New Orleans Report - Jon Racherbaumer ----------------- Message from Jon Racherbaumer (USA) Aftermath Update #1 Finally there is a fragile semblance of normalcy. Everyday life seems routine in Shreveport, Louisiana; however, many displaced citizens from New Orleans and the Gulf Coast can be seen here. I can identify them by the stricken expression on their faces-a combination of being stunned, incredulity, and abject sadness. A large part of their personal identity-their homes and all this entails-has been obliterated. They are operating from an emotional ground-zero, having to make improvisational decisions quicker than they are accustomed. And the survivors recognize each other and move closer together. They are now kin. They can immediately share what they cannot put into words.and if they could, they wouldn't want to hear themselves saying such words. Jessica and I are safe and mostly sound in Barrie Richardson's home. (Barrie and Janie are on a cruise.) My children that were in New Orleans (Erika, Robynn, and Ry) are safe, as well. Our home in Algiers Point is still standing-little damage; no water. We are in one of the oldest settlements across the river on the West Bank. Out home is old (1860). We are on high ground. We don't know if looters broke in, but there is now security in the area. We left home with very little on our persons. Possessions, in the harsh light of death and merciless destruction, don't mean much by this measure. Besides, no one knows when its safe and sane to return, if for anything to check out details and secure the house. We may try to return in two or three weeks to pick up some stuff. Otherwise we are reconciled to base ourselves in Natchez until Halloween or Christmas. Right now the Big Easy is a toxic mess, beaten into submission. Nature regained part of what is forever hers in the long run. Right now, with my new laptop at the ready, having a workable cell-phone, and Internet connection, I plan to work and write in Natchez. I now have greater resolve to produce more and better content; to expand and enhance my Website; and to continue writing for Linking Ring, Genii, and M-U-M. I also have to finish the Jimmy Grippo book, plus cobbled together the master book on Riffle Shuffle work. It is necessary to say that the kind and uplifting messages we have received since the storm have been comforting and bracing. We deeply thank everyone. It was truly amazing and inspiring. Our hearts go out to everyone who did not fare as well as we did-all those that were "slammed" and lost everything they held dear. They are now suffering with succor or relief. We have resolved to help them in any way we can. There is a unifying force that kicks in when a tragedy of this magnitude takes place. This is the force that ultimately heals. More, later. Onward, Jon and Jessica ----------------- 3. Magicians Entertain Katrina Victims ----------------- Message from George Schindler - Dean of Society American Magicians Austin, Texas Sept 8, 2005 S.A.M. Assembly 206 has been invited to participate in the entertainment of 3,000 individuals that are now housed at the Austin Convention Center. On Sunday afternoon, Sept. 11 magicians from Assembly 206 will be providing walk-around magic for the citizens of New Orleans who are now housed there. Harry Anderson did street magic in Austin, Texas from 1971 to 1974 is back and did a Red Cross Benefit at the State House raising money for the victims of the Hurricane. ----------------- 4. Free Temporary Rooms To The Victims ----------------- Message from Don Drake (USA) Here in Las Vegas, some of the hotels (most actually) are offering free temporary rooms to the victims of the gulf tragedy. If you can make it here there are also several hindered magicians here, The Darwin Magic club and also Ring 258, etc. We are glad to pitch in and help. Being disabled, I can't do much physically, but I just had a peach of an idea. For every $10 that goes through my web site I will donate $1 to the victims, through the Salvation Army! And I challenge the other magic dealers to do the same. The cash flow has been low this month, but most of us here will help any way we can! Has anyone heard from Gary Hughes? Gary is the most wonderful magician; he always gave us visiting magi a beautiful room to stay in and he fed us also. I think we can pitch in and be there for him also, so if anyone does know how to contact him PLEASE contact me privately. Thanks, DD ----------------- 5. Chuck Hickok's Mentalism Lecture Review ----------------- Message from Richard Webster (NZ) New Zealand magicians had heard great things about Chuck Hickok's mentalism lecture, so Auckland magicians had high expectations which were easily met. Chuck charmed and captivated his audience from the moment he began. After showing us how he opens his act with a magic square, he gave us twenty minutes of his professional corporate act. He then explained the reasons why he presents the routines the way he does, and also explained his methods, most of which were easy and practical. I first saw Chuck present his act ten years ago. The effects are the same, but the presentations have evolved markedly. Chuck emphasizes presentations more than the methods, and this is one of the reasons he has become so successful. Afterwards, sales of Chuck's products were brisk, particularly his book "Mentalism, Incorporated." He also took orders for his new book "Mentalism, Incorporated, Volume Two", which will be published in November. I highly recommend Chuck's lecture to any organisation wanting a highly professional, entertaining and practical lecture about the art of mentalism. Chuck is friendly, outgoing, helpful and knowledgeable. ----------------- 6. A Dice Stacking Retrospective, Part 6 ----------------- Message from Tony L. Lewis (US) Hi fellow magic enthusiasts, As I was saying before I got diverted by my fascination with the career of master dice stacker, Todd Strong, my own dice stacking career started around 1958. At that time I was still a student in the math department of the University of Chicago. To the best of my knowledge, there wasn't much magic going on in the south side of Chicago where the university is located. However I did hear about a magic store named 'The Ireland Magic Company' that was located downtown. One fine day I took the IC railroad to downtown Chicago for the purpose of trying to meet other magicians. I got to the right address and walked up the stairs to find a pretty small magic store run by a petite woman. I almost walked out in disgust, but hung around long enough to be sold a couple of items by this very persuasive little lady who turned out to be the widow of a magician named Laurie Ireland, renowned for his skill in sleeving coins and in billiard ball manipulation. She was none other than Frances Ireland Marshall who had married the late, great Jay Marshall shortly after the death of her husband in 1954. Frances went on to become one of the most powerful forces on the American magic scene. When Frances periodically arranged a magic event in Chicago, she would get some of the very best magicians in the US to perform at it for chump change and they would do it gladly. She was truly an amazing lady. Shortly after I met and got to know Frances, she changed the name of her magic store to Magic, Inc. and moved it to the north side of Chicago. Frances¹ second husband, Jay would periodically appear on the scene at Magic Inc. It didn¹t take me long to realize that this was a truly great magician. I feel it was a real honor to have had the privilege of knowing Jay Marshall. The memory of his unique persona is stamped on my mind as clearly as if I had met him yesterday. Since I did not own my first car until 1964, It was a real chore for me to get from the University of Chicago campus to the North Side location of Magic, Inc. However, I happened to discover another magic store called National Magic located in downtown Chicago, in the Palmer House Hotel on what I believe was the 2nd floor. This place was definitely on its last legs. Every time I went there, I was the only customer on the premises. The fellow behind the counter was a talented young magician named Johnny Polumbo (Does anyone know if he is still around today?). Johnny¹s instructions were to liquidate all the inventory of the store as fast as he could and to take any reasonable offer made for any of the wide assortment of funky magic tricks that were on the premises. I would periodically sort through the wide assortment of magic that was in the back room and occasionally find something that I thought I might use. I put in the lowest reasonable bid that I could think of and more often than not it was accepted. Johnny Polumbo was very good at sleight of hand, particularly with coins. He was the one who weaned me away from all the mechanical magic that I had been doing up to that point and showed me how to perform gimmick free effects. One day I walked into Chicago Magic and Johnny pulled out a small leather cup and four dice. He used these to perform the first dice stack that I had ever seen. I was transfixed! He did it a few more times and then invited me to try. I gave it a few unsuccessful shots and finally quit trying at that time, but I made up my mind that I would master this fascinating skill no matter how long it took me to do so. Johnny told me that he had picked up his dice and cup at Magic, Inc., so I arranged to make that trip up to the north side of Chicago and purchase a set for myself. I carried through on my intentions a short time thereafter. When I told Frances Marshall what I wanted she informed me that she was selling a set of dice stacking essentials which included the teaching manuscript of Clarke 'The Senator' Crandall, entitled 'How to Stack Dice for Fun and No profit.' The rest of the package consisted of a small, *soft sided* leather dice cup, five 5/8 inch inlaid dice, one 8 mm die, and a jumbo 1 1/2 inch white die. These were all the components necessary to execute the dice stacking routine described in the Crandall manuscript. I believe the whole works was priced at around $10 which tended to buy a pretty decent magic trick in those days. From some figuring I just did based on stats I obtained from the WWW, that would be about $65.00 today. One of my deepest regrets is that I only bought one of those lovely little dice cups which seem to be unobtainable today. Mine is still usable, but doesn¹t look too sharp when viewed by an audience. Note that I emphasized the fact that the cup was soft sided. I am in the minority of dice stackers who prefer a cup of this type. My reason for doing so is that in using a soft sided cup, I can easily retain the jumbo die, final load, gripping it through the sides of the cup. With a hard sided cup, the load must be held in using the little finger. I feel that the load can be released more gently using the method I employ. After studying the matter for a while, I have found that it is almost impossible to obtain a soft sided dice cup today. The reason for this is that it is much easier to make a leather dice cup by forming it around a hard acrylic center or one made from a similar material. About a couple of years before he died, I convinced the great magician and craftsman Mike Rogers to make a soft sided leather dice cup for me. It is my favorite cup except for that original little one that I cut my dice stacking teeth on. After I received my cup from Mike, I asked him if he would like any referrals to make similar ones for dice stackers who shared my preference for a cup of that type. Mike replied with an emphatic 'NO!' He said that it took him far longer to make my cup than it did to make the standard one and that he would never even think of doing so again. I apologized to Mike for inadvertently causing him grief. I did my best to placate him by presenting him with two of the sterling silver pendants and chains I sell for him to give to his granddaughters. Mike really liked the gifts and we remained on very friendly terms until his untimely demise due to cancer. Therefore I possess the only soft sided dice cup that Mike Rogers ever made and I treasure it. Next time I will tell you about how I learned dice stacking from the Crandall manuscript and how I managed to get a little tutoring from 'The Senator' himself! Regards, Tony L. Lewis ----------------- 13. The Appearing Sponge Bunny - Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) Effect: The magician reaches into thin air and produces a sponge bunny. Setup: Take one of the small bunnies and fold it in half, then fold the bunny in half again, making a very small ball. Hold the bunny with your thumb and first two fingers, pressing very hard. Method: To produce the bunny, simply open your fingers slowly. The bunny seems to come from nowhere. This move is a great way to produce the bunny from someone's ear. (Example of patter you could use, "Oh look you have a little hare on you. I'll get it for you.") Note: This can be done at the start of the basic routine above, or as a standalone trick. Funny Bunny Magician shows a small cute sponge bunny. It the blink of an eye, the small bunny becomes a large one. Props: One small sponge bunny and one large one. Setup: The large sponge bunny is pressed hard into the left hand as in finger palm. Small bunny is held openly between thumb and second finger of the left hand. Method: If you are doing the set up right it will look like you have only the small bunny in your left hand. Take the small bunny with the first two fingers of your right hand to show the bunny more closely to the spectator. Bring your left hand up under the right hand and start to open it. As the big bunny opens (in the left hand) your right hand's fingers tuck the small bunny back to thumb pinch, putting it under the large bunny now taken by the fingers and thumb of the right hand. Patter: "You can always be sure of one thing: one small hare will someday become a larger one." ---------------- 14. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 66 "Buried Alive - The Coffin of Death" Some time in October /November of 1971 I was contacted by Noel Oliver and Pat Whelan of BARB FILM PRODUCTIONS who represented a James Bond-style Stunt Show which involved around 20 stuntmen who, between them, leaped off 40 ft cranes, were knocked over by speeding cars, staged fight scenes, chariot races, raced through a Tunnel fire and got blown up with dynamite while inside a coffin etc. They wanted to know if I could come up with something different and - or spectacular, that could be seen in the middle of large stadiums and speedways for their forthcoming tour of New Zealand, starting in December. After some thought I said " how about I get buried alive in a coffin, for the duration of your show" (Around two/3 hours) This appealed to them, especially from a publicity point -of-view, as the air in a sealed coffin would only last around 10minutes or so, at the most. If I could perform this rather dangerous yogi feat, I would be required to sign a waiver that would let them off the hook in case anything went wrong. Confident that I could, with controlled breathing, and for the right sort of money, perform this Hindu type mystery, I would be most happy to sign their waiver! My next step was to visit the local undertaker in Whakatane. When I told him I'd like to look at some coffins for myself you could just about read his mind -he's a sensible bloke, looking ahead to the future, I'll show him the most expensive ones and explain that in 50 or 60 years' time they will be worth 10 times that much' - and when I said that I like to see the biggest ones available the cash register in his brain started 'smoking' as the dollar reel spun frantically around, clocking up astronomical amounts! The words have yet to be invented to describe the expression on his face when I told him that I was going to be buried alive and not only that, I didn't intend stay buried. This apparently 'sensible chap' had, in just a few moments, turned into a raving, totally insane, maniac! After explaining to him than I was a professional entertainer/Fakir/magician (which didn't help the insane factor too much) my Request became a little bit more plausible - just a little. He took me out to a back room and pointing up at a top-shelf where several coffins were stacked, and said, "I have a rather large one up there - it's what we call a family coffin - it is a type that is used when several members of one family are to be buried together when there's not much left of the remains, after a fire, for instance. Do you think that would do the job?" It was perfect. He was so intrigued with my intentions he let me have it cheap, for 'A Fistful of Dollars' and for just 'A Few Dollars More', threw in the handles and the wheat sheaf for the lid as well. Having procured my coffin I carted it off to my in-laws home, which caused some consternation - it wasn't 'seemingly ' to have a coffin hanging around the place. I painted it jet-black, screwed on the handles and wheat sheaf then had my stage name emblazoned on each side. You sure knew that we had hit town with 'The Amazing 'Orchanté' in huge, bright fluorescent orange lettering, screaming out to the world! It was a sight to behold, as we roared down the highways and byways of New Zealand with this 'thing' perched on the roof rack of the station wagon; all in the name of the publicity, you understand. I found that the easiest way to present the 'buried alive' without having a dig 6 ft holes in the middle of stadiums was to arrange to have a truck load of sand tipped over the coffin once I was sealed inside. It was a good choice, the coffin and its contents, namely me, were well and truly buried, and the sand sure prevented any air from escaping or entering the coffin! The first show was in Whangamata - it nearly was my last! There I was, lying in the coffin in a self-imposed trance, when suddenly the ground, the coffin and I shook violently - the first thing that ran through a mind was, 'Earthquake!' The shock of it snapped me out of my trance and I started to breathe heavily (very dangerous). I had to conserve oxygen, so settled down into 'trance' again, knowing that if anything was desperately wrong, Veronica, or somebody, would be digging the coffin, and myself, out from under. It turned out that the 'boys', who set up the stunt where they would blow somebody up inside a coffin with dynamite, were far too close to where I was buried. It was the shock wave that was generated when the dynamite charge was set off. It travelled through the ground, throwing me, the coffin, and all - for a 'six'! ---------------- 16.
