Unbelievable -- Magic Castle Up For Sale! -------------------------------------------- Message from Larry Wright (US) Famous Piece of Hollywood Up for Sale By Daisy Nguyen, Associated Press Writer Saturday, April 7, 2007 (04-07) 12:26 PDT Los Angeles, (AP) - A famous piece of Hollywood is up for sale. The owners of the Magic Castle and the Japanese mansion that houses the Yamashiro restaurant are looking for someone interested in acquiring the landmarks and the surrounding 10-acre hilltop property. The buyer would get a valuable piece of land located just above Grauman's Chinese Theatre, the Hollywood Walk of Fame and other tourist attractions. Part of the property can be developed, but the buyer must preserve the nearly century-old Magic Castle and Yamashiro because they are designated historic landmarks, said Andy Ulloa, a part owner of the property. "We're looking for a buyer who will make sure the integrity of the property remains," Ulloa said. He said other owners of the property, including descendants of developer Thomas O. Glover, decided to sell it after more than 60 years of ownership. "There's no asking price, the owners want to see what kind of offers will come their way," he said. Glover bought Yamashiro in 1948 for $150,000 when the mansion - originally built to resemble a mountaintop palace near Kyoto, Japan - fell into disrepair, Ulloa said. The ornate structure and its distinct Japanese architecture had been vandalized during World War II when anti-Japanese sentiment was high. Glover restored the home and its sprawling Japanese garden and pagoda, and his son later turned the main mansion into a restaurant, Ulloa said. Glover also bought a nearby mansion that resembles a French chateau and became the headquarters of the Academy of Magical Arts. The structure also is home of the Magic Castle Hotel and a restaurant that features magic shows. "The business is doing well," Ulloa said. "If someone sees the property for how well it's doing, we're confident we'll stay in place for a long time." http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2007/04/07/financial/f012619D47.DTL -------------------------------------------- 3. The Head Forker aka OBIE OBRIEN -------------------------------------------- 5. 'Remarkable Magic' #2 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from - Nick Lewin (US) Remarkable Magic #2 Fogel dodges the bullet. I think that the greatest showman that I have witnessed performing magic was Maurice Fogel. Maurice or to give him his correct name 'The Amazing Fogel' was a giant in the world of mentalism and magic. Maybe not in stature, but definitely as a performer, Fogel towered above all but a handful of magicians. I first saw Maurice perform in England at the Conway Hall. Later on I got to meet him, work with him and enjoy his lively company as a houseguest. One day I suddenly realized we had become friends and I felt very proud. He taught me a great deal. If I had to pick the one piece of magic that Maurice performed that displayed his formidable powers as a showman it would be his bullet catch routine. He turned it into an exercise in showmanship. In typical Fogel style, Maurice didn't perform the bullet catch like any other performer. To begin with he didn't actually catch the bullet between his teeth or in a plate. He very astutely came up with a plan to take a dramatic effect and make it even more theatrical. Fogel realized that the key to the trick was the danger involved in watching a performer risk his life by having a gun aimed at him and then fired. Maurice upped the odds by using six rifles in his routine. Five rifles contained genuine bullets and one had no bullet in it. The rifles were mixed up and one of them was chosen at random (Yeah, in a magic act!) and this rifle was to be fired directly at Fogel's heart. The remaining rifles were aimed at plates on a rack behind Maurice. Catch the subtlety there because the finale (Or should I say Prestige--lol) of the effect consisted of an earsplitting volley of rifle fire and the destruction of 5 plates clattering onto the stage. Best of all was the way Maurice sold the trick to his audience. Once the effect was set up and the audience was ready to see whether he would survive the ordeal was when the genius of Fogel the showman took over. Just as the rifles were aimed at Fogel and the tension was mounting to a high pitch, he would abruptly stop the action and step forward to address the audience. "Ladies and gentlemen" he would say, "It occurs to me that in a few moments I may be lying dead or dying on the floor, unable to hear your reaction. Would it be presumptuous of me to ask to hear your applause now?" Needless to say the audience responded with a wild round of applause. "Thank You" said Fogel, "Then if that was your applause for a brave and gallant looser, may I assume that if I should succeed then the applause would be twice as loud!" No sooner had the applause and laughter died down before Fogel returned to the original drama and the firearms were re-aimed at him. After a short countdown the rifles roared into life, plates crashed to the ground and Fogel staggered! He just staggered just long enough to cause the more sensitive spectators to gasp before Maurice recovered and took his applause. Needless to say when the audience realized that Fogel was unharmed their applause raised the roof. That was the kind of brilliant showmanship that put Maurice in a league of his own. No wonder he was known as the Amazing Fogel! Creativity: Keeping an Idea Journal - by Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from By Kyle Peron (US) E-Mail: Magic4u02@aol.com I thought this week I would continue with my discussion on creativity and how you can train yourself to be more creative. I also wanted to talk about how you can also make the magic that you do creative in return. Creativity to me is something that I have always been fascinated with. Part of this is because I am an artist and graphic designer by trade. I have found that many magicians are not as creative as they can be. Part of the reason for this lies in the simple fact that thinking creatively takes work. It is not something that just happens. You have to work at it in order to make it work for you. Creativity to me is like a muscle in your body. You have to stretch and learn to exercise that muscle if you want that muscle to grow and remain healthy. The more you work an exercise the muscle, the easier it is for you to do certain things with it. So for me creativity and learning to think in a creative way starts with developing a process that trains you to be creative and pushes you to exercise your creativity on a daily basis. It has been said that it takes about 30 days of constantly doing something to make something a habit. Wouldn't it be great if you can develop and learn a way to be creative with your magic so that it becomes a habit for you? Wouldn't it be wonderful if you had a way to train your brain to always thinking in creative terms? What power could that be and how could that affect your magic? Well there is a way that I would like to share with all of you that is a process I developed for my art and carried it over to my magic. It is a direct way to teach you and train yourself to being creative. It is a way in which you train your brain through a daily exercise in creativity. By doing so you develop good habits and through these habits your creative muscle grows ten-fold. The process is what is often referred to as an "Idea Journal". What is it you ask? Good question. Allow me to dive a bit into more detail for you. In its simplest of form, an idea journal occurs anytime you put any thought down on paper. It is the mere process of putting an idea to paper that really starts to train your brain to thinking in creative terms. As you place this idea on the paper, your brain is busy going through the process so the ideas remain in the brain longer. It is exercising the brain to think creatively by giving it something to do. Now it makes no difference whether it's written down with a notepad, journal or a piece of paper. The power is in the mere act of doing. The effect and end results will always be the same for you. The idea of recording your ideas and your thoughts is a very powerful one. Every single one of us has the ability to be creative and to think in creative terms. How many of you wake up from a dream and really see the dream and the images in the dream so vividly? Probably many of you do or have from time to time. Creativity is much like this. We get ideas and ideas and creative thought are always flowing through our minds. The problem is that we do not capture these ideas when they occur. By not capturing them, we allow our mind to forget them. The process of actually stopping and writing that thought down starts to train our brain to keep those thoughts alive. It tells our mind that those ideas need to be remembered. Writing these thoughts down, helps start this process of being a better creative thinker. So what you need to do is take a pad of paper, a note pad or a journal and keep them near your bed or in your car or at work. Keep them where you can have access to them no matter where you are. The idea is that when a creative thought enters your mind, stop and write that thought down. Do not worry yourself over how good the thought is or can it be achieved or that it may be silly. All of that does not matter. Many folks hinder their own creativity because they do not allow their mind to free think. Free thinking basically means you are not passing judgment on the ideas that you are coming up with. In this idea journal you are not limiting yourself at all. Any ideas and any creative thoughts can and should be written down in your journal. Get yourself into the habit of writing down any idea no matter where it comes from. It could be something you saw on a walk in the woods that sparked an idea. It could be a song you heard that you thought was just really great. It could and can be anything at all. You will start to realize that creative ideas can come from anywhere and any source and at any time. Open your mind to receiving them. The idea journal helps you to not forget about them. Through the act of writing the thoughts down you are really training your mind to think better. You are exercising your creativity muscle and telling it to continue to do what it does. Never ever dismiss any ideas. Hopefully by now you can start to see the problem with dismissing your creative thoughts. As we grow in confidence through this process, what we thought was once impossible to come up with before suddenly appears in the journal and appears achievable to you. The beauty of this process is that the more you do it the better your creativity becomes. You will find that the more you practice this idea journal process, the more creativity becomes easier for you. Creative thinking starts to become a habit for you because you have trained your mind to receiving these ideas freely. So here is what I suggest you do. from here on out take the time to stop and write down all your creative ideas in your journal no matter how silly they may seem to you at the time. You will find that some of your best ideas for acts, routines, patter or even full shows will come from the very ideas you may have written down months prior. The beauty of an idea journal is that you can go back to it and reference it at any time you want. Some of the best and most creative magic comes from ideas you may have in the journal. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. IBM Convention Info -------------------------------------------- Message from Mel Kientz Registrations Rates for the IBM Convention Go Up After June Well, it's interesting to see all of the emails and phone calls flying behind the scenes in order to make a convention like ours come together. Oh sure, it may look seamless and elegant when you arrive in Reno at the end of June, but in the months leading up to the events -- strange things are happening. Midnight phone calls, emails written in German, fingernails bitten to the quick, the odd magician or two swearing he has a new and novel way of performing a double lift (got any lecture space left?) And what do you mean that the Dealer Room has to close at 6:00pm on Saturday? Meanwhile, Dale Salwak has booked his final open spot for talent and Mike Stratman is desperately trying to cram them into a schedule that includes four major gala shows, fourteen lecture events, spouse events, youth events and assorted other planned magical madness - all for a paltry $175  but if you wait too long that price is going to go up - I warned you! So call the family and tell them you are booking a vacation to America's Adventure City - Reno -- and bring the family along The list of performers is awesome Trevor Lewis, Tony Chapek, Rich Bloch, Ali Bongo, Murray Hatfield & Teresa, Hikari, Chuck Jones & Co., Mark Merchant, Antje Pode, Terry Seabrooke, Yugi Yasuda, Arthur Trace, Michael Close, Jon Armstrong, Henry Evans, Pattrick Przysiecki, Boris Wild, William Jarvis, Daryl, Bill Pitts & Ruth, Dondrake, Aldo & Rachel Colombini, Mark Kalin & Jinger and a special stage presentation "In the Spirit of Blackstone, 100 Years of Magic History". All this for $175  for IBM Members? This is really AMAZING! Need a Few Bucks. Enter the IBM Contests Magicians from around the globe will gather in Reno, Nevada this year to take part in this year's I.B.M. Gold Medal Stage Contest, and I.B.M. Gold Cups Close-up Contest. Every year at the I.B.M. Annual Convention, our assembled organization conducts contests in Close-up Magic and Stage Magic, and this year the stakes have been raised... This year, the I.B.M. Board of Trustees decided to increase the prize money for two of the most prestigious awards in all of magic. The prize amount for the "Gold Medal International Award of Excellence in Stage Performance" was nearly doubled to $5,000. The amount for the "Gold Cups International Award of Excellence in Close-up Performance" more than tripled, also to $5,000. There are a many more reasons to enter these outstanding Contests than just money. The camaraderie that develops backstage and in the "green room" is unbelievable. Friendships and professional contacts develop and last a lifetime. At the Judges' Critique Session, contestants receive valuable face-to-face feedback regarding their performance from some of the most knowledgeable and experienced people in the industry. And the opportunity to perform before the most discerning audience in all of magic is simply priceless. Of course, the prize money can be a big incentive. A $10,000 purse is difficult to ignore. If you want it, you've got to come and take it. (We don't just give it away.) Reno's Own Mark Kalin and Jinger to Appear at the 2007 IBM Convention Mark and Jinger have been working on a Magic Lecture and we have it first at our International Convention. This should be worth the price of the entire convention but there's more. You have read about their Magic Underground in all of the magic publications and you experienced this amazing wonder show if you were with us in 2005. We have asked Kalin & Jinger if they would add a special edition late night show just for us. Here are the details. This Special Magic Underground Show will be limited to 200 people on Wednesday night, June 27th from 11:00pm to 12:30am - right through the bewitching hour. There will be an extra charge for this limited event ($15 per person which includes transportation from the hotel to Magic Underground and back). Seats will be reserved on a first come, first served basis. You can get on the list by calling 775-324-6007. Their regular Magic Underground show will be running at the same time as the convention and if you find that this special edition is sold out, they have graciously priced their other shows at the same $15 price for IBM Registrants. Spouse Events Christie Henson has been busy putting together our spouse events. Already on the schedule is a trip to Virginia City. There is a $5 reservation fee so that she knows how to order the transportation. You can pick-up this reservation for the off-property event when you pick-up your registration packet on the first day. Seating will be limited so don't let this skip by when you arrive. Earlier in the convention she has added something special involving our First Lady, Manya Casto and Jep Hostetler has a presentation that will be pure JOY. On alternate Sundays I host of the show Magic With A Message on www.magicbroadcast.com . I am also one of the five judges for this BIG BOOK Writing Contest.) The contest will result in the production of a book written by our top ten winners. I will edit it and contribute some routines as well. The theme of the book will be magic routines that have a moral value or pitch a wholesome product or service through magic by association, comparison, metaphor, simile, etcetera. The book will be sold via Magic City as a fund raiser for Magic Broadcast operating expenses Here are the particulars: The theme of the book will follow the title and theme of the Magic Broadcast show, Magic With A Message. All entries will present a routine for a trick or series of tricks in a routine that conveys a positive and truthful message about a value, concept, moral, religious teaching, or product or service, or which warns against some danger the audience can choose to avoid (smoking, illegal drugs, playing with matches, whatever is appropriate for the designated audience for whom they choose to write). In other words it must be, MAGIC WITH A MESSAGE, not just a cute story or fairy-tale without educational motivational value (unless the tale has a clear moral, etc.; something the audience will know how to react to and do something about). Message magic is all about persuasion at one level or another. The suggested average length of each entry has been set at about two pages up to a maximum of four type written standard 8 1/2 by 11 pages including any illustrations. All ten winners will have their work polished, edited, and printed in the book to be published by Magic City. I will act as a contributing editor, but my work will not be eligible to win since I am both the show host and one of the five judges. The contest judges are Steve Varro (owner of Doc Haley Gospel Magic and past president of the Fellowship of Christian Magicians International), Major Ed Jarvis (current FCM president), Steve Harmer (full time school show magician, lecturer, and former public school principal), Steve Johnson (of Grand Illusions and Magic Broadcast), and Ken Morrison (myself, a doctoral student and Magic Broadcast host). The contest will conclude with all entries submitted by the May first deadline. If your entry includes an original prop, and you request it, a note reserving manufacturing rights for sale will be included, but publishing rights on entries routine(s) will belong to Magic Broadcast and those who buy the book will have rights to do the routine and make for their own use any original props you disclose. There are prizes for each person who enters and complies with all the rules (originality, appropriate message magic, 4 page max, etc.). Prizes are not guaranteed for each entry, as people can enter as many routines as they like, but for each person who enters. I hope that knowing your entry will garner something nice and help keep Magic Broadcast on the air, even if you do not make the top ten, will inspire you to enter soon. Your Help Is Needed! -------------------------------------------- Message from Glenn Strange Fellow speaker/magician/educator/entertainer, John Cooper is in need of your help. John is widely known in the business for his creative approach to marketing, coaching in the family entertainment business, and teaching teachers to be better teachers. He's helped countless others through his generous sharing of his many talents. For many years John has suffered from Congestive Heart Failure (a condition where the heart cannot pump enough blood to the other organs). Last year he had a pacemaker installed to help with the condition. John and his wife are self employed in the speaking business. Due to John's condition they cannot get health insurance unless they pay astronomical premiums (which still wouldn't cover his 'pre-existing condition). The pacemaker procedure was quite a financial blow, not to mention he lost weeks of work. This month he found out that he will have to undergo open heart surgery early next month to repair a valve among other things. As you can imagine this is just going to add to their financial burden. He will be out of work for a minimum of six weeks. He needs our prayers and financial support. This operation will likely cost in excess of $100,000. Remember, he has NO health insurance. So here's how you can help. We've set up an account for you to make a donation to help cover his medical bills. NO AMOUNT IS TOO SMALL!! Here's how you can contribute. . You can mail a check, made payable to "The John Cooper Fund," to: John Cooper Fund PO Box 437 Anderson, SC 29622-0437 USA . You can also make a deposit into the account at any Regions Bank by telling them you wish to make a deposit into the "The John Cooper Fund" account in Anderson SC, USA. They will be able to look up the account information and make the deposit for you. . If you wish to wire a contribution into this account you can do so by calling Scott at Regions Bank in Anderson, SC, USA at 864-231-2950. He can help you with this type of transaction. Thanks for your prayers and contributions. Magic Show Conference In Branson, Missouri -------------------------------------------- Message from Marty Hahne Hello Magic Friends: We are really excited, because our '07 Magic Show Conference in Branson, Missouri is nearly upon us! We have a fantastic lineup this year. First is England's Ali Bongo. Ali will lecture, have an interview with Duane Laflin, and MC our Saturday show. Plus, due to the intimate nature of our conference, he'll be up close and accessible for the entire conference! Next, in case you haven't heard, the stars of last year's conference, Fukai and Kimika have decided to pay us another visit! They are performing the week before in California, so they decided to stay another week, just because they loved Branson so much last year! Then we add the one of the busiest magicians in New Zealand, Greg Britt, making a rare U.S. appearance. Greg works all types of venues, and specializes in schools. Don't miss his lecture! Now we add the great Dan Tong lecturing on Stand Up magic and Restaurant Magic, the fabulous Doug Anderson with Cruise Ship Magic and Corporate work, the ever-popular Joe Fairchild making his third visit, plus an appearance by Bill Pitts (past IBM President) and his wife Ruth, and lectures by Duane Laflin and Marty Hahne, and this conference can't be beat! BUT THERE'S MORE: we also include two big Branson shows! This year we'll go see Justin Flom's Imaginary Theater show, and Darren Romeo, the Voice of Magic. Don't forget, we also have our feedback session for 12 participants, and the Saturday night staff show, followed by our build your own Sundae bar! All this for just $135. The dates are May 3-5. Duane Laflin will have a bonus, no extra charge gospel day on May 2. For all the details, or to register, go to: www.dazzlingmagic.com. ----------------- 20. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 151 A Nostalgic Walk Down Memory Lane The heading on page 150 should have stated: 'We Prepare To Leave New Zealand.' , as it was actually seven months later (after Eric asked us to join him), before we left for Fiji, although it didn't seem like it as the time just flew by, because of the amount of work that kept us travelling to various hotels all over New Zealand, constantly voyaging back and forth between the North and South Islands, relishing the ever changing scenery of our beautiful country! The New Zealand segment of my Saga is drawing to a close, not that I won't be revisiting from time to time, as I keep remembering stories and things that I have been meaning to write about, and didn't get around to. I have decided, as the above title suggests, to go on a 'Reminiscent, Nostalgic Memory Trip', which will do great things for my heart and soul and will perhaps, be of interest to you. Browsing through my 1976 Diary, I find that the 'Last Ever' shows we performed in New Zealand was at the 'Tudor Towers' in Rotorua, from Monday 5th to Sat 10th of July 1976, and that we left just four days later, Wed.14th - for Fiji. Here then is a little of the history of Rotorua, and the Tudor Towers. Rotorua is situated about 50 miles west, inland from Whakatane, which is on the east coast of the Bay of Plenty of the north Island. Whakatane is where Veronica was brought up and, where we lived prior to departing for Fiji. Rotorua is affectionately known by the nickname of 'Rotten -rua', because of the rather whiffy, to put it mildly, 'rotten eggs' smell that pervades your nostrils in and around the city. This is due to the sulphurous geothermal activity of the region; you get used to it, and it doesn't seem to bother the hordes of tourists. This unique thermal phenomenon can most easily be observed in the Maori village of 'Whakarewarewa' (pronounced/sounds like - 'FAR CAR REWA REWA'), which is about a mile and a half south of Rotorua; it has numerous springs and three impressive geysers within a small area. In the Maori language, WH is pronounced as 'F' and A, is pronounced as 'FAR'! Whakatane, for instance, is pronounced/sounds like: FAR CAR TAR KNEE. It is rather shameful just how many New Zealanders mispronounce Maori place names; it really is an insult! The majority of the town's biggest hotels, and a large number of motels are located on, or just off Fenton Street, running north - south across the city. East of the northern end of Fenton Street is the magnificent Government Gardens (it lies directly on the shores of Lake Rotorua), which include a park and sports grounds. The most eye catching feature in Government Gardens is the - 'Tudor Towers'. Built in 1908, the old half - timbered bathhouse of Rotorua, was styled after the bathhouse of 'Bad Nauheim' in Germany. Half - timbered construction was cheaper than a stone building, which is more liable to damage in an earthquake, and there are plenty of those in the whole region. A new spa establishment opened in the1960s, called the 'Polynesian Pools', which are situated behind and to the right of the Tudor Towers. Its particular attraction is the 'Three Pools', which are supplied with water from three different springs, each with its own special thermal content and varying temperatures. Although the sulphurous waters of the pools are still regarded as useful in the treatment of arthritis and rheumatism, most visitors and locals enjoy them as a pleasant form of relaxation - guaranteed to soothe frayed nerves, relax the body and ensure a good night's sleep! Also a great place to take a 'Bird', to get her into a nice, relaxed and amorous mood, as many a kiwi bloke, or woman for that matter, will tell you! The former bathhouse (The Tudor Towers) now contains the 'Natural History Museum of Rotorua', and the City Art Gallery, including Maori Art. Upstairs is a large function room, which is where I used to entertain quite regularly. It gives me quite a strong sense of pride to think that we used to perform our show(s) amongst all that history; gives me a nice sort of a warm glow, now, thinking about it. Next, I'm going to list a string of hotels (that may 'ring a bell' for many 'Kiwi's), that we worked prior to leaving our home, New Zealand, for many - far, far too many, years. As I said at the beginning, this is a 'Nostalgic Memory Kick' for me, before I start on the Fiji / Australia segment of my saga. -------------------------------------------- 21.
