Paul Daniels presents The Magic of Max Malini Following a sold out run in London's West End, step back in time and be stunned by the most astonishing and skilful magic you will ever see. The story and magic of one of the greatest magical entertainers of all time is presented in the intimacy of the parlour theatre at the Magic Castle, recreating the atmosphere of Malini's original performances. From the borders of Poland and Austria, this Jewish gentleman travelled the world during the early part of the 20th Century, entertaining Kings and Queens, Emperors and even the Mikado of Japan. Max Malini's skill has never been surpassed, but it is now recreated by a modern master of magic - Paul Daniels, one of the world's top magicians. You will be dazzled by the level of his expertise and dexterity. By the very nature of this performance, seats are very limited. Early booking is essential to avoid disappointment. This show is in aid of the Magic Castle Dai Vernon fund. Two performances ONLY on Sunday April 24th at 3pm and 6pm. Contact Yvonne Smith at the Magic Castle for tickets. ----------------- 3. The Passing Of Terry Nosek ----------------- Message from Richard Webster (NZ) Terry was kind, generous, sharing and a good friend. His dry, offbeat sense of humor came over well on stage. In the 1970s and early 80s he worked professionally as Dr. Sigmund Fraud. He included many of his favorite routines in "The Collected Works of Sigmund Fraud" which came out in 1984. I performed his version of Key-r-rect for many years. I have many happy memories of the times I spent with Terry and Barbara. Here are a few reviews of Terry's performances: "Besides being funny, Nosek is a great mentalist." - Aaron Gold, Chicago Tribune "It was a treat, as usual, having you guest as Dr Fraud on the Eddie Schwartz Show with me. The station had calls the next day from people who were asking why you never admit you're psychic! Most of them feel the reason you say you're a fraud is because you have ESP and won't admit it." - Doug Dahlgren, WIND "Dr Sigmund Fraud, the unbeliever who leaves everyone wondering who's putting on whom." - Copley Newspapers. ----------------- 5. The Amazing Johnathan Jumping To The Sahara ----------------- Message from David Neubauer (US) reviewjournal.com -- News: NORM The Amazing Johnathan is jumping from the Riviera to the Sahara because of a 100 percent rent increase. He announced the move in an e-mail to the Riviera, saying his final show will be April 20. He plans to open his 10 p.m. show at the Sahara on May 6. He blamed his landlord Norbert Aleman, the producer of "Crazy Girls" and "An Evening at La Cage," for the breakup. Aleman recently signed a new showroom lease with the Riviera and doubled the rent on Johnathan's four-wall deal, according to the comedy magician, who left the Golden Nugget a year ago. In his e-mail, Johnathan thanked the Riviera for a "great year." He added, "It was really a blast, and we are sad about having to leave what we thought would be our home for a long time." In a separate e-mail, Johnathan told me that within the past six months his show's numbers "have gone through the roof and we have surpassed `La Cage' numbers at the box office, much to the dismay of Norbert. He believes I am taking customers from his other shows, but I don't believe they are the same customers." Aleman, reached by telephone, said he agreed to a one-year deal with Johnathan's rep in January. However, Johnathan came back and wanted a new deal with a different rep. "He made a deal and a deal's a deal," Aleman said. "Nothing personal, but he's crazy." reviewjournal.com -- News: NORM ----------------- 6. Re South African Magic Championships ----------------- Message from David J O'Connor (South Africa) Fellow magicians. In the recent information bulletin regarding the forthcoming S.A. Magic Championships and National Convention, there was a slight error. The Championships are scheduled to be hosted by the East Rand Magic Circle in Johannesburg from August 05 till August 09, 2005. Please visit their website for all the details at: www.samagicchamps.co.za We would love you to participate in the magic of Africa. ----------------- 7. Magic Aid ----------------- Message from Michael Chandler Aid worker Ms. Linda Cruse, of Youth Business International (YBI), a programme of The Prince of Wales International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF), recently contacted the British Ring President of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, Mr. Don Beattie, with a request. She told him that the volunteers assisting in Thailand after the recent catastrophic Tsunami had by now generally left the country. Many thousands of bereaved inhabitants were being cared for in refugee camps. She also stated that "In this camp every Thai has not only lost multiple relatives and friends but also their homes and any means of earning a livelihood". Although these survivors had adequate food, shelter and medical care life was still extremely stressful as they suffered distress over their losses and had understandable worries about their future. As she is herself from a magical family background, and a member of the Bristol Society, she had found that magical entertainment proved to have a very positive and beneficial effect on the inhabitants of these camps. Her simple request was for UK entertainers to go out to Thailand and perform magic for these survivors. To assist with the funding of this enterprise a table selling mainly lightly used magical products, including a Taurus Flying Carpet, and magic books will be at the Peterborough Convention on April 24th. A reasonable price for these items will be asked and anything unsold will be returned to the donors. All money raised will go towards the funding of this "Magic Aid". ----------------- 8. The Kurtis Walker Theatre ----------------- Message from David Neubauer (US) On May 11th at 2:00 pm there will be a celebration of the life of Kurtis Walker in the form of a memorial service at the Greek Isle Hotel in Las Vegas. As almost everyone on my list knows, Kurtis was an integral part of Kevin James's show. Everyone is welcome. The Greek Isle will be renaming the performance space “The Kurtis Walker Theatre” and performing a broken wand ceremony. Kurtis Walker was born July 2. 1980 and passed away March 31, 2005. He loved friends, music, photography and life very much. He will be greatly missed. ----------------- 11. Eller Marcos Martins Died In A Motor Cycle Accident ----------------- Message from Mahatma Multimídia (Brazil) IMS-Brasil International Magicians Society of Brasil Belo Horizonte - Minas Gerais ims-brasil@uol.com.br Obituary We regret to inform that the young and very talented street magician Mr. Euler (Eller Marcos Martins) died in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, last Friday, April 15, on a motor cycle accident. He had purchased the motor cycle two days before and crashed against a bus. The 19-year-old magician won the 2003 "Best Street Magician of the Year Award" from the Magical Arts Project. ----------------- 12. A Rule In Many Casinos ----------------- Message from Geoff Williams Alvin Goodman wrote: > The Miccosukee tribe in Miami barred me from the casino because > I had a deck of cards in my pocket.(Poker) We should do > something about this, its not fair.how are you going to cheat > if you do not deal. "Exchanging cards dealt for a better hand" immediately comes to mind as does "switching unmarked cards for marked ones." A rule in many Casinos: any cards on your person must be punched or otherwise corner chopped to clearly show they cannot be used. I can imagine many casinos hosting magicians' conventions (where EVERYONE has a deck or two on them) might be somewhat on edge. ----------------- 13. Magic And Giveaways - By: Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) In the last 5 years of performing at children birthday party’s and working with special needs children and the ill I have noticed that using giveaways in your magic makes your magic that more stronger. In the children's eyes you are giving them the magic and this is the most powerful type of magic you can do as a performer. The giveaways in real time do not have to be anything special as long as it is tied into the routine that you are doing. For example it could be as simple as a rock just laying on the street, it is that simple, it is what you do with that rock that what makes the rock special. Now I know that many out there do not understand about what I'm saying here and many magicians do not believe in giveaways in your show but it can really make your magic that much stronger. Even today I have people come up to me and say I remember seeing you many years ago. I was the one that got the magic glass flower that you produced from a dollar bill that was some pretty cool magic, matter of fact I still have that glass flower today. In the next few weeks I would like to get into giveaway magic for children and also I would like to get into giveaways and ideas new to the magic world. Personally I feel that this is a very important part of magic and something that could help your show. I'm sure you will be surprised on how easy it is...Jamie-G ----------------- 14. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 48 Alan Horobin, The Fabulous Franquin And The Great Tex Morton Alan Horobin - there is a wonderful incident I must relate, which I forgot about, until now. Alan was working with his chimps on the roof theatrette of either George Courts, Farmers, or Rendalls Dept. stores – can’t remember which, during the school holidays. I may have been working with him, can’t remember that either but, I was there the day a rather large, blowsy woman with a ‘tribe’ of kids behind her, finally got up to Alan (who was selling the tickets). She started berating him, about the length of the queue as if it was Alan’s fault, disregarding the fact that she and her entourage made a queue all of their own, and then, started on him about the tickets, which were all one price – I seem to remember one dollar. ‘How dare you’, she screamed, ‘make these poor kids pay the same as the adults!’ Alan, with years of practiced ease, said ‘Madam – madam, calm down. You’ve got it all wrong. The adults ONLY have to pay the same as the kids!’ For what seemed like an age, she stood there, blank-faced, and then some semblance of intelligence spread over her face, as the import of what Alan had said, hit her. ‘Well, that’s all right then’, she said ‘I’ll take 15 tickets’! To be kind, I like to think that those kids weren’t all hers and that she’d had a rather hard, trying day with ‘the tribe’. New Zealand for the size and population of the country, has produced an amazing array of talent and skills from all walks of life e.g. Rutherford, who first split the atom; Sir Edmund Hillary, who conquered Mount Everest; Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, world famous Opera singer; actress (the late) Nyree Dawn Porter, actor Sam Neil – actually, he was born in England, but like my wife Veronica, who is Scottish, was brought up from an early age, in New Zealand. The list goes on and on the writer, Ngaire Marsh; film producer Jane Campion – on and on the list goes. New Zealand in area is just a little larger than Britain, including Northern Ireland. The entire population of New Zealand (around 3.76 million), would fit into Sydney, Australia. The entire population of Australia (around 18.5 million), would fit into Greater London!! London is so terribly overcrowded, (the entire country is) and is dreadfully polluted from the horrendous traffic – (apart from Scotland). A good, old-fashioned horse and cart from the last century, could get across London City faster than you can today, driving a car. Great place to visit as a Tourist, but who’d want to live there? That’s why New Zealand is called God’s Own! So having pissed off every magician in London – and probably the whole of the UK - except for Scotland - (tough – facts is facts) I’ll get on with my saga. Looking through my old Diaries, I found a booking for ~AKTV2 (Auckland Television Channel Two) studios. Producer Kevin Moore has booked me to perform my Bed of nails, and Sword Swallowing acts. Now, I’m going to have to digress for a moment. Two of the greatest showmen to hit the world stage, came from New Zealand. The greatest, most successful in his craft, and financially, was FRANQUIN (multi-millionaire). There never has, never will be, another hypnotist to ever come near him. In his day, he didn’t do just one-nighters, or a week or two in a theatre – it was several months, and in some cases, 12 months or more – six nights a week. Pat Quinn, the Great Franquin, was, is, one of those rare individuals who when they walk into a crowded room, you know – you feel their presence – Franquin’s presence was awesome. Somehow, you just knew that someone had contacted your psyche – spine tingling, in the nicest possible way, best describes it. I’ll come back to Franquin, (my personal hero) later. ---------------- 15.
