Paul Daniels To Star At Harrah's, Las Vegas ----------------- Message from Andrew Lock - Paul Daniels Manager England's Top Magician, Paul Daniels to star at Harrah's, Las Vegas Paul Daniels is probably the most famous magician you have never heard of. Unless you're from Britain that is, where Mr Daniels is a household name, a huge star and holds the reputation of being one of the most popular society and show-business entertainers. With an impressive 17 years of award winning magic shows on BBC TV, syndicated in 47 other countries, Paul Daniels has performed more magic on television than anyone else in history. He was the first International recipient of the coveted 'Magician of the Year' award by Hollywood's Magic Castle, and he designed the magical illusions and special effects for two of Andrew Lloyd Webber's most popular musicals: Cats and Phantom of the Opera. With a résumé like that, it's hardly a surprise that news of Paul's upcoming Vegas shows has quickly become the talk of the Strip. But rather than causing rivalry amongst the established magicians already there, many of them are indebted to Daniels for boosting their careers. Daniels says: "With my BBC shows, we had a unique opportunity to feature magicians from all over the world, including some well known Vegas magicians, and their performances reached audiences of countless millions throughout the globe as a result." Popular Vegas magician Mac King is also a long-time friend of Mr Daniels, and was the driving force behind bringing him to Harrah's Casino where Mac plays his own sell-out shows Tuesday through Saturday afternoons. Commenting on this Mac says, "Over the years, Paul has performed a number of special one night shows in Vegas that have never failed to wow audiences, but he's in such a demand in Europe that it's been difficult to bring him over for a longer run. We finally managed to work things out for Paul to take over my show times for a week at Harrah's, April 19-23rd. I'm thrilled he accepted the offer, it's a real honor and I for one will be first in line to watch the show!" Mac is not alone in his admiration for Paul Daniels. Lance Burton calls him "the finest magician of the past century" while Siegfried and Roy have referred to him as "probably the most influential magician in the world." Reminiscing about the first time he played Vegas as a headliner in the Folies Bergere show, Daniels said: "I was initially booked for six weeks, and after the first performance I was flattered to be offered a very long contract, but all my family were in the UK and I knew I would miss them too much. When I went back to watch George Benson in concert at the Trop more than ten years later, I felt very honoured when the host showing me to my seat remembered me and my act!" Daniels clearly has a fondness for Vegas. He says, "I'm an entertainer, so how could I NOT love Las Vegas? In my home country, England, I am working all the time on TV, in cabaret and theatre, as well as doing presentations for major corporations, but if I don't get a regular Vegas 'fix' then I KNOW that I am missing out on life." After more than 40 years in the business, Daniels still gets excited about live shows. "I've always done live theatre. I love live shows, they're what I do. I particularly like performing for American audiences; they are very vocal in expressing their appreciation." So what can you expect to see at a Paul Daniels magic show? Well, it's much more than magic, though Daniels always impresses in that area. He has a unique comedy style and captivating presence that draws you to him. His playful interaction with the audience, extremely quick wit, and ability to win over even the stoniest faced audiences are all hallmarks of his act. To watch him work a crowd is to watch pure perfection in every sense. His timing is flawless, his personality is instantly lovable, and his magic is simply the most baffling you will see anywhere. "I like to think of my shows as 'going home' magic, comments Daniels. He explains, "During the show I want the audience to focus on being entertained and enthralled, engrossed in the show. It's not until they are on their way home that they start to think to themselves, 'I wonder how he did that.' If I accomplish that, I am very happy." Stage Magician of the Year Award - Danny Cole ----------------- Message from Enrico De La Vega Just for the record, regarding the message from Doc Eason, he failed to mention that the Stage Magician of the Year Award was given to Danny Cole at the Academy of Magical Arts Awards; a great and well-deserved achievement that should not be overlooked. ----------------- 6. Re: David Burton Banned From Black Jack Table ----------------- Message from Alvin Goodman I was not surprised to see David Burton banned from the black jack table. The Miccosukee tribe in Miami barred me from the casino because I had a deck of cards in my pocket.(Poker) We should do something about this, its not fair..how are you going to cheat if you do not deal. They will not give you a hearing, to state your point..NOT FAIR.. ----------------- 7. Harold Baughan Passed Away ----------------- Message from Don Drake (US) Harold Baughan of Hudson Mass. USA, regretfully passed away over the Easter weekend. Among others, Harold was my webmaster, and a voice on the EG, and on the Shadow Network. He also wrote on the Magic New Zealand e-zine from time to time, I believe a lot of people thought that Harold was outspoken and got into many arguments with him, but really he was a very kind, intelligent man who lived alone (except for his dog Luka) and did internet marketing form many in Mass. and other places. He started and kept up The New England Gude, and he did a marketing newsletter, monthly. Because of Harold's passing, I now am seeking a new webmaster. As for the most part, I am computer illiterate, I need someone who can simply maintain, and post additions, links and changes to my web site: http://blackartsecrets.com I will eventually learn how to do all this myself, but I am so old, that when I go to the park, the pigeons feed me! :-D I am unable to pay a lot of money, but I'm willing to give 5% of net sales. The way the site is growing this could turn out to be pretty lucrative for a good webmaster. After reading many posts on the Magic New Zealand e-zine it is my belief that here is where I'll find a magician who is really good with site. So if anyone is interested please e-mail me privately, and give me a couple of websites that you host-maintain to look at. Many thanks and I hope everyone has a great and magical day. ----------------- 8. FAB Magic Company More Than Doubling Its Size! ----------------- Message from Rick Fisher (US) Breaking News!!!!!! This year I happen to be working it also as a dealer as well. Go to: www.maesonline.org ----------------- 10. Jon Zealando’s Flashing Wand ----------------- Message from Zeke Powerz forwarded on by Jon Zealando (NZ) Wand story Jon- I just want to say the wand is awesome and I am very sorry I have not written sooner. I have been very busy and did want to make sure that I shared the following story with you. The first use I got from the wand was during a walk around Christmas Party for a paper company. It was a special show for many reasons. I had 2 new effects to try out, it was the first time I was using the flash wand at a show and I also was working a show with one of my good friends in magic.( we have done countless shows together but usually for charity or for our local ring!) After meeting a cute little girl who said she did not like magic (about 9 or 10) she never stopped watching me perform from afar. After I finished my first hour I moved out to the lobby to get a drink and "freshen up" a bit before working my last hour. The little girl asked if I was leaving! I was shocked- I asked if I could show her something special using some old coins. (The routine concludes when the "silver" coin that I placed in her hand changes to copper). After placing the "silver" coin in her hand I asked her to make a very tight fist and to not let the silver coin out. I tapped her hand with the wand and when she opened her hand she was in awe! I asked if I could show her some more magic after my break and she replied "Only if you use the wand!" Thanks for the wand and also for bringing some magic to a little girl halfway around the globe!!!! ----------------- 11. Re Jamie-G's "Revolutionary Card To Newspaper" ----------------- Message from Ted Wakai At one of our Society of American Magicians Assembly 135 Workshops, I led the members on how to make and perform a "Card to Message" trick using a newspaper or wrapping paper. I didn't like the commercial "Happy Birthday" trick that used brass fasteners which were bulky and rubber bands which kept breaking and all the cards kept falling on to the floor when opening the large sheet. So I pasted an envelope to hold the cards on to the wrapping paper and pasted or wrote the greeting such as "Thank You" or "Happy Birthday" on the other side. The secret is to have the top two corners together so as you clip those corners with your thumb and forefinger of each hand when you open the sheet. The secret of the accordion fold is to make the folds narrower and shorter than the envelope. You can get the idea of the accordion fold if you have seen the "No Tear Paper to Flag" trick. Pasting the envelope near the bottom takes advantage of gravity to let it drop when opening the sheet. For ease and smoothness of performance, I fold the corners diagonally on top of each other with the top corner slightly smaller than the bottom corner so I can pinch the corners readily. If you have just one card, you won't need an envelope. Just paste that card on to the wrapping paper. Because newsprint tears so readily, for a more reusable paper, I have used the slick, heavier advertising inserts from the newspaper. If it's a birthday, I use a birthday wrapping paper and paste a sheet of paper with "Happy Birthday John" written on it and then remove the "Greeting and present it to John. I've made variations of this trick for "That's All Folks" and various holidays etc. using commercial greeting cards. Any questions, give me a holler. Ted Wakai, The WIZARD of OX-nard ----------------- 12. Card To News Paper Effect - Shawn Farquhar ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) Fellow readers of Magic New Zealand I was contacted by fellow Canadian magician Shawn Farquhar about my card to newspaper effect. I thought I was the first to come up with this effect but Shawn has corrected me in this matter. Shawn in fact in the early 80's came out with his version of the card to news paper effect and won Original Effect at the PCAM, as well as the S.A.M. and I.B.M. Gold Medal competition. As I have had no other knowledge of this effect to be in the magic world until Shawn had informed me of it, I would like to thank Shawn in correcting me in this matter and also giving me some history of the effect as well. I do believe that the effect from the card to newspaper to be the same, but in the end results the effect also to be different in some ways also. In Shawn’s version of card to newspaper he produce's a dove while in my version you (with special gimmick) can produce almost anything. In my show after I produce the card and turn it in to a newspaper I then produce one at a time 3 to 4 music CD's then from the newspaper I produce one at a time four different colored silks than a do a very big money (bill) production from the newspaper as well, so as you can see same effect but the end results to be different. Nevertheless I understand that the magic world is very big and thank Shawn bringing in this to my attention and acting like a true professional...JAMIE-G ----------------- 13. Impromptu Lighter Levitation - Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) Effect: Magician takes a borrowed lighter and levitates it in between his hands in mid air. Then he returns the lighter from the spectator. Props: Vernet magnetic thumb tip and an every day normal lighter. Method: Magnetic thumb tip goes on whichever hand you use most. In my case it is my right hand. Take the lighter and point the head or top of the lighter towards you while it is laying flat in the opposite hand that you use. You are going to use your right hand to cross over the left one that has the lighter. The thumb tip will automatically catch onto the lighter. It will be held in a position that when you lower your hand that was holding the lighter it now looks as if the lighter is floating in mid air. If you move your thumb close to your fingers it will look as if it is floating upwards as well. Note: The Vernet thumb tip is made in a way that when you hold something to it, it automatically sets itself at the palm part of your thumb. If you try to make the tip yourself then it may not work as well. Most lighters have the metal tops so that you can use anyone of them for this trick. Patter: (Jim Pace and Jamie-G) The worlds greatest weight loss system. First of all you have to borrow a lighter from a spectator. You tell your spectator that the lighter is the worlds greatest weight loss system. Light the lighter and say that it just burns the calories right off you. You tell them that this system really works. You get then to take their finger and rub the top of the lighter. Then you tell them "Now don't you feel a little lighter?" Matter of fact this lighter is so light that it can float between my hands. In fact it is so light that it can defy gravity. Then you return the lighter back to the spectator. Special Tip: If you do a lot of work for adults here is another way to promote yourself. There are small stickers that you can get from a business supply store that you can put your information on. If you can get a bunch of lighters for cheap then you can put the sticker on the lighter and hand it to your spectator. Now the spectator has a lighter and your information that they will remember every time they light a cigarette. Vernet Tip: Most magic shops sell them. They cost about $5 and they are worth it. It comes with the magnet and some double stick tape to hold it in place. In my tip I used some Stic Tac and it holds it in place a little more secure. ----------------- 14. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 46 ALAN HOROBIN - and I find a long lost Friend! In 1967, I did another tour/run with Alan and the two Peters around the north of the North Island of New Zealand (I’ve still got the original poster). In a small town (can’t remember which) on the tour I met a young man who had come out from the audience to stand on top of me when I was doing my ‘human filling in a bed of nails sandwich’ segment. After the show he came and introduced himself. He was an amateur magician, his name, KEN WARD. Ken, a typical New Zealander, had lived and worked all over the place, spent some time on Honiara Island in the British Solomon Islands, where, among the other things he learnt how to skin-dive. He finally settled down in London, England. In 1987 Ken turned up at a club near his home, where we were performing. I had no hope of recognising him, but he had an old photo from all those years ago which showed him standing on top of me, when I was doing my aforementioned nails bit (God, we both looked like kids). We became very good friends, and Veronica and I would often park our rather large American Recreational Vehicle (Motor Home) outside his home, and stay for a day or two, talking Magic, of course. Ken was very well known on the London magic scene, and was also a Magic dealer for some big names - Fantasio being one of them. Sadly, Ken died about 2 years ago (another precious memory, eh, Burns)! Getting back to Alan Horobin, that North Island tour of New Zealand was the last time we were to work together, as Alan became very busy with a major project; he built, and became part owner and Manager of Marineland, which opened in 1968 and situated just north of Auckland City, at a holiday resort called Orewa. We would all go up there to talk about the good old days with Alan and his most beautiful and charming wife Frances. Frances was born on Thursday Island, which is in the Torres Strait off the North East Coast of Cape York Peninsula, at the most northern tip of Australia. Occasionally, when Alan would come down to Auckland City, he would give me a phone-call from some pub where I would meet up with him for a drink or two or three or - - -. Alan liked to have a drink with his mates - don’t we all! One night, Alan phoned me from the ‘Great Northern’, (a very nice Hotel of International standard, - I performed there often.) “Tom, come on in for a drink” “I can't do, Al, - you sound like you've had a ‘couple’, already” “I sure have, but come on in any way” “Sorry Al. I'm really tied up at the moment” “Well, I might just as well head back to Orewa, then!” “Alan, do me a favour - book a room for the night, and we’ll see you tomorrow” “Yeah, okay - - -“, HE DIDN’T! About a mile from Orewa, there is a narrow bridge -----!!! I am holding in my hand, a cutting, with the heading; ‘MARINELAND MAN DIES IN ACCIDENT!’ then a short story of his life followed by Quote” Mr Horobin is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. The funeral service will be held today at Devonport”. It was packed! Alan was only 46! All these years, I have had to live with the ‘IF ONLY’ I had gone to the Great Northern that night ----- there has been an awful lot of' ‘If Only’s’ in my life - in everybody’s I guess! Alan died 29th July 1975 - Veronica’s birthday. It was a very sad day! Peter Taylor died in 1997 (of cancer) Rusty Greaves also died in 1997 - that leaves ‘Newbs’ and me - and we’re not too ‘Crash Hot’! Think I will go and have some of my ‘MAGIC’ medicine, and a Jack Daniels, of course! Since I wrote this, my dear friend ‘NEWBS’, has passed away! Born 20th. Feb. 1925 Died 5th. Nov. 2003 Oh dear, Tis’ only lil’ old me left! (Wed. 11th 2004) Page 47 Received an e-mail last week from an old friend; Murray Hobson. Murray and I met in 1963/64 in Waihi, when I was performing during the Christmas season, for Johnny Carter, who promoted shows and dances all around that area. Johnny owns Racehorses these days, as well as a Plumbing shop, exports sheepskins to Europe, and God knows what else he’s up to. I phoned Murray; we had a long chat and a good laugh about how I would drive down from Auckland to Te Aroha/Waihi for Johnny, do 3 shows in one night, and then drive back to Auckland, because the bastard was too tight to provide accommodation, and to add insult to injury, got paid peanuts, while Johnny became rich from his various promotions; ain’t that the way with Agents/promoters? Apparently Johnny has some ‘hard case’ stories to relate about me, I’ve yet to contact him. God, I’m desperately trying to get out of the 60’s era, but, there’s more to come, lots more! Anyhow, Murray, (who together with his wife Margaret, still lives in Auckland, New Zealand), was working for Johnny Carter in Waihi, or as Murray put it ‘it was more like a paid holiday’. We became great friends, and he would occasionally assist me at various gigs, in those wonderful, not quite, lost in the mists of time, days. We even put a small tour together, with Murray, myself, Rusty Greaves, and Val Proctor, a vocalist - (I’ve got the original poster of that as well, from my aluminium trunk which truly seems to be a bottomless pit.) The consequence of this ‘out of the blue’ contact is that Murray, and Margaret, are flying over here to the UK in two week’s time, to visit. By the time I’ve drained his memory banks, I should have reams of tales to relate for the Saga. It’s going to be one hell of a reunion after, what, 30 years? Ye Gods! I’d better stock up - on hangover cures! (These two pages were originally published in 2002, and reprinted 2004) ---------------- 15.
