Ron Spencer, M.I.M.C., Died Peacefully -------------------------------------------- Message Richard Webster (NZ) Ron Spencer, M.I.M.C., died peacefully on January 12th. He will be long remembered for the two-person code act he performed with his wife, Nancy. Ron was a dental surgeon by profession, but an entertainer at heart. I first met Ron and Nancy Spencer at the Meeting of the Minds convention in Seattle in 1995 where they performed their charming and mystifying "Minds in Harmony" act. Most of the audience had heard of the Spencer's, but few of us had had the opportunity of seeing them perform. Their presentation far exceeded our expectations, and the Spencer's received a standing ovation at the end of their performance. Ron and Nancy performed together for more than fifty years. After they retired they recorded their secrets in "Telepathy Personified" which explained every nuance and detail of their two-person code act. Martin Breese published this beautifully produced book in 2005. In the foreword to this book Edwin Dawes wrote: "Despite the numerous times I have seen Ron and Nancy Spencer present their act it has never palled, the freshness and apparent spontaneity of their interaction (not to mention the challenge for the magician of endeavouring to detect their methods!) has captured the imagination." Although they were best known for their code act, the Spencer's were also highly skilled psychic readers and worked at Butlin's Grand Hotel in Scarborough for many years giving a talk on palmistry, followed by readings. Their booklet on palmistry has become a highly sought after collectable. --------------------------------------------- 4. The Passing Of Jamie G -------------------------------------------- Message from Brad Toulouse President Ring 116 Windsor Magic Circle I can let you know that condolences have been pouring in from all four corners of the globe. Jamie certainly had an impact on many, many people, and the words have truly moved myself and his family. Very kind, and very inspirational. There will be a service tomorrow at Morris Sutton Funeral Home in Windsor. Viewing will take place from 1-3 p.m. Jamie is going to be cremated, and at a later date there will be an internment ceremony and we will perform the broken wand as part of it. If anyone still wishes to send condolences, they can be sent to me at presti.digit@sympatico.ca I will gather them all into a booklet and present it to the family. I know that there are many broken hearts over Jamie's death. Many people wish they had one more day, one more hour, just to tell him how they really felt about him. Please, if any good can come from his death, let us remember to live each day as it was our last, and to always take the time to care, to love, and to heal. It's what Jamie would have wanted, and the best way we could ever pay tribute to his magical life. I can see him in heaven now, showing his Card Warp, or his CD prediction, or his Dragon Fire Gimmicks to Dai, Karrell, Harry, Doug, and all of the other Master Magicians who left this plane before him. God Bless Us Everyone. --------------------------------------------- 5. The featured closing spot goes to David Blaine, today's most publicized magician in the United States. Working Through Vietnam And Hong Kong -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) Natalie and I just returned yesterday from an amazing journey (working) through Vietnam and Hong Kong. One of the most wonderful trips so far. I hope to put up some photos on the website in a week or so. I was performing on the Yachts of Seaborn cruise ship, a five star luxury ship with only 200 passengers. Without a doubt the most amazing cruise ship we have ever traveled on. The service and food was five star all the way. We didn't have a cabin, we had a suite complete with flat screen TV, full bar service (all booze was free). I did two shows during the week which seemed to go well, not big audiences as most people were asleep by 10pm! I am now home for 24 hours then head off again at midnight tonight to South America and the Amazon Jungle again to join a Holland America ship for a week. Then I'm back in Vancouver for a week before joining another cruise line for 3 weeks around South America. It's all go on this end. Natalie starts her new job this week as well so she will be busy. It's a six month job so then she can take summer off and travel with me again. -------------------------------------------- 11. For our 6th convention we are thrilled that joining us as our Guest of Honor will be the one and only J.C. Wagner . J.C. will also be lecturing and performing at the convention, and I suspect that a lot of people will be looking forward to seeing some of his classic effects, along with some of his killer new material. Joining J.C. will be a world class group of magicians that will provide you with all the close-up and cabaret magic you can handle. Lee Asher - Lee is one of the undisputed best card men. His sleight of hand with cards is sheer poetry and hangin' and jammin' with Lee is always a convention highlight. Mark Mason - Mark hails from England, and his combination of clever patter and devastating sleight of hand will make many people sit up and take notice. Bob Sheets - What can you say about Bob that hasn't been said before? A zany performing character and the ability to select and do great magic makes him a perennial favorite. The J Team - A 2 man lecture starring John Born and Jason Dean . this dynamic duo will be featuring some of their cutting edge brand of close-up magic with cards and coins. John Carney - The only magician ever to be named Magician of the Year by the Magic Castle in every possible category; Close-Up, Parlor, Stage and Lecture. A true modern master. 2005 was our first convention at the Palace Station and the new home of the LVMI was a perfect fit. The hotel rooms are reasonably priced ($39 - $59 a night) and the hotel features an array of restaurants from fast food to fine dining choices. One of the things that makes the convention so special, is what I call the Las Vegas factor. You never know who you will bump into at the LVMI. Vegas is where many of the stars of magic live, work and play; and many of them drop in, and we are always happy to see them. Here are a few of the great people who have been at the LVMI in the past; Penn & Teller, Bob Kohler, Gregory Wilson, Allan Ackerman, Doug Brewer, Dan and Dave Buck, Eugene Burger, Joey Burton, Michael Close, Gary Darwin, Daryl, Dean Dill, Steve Fearson, Aaron Fisher, Bob Fitch, Michael Forbes, Bill Goodwin, Paul Harris, Brad Henderson, Scott Hitchcock, John Kennedy, Chris Kenner, Mac King, Roger Klause, Bob Kohler, Nathan Kranzo, Chris Korn, Homer Liwag, Martin Nash, Doug Malloy, Jeff McBride, Eric Mead, John Moehring, Gary Norsigian, Shoot Ogawa, Chris Randall, Apollo Robbins, Adam Rubin, Peter Studebaker, Howie Schwartzman, Garrett Thomas, Torkova, Steve Bedwell, Dan Watkins, Stan Allen, Thomas Wayne, Paul Wilson, Frank Zak, Rick Wilcox (my apologies if I left off your name). Even though the LVMI is a close-up convention, we use five large screen monitors and two video cameras along with a video switcher, so you can see all the action all the time. We also have several jam shows, where the attendees (and usually some special guest magic celebrities) are invited to perform and show their stuff. That's what the "I" stands for in LVMI. The LVMI convention has always featured panel discussion. We bring together world class performers and a specific topic and allow the audience to Ask the Pros. The panel discussions are informative, and they always produce some great insights (and usually a few good laughs) We also feature a well-stocked dealer's room with all the latest and greatest magic effects, books and DVD's you could ever want. Usually we add in a surprise event or guest (at this year's 2005 convention, the surprise was a 3 man teach-in by Rune Klan, Gregory Wilson and Joshua Jay), so you never know what to expect. ============= If that isn't enough, the day after LVMI, on June 14th, we will once again be hosting a one day convention dedicated to magic and sleight of hand with coins. CoinCon 2006 will be a day (or maybe more?) filled with nothing but coin magic lectures, shows and workshops. We are assembling a roster of coin workers that can hold their own with anyone in the world. Rune Klan is planning on coming from Denmark, and what he can't do with coins, can't be done. John Born has created an arsenal of sleights and techniques that make his magic look real. Mickey Silver's visual style and love of magic have generated a lot of interest. Kainoa Harbottle's playful personality and unbelievable chops make him a modern coin master. And that's just for starters! . we are talking with many more coin conjurers and we expect that just like in 2003 with the first ever COINvention (immortalized on a 2 DVD set), CoinCon 2006 will mark the way for another generation of close-up magicians. In 2003 when we did both conventions back-to-back, we had to unfortunately turn away well over 125 disappointed magicians that tried to register too late. We fully expect that the LVMI/CoinCon 2006 conventions will be the must attend events for the close-up/cabaret magic aficionados. The conventions are hosted by Robert Allen and Danny Archer and they are dedicated to making their events educational, entertaining and an all-around great time. We have not yet update our web site (lvmi.net), but we couldn't hold it in any longer . LVMI/CoinCon 2006 will be four unbelievably great days of magic and we invite you to join us in the most magical city on Earth, Las Vegas! Registration Info LVMI $175 until April 30th CoinCon 2006 $ 75 until April 30th e-mail : lecturenet@aol.com -------------------------------------------- 16. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 82 More Hypnotic high jinks! After the show at the Waiouru military camp, they put on a small party /drinks/sandwiches for us, to which half the camp turned up, or so it seemed, as well. Anyhow we were sitting at one end of a very long table and some time during proceedings I started performing close-up magic (surprise, surprise). I was way down at the other end of the table when, a woman sitting close to Veronica start sneezing uncontrollably. By this time, Veronica had downed one or two or three or. drinks so, full of bravado, decide to play - hypnotist! She stared at the poor woman and said to her, "As you look into my eyes, you will stop sneezing". SHE DID! Some bloke near by began laughing so Veronica, her bravado now increased tenfold, turned to him and said, "If you don't stop laughing I'll give you the sneezes"! The next second, HE STARTED SNEEZING! Five minutes later, she made him stop. Strange how some people imagine that somehow, the hypnotist's 'POWER' can 'rub off'' on to somebody who is close to them. Just shows how suggestible and powerful your imagination can be, especially in conjunction with hypnotic suggestion! Another Unintentionally funny incident involved a young lady. I was standing behind her during a well known hypnotic test, where you lightly touch the back of your subject's neck with the back of your hand, telling your subject that, "my hand is a magnet. It is pulling you back... You can feel it... You're coming back," etc. etc. Nine times out of 10 they will fall back into your arms. On this particular occasion, the young lady fell back all right, then immediately fell into a hypnotic trance! It happens sometimes, with highly suggestible people. As I took her weight I became aware that the audience was screaming with laughter as she slowly slipped through my arms as I lowered her to the floor. Unbeknown to me, as she slid down, her top had ridden up against my arms with the - depending on how you look at it (excuse the pun), unfortunate result of her - not inconsiderable, boobs popping out. I didn't 'feel' a thing. SHE WASN'T WEARING A BRA! Would you call that -'TITILLATING?'
