I was very surprised to see other magic publications using existing registered Trade Marks as a name for their publication! This could leave them open to legal ramifications in the future! -------------- Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com ----------------- 2. IBM Members We Need Your Help! ----------------- Message from Phil Willmarth - Editor The Linking Ring Magazine International mailing of our journal has always been a problem, the issues typically arriving a month to four months after being mailed here in the United States. Up to now, any faster method of sending The Linking Ring overseas was simply more than we could afford without raising our non-US dues which we did not want to do. In September, we believed we had a solution to the problem that we could afford through DHL/Deutschpost, the world's largest mail expediter. So we tried it. A reply card was inserted in a sample of that mailing by our printer. Those who responded did report a meaningful improvement in delivery time. However, much to our surprise (and eventual horror), we began to get complaints of non-delivery. Since many members did not expect to get their September issue until October, or even late November, we slowly came to realize that for some reason or reasons still unknown, some members were not getting any of their issues - from September through December. All replacement issues are now gone, and we are still getting complaints like "What's wrong, a lot of our Ring members have not been getting The Linking Ring?" Or, "I just realized I am missing four issues." The good news: DHL/Deutschpost on their own initiative, agreed to send the January international issues out air mail with the result that members in England, for example, had their January issues the first week in January (a three to four week improvement in delivery time). In addition, working with our printer's mailing expert, they have agreed to continue air delivery at a cost we can afford, so we will be able to provide much improved delivery to our international members. The bad news: We still have no idea how many members (who and where they are) did not get the September, October, November and December issues. If you are missing any of these issues, we need to know: 1. Your name, address, and membership number. 2. The specific issues you are missing. 3. Whether you contacted us for replacement, when, and for what issue(s). 4. Your email address if you have one (so we can follow up if necessary). Please get this information to our headquarters office the fastest way possible (email: office@magician.org), fax: 314-845-9220 or, ideally, air mail to: International Executive Secretary, 11155C South Towne Square, St. Louis, MO 63123-7823. Ring Secretaries can help a great deal by collecting this information and sending it all in at once. This information is being put on our website, on Ring 2100, and on the Internet Magic New Zealand. Notice to all Members While we intend to reprint these issues, this is a considerable expense. If you do not normally save your issues, have all four issues intact, and are willing to donate them to our international members, please send all four via media mail to our printer: IPC Print Services Attn: Kerry Still 2180 Maiden Lane Saint Joseph, MI 49085-9596 The I.B.M. and our international members will greatly appreciate your donation. Please do it immediately. Thanks so much! Phil Willmarth ----------------- 3. S.A.M. Happy New Year To All Magicians Around The World! ----------------- Message from Tony Wilson - IBM International President 2004 - 2005 I have just returned from a 10 day magical adventure visiting my President-Elect Roger Miller and his lovely wife Shiela in Kansas City where Roger and I managed to visit the Allen Press, the US Toy Company, and Ring 129 for a Ring meeting where I performed my 21st presentation since becoming President of the IBM last July. It was great to meet members of this Ring who had been awarded superior quality Ring status by the IBM. Roger and I also drove to Granite City, Illinois to meet with the current President of the Society of American Magicians, John Apperson and his wife Virginia where we had a two day “summit” meeting covering such topics such as convention dates and venues, liability insurance for magicians, joint ethics statement between both organisations and the possibility of the SAM and IBM combining in 2009 to run a joint FISM Congress somewhere in the USA if we were successful with a bid in 2006 and the FISM Statutes allow this to happen. In those two days we were also able to visit the International office of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Society of American Magicians (within the same afternoon!) and attend an IBM Ring 1 meeting for my 22nd presentation and to meet Ring 1 members. On the four hour drive back to Kansas City (in the snow!) we were also able to visit Kirk de Weese who owns and runs the Magic Supply Company in Blue Springs, Misssouri. Kirk also manages the IBM server and merchanise sales as well as the IBM website, provides an email service for magicians and contributes to the Ring 2100 website, the Magic Youth International web site, and the linkring@magician.org email address. Feel free to visit his website at http://micro.com/ibmmembers.html and sign up on line. Refer to his advertisement on page 39 of the December “Linking Ring.” During our short visit to Kirk’s premises he was able to action the contents of my monthly President’s Page linked to the IBM web site on http:www.magician.org This is now available to all people visiting the IBM web page with a link and will be changed to reflect my monthly column each month when the “Linking Ring” is published. Kirk also gave me a souvenir T Shirt number 1 that he has produced for sale at the IBM Reno Convention this year. Thank you Kirk for all that you do for the IBM! On Thursday January 7th Roger and I flew to Reno for the IBM Mid Year Board Meeting the next day. Roger and David Sandy were charged (by me) with providing entertainment for the night prior to the Board Meeting and after the Board Meeting. Over 30 Board Members and their partners were able to enjoy “The Voice of Magic” Darren Romeo show and the Larry Wilson Wonderland show (at their own expense of course) over the two nights we were all in Reno. Sunday January 9th I flew home via LA and Fiji after a magic packed week full of adventure, travel and a feeling of accomplishment of what the Board of the IBM had accomplished during their eight hour meeting at the Reno Hilton. I am excited about the Convention this June as the Reno Hilton has all the “bells and whistles” for an exciting Convention with the 3,000 seat theatre and all amenities on site. The 20 plus New Zealand magicians that are planning to attend to support me will have a ball as well as the other 1000 plus registrants that are coming. See you there! ----------------- 7. The Merlins Invitational Close Up Convention ----------------- Message from Barry Govan (Aust) Just to let you know that a new close up convention after the style of the FFFF one that Obie runs is being held at The Grainery Lane Theatre in Ballarat on Sunday February 20th 2005 from 10am - 10pm. The title of the convention is "The Merlins Invitational Close Up Convention." So named because "Merlins" and "Babushka" restaurant was the first restaurant in Australia to feature magic five nights a week in the 1970's and 80's. (Steve will let you know that the "Copper Canyon Restaurant" in Sydney that Alan Carmichael worked at did it earlier but I don't think they were five nights a week.) Guest of honour is Peter Gibbins the original owner who will talk on how it evolved, the magicians that worked there, and what he looked when hiring a performer. The convention is strictly invitation only, this is done simply to limit the numbers to allow the lecturers to do workshop sessions with small groups. It will also be the first time in Australia where registrants will receive a free DVD containing the basics of the material that will be presented by the lecturers. It is also the first time for many years where an Australian convention has no overseas guests. ----------------- 8. Adventures Across Canada ----------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) After almost 90 shows in 6 weeks the show "Illusions - Magic'n'Miracles" produced by Murray Hatfield and Teresa is over. What a wonderful and amazing experience, my first time traveling in weather below -30! The tour featured Murray Hatfield and his wife Teresa, Oscar Munoz from Texas, Dan Sperry from Chicago, four dancers from Calgary and a team of lighting and sound experts and stage manager, and of course yours truly Paul Romhany with my Charlie Chaplin act. There were many highlights on this tour and I will name but a few .. in no particular order. 1) The Bus: You haven't traveled in style until you've spent time traveling between gigs on this rock star like tour bus. The bus sleeps twelve people in their own bunks complete with own television, two separate lounge areas with leather couches, a fridge always stocked and a table where the 'geeks', myself included, would show each other magic tricks and play on our computers. 2) Theatres: The highlight for me was performing in Victoria at a theatre built in 1905 where Charlie Chaplin himself performed when he came to North America in the early part of the 1900's with the vaudeville tour that brought him to the USA. The final two days of shows were in large 5000 seat arenas and each of the last night shows were packed. Standing on a stage that seated that many people was truly an incredible buzz! 3) The weather: Never having traveled in such cold weather I didn't know what to expect. One day after leaving my gear in the locker under the bus (where it gets below -40) I opened up my make-up kit only to find everything frozen! My contact lenses were frozen solid as was any liquid such as contact lense solution, my appearing hat stand pole cracked due to the freezing cold as were my Charlie Chaplin shoes (luckily they thawed out). 4) The People: The best part of course would be meeting all these wonderful people and making new friends. Traveling with such world class magicians was a huge inspiration and honor to work with such talented people. Everybody from the dancers to technicians where all professional and top in their field. It made for a very tight and enjoyable show. Now the tour is over with many wonderful experiences it's time for my next project. At the end of February I will be onboard another cruise ship traveling around South America for a few months. ----------------- 9. Illusions - Magic’n’Miracles 2004-05 Review ----------------- Message from Andrew Gerard Take three guest magicians from around the world, mix it with a team of modern dancers, add Canada’s finest illusion team and a touch of lighting and sound experts you will then have one of North America’s most popular and longest running touring Illusion shows. This years show entitled “Illusions - Magic ‘n’ Miracles” produced by Murray Hatfield and starring Murray Hatfield and Teresa is in its 20th year touring across Canada playing to sold out houses. With close to ninety shows in six weeks and 27 cities the tour starts in Eastern Canada making its way to Western Canada. This year the guest acts include New Zealand born magician Paul Romhany who is now based in Canada, from Texas, IBM Gold Cups champion Oscar Munoz and the very creative and original dove act of Dan Sperry from Chicago. The show starts with a modern dance routine followed by the production of Murray Hatfield from a Vampire Illusion. After an introduction and audience warm up, Murray and Teresa perform a very fast paced substitution trunk. The rhythm and timing they have developed for this routine breaths life back in to this classic illusion. Throughout the show you can’t help but notice the chemistry between Murray and Teresa on stage and how well they work together. The first guest act Paul Romhany is introduced and from the moment he walks onstage the audience is captivated as Paul brings to life Charlie Chaplin. Paul is the spitting image of Chaplin and has all his movements and characteristics down. Young and old alike are taken in with this very original, charming and innovative act. The act includes all original material finishing with a wonderful floating broom routine set to the music Smile by Charlie Chaplin. I came away from the show wanting to watch a Chaplin movie again. Murray then performs his coin pail routine with a boy from the audience giving him a chance to really connect with the audience. The audience laps up the humor and interaction between the young boy and Murray. Oscar Munoz is introduced and has the audience in the palm of his hands from the minute he walks on stage as they instantly warm to his Latino flair and it is obvious from watching Oscar’s performance that he is a student of theatre. The day I saw the show there were over 2000 people in the theatre and to hear them all belly laughing so loudly was a wonderful feeling. Oscar performs a very clever and funny rope routine followed by a lot of ‘bits of business with a girl from the audience leading in to his version of the ‘balloon in the bag’ routine. This is a classic example of a performer taking standard items and really making them his own. He then performs one of the best routines using a dove bag I have seen. His comedic timing is impeccable and the family audiences just love him. After a black light dance number and an instant production of three assistants the show featured a break-dancer who performed some incredible moves and added something unique to an illusion show. Murray then performs a series of effects including a glove to streamer routine, production and vanish of a duck followed by the Blamo Box production. The choreography of the show is of a very high standard and everything flows from one to another. A nice touch to the show is when Murray thanks Teresa for her hard work throughout the year helping with the writing and the production of the show. This is the lead in to how they first met and their double routine for the dancing hanky. Next comes a wonderful routine as Murray performs the ‘smallest illusion he knows’ as he borrows a finger ring from a lady in the audience and vanishes it as his finger tips in a flash of fire. After some comedy byplay, Irving the duck makes his appearance as he is put in to a canon and fired to a box making his re-appearance with the borrowed finger ring. Irving is then taken and turned in to Cody the Wonder Dog, Murray and Teresa’s little four-year-old Eskipoo dog. The next series of illusions are all performed in unison and under the guise of how Murray and Teresa audition their dancers for the show. The series of illusions are called “The Test” and include “The Twister”, “The Stretcher” and “Compressed”. It is a very nice way for Murray to introduce his dancers to the audience and present three great illusions. The final guest act of the show is Dan Sperry from Chicago. He is a past winner of the Lance Burton Award and it is very easy to see why he is considered one of the top dove performers in the world. Highly original and slightly bizarre best describe Dan’s act. Dan’s act is face paced, high in energy and has some very innovative and original handling on dove techniques. His color change dove and split production really gets the crowd cheering. Bringing an element of theatrics to his show Dan Sperry is certainly one of magic’s up and coming hot magicians. The final illusion of the show is called ‘The Robot’ and in this illusion Murray tells the story of being a little boy overcoming his childhood nightmares. This leads in to a highly original version of Disembodied Princess and with the help of special lighting and theatrical effects brings this illusions to a new level. The 90-minute show went by very quickly and was certainly one of the best Illusion and Variety shows I have seen. The technical side of the show with the lighting and music was a show within itself and really helped enhance the illusions and all the acts. ----------------- 10. The Magic Foil System - Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) Hello readers of Magic New Zealand. A few years ago came up with a new magic system. Well I just came out with the effects just over a year ago but I have been doing this style of magic for over 15 years or more. The magic system I'm talking about is “The Magic Foil System". I first came out with this system on I.B.M. ring 2100 and than I came out with it here for the Magic New Zealand. I have been writing for Magic New Zealand for a while now and it has been very enjoyable thanks very much for Alan Watson. What I would like to know is if the readers of Magic New Zealand specially the newer readers is if they would like me to put a chapter of magic together for a few weeks about this wonderful new magic system? Examples of effects are melting silver and gold coin, as well as fork and spoons a new way of doing close up magic this list will open a new book in magic. After getting to know this system you will be able to do magic never even heard of. If you would like to see is again with other new effects on this topic please e-mail me at :jamiegmagic@yahoo.com and also let me know the you read magic New Zealand so I can get to work on this special project. Just F.Y.I. I have magicians from across the world using this system since I came out with it. It is a way of me giving back to magic. ----------------- 11. Wanting To Buy A Suitcase Table ----------------- Message from Trevor Sills (NZ) tjsills@maxnet.co.nz Do you know anywhere in New Zealand where I can buy a suitcase table? Even if it's second-hand, I don't mind - I can easily give it a face lift. Otherwise, if you can't buy them in New Zealand, is there anyone who would have the plans to build one? Thanks for you help and I look forward to hearing from you shortly. ----------------- 12. Where Can I Get Some Vent Scripts? ----------------- Message from Bill Watson (NZ) nostaw@slingshot.co.nz Fiona is over in Brighton England just now, and wants to know if we know of anyone there, or anywhere, where she can get some Vent scripts? She has been to the Comedy Club and I think she would like to have a go there. If you can help, it would be appreciated. Sam Powers And Christof!! ----------------- Message from Christof (Aust) The two guest performers (my atrocious typing had me write "gusset performers" - not at all!!) from the Australian leg of the 2004 World festival of Magic are reunited for a week. Christof!! and Sam Powers are performing together this week at Castle Towers mall in Sydney. After the usual sight line issues had been cleverly solved by Sam, and treated very co-operatively by a helpful centre management, wanting the best from their performers, we have a lovely intimate performing space which feels much more like a theatre and much less like an aircraft hangar. The audiences are having a ball with this lovely combination of grace, charm, skill and class, on the one hand, and utter stupidity on the other. You work out which is which. Shows at 11.00 and 1.00 from January 10 -14. ----------------- 15. FAB Magic Inc. invites YOU ----------------- Message from Rick Fisher (US) The Biggest Magic Part Of 2005! Peter May & Guy Cater In Car Accident ----------------- Message from Guy Cater (NZ) It’s been a month but seems so much shorter. Cynthia and I left NZ on the 16th December for Singapore. A day later than we should have because of the delay in getting our passports back from the Indian High Commission in Wellington. Lost two gigs in Mumbai at the large IT University there as the Indian Commission wasted absolutely no time in doing absolutely nothing to organise our visas – despite the $230 fee that we had to send by bankers cheque weeks before hand. Will be talking very hard to them when the Embassy opens. So, instead of four days in India we had four days in Malaysia on holiday and Cynthia went mad with the cheap shopping there. In fact she saved so much money I’m nearly broke. Back in Singapore on the 24th December (missed the terrible events of Boxing Day by two days) we had a rather exciting but unwanted situation in a car driven by our agent Ivan Singh. Also in the car were Australian Magician Peter May and his lovely Singaporean wife Michelle, and Comedy Magician Robert Strong from the USA. Ivan let his attention become diverted for just a moment and he ran into the back of a parked car. The jolt was fairly hard and it pushed our car into the lane next to us and we were then hit by a taxi. Luckily pride and pocket were the only ones hurt. Cynthia had never been to Singapore before and thoroughly enjoyed herself. For over a week we spent each day acting as tourists and the nights as performers. Were fairly tired by the time we got to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates for our annual New Years Eve gig at the Dubai Marine Beach Resort and Spa. This year there were no illusionists on the show I MC’d … the theme was Moulin Rouge and I played and dressed as Mr Fitler from the movie. We had a Can Can ensemble from the Ukraine – twenty ladies and two men. The costumes were remarkably brief with loads of feathers and sparkling bikinis – and the girls looked pretty too!! Seriously – the group were worldclass and went over real well, as did a ten-piece group from South Africa – four musicians and six singers. They are called Denim and sound like a mix of a boy band (you know Westlife, Boyzone etc) and real native African with the heavy beat of the drums. A juggler from Rome, local belly dancers, a band from Cuba, Two Spanish Guitarists and an extremely popular Arabic band and Arabic singer made up the rest of the cast. Cynthia and I took a week off to holiday before returning home and explored the souks (but Guy, this gold is so cheap!!! Look at the money I’m saving), went on a dessert safari and generally saw a lot of the Emirates. After such a hectic time, it is nice to be home for ordinary, everyday gigs. ----------------- 18. Magic Touch - Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) Effect: The magician is in a crowd of people. The magician tells one spectator to close his eyes and hold out his arm. The magician then tells the spectator while his eyes are closed to let him know when he feels the magician touch his arm. At this point the magician than rubs his hands together and places both hands on each side of the spectators arm. The spectator says that he felt the magician touch his arm but the magician never touched the spectators arm at all. The magician just place each hand on both sides of the spectators arm. Everyone that is watching this effect happen knows that the magician never touch the spectators even though the helper would swear that the magician did. Props: A spectator willing to help. And a package of invisible elastic loops. Note: The loops can stretch up to 25cm so this gives you a long enough thread line to easily do this effect. Try not to over stretch the loop because the stress will break it. Just be careful in using the loops once you are use to using them it will be up hill from there. Method: Loops are very easy to use. I start out with the loop on my right wrist and while in rubbing your hand together I drag my left thumb under my right wrist making the thread line (loop line). It is this thread line that touches the spectators arm. What you are doing here is making your loop line once this is done you just now put your hands between the spectators arm and the loop line will cross over the spectators arm. When the spectators eye's are closed it feels like the magician had touched his arm with his finger. Note-#2: When you have finished the effect by using the magic touch you just let the thread go with your left thumb and the loop will snap back to your right wrist ready to do the next effect with the loops or it is ready for when you need it. Patter: Hello everyone I would like to show everyone here something special. I have learned how to do placement by way of using heat. I learned this from an old judo Master that used heat touch to help heal injuries that would happen in the judo class. The great judo master (fol sum guy) has taught this to me. It all starts by me rubbing my hand together to generate the heat. (at this time rubbing your hand together and making your loop line). Note: I have been doing this effect for a long time now and let me tell you the spectators go "WILD" and this effect can be done for any age's as well as a small or large group. Every time I use magic with loops I do this routine and if you don't believe me give it a try for yourself it is really awesome. If you want to blow the spectators away give this effect a try I know you will love doing it as well as I do. ----------------- 19. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page - 35 At any typical, good old Kiwi Style, booze-up/party-bash there is always, at least one guitar-player present, and you can bet your bottom dollar that ‘Look What You’ve Done’ will be sung by all and sundry. I watched a film, produced and set in New Zealand the other night, on Satellite, called ‘ONCE WERE WARRIORS’. In it, there is a party scene; I’ll give you just one guess as to what they were singing… The end credits thanked JOHNNY COOPER for the song! ‘KIWI’ - a flightless New Zealand bird, also slang for a New Zealander. Johnny was way ahead of his time - where others would have loudspeakers on the roof of their car, Johnny had his hidden behind the front grill, with amplifier and microphone wired up to the dashboard. Cruising down the main drag of a town, spruiking ‘IT’S TOOONIIIITE! JOHNNY COOPERS…………. WITH SPECIAL GUEST ARTIST …………. IT’S TOOONITE…’ WOW! With Johnny Cooper style promotions, it was always a ‘Sell-Out’! Johnny decided to put ‘THE AMAZING ORCHANTÉ -IT’S A FUN-TASTIC’- SHOW, on the road. The first half (around an hour), consisted of a Rock ‘n Roll band, a Singer, and myself performing the Magic, Yoga, and Mime Acts, in between band sets, and the Singer. After the interval, the entire second half (an hour and a half long) was taken up with my Hypnotism show. Ever the promoter, Johnny always advertised that after the show, ‘DANCE, WITH TOP, LIVE BAND… (The same one from the show -‘hey, we’ve got a Rock ‘n Roll band - Use Em’). I remember that the drummer in the band was a very young lad from Kawerau (a purpose-built Paper Mill town). His name - JOHN ROWLES - NOW A NEW ZEALAND ‘SUPER STAR’, with World Wide recording hits! These days, he lives in Hawaii. After the show had finished, and the audience had left, everybody would pitch in and move all the seating, placing it around the hall/Theatre walls. Within 30 minutes, when the front doors were once again thrown open, the people, And Their Money - came pouring back in! Johnny taught me much in my early ‘Show-Biz’ days. “I am proud to have played a small part in your life, Johnny - you sure played a LARGE part in mine”! Thank you my old Friend, I’ll never forget you! ------------------ 20.
