Chairman Bradley Jacobs announced that because of the generosity of several donors, the number of scholarships available is being increased from three to five. Applicants should be between the ages of 10 to 18 years. Magic Camp is a wonderful place for youngsters to learn new magic skills and improve their performance. From Magician To Speaker Part Three -------------------------------------------- Message Quentin Reynolds You are an expert who speaks. That is how you position yourself as a speaker. Someone who has expertise and is sharing this with an audience. Now you might be saying to yourself, "That's alright for you Quentin, but I'm not an expert on anything much." Don't worry! That's the obstacle you're going to solve right now. Here's the deal... Get out a sheet of paper and write down everything you're interested in...hobbies, skills, talents. Then think back to your childhood and list all your interests from back then. If you have old photographs, scrapbooks or journals, go back through those. Forgotten interests will come to mind. Ask your friends and family what they think you are good at. What do they think your skills and talents are? What would they list as your strengths? List these as well. Make sure you've listed everything you do or like doing even if you think you haven't any great talent for it. What are your hot buttons? What gets you going? What really irritates you? Have you a cause you would like to champion? Look through your list. Are any themes showing? You're looking for a topic which is both interesting to you AND both interesting and useful for your audience. You might be passionate about a rare species of butterfly and you might be able to turn your knowledge into an entertaining and informative forty-five minutes but it isn't a topic that a booker is likely to find useful. My main topic is 'Intuition', and the theme is 'Learning to Trust Yourself'. One of the biggest problems companies have is getting someone to take the responsibility to make a decision. People are terrified to make a decision lest it turn out to be a bad one and tend to leave the decision to others. So my topic is interesting and useful. I teach people how to take the time to listen to themselves -something very few people do but everyone agrees they should. Let's recap. Your topic is something you are really interested in - even better - passionate about and it's something that is useful or could be shown to be useful to a booker. Next week I'll show you how to be an expert on your subject even if you think you're not. © Quentin Reynolds. Quentin Reynolds works as both magician and speaker. Copperfield, Said To Pave The Way For "Cris Angel" -------------------------------------------- Message from Jack Straw 1) Copperfield performs in Massachuesetts David Copperfield, reined King of Magic in the 90's with titles like, Magician of the year..etc.....and probably Magician of that Millennium, has been known recently to have paved the way for the Prince's of magic, David Blaine and NOW the current royalty of prestidigitation, Criss Angel. Angel, now is on the throne! Learned, he did from the 90's master of magic TV...how to USE THAT CAMERA! David isn't on TV, he is LIVE in Amherst, Massachusetts, at the Mullins Center....NO CAMERA TRICKS HERE! From the Collegian: David Copperfield makes Mullins Center more magical By Monica Gleberman, Collegian Staff January 30, 2006 David Copperfield has been mystifying audiences for years with his magical illusions. In addition to his live shows, Copperfield has been on numerous television networks, bringing magic into the lives of millions. On Monday, Feb. 6, he will bring his acclaimed act to the University's very own Mullins Center with two performances, one at 5:30 p.m. and one at 8:30p.m. Renowned worldwide as an artist who has raised his art form, as well as many others, to new heights, lately it seems that Copperfield has performed nearly impossible tasks. For example, he made the Statue of Liberty disappear. In one show he even walked through the Great Wall of China. During a live television special he made thirteen audience members stand together holding hands with a curtain raised. Once the curtain fell, the audience members had disappeared. However, it hasn't always been this way. Born Sept. 16, 1956, David Kotkin started out as a young kid growing up in New Jersey. He first got interested in magic when his grandfather showed him a card trick. According to Copperfield's official website, he has been taking on these types of tricks and performing for his family since the age of 12. He went on to be the youngest person ever to be admitted into the Society of American Magicians. Within a few years, still in his teens, he was teaching a class at New York University. Over the years Copperfield helped to pave the way for fellow magicians and illusionists like David Blaine and Criss Angel, who has his own show, "MindFreak," on A&E. In 1993, Copperfield was executing an onstage illusion in which he weightlessly flew with a lady from the audience in his arms. His flight illusion was considered by experts and historians of magic to be the greatest illusion ever performed on stage. In the past decade Copperfield is said to have grossed about $1 billion and has reached over 20 million people around the world. He is currently the only magician to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Copperfield holds the Broadway record for his show "Dreams and Nightmares," which sold more tickets and grossed more money per week than "The Lion King," "Cats," "Phantom of the Opera" and "Chicago" even during their highest selling weeks. In 2000, Copperfield was named a living legend by the U.S. Library of Congress. Copperfield also has worldwide appeal, which is proven by the fact that he has appeared on stamps in four different countries. Copperfield started a rehabilitative program called Project Magic. This program helps strengthen dexterity and motor use in disabled patients by using simple sleight of hand magic. Project Magic has been implemented in over 1,000 hospitals and over 30 countries throughout the world. Even with time off, Copperfield has been constantly working on new illusions and now has a new show that he is performing around the world called "An Intimate Evening of Grand Illusion." This show has been said to bring dreams to reality using state-of-the-art wizardry. Copperfield is and has always been a man of entertainment. He dabbles in the world of magic and illusions. He does the impossible and has constantly evolved over the years. This show will do nothing but impress and shock its viewers, and Copperfield will try to make his audiences believe in the unbelievable. Tickets to Copperfield's upcoming performance can be purchased at the Mullins Center or online at Ticketmaster. Remember to be prepared for the unexpected. -------------------------------------------- 9. Going to FISM? -------------------------------------------- Message from Don Wiberg (US) I.B.M. Broken Wand Arthur Setterington -------------------------------------------- Message from Eddie Dawes (UK) 22 March 1924 - 26 January 2006 The death of Arthur Setterington, internationally renowned as a magical author, inventor and historian, leaves a great void in the ranks of British magicians. For more than half a century he has been recognised as one of our most innovative conjurers and a prolific author who last year achieved his thousandth contribution to the magical press, many of them in Abracadabra, including both the first in 1947 and the thousandth in 2005. Additionally he authored thirteen books. He possessed the remarkable ability of being able to sit down and create a trick almost to order, some of his originations being marketed with Cube in a Tube probably the best known. From the age of four Arthur knew that he wanted to be a conjurer. He received his first magic set at seven, via the medium of Bourneville Cocoa coupons and a gift catalogue, and never looked back magically thereafter, becoming a popular children's and adult entertainer in East Yorkshire. He joined Hull Magicians' Circle in 1945, was a Past-President, former Secretary and Honorary Life Member, who, on his 60th anniversary last year was honoured by the Society with a special presentation at the Annual Dinner. Arthur attended the first post-war Convention at Hereford in 1946 and three years later joined the British Ring soon becoming a regular conventioneer. He served as a Regional Welfare Officer and was a Trustee of the Benevolent Fund. Later, in 1972 he joined The Magic Circle and in due course was elected to Gold Star membership of the Inner Magic Circle. Over forty years ago, when I arrived in Hull from Glasgow, I received from Secretary Arthur an invitation to become a member of Hull M.C. and subsequently we became good friends, sharing interests additional to performance, namely magic history, collecting and music hall, and later we collaborated in co-writing The Book of Magic (1986). Arthur had two magical heroes, Houdini and Annemann, and he always applied the latter's geometrical principle to his magical thinking, namely that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line; it was enshrined in his book Straight Line Magic and his lecture of the same title. His booklet titled The Power of Persuasion is arguably the finest example of applied psychology employed in magic, and his biography of The Great Lafayette a splendid tribute to that enigmatic showman. As a performer Arthur proved his versatility by winning every award Hull M.C. has to offer, some of them multiple times, especially the Jasper Maskelyne Wand for Originality. On the national and international scene he won the IBM British Ring Zina Bennett Trophy for Close-Up Magic in 1960 and 1968, the Originality Award in 1968, and from the parent organisation Awards in 1967 and 1978 for his contributions to The Linking Ring. He was a Gold Star Member of the Inner Magic Circle and recipient of the Society's Maskelyne Prize for Literature in 2003. In the sphere of Close-up magic Arthur will be forever remembered as the initiator in 1970 of rubber band penetration magic with 'Getaway' in New Pentagram, a trick that reverberated around the world and spawned many variations and developments, especially by Michael Ammar and by Daryl, who named it 'Crazy Man's Handcuffs'. Thus it was a truly memorable occasion in 1998 when Michael Ammar, lecturing in Hull, met Arthur for the first time. As a mentor to aspiring young conjurers, Arthur, from the inception of the Young Magicians of Humberside in the early 1970s, imparted his unrivalled knowledge and many youngsters benefited, including some now well-known professionals. The youngsters compete annually for the Arthur Setterington Close-up Trophy. Beyond magic, Arthur was a prominent Methodist lay preacher and he and his devoted wife Elsie dedicated much of their life together working for their church, particularly with the Sunday School and as Youth Group Leaders. Magic assisted in fund-raising for the Sunday School movement with the annual Jimmy Jumbo Show, Jimmy being a glove puppet. It seems doubtful that even Arthur would have achieved quite so much without the help and loyal support of Elsie, who over the years variously assisted him on stage, performed in her own right, stage managed, helped with front-of-house duties and hosted Young Magicians' meetings. To her, son Ian, daughter-in-law Shelagh, grandchildren Callum and Lucy, we extend our heartfelt sympathy in their tremendous loss. -------------------------------------------- 12. How To Cheat Friends And Incriminate People -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Johnson (Aust) I am performing a public show here in Canberra called How To Cheat Friends and Incriminate People in which I not only perform classic scams such as Fast and Loose and Three Card Monte but also some of the stranger cons such as those used by Snake Oil Salesman and Gurus! -------------------------------------------- 13. Hello From Kansas City, Ring #129 -------------------------------------------- Message from Carl Macan Ring 129 had its annual installation of Officers and present was our own Ring member, IBM President Mr. Roger Miller and his wife Sheila. Following the dinner, the Stage Magician of the Year contest was held and Mr. Terry Elton was voted the State Magician of the Year for Ring 129. All of the stage acts were tremendous, and a wonderful time of magic and socialization took place to a full house. -------------------------------------------- 14. Estimation Prediction - Greg Chapman -------------------------------------------- Message from Greg Chapman (NZ) You hand a participant an envelope to hold. Spreading a deck of cards face down you ask for them to touch a card and estimate its position in the deck. You claim to know the position of every card and that you can verify their accuracy or lack thereof. Suppose they touch a card and say 22. You respond by saying "The 22nd card is the eight of diamonds, which. isn't among these." you show all the cards above their selection, " ..and isn't among these" showing all the cards below their selection, " which leaves only the 22nd card, the eight of diamonds" You turn over the card to show it is indeed the eight of diamonds. You then focus attention on the envelope, saying "but what's really interesting is that earlier I had a feeling you would touch the 22nd card" slowly tipping a business card onto their hand from the otherwise empty envelope. They turn it over to reveal written on the other side, EIGHT OF DIAMONDS. The deck is set up with the eight of diamonds face up in the second position below a double backed card with a square of double-sided tape on it facing up. Begin by spreading the deck and asking someone to touch any card. As you spread be careful not to reveal the face up card. Your thumb covers the DS tape. When they touch a card, explain that you know the position of each card in the deck, and ask them to estimate its position while keeping the deck spread openly to allow a fairly accurate estimation. You say " The 22nd(or whatever number they name) card is the eight of diamonds,..which isn't among these cards." As you say this, separate the cards above selection leaving it on the top of the lower packet, flipping all the cards above their selection and spreading through to show their faces. This will mean that when you come to the first face down card, which should be the card they touched, it is actually the face down 8D above the double backed card which is now stuck to the card below it. Outjog the 8D, then flip all the cards below it and spread them. The 8D is not seen amongst any of the face up cards and because the double-backed card is now stuck to the back of the bottom card it will not show, leaving one last card to be turned over. Of course it is the 8D. This is a strong effect on its own but you still have a HUGE double whammy left for them in the envelope. This prediction delivers a knockout punch that will floor them. What I like the most with this effect is that selection of the card becomes a strong effect in itself, before building into the impossible prediction climax. Selling the estimation presentation whilst casually spreading through the cards to force the prediction is the key to this effect being so disarming. The same effect/presentation could be achieved using a classic force. The above handling however eliminates the need for sleight of hand and does little to compromise the overall cleanliness of the effect. Additional Comments:. This is great because it enables you to walk up to a group of people and immediately hand someone something to hold which creates interest in what you are doing. By employing some clever double-talk, you make the effect even stronger. When you reveal the prediction, rather than saying you knew they would choose the eight of diamonds, you say that you had a feeling they "would touch the 22nd card." This subtly reinforces that you predicted both the correct card and correct position although the card is the only thing you have actually predicted. ----------------- 15. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 85 The little utility item that makes this effect possible is so well known today, every kid's 'magic box' contains one, and it has often been exposed on television. It's seems amazing that one can still get away with performing the vanishing cigarette these days. The fact of the matter is, the simplest trick, in the hands of a consummate (sleight of hand) magician becomes a little 'miracle'. There is not the slightest hint, even to those who are aware of such gimmicks, that the master magician is using anything other than the pure dexterous skills at his disposal, developed over years of practice. NEVER, during the thirty plus years that I've 'magically' disposed of cigarettes (which must number in the thousands), have I EVER been accused of using anything other than the aforementioned pure dexterity! There is a magician friend of mine who hails from Nottingham, England; a full-time professional, he gets paid the 'Big Bucks' working his close-up and magic act for the corporate market. Occasionally, when we were booked for the same function, he made a point of watching me when I repeatedly performed, by request, the old cigarette in the coat effect with the same group of people, which throws the equally old magic adage - 'never perform the same trick twice', straight out the window. He would stand behind, in front, to the sides, on at any angle of me he could manage, to watch 'my moves'. "Tom" he'd say, "I know what you're doing and what you're using". "Of course you do" I'd interject. "Yes" he'd reply, "but what the bloody hell do you do with the 'gimmick' afterwards and where DO YOU put all those king-size cigarettes"? "Well Mark", I would say, tongue-in-cheek", THAT'S MAGIC, which is why they call me, 'THE AMAZING' "! The nicest compliment he has ever paid me was when he said, "Tom, you make your magic look like real magic"! Well, I thank DAI VERNON'S teachings for that. "USE YOUR HEAD AND ABOVE ALL BE NATURAL" he would say, "TAILOR YOUR TRICKS TO SUIT YOUR INDIVIDUAL STYLE AND PERSONALITY". Wise words indeed, from 'THE PROFESSOR', THE GRANDEST MASTER OF THEM ALL! Finally, for those of you out there who are scratching your heads wondering just where does a 'Butt Naked', magician hides several King-Size cigarettes and the required gimmick - -"KEEP SCRATCHING!" - ---------------- 16.
