Dean Dill In A Very Serious Automobile Accident -------------------------------------------- Message from Tim Trono forwarded on by Monte Smith My dear and close friend Dean Dill was in a very serious automobile accident. Tim Trono (of Murphy's Magic Supplies) has sent out this message, and I am taking the liberty of posting it here. Warmest regards, Monte Smith ------------------------- I am writing this letter about our friend in magic, Dean Dill. As many of you know, Dean was very badly injured in a car accident and this will be a HUGE financial burden to Dean and his family (especially during this time of the holidays). Dean is a man of true pride and won't ask for help so his friends are reaching out for this help because we know he won't. I know Steve Brooks has reached out to all of the Cafe members via PM and I'd encourage you to follow Steve's suggestion of PayPaling money directly to Dean at intmiracle@deandill.com if you are set up for same or sending it to his home address (see below). Thanks Steve! I just spoke with Paul Gross of Hocus Pocus who is planning a sale and donating all of the funds to Dean. More details on that will come from Paul. In the mean time Paul Gross of Hocus Pocus will also be accepting donations via credit card, checks, etc. Dean will get a list of all contributors and what was contributed. Make it clear when sending a donation that this is a donation for Dean Dill. Rest assured ALL of the funds will go directly to Dean and his family. You can contact Hocus Pocus at sales@hocus-pocus.com or at 800-407-4040. You can also send checks directly to Dean. Make payments to "Dean Dill" and send to his home at: Dean Dill 2130 Fairpark, #110 Los Angeles, CA 90041 (Dean is stuck in a hospital in Las Vegas so do not send flowers or such to this address... send what is really needed- money to help his family). Dean Dill is one of the greatest guys in magic and just a super person. I'd encourage everyone to put politics aside, reach down into your pockets, and let's take care of one of our brother magicians and one of the all time great guys in magic. Discuss this with your magic clubs, discuss it at the Castle, contact your friends, and get funds to help out Dean Dill. I would rarely reach out to others like this but everyone loves and respects Dean and I want us all to help him out. THANKS. Tim Trono --------------------------------------------- 5. David Bull - A little Story -------------------------------------------- Message from Henry Lewis (UK) This is really good news. I need not tell you more than you know of this fantastic man and his wonderful Company. -----Original Message----- From: David Bull To: Henry Lewis Subject: Fwd: A little story Dear Brother Henry and dear Doris, too, Good evening. It is with pleasure and gratitude that I would like to report to you that I am feeling stronger; I'm improving my health faster than anticipated such that I was able to join the company backstage during the show yesterday. It is quite an experience to be surrounded by such a magic company. Next I'm planning to appear onstage for the New Years Eve performance - at least at the end of the show for the final bow. As a dear Cuban friend of mine says: "If Alicia Alonso does it with her ballet company in Cuba, I can do it in Beverly with Le Grand David." Have you heard of the extrarodinary life of Alicia Alonso and her world-famous ballet company in Cuba? Below is an email that Ellen sent me this morning and inspired me to sit at the computer and make a useful and enjoyable effort to relate to some of my dear friends. Yes, even from my corner I was very aware and proud of what she talks about. C.P. --- Ellen Sheehan wrote: Subject: A little story Dear Cesareo, It was so wonderful to have you backstage again! Your presence certainly inspired the joyful spirit of the show from opening to finale. After the show, when you were praising David and his performance, I wanted to tell you this little story but just couldn't find the words at the time. This moment may not have been visible to you from your vantage point in the wing: Just before the bottles trick, Li'l Av's hat bounced off his head to the stage floor (which of course is perfectly acceptable for a character with very big shoes and a red rubber nose, but our dear clown was unhappy because he always tries so hard to do his best). With a dance-like move, David gracefully picked up Av's hat, dusted it off, and gave it back to the grateful clown with a smile. In that moment of improvisation, with one gesture David showed an attentiveness, grace and kindness which beautifully expressed the nature of this company you have created. I thank you both. Oracle Magic Magazine -------------------------------------------- Message from Larry White After 30 years, David Goodsell has retired as Editor of M-U-M. After 12 years, Larry White, his Magic Editor has retired with him. But they are not retired, just moving into a new venture. For years, they both have had a keen interest in weird, bizarre, spooky, storytelling magic, as well as mentalism and mental magic. So it is with delight that we are offering our ORACLE MAGIC MAGAZINE to likeminded members of the magic community. We hope to follow in the tradition of Bascom Jones' Magick, Tony Raven's Invocation and Maskeyne ye Mage and Docc Hilford's New Invocation, Ted Annemann's Jinx, Bill Madsen's New Jinx, and Mary Tomich's Altar Flame. Those periodicals were successful, in large part, because of the quality of material submitted by some of the best minds in magic. That is our goal, as well. ORACLE will be published every other month with the first issue, January, 2006. Each issue will generally run 12 to 14 pages and contain from three to six effects or routines, plus a short feature such as an interview with a luminary in the field or an essay on a particular topic, and interesting curiosities. But, and this is a major difference from any magazine published in the past, accompanying each issue will be supplemental materials posted on our web site, available only to subscribers via a password published in each issue. And, we encourage our subscribers to submit their own commentary to be added to our website for the benefit of all subscribers. Also, from time to time we will include reviews of products of interest to our readers as well as notices of special interest. ORACLE will be published as single pages, printed front and back, three whole punched for storing in standard sized binders. Subscribers can download the supplemental materials from the web pages to print and add them to the binders for convenience. If you wish to know more, or subscribe, please visit our web site for further information. You will also find a free gift there. Beginning with our first mailing, the SUBSCRIBERS ONLY area will be password-protected, but, until then, if you click on this area you will have access to two sample pages (neither of which are in the first issue) which contain instructions for making and performing a "TEST CONDITIONS SPIRIT MESSAGE." You won't be disappointed. Also, check out the list of magicians who have promised contributions to ORACLE. We bet you'll find a few names you recognize. Our website is at: www.OracleMagicMagazine.com Also, if you e-mail Larry privately, he will send you a PDF which describes what is in the first issue in detail and a short preview of #2. LarryWhite@OracleMagicMagazine.com -------------------------------------------- 13. Scam To Take Magicians Money. Read So You Are Not Taken! -------------------------------------------- Message from Jack Straw Please read article from MAGIC-GUIDE the link below. It is a description of a scam that is out there taking magicians money. It involves wiring money to an account. The best advice we have for a professional magician in a business transaction: 1) ALWAYS take 1/2 payment on signing of a contract! This should be at least thirty days before a date. 2) ALWAYS have the money for the deposit WIRED to your account. 3) ALWAYS have balance paid with a CASHIERS CHECK. There are situations this may not apply. Casinos pay at the end of a run. Clubs that have been in business a long time and you can trust will pay full amount at the end of a run. Dates that the above would apply are plentiful. Corporate functions, private parties, some Fairs, Festivals. Note: If you are traveling and especially going out of the country HAVE LARGE DEPOSIT and airplane tickets if the contract includes airfare and travel. http://magic.about.com/od/themagicbusiness/a/lyndel1.htm -------------------------------------------- 14. The Amazing Orchanté Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchanté)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 78 'The Wellington Opera House' The last time I had graced that 'Mighty Stage' was on Joe Brown's-'Search for Stars - Grand New Zealand Tour,' in 1960 - I was then just 16 years old - now, 12 years later, I was back. The Opera House was available for three nights in July - Thursday the 13th, Friday the 14th, and Saturday the 15th (I will explain the significance of the dates later). The cost of hiring the Opera House was, oh dear God, a $1,000 per night! That Did Not include the extra expenses for staff - lights and sound men, usherettes, front of house, etc., etc. and to top it off, my 'angels' also wanted other artists on the show; that was not my idea at all, I have always been a - 'One Man Show'! Against my wishes, I set about getting support acts and a band together. My first choice was SYLVIA SEVANNA, an exceptionally beautiful young blonde, originally from Germany, who had a fabulous fire dancing routine. I can't remember how we first met, but she was still going to school at the time. She would often come up to my flat after school, still in her gym dress, and before everybody starts jumping to conclusions (you dirty-minded buggers), she was always accompanied by her (late) father Harry, who guarded her like a demon. That didn't stop a certain, very charming Welsh magician (who had quite a way with 'birds'- the feathered kind) from 'poking' his 'magic wand' at her a few years later, the 'Dirty, Filthy, Lucky ##xx**#x'; which not surprisingly, resulted in the bringing down of - 'Harry's Germanic wrath' upon his head! I do remember my mate, Murray Hobson, and the rest of the guys I was flatting with, 'drooling' all over the place, as did most of the male population, whenever she turned up! I have a rather large record collection of Hawaiian/Island/'Exotic' style music, and I was taping a collection of tunes for Sylvia's fire - dancing act. Dear oh dear - it was all so long ago; I'm beginning to feel positively ancient! My next choice was a young magician from Napier whom I had met somewhere along the line. His name was JOHN DENNING - he did illusions and some escapology. Next was a pop singer/guitarist - BRIAN SWANSON; he had his own band with a female singer, ANNE MICHELLE. I had known Brian for a long time - he used to play with a band from Hastings called, 'The Shaddracks'. Brian had two slight problems, he thought he was 'God's Gift' to women, to everything actually and, when it came to driving, Stirling Moss was, compared to him, a rank amateur. Veronica and I were on some tour down in the South Island. We were in the back seat of the car and Brian was driving-as usual, like a bloody maniac! We were out in the country - miles from anywhere, going down this narrow, steep and dusty road, when a sheep wandered out into the middle of the roadway. We all yelled and screamed but Brian was going so fast (there was no way he could've stopped in time), that when we hit the sheep, we hardly felt the bump. The force of the impact upon the sheep however, was so great it was cut completely in half! When he finally did pull up, we all piled out of the car and refused to get back in again until Brian agreed to let somebody else do the driving. WHAT A COMPLETE 'NUTTER!' The first half of the - 'INTERNATIONAL STAGE SHOW' was all variety and music, with myself closing, before the intermission, performing the 'Fakir' act. During the intermission it was all 'Go - Go-Go'! I had to have a fast body wash after performing the Fire-eating etc. and then get dressed ready for the hypnotism show, which took up the entire second half - approximately 90 minutes. The opening night - (THURSDAY the 13th) had been well 'Papered' so although 'The House' was almost full the actual 'door take' was pretty thin, none the less - the show was well received. When I called for volunteers for the hypnotism show there was, as usual, a mad stampede for the stage, with over one hundred excited people, enthusiastically 'panting at the bit'- willing to 'Go to Sleep' the 'Orchanté' way! I set about sorting the 'wheat from the chaff, with various 'Hypnotic Tests' and some amusing 'Waking Hypnosis' stunts. I finished up with around 70 subjects on stage of various age groups, with several university students among them. One chap was over sixty years old! He was an exceptionally good subject and talking to him after the show, it turns out that he was one of FRANQUIN'S 'Super Subjects', and that he, along with several other 'Super Subjects', had toured the world with - THE FABULOUS FRANQUIN SHOW! ---------------- 16.
