I.B.M. - S.A.M. Combined Convention Update ----------------- Message from Jack White (US) This month you can save $100 on your I.B.M. - S.A.M. Combined Convention Registration! A very important reminder about the I.B.M. - S.A.M. Combined Convention set for July 21st to the 26th in Louisville, Kentucky, the cost of registration will go up $100.00 on January 1st, 2008. John & Virginia Apperson, convention registrars are very busy these days processing registration applications from both I.B.M. and S.A.M. members who want to save $100 by registering before the new rate of $495.00 goes into effect on January 1st 2008. You can register online at IBMSAM2008@appsmagic.com or by calling 618-451-9749. They will accept your check, or Master or Visa Cards. If you register this month the cost of this once in a lifetime magic event will be $395.00. This six-day convention is being put together by the two largest magic organizations in the world, the International Brotherhood of Magicians, and the Society of American Magicians. The convention committee now believes as many as 2000 people may attend this event. If you procrastinate and hold off making your reservation it will cost you more in registration fees and you may not be able to book a room at the beautiful Galt House Hotel, headquarters for this exciting convention. There are 600 traditional rooms for single and double occupancy at $99 a night. There are 300 Executive Suites at $124 a night. So that no one is disappointed, book your hotel rooms now and register for the convention before the end of the year and save $100. The combined convention committee has been working for more than a year on the plans for this spectacular magic event. Last month in these pages I told you about the Super Contests that will be produced for both close-up and stage performers with $10,000 in prize money and that much again in theatrical bookings for the winners in venues around the world. These contests are attracting some of the best magic performers from the four corners of the earth. By-the-way, the contest registration has just been extended to June 1, 2008. For more information on being a contestant see the November issue of this magazine or go to the combined convention Website at: IBMSAM2008.com. Committee Co-Chairmen, Brad Jacobs and Roger Miller both decided early on in the planning stages that a special evening for those attending the combined convention was necessary. They decided a gala banquet that would include a gourmet dinner and a cabaret show was in order and that the cost of the evening would be included in the registration price, so that each person attending can enjoy this unique evening of dining and entertainment. At a recent meeting at the Galt House in Kentucky, Christy Henson, who has handled many special event programs at magic conventions was given the job of planning the menu and the dinner event. Hank Moorhouse, the Artistic Director of more magic conventions than even he can remember, will produce a special cabaret show to take place after dinner at the banquet. Hank is also booking a live band to be part of the show and the band will also be on hand for dancing following dinner and the show. Christy Henson is still working out many of the complex details of the menu for this gala evening but tells us her agreement with the catering staff at the hotel will include soup, the famous Galt House Salad, followed by a pallet cleansing sorbet, followed by the entrée that will include a fillit of beef and a lobster tail with butter. To bring this gastronomic affair to a close the wait staff will parade a special flaming dessert to top off the spectacular culinary evening of dining. I remind you again, this banquet event is included in your registration at no extra cost. The hotel will also provide vegetarian dinners for non-meat eaters and those with special diet demands. You will also receive two special collectable I.B.M. - S.A.M. tokens for two free drinks for adults and two soft drinks for those who prefer non-alcoholic beverages. This is part of a special pre-banquet cocktail party to be staged with much fanfare outside the banquet room. Yet another real highlight of this Combined Convention will be "Six Never-To-Be-Repeated Lectures." Jim Steinmeyer will present "The Secret No One Tells You." Jim's lecture looks at new ways of looking at new effects and making the most out of your performances. Jim demonstrates with a number of routines all designed for maximum appearance and maximum effect. Derek Lever's lecture is titled: "The World's Greatest Magic Inventors." From his vast collection of "old magic," Derek will demonstrate rare pieces of magical apparatus by a number of inventors from around the world. Along with anecdotes about these inventors, some known and others unknown. Derek will describe and illustrate the thought process that led to their inventions. David Williamson will present; " Organic Magic - The Art of Impromptu Performance." David will attempt to explore the history and practice of unrehearsed and unprepared miracles. If he rehearses or prepares for this lecture, it will be a miracle! Don't miss this one. Eberhard Riese will talk about "The Evolution of an Act." Eberhard will work with Jeanatte Andrews, a teenage magician from Illinois, who has agreed to be Everhard's student for our convention. After her performance, Eberhard will than redirect Jeanette's act, giving a lifetime of professional advice to help Jeanette take her performance to the next level. David Kaye talks about "The First Century of Children's Magic." From each decade of the last 100 years David will choose one routine that was representative of the style of children's magic during that period. Following his lecture will be a live performance of these routines for an audience of children. Rounding out our series on never to be seen again lectures will be David Ben and Jon Racherbaumer on "Vernon and Marlo - The All Time Greats of Card Magic." David has recently written the "Dai Vernon: A Biography" which has been acclaimed as the definitive source for all things Vernon. Jon Racherbaumer grew up in Chicago and his interest in magic was mentored by Ed Marlo and Eddie Fields. In this presentation Jon will talk about his friend and teacher Ed Marlo. This my friends is just the beginning of what is shaping up to be the grandest magic convention ever staged in the United States. Don't be left out on this one, make plans today to attend the 2008, Combined I.B.M./S.A.M. Convention, in Louisville, Kentucky, July 21 to 26. This combined convention will be talked about in magic circles for years to come. Remember, get your registration in before December 31st and save $100 dollars. -------------------------------------------- 4. Annual Congress Of The Club Magico Italiano G. R. Lazio In Rome -------------------------------------------- Message from Oscar Mancini On December 8-9 2007, the XXI edition of the Magical Event Trofeo Arsenio will take place in Rome (Italy). It includes three lectures (by the FISM price - winning Artists Topas and Cyril Harvey and the MacMillan prized Artist Preverino), a Close-Up Contest and Dealer Show. Two Recordings Interesting For Mentalists ----------------- Message from Chris Wasshuber Lybrary.com uncovered two rare recordings by two unique mentalists: Dunninger and Al Mann. The first one is a recording, wonderfully introduced by Goodliffe, of Dunninger giving his only lecture ever to a group of magicians in the United States. The recording was taken on June 16th 1965 as a part of the 37th IBM convention in Des Moines Iowa. This is an opportunity to hear what one of the world's most successful magicians has to say about his art to fellow magicians: http://www.lybrary.com/dunninger-talk-p-748.html The second one is an interview of Al Mann where you hear Al Mann describe how he first became involved with magic. He details some of his experiences and early influences and describes an effect which is seldom seen today - reading a message in the dark: http://www.lybrary.com/mann-mentalism-p-678.html -------------------------------------------- 6. Remarkable Magic #32 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Remarkable Magic. Robert Lansing Twists The Aces. Old timers at the Magic Castle will remember the name Robert Lansing as an early member who was a close friend of Dai Vernon. His portrait is on the wall in the close-up gallery or it was the last time I looked. Many more people will be familiar with Robert as a top-notch dramatic movie and TV actor. He was also a dear friend of my close friend Michael Sloan the television writer and producer. Sloan wrote in a part for Lansing in his television series 'The Equalizer.' Lansing was also featured in Michael's later television series 'Kung Fu: the legend continues' and that is when this story takes place. I had enjoyed Bob Lansing's company on several occasions and being entertained and delighted by his stories about Vernon and the early days of the Castle. Towards the end of the 'Kung Fu: the legend continues' series it became obvious that Lansing's health was going to require him to retire and it was about then that I met Bob for the last time. One of Lansing's regrets was that he had never performed any pure sleight of hand on film. Michael decided to write a special episode for Bob in which he would perform a trick and furthermore he decided to air it with no cuts or breaks in the magical action. This kind of continuity is very rare in episodic television. Lansing decided to perform 'Twisting The Aces' which had been taught to him by Vernon himself. Michael Sloan wrote a part into the episode for me so that I could be at hand to keep things running smoothly. I arrived in Toronto to film the episode and started working with Robert on perfecting his 'Twisting' routine. He actually performed the routine extremely well but was very nervous about performing it in front of an unblinking camera. His nervousness took the form of thinking his hands were to dry too correctly handle the cards. It kept causing him to break of the routine in mid-flow. The closer we came to shooting the scene the dryer Bob's hands became. I had to resort to a little white lie in order allow Bob to perform the routine as well as I knew he could. I had brought a small container of 'Burt's Bee Wax Lotion' in order to protect my lips from chapping and decided to use it in a different manner. I reminded Bob that Dai Vernon often used a special lotion on his hands before performing. With a flourish I produced the little container of Burt's bee wax and mentally crossing my fingers I told Lansing that this was the very same lotion. Well, the moment Bob Lansing put that lotion on his hands his performance was perfect and we both heaved a sigh of relief. We shot the scene several days later and it proved to be a huge success as Michael filmed his valentine to Bob performing his tribute to the professor. The title of the episode was 'Mr. Magic' and it can still be seen in re-runs. I was proud to have been a part of it. It was an honor and a joy to work with Robert Lansing and he is a very special addition to my list of 'Meetings With Remarkable Magicians.' I actually have the full footage from 'the dailies' somewhere in my video archives (OK the pile of huge cardboard boxes in my cupboard!) and one day will upload them to my website. As always send any bricks or bouquets to nicklewin1@mac.com and check out my website at www.nicklewin.com -------------------------------------------- 7. A Great New Tool For Creativity - by Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) As many of you know, I have written a lot lately on creativity and the need for magicians to take action towards learning to be more creative thinkers of the magic we perform. We all own more magic then we need. We really do not need to buy more magic. What we do need is the ability to be more creative with the magic we already have. An idea I have expressed in the past is to keep what I refer to as a "Creativity Journal". This is a concept derived from my art school days and I continue to do it to this day. It is an easy idea and one that is not new at all. However, I find it is new to a lot of magicians. The concept is to simply carry with you and keep with you a blank journal from which you can write down any and all creative thoughts and ideas. The goal is "free thinking". In free thinking there are no boundaries and there are no rules. You break down the barriers that hold you back. Any idea is a good idea and that needs to be written down by you. It has often been said that the reason you write thoughts down is that there is power in the process. When you write ideas in your creativity journals, you are basically planting a seed in your mind. This seed can grow. It tells the mind and teaches it that it is OK to open the mind up to receiving these kinds of creative thought. Like any exercise, the more you do, the better you get and the stronger you become. Think of the creativity journal as an exercise of the mind. It builds up the mind and makes it stronger. But what I have found lately is a new tool that brings the creativity journal to a new level and makes it even easier to be creative and to retain those creative thoughts. There is a free website out there online called www.jott.com. It is simply a wonderful tool I have been using a lot lately in the past few months. Now before I proceed to tell you about it, please keep in mind that I am not affiliated in any way with the website nor do I get any compensation from them. It is just a very useful tool I have found that works for me and I wanted to share with you the readers. Jott.com is a website that allows you to have the ability to send emails or text messages to yourself or anyone you want simply with the power of your own voice. The website is 100% free and very easy to set up initially. It takes only a matter of 5 minutes to set it up and away you go. You can now be on the road at a show or anywhere and call the Jott number. It will ask you who you want to Jott and you can freely state any name set up in your database. If you Jott yourself then you just talk for up to 45 seconds of anything you want. When you are done, Jott will send your voice message and transcribe it as text and send that text to your email address or even a text message on your cell phone. When you get home, you will have an email waiting for you that is everything you said in the phone but in a written format for you to print out or to save in your creativity journal. It is just that easy. You have the ability to Jott messages to anyone email you want. This becomes a very powerful free tool if you think about it. Now I can be anywhere and if a creative idea comes to my mind, I can immediately send a Jott message to my email. When I get home it will be there waiting for me and I will have it all in a written format I can use. I no longer have to search for paper or try and recall an idea when I get home. I can do it the moment the idea comes to me. Another way I use Jott is after a show is over. When I am in the truck I can send a Jott message home and tell about the show, how it went over, what tricks I performed and any notes I might want to have. I can do this while it is all fresh in my memory. It is a very powerful tool for any creative thinker and I hope you might give it a try. I have been using it for a few months now and have really found the power in it to broaden my creativity and to help me in the process. Let me know how it works for you. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. If you also would like more information on www.jott.com, please send me an email and I will be sure to assist you in any way that I can. Entertaining On The Ocean #11 - Paul Romhany -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) This week Natalie and I have been relaxing in the UK with my brother and his family. After several months on a cruise ship you really do appreciate the small things in life. You look forward to making your toast, brewing your own coffee and not having to look at your watch to make sure you make it back to the ship on time. During our visit here we went to see Mary Poppins at the West End. A truly amazing production with a great range on magic effects including an appearing Hat Stand which was invented by Wayne Rogers (Auckland, New Zealand). Recently while watching a Chris Angel MindFreak special it was great to see Wayne's other products including appearing ladder, broom and shovel. This week I would like to introduce one of the most amazing acts I have ever had the pleasure of working with on any ship, Soul Mystique. They have taken the art of quick change to levels I have never seen before. I think this is partly due to the fact that they are champion dancers and very dedicated to the art form. To cap it all off they are very lovely people and very well respected in the business. The art of quick change costume transformation is a very specialised branch of magic that dates back as far as the 15th century. Also known as proteanism, or meta-morphing - it is the art of changing costumes at lighting speed in front of an audience within seconds - leaving no trace of how, when, and where each set of clothes disappear each time. Due to its rareness, complexity and lengthy time in preparation for a quick change show, it is one of the most exclusive and impressive illusion there is in theatre. Today, traditional quick change is sporadically performed throughout the world. There are only a handful of artists who have dedicated themselves fully to this art, and very few who are internationally acclaimed performers. Those lucky enough to witness this magical illusion, will no doubt agree that it is a mesmerizing, fascinating, and mind-boggling spectacle. Gavin & Lydia are Latin-American & Ballroom Dance Sport professionals. Trained in the United Kingdom & based in Brisbane, they have represented Australia together on the competitive Dance Sport circuit since 1996. Their titles started at home as undefeated State Latin-American Dance Champions, followed by success as Paris, Belgium, & Greater London Latin-American Dance Champions. Their first step into theatre began in year 2000, when Producers of the award winning Irish dance extravaganza "Spirit of the Dance" spotted them at a training session at Pineapple Dance Studios in London, and asked them to star as headliners in their new production "One World". They have not looked back from stage shows since, and are now living their passion in producing, choreographing, and performing all over the globe. Their credentials as elite athletes and former coaches to some of Australia's finest dancers have led them to write and produce Australia's first Latin-American dance instructional media "Dance with me" - filmed in the heart of Australia's Gold Coast and now sold to over 15 countries worldwide. They recently were finalists in Australia's Got Talent TV show which catapulted them to stardom, they have also made a few rare appearances at magic conventions around the world. This is one act that I can watch over and over again and always get a thrill from their performances. You can visit their website at www.soulmystique.com or watch their performances on YouTube. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 27 Back on page 23, I managed to sidetrack myself (you may have noticed that I have a tendency to do this at times), re our cockatoos. I thought that I might ruffle the feathers again, and try to wrap it up - the story that is. If you remember, we had the sulphur-crested cockatoo, 'B B B' - 'Big Bastard Bird', then there was 'Little Bird', more commonly known as a Little, or Short Billed Corella. Then 'Beauregarde' joined our family. He was a 'Long Billed' Corella, also known as the 'Slender Billed' cockatoo and the 'Dampier' cockatoo. In the wild, Long Billed corellas have a 'sentinel' warning system like that of the Sulphur-crested cockatoos. While the main flock is feeding on the ground, a few birds remain in the trees above, on the lookout for danger. Now that is intelligence! This wacky looking cockatoo (because of their long curving beak), makes a wonderful pet, being docile, intelligent, and amusing, and is perhaps the best talker among Australian parrots. It has one exasperating fault, as we quickly discovered - they are extremely destructive to woodwork. Most parrots and cockatoos are, but this particular species, including the 'Short Billed' cockatoo, are bloody demons; I was forever patching and rebuilding windowsills that had been chewed to pieces! I must have spent a small fortune on wood putty etc. Aaaah, the things we put up with for the love of our 'kids', which, I suppose, they were. Somewhere along the line, we 'acquired' another Sulphur Crested cockatoo, whose name escapes me now; then along came 'Jackie'; he was a 'Galah' - also known as the 'Roseate' or 'Rose-breasted' cockatoo. As with 'Little Bird', Jackie was just a baby - a tiny bundle of fluff when we bought him. Veronica played 'mother' and handfed him, with a specially formulated mushy mix for very young birds. It was, by necessity, a dedicated job - feeding time around every three hours! I have some wonderful video footage of Veronica feeding Jackie, taken with my semi-professional Betamax video camera. (Stolen - because of a burglary, another story I will relate sometime). Apart from budgerigars, Galahs are probably the most common bird seen in the Australian wilds. They are very distinctive with their back, wings, rump, face, and under tail-feathers grey, contrasting strongly with their cheeks, throat, breast, and all of the under-parts - which are a gorgeous, deep rose-red. When you see a huge flock of them flying, as we often did while travelling to various gigs out in the country, it was quite a dazzling sight, watching as they twisted and turned - performing their aerial acrobatics. Unfortunately, farmers consider them a pest, trapping and shooting them in the thousands - protecting their crops, which the birds delight in feeding on. I can understand the farmer's dilemma, but it was still heartbreaking to watch, whenever the TV news broadcast it during the season. Galahs are fun-loving birds, and get up to some crazy antics, both in the wild and as pets. One of their favourite 'tricks' is to sit on power and telephone lines and, while gripping the line with their claws, rapidly turn continuous summersaults. Power lines, are a particularly dangerous spot to 'play' this amusing game. It often results in an electrifying and shocking finale! Australians have a common saying when referring to somebody who has done something stupid or silly: ".Bloody stupid Galah"! 'Tutu' was our next acquisition. He was a 'Peach Face', African Love Bird. Although not an Australian species, they are, non-the less, a very popular bird/pet in that country. He also, was handfed. Although only a tiny bird, Tutu feared nothing, no matter the size, and he had one hell of a powerful bite! They have the shocking habit of biting the feet off other birds! And they rarely miss! Tutu would take on anything that came near him, including the dogs. We had a toy poodle, 'Misky', and 'Shannon' a standard poodle; she was huge. That didn't stop Tutu from taking swipes at her as she walked past. In fact, Shannon would deliberately take pretend bites at Tutu, just for fun; if she'd wanted, she could have swallowed Tutu down in a flash, and the bird would not have touched the sides on the way down. Did that stop him, did it hell! As far as Tutu was concerned, the bigger they were, the harder he would bite, and the harder they'd fall! Then we had two Siamese cats, well one to start with - 'Sheba', then much later on, her son 'Spook-Easy' joined the family. Must tell you how Sheba came into our lives. Back in 'The Good Old Days' one of my best mates was Robert Gennari. As you have no doubt guessed from his surname, Robert is Italian, and he became one of New Zealand's most popular singers. (Oh No, is this another diversion coming up? I'm afraid so.) -------------------------------------------- 13.
