Meetings With Remarkable Magicians # 17 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) The stunningly genuine Dr. Fraud is in the house. I met Terry Nosek while I was planning a Las Vegas Celebrity Séance. I was committed to communicating through the veil and hosting the world's first Lenny Bruce séance and the idea was that Lenny would communicate right back at us. That was where Mr. Nosek came in. The venue for the séance was Bally's Resort and Casino in the heart of the Las Vegas strip. I had enlisted Ross Johnson, the most convincing mindreader in the world, to perform the séance with me. However anyone who has dabbled in the séance as aperformance piece can tell you ".it takes a village to achieve special effects in the dark." Well, OK, not an entire village but a serious undercover crew fully equipped with flashlights, and (if you've been studying 'séancemeister' Eugene) creepy luminous bird gizmos waiting in the darkened room. Terry Nosek was my undercover administrator as we did our best to scare and amuse the four hundred people in our audience. The best part of the séance was that it allowed me to get to know Terry and his wife Barbara. Almost instantly Terry became a very special friend whom I prized dearly. I suppose there might be a more generous and selfless person in the magic community than Terry Nosek but if so then I am yet to meet them. I'm not holding my breath for them to turn up either! I have been performing magic for over forty years now but I am a very private person and can count on one hand the true friendships I have made in this business. I have never found a better friend or kinder gentleman in my magical journey. Actually our first encounter was in Hank Lee's magic store in Boston. We didn't meet in person but that was when I purchased a copy of Terry's book "The Mental Magic of Sigmund Fraud." This was my perfect book; smart and clever magic that had laughs galore. Ten years later Frank Zak introduced me to Nosek in person and I began to realize how tiny a tip of the iceberg that book was when you were dealing with the delightfully devious mind of Dr. Fraud. Terry had a dry, unassuming quality that covered an amazing knowledge of magic. If I had a questions about a specific effect or routine all I needed to do was call Terry. If he didn't know the answers he would quietly do some research and before you knew it an email would arrive with detailed responses to my question. Better still the next time we'd meet he would have a manilla folder packed with detailed notes, facts and information about the topic in question. His knowledge was ocean's deep and his research immaculate. Terry Nosek was also a superb entertainer who performed for every kind of audience from full-scale corporate shows to wandering mindreading. He was also a very successful performer in Chicago's highly competitive comedy club circuit. You have to be a pretty damn funny magician to make an impact in the hermetic world of stand up comedy and Terry was just that kind of performer and got big laughs while performing strong magic. Every aspect of a routine was simplified and polished until it was exactly right. No amount of care or attention to detail was too much. Best of all he was able to take his intricate knowledge of comedy, magic and mentalism and put it into application. As modest as he was informed Terry Nosek was something very special and a credit to all that is good in magic. I miss him. Please send bricks or bouquets to nicklewin@earthlink.net -------------------------------------------- 6. FISM Accommodation Available -------------------------------------------- Message from Grant (Aust) I have a twin share room booked at the First Hotel Royal Star for FISM. If anyone is interested in sharing the room and costs please email me at: grunter22@westnet.com.au -------------------------------------------- 7. Harold Webster Passed Away -------------------------------------------- Message from Graham Etherington (Aust) It is with deep regret we have just been informed that well known Melbourne magician Harold Webster passed away at 12.30am today 4th July. Unfortunately Harold had been suffering for some considerable time. We saw him now and again as he attended the occasional lecture accompanied with his oxygen bottles. Harold gave away his trade as a butcher to become a magician, he said "The hours were better". For many years he could be seen around Melbourne at fetes and parties doing what he enjoyed. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Lynne and daughters Katie and Sue. Rest in peace Harold. Eastbourne Convention News -------------------------------------------- Message from Bob Hayden PRO to the British Ring To deliver the Jeffery Atkins Memorial Lecture is the most respected and greatest legend in the world of magic and entertainment John Calvert. Those attending the 1974 British Ring Convention in Hastings cannot fail to remember John and Tammy's performance in the Gala Show particularly the electrifying opening sequence of spectacular magic delivered at a speed faster than lighting. John has been described as an actor, a pilot, a yachtsman, and an adventurer but first and foremost as a magician and illusionist. It was after seeing Thurston's 'Wondershow of the Universe' when aged eight that inspired John to pursue a career in magic which throughout his high school and college years led him to built his act which cumulated in a huge illusion show. During the 1940's and 50's John's grace, charm and good looks took him to Hollywood where he made 40 motion pictures. He is best known for his starring role as the Falcon, a series featuring him as a magician/detective. After his film career, John began his world tour of the spectacular magical revue Magicarama, the longest running touring magic extravaganza in theatrical history taking it to a global audience in all six continents. Transporting his crew and equipment on his own planes and yachts involved John in a number of life threatening experiences including plane crashes, being lost and marooned at sea off the coast of China, out running pirates and escaping the ravages of war in Bangladesh. Now 95 years of age, John Calvert's energy and enthusiasm for performing and lecturing remains undiminished. Together with his wife Tammy, his expert assistant for more than 40 years the illustrious esteem of John Calvert grows stronger. To quote William Larsen of the Academy of Magical Arts in Hollywood 'When the final history of magic is complied one name that will be on the list of great magicians will be that of John Calvert'. It will be one of the greatest regrets of your life if you fail to be present when John Calvert delivers his lecture. Trade Show Magic. This is a division of magic that has rarely been featured at our Convention. In 2003 Michael Bailey in his Jeffery Atkins Memorial Lecture gave a comprehensive insight into this branch of magic. This is being supplemented this year when a lecture/workshop will be given by two of America's most successful tradeshow performers, Tim Conover and Seth Kramer. In this unique first time tradeshow workshop both performers commence with their prospective tradeshow 'pitches' followed by a 45-minute lecture with time for a Questions & Answer session on the techniques involved. For those of you wanting to break into this the most lucrative branch of magic this is an opportunity not to be missed. Shep Hyken does not normally appear at magic conventions. That's why his name is probably unfamiliar to you. For a number of years he was a successful tradeshow magician before breaking into the world of 'Speaking'. Shep very soon became a major player in the National Speakers Association of America, speaking to various corporate and business groups in customer services and training, using magic to hit line 'key points'. His talk at Eastbourne 'Magic and the Speaking Business' will feature an actual performance example of a speech he would present to a corporate audience. The remainder of his talk will be spent telling you 'how to get bookings and how to make your business more successful'. Whilst the emphasis of his talk will be on a corporate audience the information that Shep so generously shares will help you to increase your bookings whatever area of magic you are in. Tim Conover, Seth Kramer and Shep Hyken are the greatest role models you can find for their experience in working at the sharp end. To miss listening to and learning from this trio you do so at your own peril. This year's specialist lecturer for the children's entertainer is David Kaye better known as Silly Billy. David hails from New York where he performs more than 300 shows a year and is now recognised as the city's top children's entertainer. Occasionally he takes time away from his busy performing schedule to appear at magic conventions. David does not claim to be a professional lecturer; he is a full time performer. His lecture reflects that. He teaches the 'real work' from real world experience. For six years has written a monthly column for MAGIC magazine. His column entitled 'Turn it Around' is about how to successfully perform magic to children. David is the author of the highly acclaimed book on kid's entertainment 'Seriously Billy'. His lecture stresses that comedy is a must together with a number of principals he considers essential when presenting kids shows. Another aspect he recommends is to make effective changes to a trick according to the age group in the audience. If you are looking for a different approach to your children's show make sure you are at Silly Billy's lecture on Thursday morning. These are just five of the stars of magic who will be at Eastbourne in September and who you will want to see and learn from. Register today for this truly exceptional magical convention by going to the Payment on Line page on the website or contacting the Registration Officer Neville Johnson on 01202 873234 or by e:mail Neville Johnson25@aol.com Do it now! Never before has a British Ring Convention included such an impressive display of magical talent as is being assembled at Eastbourne. Some are making a most welcome return; others we are delighted to welcome for the first time. Among these are Jeff Hobson, James Dimmare, John Carney, Mikael Szanyiel, Wally Eastwood, and Soul Mystique. When Ron and Martin Macmillian announced that Jeff Hobson was appearing in the International Weekend Gala Show in 1999 a number of magicians in this country were sceptical as to how his brand of humour would be received by a British audience. How wrong their scepticism was. The audience absolutely adored him, as have audiences on all the subsequent occasions when he has performed here. Not only will we have the pleasure of this talented artiste, we will have the benefit of his lecture/workshop on 'How to be successful as a Stand-up performer'. Those of you who aspire to having a stand up act or are looking to improving your existing act this session with Jeff Hobson will prove invaluable. James Dimmare sensed at an early age that audiences might prefer small intimate magic. So he stored his cumbersome props, developed an original act with doves and parakeets, novel and innovative new magic effects, and most importantly a persona; a brilliantly original and sophisticated contemporary style yet with the look and style that closely resembles the multi talented and memorable Fred Astaire. Dressed in a stunning tuxedo, James captivates audiences with a penetrating enticing look and without a word transforms the imagination with unforgettable grace and dexterity. He is the winner of the prestigious 'Stage Magician of the Year' award presented by the Academy of Magical Arts at the Magic Castle in Hollywood and in Las Vegas the coveted Siegfried and Roy 'Golden Lion Head Award' not once, but twice, the only magician to do so. Not only will you see John Carney's stage act but also he is one of the International Close-up Gala team. If this is not enough he will be giving one of his famed lectures. He is a prizewinner at FISM and has been voted 'Magician of the Year ' by the Magic Castle seven times. John has made a great reputation throughout the world as one of the finest sleight of hand magicians ever. Coins, playing cards and handkerchiefs take on extraordinary properties as John defies the laws of physics. His comedy and magic involves the participation of members of the audience, all accomplished with wit and charm but without any embarrassment. He is a true role model for any close-up worker. On stage John's Mr Mysto is always a sensation. This bumbling character stumbles around the stage mumbling to himself but never the less manages to do some amazing magic. As a lecturer John Carney is always entertaining, informative and stimulating. His lecture includes close-up and stage magic using cards, coins, cigars and a variety of everyday objects. Each routine is a lesson in itself containing the insights and ingenuities that have made John one of the premier teachers of magic today. Topics include presentation, routining, misdirection and creativity. To quote Faucett Ross 'whether you are an amateur or a professional you will derive knowledge and inspiration from a Carney lecture. This young man has the happy ability and the genius to impart it'. At this year's World Magic Seminar Stage Competition in Las Vegas a young Frenchman won the Siegfried and Roy Gold Award and 1st prize from Paris Mikael Szanyiel with a highly original and entertaining act. It was the act that 'brought the house down' an act that was the highlight of the Seminar. At Eastbourne we will be privileged, the first in this country, to see this act, an act that everyone is certain to enjoy. How many of you have heard of Wally Eastwood? Not many I suspect. Several claim themselves to be the fastest jugglers in the world, a claim difficult to confirm. But Wally must be a serious contender for the crown for being the fastest. His speed is confirmed as being incredible whether it be with clubs, balls or ping-pong balls with a blended choreography of dancing pirouettes, somersaults and back flips. For over 15 years he has appeared continuously at many of the Las Vegas Strip leading Hotels and Casinos. You can make your own mind up as to whether you consider whether or not Wally is the world's fastest juggler after seeing him perform at Eastbourne. It is not often that we have an act from Australia at our Convention. Not so this year when Soul Mystique take to the stage. Last October, in Sydney, they appeared for the first time at a magic convention. Lecturing at the Convention was Alan Shaxon who saw their act and had no hesitation in recommending them to Paul Stone the Ring's Talent Co-ordinator and Gala Show producer. From Sean Taylor, the host of that Convention in Sydney we learn that the duo who form Soul Mystique are Gavin Skinner from Brisbane and Lydia Lin from Singapore. They came together ten years ago during which time they have worked regularly on cruise ships as well as engagements worldwide. Sean admits when they began their act he had no idea of what to expect. At the end he confesses to be full of wonderment. You also will be full of wonderment as you watch Soul Mystique perform at the Congress Theatre. These six great acts alone should convince you that the place you should be is Eastbourne from September 19th to 24th for the 70th British Ring Convention. If you have not already registered, do so today either on line via the British Ring Website www.britishring.org.uk or by contacting the Registration Officer Neville Johnson on 01202 873234 or by e.mail to Nevillejohson25@aol.com Childrens Showtime 2006 Those of you with a keen interest in the entertaining of children will want to be at the Devonshire Park Theatre on Saturday 23rd September. Once again Terry Herbert has devised and produced the show and has been able to assemble a talented and varied cast of childrens entertainers to give a contrasting blend of magic, excitement, fun and laughter that will not only appeal and thrill children of all ages but will win the acclaim of their elders. Who better to host the show than David Kaye better known as Silly Billy? Wearing his trademark jumbo sized glasses and no clown make-up he appeals to all children, even the youngest as well as adults. To children Silly Billy is very silly and occasionally mischievous. Adults like him for his sharp intelligent wit. For those who attended his informative lecture on Thursday morning will be able to witness the effect his advice has on an audience. And who are Billy's special guests? Magic Rose is distinctive among Lady Magicians by using three or more live rabbits and dove productions in her show. With over thirty years experience working with children Magic Rose has the ability of making each child feel special because she firmly believes they are. Jimbo (a.k.a. Jimmy Carlo) is one of the busiest childrens entertainers in the country. He has enjoyed continuous summer seasons with all the major Holiday Camps while his overseas performances have taken to a wide range of countries not only in Europe but also in America. On three occasions he has been the recipient of the British Ring Comedy as well as receiving awards for originality. Jimbo is the Heavyweight Champion of comedy magic. Gingernutt the Clown brings his own brand of magical humour to the show. He is the current holder of the Auguste Clown of the year from Clowns International U.K. Earlier this year he was awarded 1st prize for the individual Skit Competition at the World Clown Association Convention held in America. With Gingernutt the Clown you get the very best of magical clowning. Who better to close the show than the colourful illusion act of Bharat & Jyoti Patel. Attired in authentic Indian costumes and a series of startling illusions Bharat & Jyoti bring a flavour of Indian Magic to Eastbourne that will not only startle you as well as bewildering and mystifying you. A perfect ending to what will be a memorable show. As usual the IBM Clowns will be on hand before and after the show with their crazy antics ensuring that the young audience have the time of their lives. The show starts at 10.30 am and the price of seats for the show is £5.00 and can be obtained from the Devonshire Park Theatre Box Office. It is requested that Conventioneers attending the show occupy the seats in the Circle leaving the seats in the Stalls for the children of our host town for whom Childrens Showtime is primary staged -------------------------------------------- 9. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 108 'Another 'Blast from the Past' During the late Sixties, a Maori singer known as - 'Prince' Tui Teka, appeared on the scene, and became a sort of National 'Superstar Icon' in New Zealand. Many people thought that he was a real 'Maori Prince'; it was in reality, only a fanciful title he'd given himself. Not only was Tui a singer but he also played various musical instruments as well, notably the trumpet. He had a big voice with a big personality to match - in fact he was a big man in every sense the word; I don't know what he weighed, but it must have been in excess of 20 stone (127/128 kilos), reminiscent of another Maori singer from the Sixties, the late Rama White - she was a wonderful woman with a great sense of humour, who was often advertised as a -'TON OF FUN'! Tui used to drive around in a - 'Chevy Impala Station Wagon' and, where most people would have 'Go-Faster' stripes/decals, Tui had wood panelling that had been beautifully decorated with artistic Maori carvings; rather ostentatious but it did help to create the impression that he was a - 'Real Prince' (Aaahhh, that show biz' bullshit strikes again!)! It was quite a sight to see him get into the car - you could actually see the vehicle lean over, the springs groaning as they took his magnitudinous weight! How he drove it I'll never know, most of the steering wheel disappeared within the folds of his gargantuan stomach! The last time we saw Tui Teka was at the 'Castle Hill RSL Club' (which was one of our regular club bookings), in Sydney Australia; I'm guessing but probably around 1980/81. He was performing as a guest artist with another New Zealand Icon - who just happens to be a very close friend of ours, the famous, EDDIE LOW - 'THE VOICE IN A MILLION'! There were two episodes from that wonderful night that have been 'burnt into my memory banks' forever! The first was when Eddie and Tui, standing on opposite sides of the stage, played on their trumpets a stirring rendition of Nini Rosso's 'IL SILENZIO', which brought the house down to thunderous applause! The other episode was when Eddie sang a song that he had written himself titled - 'Songs from Home' which had every New Zealander in the place howling their eyes out, myself included, for the second time. The first as when Eddie, with guitar in hand popped around to our home in Sydney one afternoon and sang it for us; wanting to know what we thought of it. The tears running down my cheeks told him all that he needed to know. He headed off to a studio and commercially recorded it! I really am a 'Softie' at heart! Incidentally, the Secretary Manager of the Castle Hill RSL Club in Sydney was a chap called Bruce Cameron, who used to manage the Tainui Motor Hotel in Whakatane, which is where my wife Veronica was brought up and, where we lived prior to leaving for 'Aussie'. It's a small world!  I cannot vouch for the authenticity of this but, 'WHERE THERE'S SMOKE, THERE'S FIRE'! 'Prince' Tui, on tour somewhere in his 'Chevy', which was packed with members of his band - all hungry, pulled into a drive-in 'McDonald's' - stopping at that little mesh covered grill that you talk into. Winding the window down Tui says, "I'll have Five Big Macs, Three chickens, five large chips and three large Cokes!" "Will that be all sir?" queried the tinny voice that issued from the speaker - that probably belonged to some snotty, pimply-faced fifteen year-old. Turning around Tui says, "AND WHAT DO YOU FELLA'S WANT!" 'Prince' Tui Teka died in 1985, at the age of 48! Nuff said! Tui is buried at Tokomaru Bay, which is on the East coast, around 80 km N.E. of Gisborne, h/way 35, where the ruins of a frozen meat plant and port installations are witness to better times. Also there, is a Maori meeting- house, built in 1934, with some beautiful Maori carvings on display. Veronica, who remembers the 'Massive' Tui from those early days, said that if you wanted to take a photograph of Tui's grave, you would need a 'Wide Angled Lens'! She can be so SICK at times! It's not entirely her fault. Hanging around me damn near 24 hours a day for the best part of 35 years and being bombarded with my wicked sense of humour; I guess something had to rub off! -------------------------------------------- 12.
