Palmerston North is 140 kilometres (or two hours' drive) north of Wellington. The Speirs Centre is a new arts centre in a central location in the city with the international airport (now with direct flights from San Francisco and Melbourne and elsewhere) only a few kilometres away. The Speirs Centre is a new music and drama facility based around a 350-seat theatre, large orchestral rehearsal room and other rooms, halls and ancillary spaces for our needs. It is part of the Boys' High School where there is abundant free parking over the weekend. Across the road is the Sherwood motel and convention centre with fine bar and restaurant facilities as well as a handsomely beamed banquet room. There are many other hotels, motels, bars and restaurants within easy walking distance. There will be coffee and snack bar facilities in the Speirs Centre also. The Convention Committee is in the early stages of planning for the headliners and other magical attractions and has no details yet but we are pleased to offer a fine and very convenient venue for the next 3-day international convention. --------------- Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com ----------------- 2. IBM International President Tony Wilson’s Magical Adventures ----------------- Message from Tony Wilson - IBM International President 2004 - 2005 Our first night in Colon was spent with Robbie and Phil Willmarth in their rented cottage beside a lake. The next day Phil and I traveled to St Josephs on the edge of Lake Michigan to visit the printers of the IBM Journal, The Linking Ring. Mary went back to Shipshewana, the market she had already visited when we were staying with Hank and Jackie Moorehouse several weeks earlier. We transferred to our own accommodation that night and were pleasantly surprised to have a lovely room with a lake view only a few miles out of Colon. George and Nina Schindler were also house guests so accompanied us that evening to a party at the home of Hank and Jackie Moorehouse where we had a great time with other guests. Thank you once again Hank and Jackie. On the first day at Abbotts I was interviewed by the Battle Creek Enquirer and this was published a few days later. I was also asked to visit several businesses for two hours on the first two days of the Get together performing strolling magic for customers, staff and visitors to Colon. We also visited Bill Watson, son of Monk Watson, a well known personality from Colon who passed away several years ago. That evening we attended the first show of the get together which featured performers under the age of 22 years (including the MC). We saw some very good acts and were impressed with the standard. As we were quite tired we retired early to our Bed and Breakfast accommodation. Day 2 began for us attending a lecture by Terry Seabrook followed by performing strolling magic in Colon with Mary as my driver. In the afternoon we visited friends who have rented cottages around the lakes in Colon before attending another evening show. As I was needed for judging the stage acts on Day 3 we needed to arrive early at the Colon High School auditorium for a briefing from Hank Moorehouse.11 acts competed and were duly judged by myself and 4 others. They also operated a people’s choice competition. A visit to FAB Magic Company that day was also fitted in where I met and talked to Rick Fisher and his wife who have set up this new business and Marilyn Abbott daughter of Percy Abbott. Another social function at the home of Hank and Jackie Moorehouse proceeded the evening show on day 3.We visited the dealers after the evening show as well as the infamous Legion where many people gathered for eating, drinking and magic in a rowdy setting and carnival type atmosphere. More news next week. ----------------- 5. All Magicians Will Find This Very Useful ----------------- Message from Gordon Drayson (UK) I wondered if you would mind mentioning my new website. It is not a magic website as such, but I believe that all magicians will find it very useful. The URL is: www.BigReminder.com Basically, the aim of the site is to remind you of all the events in your life that you end up forgetting about. Sign up is free, and so are all the tools that are available on the site. This includes e-cards (with some magic orientated poster cards) plus friends reminders, which will remind other people of events you wish them to remember. To give you a brief example of how this works, you can enter your wedding anniversary, and then Big Reminder will email you 1 week, 3 days, 1 day, one the day, or a mixture of any of these to remind you it is happening. Wedding Anniversaries are important not to forget, but what about if the events you had entered were bookings, or gigs. Wouldn't it be good to be reminded of jobs that you have coming up? It will act as a back up should your normal system fail. The other example would be if you are running a convention. Add all the delegates email addresses into your "friends list" and then set a reminder for the convention, and attach your friends to this event, and then as well as you getting a reminder about the convention, you will be reminding all your delegates, all in one go, automatically, and all for free. Please take a look and sign up to test the system, it might just save you forgetting something really important in the future.. ----------------- 8. Kaymar's Morley Budden Taken Ill ----------------- Message from Mike Austin (UK) Morley Budden of Kaymar Magic was taken into hospital on the 30th July. He collapsed at home; doctors have discovered a stomach ulcer that was bleeding into his gut. While doing the appropriate tests they have also discovered a previously undiagnosed heart condition. I visited him yesterday (Friday) he is remaining cheerful although somewhat frustrated and bored by the hospital regime. Treatment is progressing slowly - the doctors having to stop the bleeding before they can start on treatment for the heart condition. Cards and messages should be sent to Kaymar’s address. ----------------- 10. Tahiti Via Xmas Island ----------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) Natalie and I are about to embark on another 3 month run which we are looking forward to. We will go from Hawaii down to Tahiti via Xmas Island and the usual places in French Polynesia. We then take the ship on a 24 day cruise to Pitcairn Island (where Mutiny on the Bounty took place) then to Easter Island (all the holiday islands are covered on this trip), via Lima, Manta (Ecuador), Panama Canal, Grand Cayman to Florida. From here the next cruise is a 28 day trip via St. Kitts, Dominica, Trinidad, Devil's Island, Fortaleza Brazil, Dakar (Senegal), Accra (Ghana), Lome (Togo), Nambia and finish in Cape Town South Africa .. quite the trip. Then take the ship through ports of South Africa down to Nosy Be (I thought it was just a name people called other people) which is in Madagascar, Pointe de Galets, Port Louis in Mauritius then EIGHT (count em) days at sea and we finally get off in Fremantle Australia to head back here to Vancouver. Wow .. what a trip. There are a lot of sea days so we will keep ourselves busy with writing (Natalie will travel write and I'll write a book on something) and playing cards. I don't think email will be easy in some of these ports but will do our best to keep in touch while we are away. I have been busy working on developing websites for other entertainers . if you get a moment you can see my work at the following (including video footage and photography on ALL sites) www.allandrew.com http://www.autioneersofdinstinction.com www.chaplinmagic.com www3.telus.net/magic.1 www3.telus.net/public/a3a63332 So as you can see I’ve been busy. I am looking at designing websites for other acts if they want them. The response from these so far has been great. Well, that’s really the news for now. Will email again when we are at sea or when we return. ----------------- 11. Peter (aka Pit Finn) www.pitfinn.com ----------------- 12. The Palace of Magic - A Spectacular Success ----------------- Message from Tony Brook One of the largest magical gatherings in decades took place at the Royal Palace of Falkland in The Kingdom of Fife, Scotland over the weekend of August 13, 14 & 15. The event began on Friday night at a formal black tie gala dinner presided over by Ali Bongo, Mark Fisken and Jay Scott Berry. The Lord Lieutenant (representative of H.M Queen Elizabeth II) and a distinguished number of other guests made up of magicians and lay people were treated to a first class after-dinner cabaret by Patrick Page, Pierre de Beaufort, David Goldrake and Mark Fisken. Also at the dinner a number of selected magicians were awarded The Circle of Palace Magicians award. This weekend mega magical event was the brainchild of President Mark Fisken some three years ago and together with the input of Co-Producer and Event Director Jay Scott Berry and Honorary Patron, Ali Bongo, it has become the largest event of its kind in the UK. It is expected that a conservative estimate of the official attendance figure for 2004 will be around 5,700. Quite apart from the aforementioned names, the impressive cast of International Headliners also included Royal Sorell, Charles Brook, Colombine, Tony Brook, Mike McMillan, The Aladinos, Moira Fletcher, Alex Proctor, Kenny Hurran and Paul Dabek. Several other major names from the world of magic, fire-eating, juggling, falconry, balloon sculpting, stilt-walking and face-painting also added their talents to make the event a huge success. Set in the Palace grounds the Entertainment was, quite literally, non-stop on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 6pm. Jay Scott Berry who has been described as the man from the Past, The Present and the Future lived up to the description - ‘ The Timeless One’ given to him by Zadok (Tony Brook). No one is still quite sure how he managed it, but he was seen to be in more than three places at one time! And that’s not all! At each of the performing venues he was seen performing a totally different act! The Saturday night Gala Show held at the Palace Theatre was Emceed by Ali Bongo and starred, Royal Sorell, David Goldrake, Patrick Page, Dr, Anthony Darkstone (Tony Brook), Kramus Nexifus (Mark Fisken) Paul Dabek and Jay Scott Berry. Thunderous applause and standing ovations were the result. The Gallery of Wonders was Emceed by Zadok (Tony Brook) and featured Patrick Page, David Goldrake and Jay Scott Berry. Outstanding technical support was provided by Lyall Coull. Some of the featured performers at the Palace Theatre were Charles Brook, David Goldrake, Royal Sorell, Moira Fletcher, Paul Dabek and Jay Scott Berry who were all masterly Emceed by Ali Bongo. Another major star attraction was The Wizard’s Chamber ably Presided over by none other than the 2501 year old Kramus Nexifius. A special vote of thanks must go to the National Trust for Scotland for their sponsorship of the event. Many thanks also to a whole host of ‘backroom’ folk whose hard work and dedication contributed to the success of the event. Special mention must be given to Lisa, Judith, Andrew and Gillian. Of the many superlatives used to describe the event none can do it total justice nor convey the vast amount of planning, organizing and the very real hard work that made it a spectacular success. It can be best summed up in the beaming smile and spontaneous words of a little girl, “ I think you all are just so amazing”. Magic "Pop Cap" Give Away - Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) Effect: The magician calls over some children and asks if they would like to see a magic trick. In doing so the magician then goes in his pocket and takes out a pop cap. (White plastic kind) He tells the children that this pop cap is very magical. The magician goes on to tell the children that when he was about their age a magician told him about this magical pop cap and after he saw the magic he was able to keep it. The magician takes the pop cap and puts it flat in his empty hand, then the magician states that you must have faith in yourself and that you are a special person to get this to work. At this point the magician then picks a child to help him (I pick the littlest child to help me) the magician tells the child now for this to work you must have faith in yourself. Now are you ready to do some magic. The magician covers the pop cap with his other hand and gets the child to blow on his hands. When the magician opens his hand the pop cap has turned solid gold. The magician then gives the pop cap to the child and tells him that he must take good care of the pop cap or the magic will wear off. (In saying this so the foil will not wear off) The child leaves with a permasmile and that your job is done. Props: You will need two plastic pop caps (I use the white ones) and some gold foil. You can find these caps everywhere there should be no problem finding these by the hundreds if you wanted to. This is a great close up effect for when you are doing a show for children and you happen to see a special needs child. This effect is also a nice ice breaker when you are out on the town. Set Up: O.K. first you have to get the gold foil on the pop cap. You must take you time on putting the foil on. It is very hard to get the foil on rounded corners you must go slow and take your time rubbing the foil on Rub softly and slow and you will find in time that it (the foil) will take to it. Note: This is a great effect and the cost is nothing. I guess the question is: Is it worth to put a little work in to something to make a little child smile? Also you don't have to use the gold you can use the silver foil as well. You don't even need the foil just use normal paint and just paint the pop caps if you really want to the do the effect you can use anything. I'm just giving a few ideas’ that’s all. I'm not saying it has to be done like this. Do it your way or whatever works for you. Real Time: Here's what we are doing, tell the story above or make up a story that works for your style magic. Pick any child you want. I usually pick the smallest child or if there is a special needs child around I will use them for this effect but really any child will do. In the switching of the pop caps I myself use a thumb pinch but you can use any method that works for you, example would be a pocket wand, a magic coin, a silk, paper money or you could already have the gold cap it your one hand the entire time and just make it look like you put the normal one in that hand or whatever works for you. Special Note: When the cap goes from normal to gold try to look surprised and use a little bit of acting when doing this the children are always watching you and they will notice if you make any facial expressions and this will help this effect 100%. This is a must try trick and remember to make it your own when you do that the trick is easier to do. Trust me I like to keep it simple. I don't like the really hard tricks to do. The small and easy one's work just as well. What ever you use gold foil or silver foil take your time you don't want the foil to rip. You give a child a give away especially with magic you make your magic 100% stronger and better. The gold foil is very hard to find so take care when using it. ----------------- 14. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 103 ‘Another ‘Blast From The Past’ During the late Sixties, a Maori singer known as - ‘Prince’ Tui Teka, appeared on the scene, and became a sort of National ‘Superstar Icon’ in New Zealand. Many people thought that he was a real ‘Maori Prince’; it was in reality, only a fanciful title he’d given himself. Not only was Tui a singer but he also played various musical instruments as well, notably the trumpet. He had a big voice with a big personality to match - in fact he was a big man in every sense the word; I don't know what he weighed, but it must have been in excess of 20 stone (127/128 kilos), reminiscent of another Maori singer from the Sixties, the late Rama White - she was a wonderful woman with a great sense of humour, who was often advertised as a -‘ TON OF FUN’! Tui used to drive around in a - ‘Chevy Impala Station Wagon’ and, where most people would have ‘Go-Faster’ stripes/decals, Tui had wood panelling that had been beautifully decorated with artistic Maori carvings; rather ostentatious but it did help to create the impression that he was a - ‘Real Prince’ (Showbiz’ Bullshit!)! It was quite a sight to see him get into the car - you could actually see the vehicle lean over, the springs groaning as they took his magnitudinous weight! How he drove it I'll never know, most of the steering wheel disappeared within the folds of his gargantuan stomach! The last time we saw Tui Teka was at the ‘Castle Hill RSL Club’ (which was one of our regular club bookings), in Sydney Australia, I ’m guessing but probably around 1980/81. He was performing as a guest artist with another New Zealand Icon - who just happens to be a very close friend of ours, the famous, EDDIE LOW - ‘THE VOICE IN A MILLION’! There were two episodes from that wonderful night that have been ‘burnt into my memory banks’ forever! The first was when Eddie and Tui - each standing on opposite sides of the stage, played, on their trumpets, a stirring rendition of Nini Rosso’s ‘IL SILENZIO’, which brought the house down to thunderous applause! The other episode was when Eddie sang a song that he had written himself titled - ‘Songs From Home’ which had every New Zealander in the place howling their eyes out, myself included, for the second time. The first was when Eddie, with his guitar, popped around to our home in Sydney one afternoon and sang it for us - wanting to know what we thought of it. The tears running down my cheeks told him all that he needed to know. He headed off to a studio and commercially recorded it! I really am a ‘Softie’ at heart! Incidentally, the Secretary manager of the Castle Hill RSL Club in Sydney was a chap called Bruce Cameron, who used to manage the Tainui Motor Hotel in Whakatane, which is where my wife Veronica was brought up and, where we lived prior to leaving for ‘Aussie’. It’s a small world! I cannot vouch for the authenticity of this but - ‘WHERE THERE’S SMOKE, THERE'S FIRE’! ‘Prince’ Tui, whilst on tour somewhere, in the ‘Chevy’, which was packed with hungry members of his band etc. pulled into a drive-in ‘McDonald's’- up to that little mesh covered grill that you talk into. Winding the window down Tui says -“ I'll have Five Big Macs, Three chickens - Five large chips and -Three large Cokes!” “ Will that be all sir?” queried the tinny voice that issued from the speaker - that probably belonged to some snotty, pimply-faced fifteen year-old. Turning around Tui says, “AND WHAT DO YOU FELLA’S WANT!” ‘Prince’ Tui Teka died in 1985, at the age of - 48! Nuff said! Tui Teka is buried at Tokomaru Bay, which is on the East coast - around 80 odd km N.E. of Gisborne, h/way 35, where the ruins of a frozen - meat plant and port installations are witness to better times. A Maori meeting- house, built in 1934, with some beautiful Maori carvings on display, is also there. Veronica, who remembers the ‘massive’ Tui from those early days, said that if you wanted to take a photograph of Tui’s grave, you would need - ‘Wide Angled Lens’! She can be so SICK at times! It’s not entirely her fault. Hanging around me damn near 24 hours a day for the best part of 32Years, and being bombarded with my wicked sense of humour, I guess something had to rub off! ------------------ 15.
