Thompson. It was with the brilliant comedy juggler Daniel Rosen. I thought the combination worked so well I made it a point to get us a few more bookings together to see what might develop. Daniel and I booked a week at 'Catch a Rising Star' at Bally's Hotel and Casino and created a very cool 90 minute show called 'Out Of Control' that not only allowed us to highlight our own talents but to include Daniels highly talented friend Rae Ann Theriault into the mix. Rhea Ann was a blazing talent who went on to tour as lead singer/dancer with Bette Midler. It was a great cast and a really fabulous post-modern vaudeville review. The idea of the show was that Daniel and I each thought we had been booked for a solo show and a competitive battle began with beautiful dark haired Rhae Ann at the heart of it as a bubble brained dancer called Fluffy. Rhae Ann was a howl as we rehearsed the show in Los Angeles but something kept nagging briefly in the back of my mind. Since I couldn't quite place it I let it alone. When we arrived in Las Vegas for our first full dress rehearsal it suddenly jumped right to the very forefront of my mind! When Rhea Ann put on her costume it included a bright blond wig and black bustier dress and it was then that I realized that her character was very close to that of Pam Thompson in her role in the fabulous Great Tomsoni & Co. show. I just hadn't realized it until I saw that wig in place. I was very aware of the fact that John & Pam closely guarded their incredible creation and to be absolutely honest I had always been a bit scared of Johnny. I was not sure that Johnny knew who the heck I was and probably didn't think much of me if he did! I didn't want the appearance of a blonde assistant onstage to get me 'out of fire and into the Frying pan.' I went up to Rhea Ann and suggested she perform without the wig. She drew herself up to her full height (maybe a foot shorter than me) and with blazing eyes replied that she had created 'Fluffy' in an improv class three years before and been performing her ever since. She told me in no uncertain terms that she was damned if she would play her without the wig. I took one look at her and realized I was more scared of her than Johnny and tried to pretend I had never suggested it. We opened our show at Bally's on Monday night and it was a smash. However someone else must have spotted the resemblance and I got a call the next day that Johnny and Pam were coming to the show the next night. To say I was apprehensive would be an understatement. I was truly alarmed. To cut a long story short Johnny and Pam caught our show the next night and really enjoyed it and they couldn't have been more gracious or friendly over the issue. Whew! While seeing the similarities in the characters they also were such seasoned performers that they spotted the differences and the thought process that had created 'Fluffy.' The best part of this whole story is that it began a friendship for me with the unique John & Pam which I really enjoy. If anyone out there would like to see some clips of 'Fluffy' with Daniel and myself performing our wacky version of the old burlesque item 'The Doctor Sketch' from this Vegas show then follow this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyaRvGIDngA There is also another great clip from 'Out of Control' on my YouTube website. We never repeated the show but to this day it remains my favorite ever-creative production. As always send any bricks or bouquets to nicklewin@earthlink.net and check out my website at http://www.NickLewin.com -------------------------------------------- 7. Kick Start Your Marketing: Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com Now that Christmas is over and New Years is just around the corner, now is the time to sit back, set goals and work on new year's resolutions for 2008. Many of us make resolutions for a healthier lifestyle, exercise or more time with the family. These are fine goals and ones that are important to you lifestyle. However, how many of us really sit back and think about setting effective resolutions for our magic and our magic business? Now that 2008 is right around the corner, it is important that if you want to seek success in your magic or to increase your magic business, you need to work on setting resolutions that you feel can make a direct impact on your magic. Think of where you want to be in 2008 and where you feel you want to take your magic. By setting goals, you are forcing your mind and self to start planning a course of action. Any action must be started with an idea of what it is you are trying to accomplish. This is why goal setting in the beginning of the year can have such an impact to your overall marketing success. When thinking of your resolutions or goals for your magic this coming year, it is important to think of not just long term goals, but short term ones as well. A long term goal can be thought of as the end result or results that you hope to achieve by the end of 2008. These can be lofty goals but should be based upon what you did last year and what you feel you can accomplish by year's end. So ask yourself where do I want to be in December 2008 with my magic? What do I want to have happen? Now that you have set these goals, the power is in writing this down. By writing your main goals down on paper, you are setting them more in stone and causing your mind to remember them. You will also want to print out these goals and keep them in your office so that you can see them regularly as you progress throughout the year. It is a way of constantly reminding yourself of what you promised yourself you would do. Now the long term goals are only as good as the short term goals you also set for yourself. The short term goals can be considered the stepping stones to achieve the long term success. Short term goals can be thought of as monthly goals you feel you can accomplish that in turn helps you to move towards your ultimate year end resolutions. The short term goals help you to see that you are making progress. As you make progress and achieve these short term goals, you are building in your mind a success-minded habit. The more you achieve these goals, the easier it becomes. However, I must say that before you can achieve any success in 2008, you simply must have 2 things. 1) a good show that you feel is a good product or service to bring out to the market place and 2) you simply must have the desire to take direct action towards your own success. Without these 2 fundamentals, any goal or resolution you set will fail miserably. Let me go into more details on each of these. Any goals you set and any success you hope to achieve will not do you any good if you do not have a good service or product to offer. A consumer is not going to come back to you if that product is simply not good. Spend the time to develop a show and service that is professional and meets the needs of the clients you work for. Now hoping that you already have a good product or service, the single best reason why people do not have as good years as they hoped is the sheer fact that many folks are not ready or willing to take action. If you want to be successful in 2008, then you must be willing to get up off the couch and take a path of direction action to get that success. No one is going to come to your door and hand you success on a platter. You simply MUST be willing to work hard at achieving the success you set for yourself. So this coming week, sit down and think about the resolutions for your magic in 2008. Think about the long term and short term goals and write these down and place them where you can see them throughout the year. Then set yourself on a path of taking action to achieve them. I hope in the next few articles to write a bit more on some marketing tips, suggestions and ideas that can make a great impact to you as you start your 2008 marketing. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. Entertaining On The Ocean #14 - Paul Romhany -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) One of the great things about working on cruise ships are the wonderful people you get to meet. One such performer is Andrew Robley, an English singer who is always kept busy both on land and at sea with his highly entertaining shows. I just received this amazing email from Andrew and wanted to share it with members of Magic New Zealand, because as I'm sure, many cruise ship entertainers will relate to some of what Andrew has gone through this year. Apart from that, this makes excellent reading and will certainly put a smile on your face. Be sure to visit www.magicmasterclass.com and www.hocus-pocus.com for my latest products. I have some very exciting news for the launch of new products for 2008 which will open up some of my earlier releases to the magic community worldwide. Well, my chestnuts are roasting by an open fire (I think that is the cause of my hot flashes!) anyway..... it's that time again! Time to cast aside your crutches, unclip your corset and toss off your trusses and sit down to read another epistle of drivel from me! I hope that you've had a wonderful year and that this letter finds you in good health. As usual I've been very lucky to have a very busy year traveling all over the world experiencing things that, well, to be honest, would have some people running for the hills!! I left you last Christmas in South America and it was an especially manic trip as I left the ship on December 28th in Punta Arenas en route to St Lucia. Despite a few plane changes it should have been straight forward, but this being me you don't expect that! I was supposed to be met by the ship's agent to take me to the airport, but he never turned up so I had to look for a cab in this rather dodgy area of the town. I found someone to take me but he wouldn't take anything but local currency which amazingly I didn't have. I had to go and find a cash machine which of course I couldn't find and so it was suggested that I go to a local supermarket to use theirs. So I left all my worldly goods with this stranger and went off in pursuit of a shop. When I got there, they said I had to buy something first before using the machine, sadly there wasn't much in there, so I grabbed the first thing I had heard of, which was of all things, a tin of vegetable soup! They then let me use their machine and then got back to the cab driver who amazingly hadn't run away with all my cases, and we set off for the airport. I got checked in and went through customs who asked me if I had anything to declare, I said I hadn't, so they said I will ask you again, and again I said No. He said do you realise it is an offence to smuggle fruit and vegetables and animal products and I said Yes I knew. So he said in that case I will have to ask you to come into this side room. So they took me into this side room where they asked me the same questions again and AGAIN I said I had nothing to declare, so the customs officer said, well what do you have to say about this, and produced.... THE TIN OF VEGETABLE SOUP!!!!!!!!!!!! Eventually they accepted my explanation (I think they thought I was mental) and they let me join the flight. We then took off and I got off only to find that the plane had TWO stops and I had got off at the wrong one and had to then re-embark the plane to the amusement of the passengers sitting next to me! Eventually after two more flights I got to St Lucia and straight into a rehearsal for my New Years Eve Show........ there's No Business Like Show Business!!!! So that was just the start of the year, so it set a precedence of what was to come. I spent the rest of January in America and in February EVENTUALLY flew to Mombassa - due to a freak snow storm in the UK. Had to overnight in a hotel in Nairobi which had armed guards on each floor which really didn't fill you with confidence for a restful night! On arrival in Mombassa we took off on a safari with a dozen other jeeps but of course only ONE got in trouble.......I wonder who???? It was so dry that the ground was like sand and the jeep got stuck in it so we were all ushered to get out and push, ...in the middle of the jungle.... full of lions, tigers, elephants and rhino's. Believe me, it was the quickest push in history! Unfortunately for me I was behind the spinning wheel that threw up tons of red sand, and when it stopped, I looked like one of the bloody pyramids!! In March I flew to Manilla to sing for the Phillipino's who are just such wonderful people. The orchestra leader kept calling me Brad Pitt while I was there, of course I was flattered, (despite his VERY bad eyesight) until it was pronounced Burat Pitt, and it means................... BIG DICK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ...well, better than nothing I suppose! Next was Singapore, then to San Francisco which is one of the most wonderful places in the world and I was made to feel so welcome. April saw me sailing from Dubai to Cairo and in the cab to the airport this Egyptian driver asked me if I was a singer.... I said Yes. He said, You are very handsome..., not being one to argue, I agreed! He then said, "I have a good idea, you should come and sing here, buy a house, I will drive my cab all day, you will cook my dinner, and we will live together in the house like man and wife" "As man and wife", I said. "Yes", he said. I said, "Well you can cook your own bloody dinner then"......... HOW RUDE! May was spent in the sunny Mediterranean and in June I recorded my 8th album called "From The Heart", which is doing very nicely thank you! In July I had a fabulous sell-out concert with "my" Brass Band, and took off for St Petersburg where Legionnaires Disease was the gift that you DIDN'T want to go home with, and in August worked in Monte Carlo and round the exquisite South Of France.... what a great job it is! In September I travelled through the Corinth Canal where we hit a rock & it smashed the ships propellor & we had to be flown home, just in time to fly out to Rome to join my Australian friends as I sang my way round Italy. In October I was still in Rome & needed some gel shine for my hair. As I can't read foreign I trusted the guy in the shop to assure me the stuff I bought was correct. I piled it on my hair which then glowed like kryptonite & when I inquired, the "gel" was translated as .... VARNISH... FOR DULL WOOD!!!!! It cost me a fortune at the hairdressers to have it all cut out! November saw me working in the Caribbean & a day after that flying to Rio De Janeiro. I went to a museum there and got mixed up with the wrong group & ended up in an hour long meeting of the followers of the Church of Scientology! They were trying to find each other..... I wish someone had tried to find me, I only got out thanks to a toilet break! As another December arrives I was the star cabaret for the British Music Hall Society in London and then was "thrilled" to do a week of Christmas Concerts at the Brick Lane Theatre also in London, before sailing off to the Canary Islands for Christmas. So, this New Years Eve, as I sing Auld Lang Syne in Madeira with the fireworks cascading behind me, I'll raise a glass of fizzy stuff and thank you for your friendship again this year, which Believe me, is greatly appreciated. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante) (UK ex-pat Kiwi) The Amazing 'ORCHANTÉ' Saga January - TUESDAY 1st - 2008 'HAPPY NEW YEAR'! WHOOSH! Another year has shot past at what seems the speed of light! In a week or so the Christmas tree, ornaments, lights etc will come down - to be carefully packed away and forgotten for another eleven months. The trouble is, those eleven months are whizzing past so quickly these days, that I am threatening to leave everything in situ'! It takes at least two hours to pack it all up, and around three hours to get all the stuff down from the loft to set it up - again. Apart from that, it looks fabulous so, why not make every day feel like its Christmas! Sounds sensible to me; we do have a lovely garden that is quite beautiful in the summer, and a hellava a lot of indoor house plants - the tree and decorations would be an extension of that. Veronica reckons that I already think every day is Xmas, and that she is Mrs Claus!!! Various family members, and friends in New Zealand and Australia have been doing there damnedest to make us feel bad, by crowing about the great weather they are having, knowing full well that here in the U.K. it is winter time. Several friends from Sydney NSW, and up on Queensland's Gold Coast, as well as Brisbane, Australia, were complaining about how hot it is, but lovin' it all the same.  I do remember the scorching, sweltering temperatures In Sydney; 90 degrees plus in the shade, and 100% humidity! Now that sure does drain your energy. I can recall cutting the lawn at our home in North Ryde, a suburb of Sydney - 10 minutes outside with the lawnmower and twenty minutes inside with the air-conditioning going full blast, then under the shower, trying to cool off, and then back out again. it was murder! Once again, this past year has been one of many sorrows, with the passing of several friends, many of whom are now performing on that 'BIG STAGE IN THE SKY'; There's one helluva show goin' on up there'!
