It will now be up to his son Mike to carry on the Gallo magic. ----------------- 3. John Calvert And Tammy Okay In Florida ----------------- Message from Walter Zaney Blaney (US) Dear friends in magic: Good news. I had a cell phone call tonight from John Calvert. He said it has been almost impossible to call out from Florida due to the heavy phone traffic. He wanted me to pass on the word to his many friends that he and Tammy survived the four hurricanes that hit Florida. It has been very tiring preparing his yacht, Magic Castle II, to withstand these horrible events. But his boat made it safely through the storms too. John said there is destruction everywhere, all around them, and it is so sad to see it all. He and Tammy are tired and weary, as are all Floridians, but they consider that they are lucky indeed to have survived. I am thankful too, as the Calverts are among the all time greats in the history of magic, and anyone who has seen their show, or who knows John and Tammy personally, will certainly agree. ----------------- 4. IBM International President Tony Wilson’s Magical Adventures ----------------- Message from Tony Wilson - IBM International President 2004 - 2005 I had been trying to make contact with English speaking magicians in the Czech Republic before leaving New Zealand on June 12th but to no avail. A few weeks ago I read on Alan Watson’s E Zine about a magical gathering held in the Czech Republic, out of Prague posted by John Gallo. I asked Alan for John’s email address, wrote to him and had a reply from Eva Veju wife and partner of a well known professional magician (Eve n’ Alan) who died of cancer in the last year or so. Eva kindly offered to arrange a meeting for Mary and me with Prague magicians during our three days in Prague at the end of August. Eva also received Alan’s E Zine and was born in the Czech Republic and lives there as well as in Sweden. She had one day free to join us before flying back to Sweden and helped us immensely with setting up a magical two days in Prague. Thank you so much Eva! Our early morning flight from Heathrow (up at 4.10am!) to Frankfurt was uneventful as was our connecting flight with Lufthansa to Prague. We had arranged a transfer to our pension in the centre of Prague and once unpacked managed to see most of the main tourist sights by foot from 3pm to 8pm. Eva rang us that night to discuss what she had arranged. She picked us up at 10am the next day and took us by car into the outer suburbs to deliver a television set to her friend Hana Psenickova who has a son Andrew aged 18 who is an accomplished young magician in Prague. Eva then took Mary and I and Hana to lunch at a lovely restaurant before we went back to Hana’s home and had coffee and cakes and to meet Hana’s husband and admire their home. Her son Andrew was busy with a tech rehearsal for the show we were going to see that afternoon. We were so interested to visit this Czech family in their one year old home and left from there to travel back into Prague to see a professional magic show put on by members of the KIM Magic Club who mainly consist of active Junior magicians under the age of 21. The show lasted over 1.5 hours and was well balanced and video enhanced. The standard was very high and, (in spite of the language barrier for us) enjoyed by all present. After the show was over several of the performers met with us all informally where I entertained them with my chocolate box of close up magic especially selected for the four month trip. Numerous photos were taken of course and I was also able to obtain a colour poster of the show from the theatre box office. As Eva was not available to meet with us the next day she had kindly arranged for Andrew and his mother Hana to take us to meet with senior members of the Prague Academy of Magic at the home of Ing. Mila Trnka (aged 77). When we arrived we met Vaverka Karel, Doc.Zdenek Dlabal dr.mag.ved, Obchodni Tiskarny and Marviv Jaroslav Randacek. A table had been set up in the garden with food and drink laid out and after a short introduction the magic started and continued almost continuously for about two hours before some rain made us relocate to the basement magic room in Mila’s home where the magic continued. Andrew was our English/Czech and Czech/English translator for the whole afternoon and did a fantastic job to clarify patter and instructions. Of interest to the older magicians would be that our host Mila Trnka was regular visitor and featured performer at IBM British Ring 25 Conventions in the mid 1960’s and was also featured at The Magic Circle 1965 Jubilee Show in London that I attended while living in the UK 1965/1966! From some printed matter he gave me I also noted that Davenport’s sold several of his items in the 1960’s including “Colour Changing Dress” and “Magazine Novelty”. Mila also told me he also performed full magic act involving ties. As we had another early start the next morning to fly to Madrid via Frankfurt, Hana and Andrew drove us back to our pension so we could repack and prepare for our 13 days in Spain with a rental car and “no fixed abode” This will be a 13 day break from meeting magicians until we arrive in Malta. It will also be used for catching up on IBM business on our lap top with the assistance of global roaming. See you next week! ----------------- 5. Magic Comments On Patents ----------------- Message from Bev Bergeron (US) Further comments to Bruce Chadwick's and Paul Daniel’s comments concerning Patents. They were both on the money. I’m not a lawyer; however, believe it or not I took a couple of courses on the subject of patents, copyrights, registrations and trademarks at a state university. But better than that, I learned like many of us have done, through experience – the hard way. Forty years ago I learned that many companies had refused to patent technologies, because like was stated by others, in the USA, a patent does not stop one from making minor changes and marketing the knowledge. I found out that many companies had started putting false markings on their instruments like: On a thermometer the markings would not be Fahrenheit or Centigrade but have a scale from 1 to 50. Also the markings on electrical parts, like a diode, would be mismarked. I know of a major company that blew up an early version of a wireless microphone when not returning it to the builder for repairs, but took on that mission. Bad choice. The reason for the thermometer not having the real readings was to stop an employee telling a rival at what temperature something was cooked or prepared at. As was stated in the USA the law will come down against ones who try to manipulate the patent laws. The Dupont Company many years ago bought the rights to Cellophane and than patented a fake formula. The USA courts took the rights away from Dupont and made cellophane pubic domain. A book could be written about how some magicians used patenting illusions to their advantage. Thurston’s lawyer patented a very small “improvement” on the Asrah Illusion. Many magicians now think that Thurston was the inventor of the Asrah not Servais LeRoy. I have a feeling that the patent was used many times to frighten off performers from theatres that Thurston wished to play, but showing the patent to a theatre manager and implying that action would be taken if Thurston’s rival would be hired. No one ever questioned the rights of Thurston’s patent. On our TV series “The Magic Land of Allakazam” we had a similar attack over the Selbit Stretching Illusions. He had been dead at that time about 30 years. A magician sent a letter to CBS-TV stating that he was the sole owner of the illusion and they would be sued if they allowed us (Mark Wilson) performing it. I told Mark that I could prove in any court that the person writing the letter had no exclusive rights to the illusion – it was public domain. Mark did not want to bring CBS into the argument, so we just developed a better version of the illusion. As stated, patents are not the solution, however, a copyright may be. As a young magician I learned that Cardini wrote a short play in which a character performed his act. The act was thus described in the play and was copyrighted. I took his idea and copyrighted both my Golf and my Bottle/Fountain acts. I also registered them with the Writers Guild of the West. They are stronger than a copyright when it comes to movies or TV. In the past I have developed scores of magic illusions and hundreds of magical effects. All I’ve ever asked was that my name be kept on the effect. I even went so far as to ask a magic dealer who had just bought a magic company to keep my name on several illusions that the former proprietor had built for us. I was told: “I bought the company and it is mine and all the illusions with it.” Though many of my creations are on the market – maybe one has my name on it. Two months ago I released four manuscripts of different acts that I’m performed in the past. Two of them are the Golf and Bottle/Fountain Acts. In the Bottle/Fountain manuscripts, I have included a new version to presenting the Multiplying Bottles. It is copyrighted. I wonder how long it will take someone to try to put their name on my work? Proposed TV Exposure In Mexico ----------------- Message from Walter Zaney Blaney (US) The Fox Network has just sold the Valentino Masked Magician series to the main TV channel in Mexico. The magicians there are bravely trying to keep the series off the air, lead by Sissy & Jaramy, professional magicians in Mexico City. They have met with the TV producers, and these producers want to know why they should not air these programs. They also want to know if magicians around the world really care about magic exposure as much as Sissy and Jaramy say they do. Here is a chance for every magician receiving this message to write a short letter of protest, in a dignified way, and send it to this email address ASAP: mcastillejos@televisa.com.mx If you are an officer, past or present, in a magic society, please sign the letter with your name and office. Please also copy your letter to: sissy7212@hotmail.com Let's all help out our fellow magician brothers in the great country of Mexico. They are willing to fight against exposure and need all our help. It's a great chance to show there really is a brotherhood that exists amongst magicians around the world.and so easy to do. Instant Inflation By Peter Marucci ----------------- Message from Peter Marucci (Canada) Effect: You show a one-cent coin, put it in your left hand, and prattle on about how this won't buy much anymore. "That's due to inflation," you say, to generally blank stares. "Here, let me explain." You reach in your pocket and take out a magnifying glass, which you place directly over the penny in your left hand. "You see, now you need a magnifying glass to make a penny look as big as it used to." Open your left hand fully and show the glass over a penny that is now as large as the glass. "Of course," you say, "in the olden days, you didn't need a magnifying glass; a penny seemed to go farther (remove the glass, showing a jumbo penny) because it really was bigger." Drop the big penny on the table and let the audience examine it (if you're into that - and trust them). Working: Obviously, no big deal here - but very effective for table workers and bar magicians: It's short, quick, to the point, and magical. You'll need a penny, a magnifying glass and a jumbo penny. The big penny should comfortably fit in your hand and be about the same size as the lens of the magnifying glass. To start, the penny is held at your right fingertips, the big penny is finger-palmed in the right hand. Show the penny, toss it into your left palm, show it again, pick it up with your right fingertips and, as you apparently toss it again into the left hand, switch it for the big penny. (Bobo switch) The left hand closes around it. As you talk about inflation, the right hand goes to the right pocket and picks up the magnifying glass as it ditches the small penny. Bring out the glass and, opening your left hand toward you, put the glass over the penny. Then show the "newly enlarged" penny to the audience. As you say, "Pennies were bigger in the olden days," remove the glass and drop the big penny on the table. Second thoughts: Don't put the glass into your pocket when you first show the big penny in the left hand; in fact, the right hand should freeze once the glass is removed. You don't want to draw heat to the pocket or the right hand. The size of the penny should be about 2 inches across - don't try to do this with a 5-inch penny - unless you have hands like King Kong! The magnifying glass should be about the same size as penny and cover it completely. This just looks better than having the penny bigger than the glass (besides, that wouldn't make sense). The whole thing should be treated casually; make it look as if you are not really doing any moves. (Well, you're only doing one!) There are many, many patter possibilities here - buying penny candy as a kid when you were younger; a take-off on the long-distance telephone ad on TV, about not getting much for a buck; Jane Austen's Cents and Centsibility (for the literati) - the list goes on and on. But above all, be entertaining. Remember, that's the name of the game. Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com ----------------- 14. Super Coin Melt - Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) Effect: You take a large coin and visibly change it into a million little pieces. If you do it right it almost looks like the coin melts into little pieces. Props: A larger coin for me works the best. Example: 50 cent piece, silver dollars. (Pretty well any silver coin) Also you will need silver foil(I use the well known cigarette foil)If your using normal tin foil just make small mini tin balls(the more you make the better)If you are using the cigarette foil make sure you take the paper off the one side before you make the small little balls. Set-Up: If you’re right handed, the small little tin balls are in your left hand. (Don’t call any attention to this hand.) The silver coin is in your right hand. You can use misdirection by keeping the silver coin moving in your hand while talking at the same time. Method: The method for this effect is so easy that I hope I don't fall on the floor and die of a laughing to death. You show the coin in your right hand, you go to put it in your left hand and you thumb pinch the coin with your right hand(you make it look like you put the coin in your left hand but really the silver tin balls are in your left hand.) All you have to do is blow in your left hand and open it at the same time and the little tin balls go everywhere. (When I bring my hand up to blow in it at the same time my other hand is ditching the coin in my pocket.) Note: If this is done right it almost looks like the coin melts into these little steel balls and it looks real magical. (I've been doing this coin effect for a few years and I get a pretty good reaction out of people). Patter: After showing the coin, (playing with it in your hand) you ask the spectator if they know what happens to metal when you add heat. (Of course they say when you add heat to metal it melts). You say watch what happens when I add a little heat to this coin. (Of course this is where the coin effect comes in). Like most effects that I do the spectators always say "HOW DID YOU DO THAT" and I always come back and say "QUITE WELL I THINK" O.K. enough with the terrible puns. This is a little different effect with the foil then what I usually use the foil for. (It’s almost wasting the foil but I think that this coin effect is worth using the foil once or twice. (Usually I use the foil in a real magical way, in this effect your just making small little tin balls). Give this effect a try it's not like its going to cost you anything. And there isn't any big killer moves to do it either. ----------------- 15. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 18 1959/60/61 - The Early Sixties Magic – Sex – Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll! Drugs? Well, I smoked cigarettes and I did like a drink; so who didn’t! The years just zipped by.  Sometime in 1959 I’m at a private party in Manurewa; it was the usual ‘Kiwi bash’, booze and guitars, and people doing their party ‘bits’ – some sang, others told jokes, played guitar solos, and, a young magician ‘did his thing’. Some bloke came into the lounge room, his face blacked up, so that his eyes and mouth were the most prominent features, white shirt, black bow tie, and trousers and on his hands, he wore white gloves. Carefully placed a 78 record on the old gramophone, he turned the volume way up, dropped to his knees, then suddenly - he was - AL JOLSON, singing ‘Mammy’! His timing and lip synchronisation with the record was utter perfection. You simply forgot that a record was playing. I was fascinated, what a great party piece! For me, this was just what the doctor ordered; I couldn’t, still can’t, sing or whistle in tune to save myself (although I do have perfect pitch when listening to others – can even tell when a record or tape is playing even minutely fast or slow). In the ‘60s, some of my favourites were: singer Paul Anka, the comedian Stan Freberg, and Spike Jones and the City Slickers. Utilising some of their recordings, and with the aid of my record player (I think every kid must have had one – they held 12, 45 RPM records or LP’s, and dropped them down one by one as each one was played) and a mirror, I soon had an act together. Must have got it right – the first time I ‘performed’ the mime act in public was at the 1960/61 Mt. Maunganui Sound Shell – Christmas/New Year shows, with the ‘Fabulous Howard Morrison Quartet’. Here’s part of the write-up from the local newspaper: Quote: “last night 10,000 spectators attended ‘The Mount’ sound shell outdoor concert, the numbers no doubt boosted by the appearance of the fabulous HOWARD MORRISON QUARTET. Also on the programme was the young entertainer, ORCHANTÉ– who gave an astonishing demonstration of mass hypnotism, placing 100s of the audience to sleep, As well as the 50 or so crammed onto the stage! He also showed his skill as a Magician with some adept sleight of hand tricks, and then proved himself as a singer Of No Mean Ability. This talented young man who turned 17 just three months ago, is set to take the world by storm!” Unquote. “A singer of no mean ability”? Now that particular line upset Howard and the Quartet - as well as the other singers on the show, I’m not surprised! Strange how audiences (and reporters) disregard the fact that there is no backing band/orchestra on stage when watching a mime act. Later, I invested in a reel-to-reel tape recorder – saved the embarrassment caused by the needle occasionally jumping on the record, or some ‘wit’ giving the turntable arm a ‘gentle’ nudge. Always thought that I had originated miming (to records) as a full act to the New Zealand public, but I recently discovered that it was in fact DON LINDEN. He started performing professionally around 1957/58. Apart from being a great Mime Artist, he had an astonishing’ natural gimmick. When he opened his mouth, it was like looking down the Grand Canyon; you could damn near see his feet. He truly had an ‘India Rubber gob’! A few years later another chap, STEVE STEVENSON arrived on the scene; he was the ultimate; fantastic sound system and, everything was recorded in STEREO – WOW! Incredible sound effects – cars, planes etc., ‘racing across the stage’ – what a mime act! Apparently, he had all his teeth pulled out because it enhanced his mouth movements for his miming; now that, IS dedication for you! ------------------ 16.
