Editors Message ------------------- Message from Alan Watson - The Magic One Is your act killing you!!! De Larno, a.k.a. Burns Scandrett Christchurch is recovering at home from lung surgery. Some months ago, a chest X-ray showed that there was something suspicious on the lower third of his right lung. After further scans, a biopsy proved that there was a small tumour which had to be removed. Fortunately, the operation was to be performed by David Shaw, one of New Zealand's top thoracic (chest) surgeons. During the interview prior to the operation, David Shaw, recognizing whom his patient was, many questions were asked, . . "How did David Copperfield vanish that aeroplane? How did David Blaine . . etc." Then he said that there was one thing that he always wanted to learn, and that was spreading a pack of cards into a perfect fan. The reply, "No trouble, I'll teach you . . . after the operation." Sure enough David was later presented with an unopened pack of Bicycle cards and taught how to fan cards. The operation was performed successfully on 18 June at the Christchurch Public Hospital and De Larno was allowed to return home. He boasts that for many years he cut women in half (various methods) and now it was payback time, he was cut in half. The scar covers from his right breast to the middle of his back, 180 degrees round. Apart from some discomfort and tenderness, recovery is swift. Being a non-smoker and the fact that no-one in his family ever smoked, how did this happen? A very strong possibility might have been caused from talcum powder from inside modelling balloons. De Larno, like most magicians, made balloon animals, inflating by mouth. Some years ago, a young balloonologist who performed at the South City Mall, Christchurch died from lung cancer supposedly caused by also inflating by mouth. Although the specialists in the thoracic ward agree that it is a strong possibility, there is nothing to substantiate this theory. De Larno will continue making balloon animals, but from now on, inflating by pump, not by mouth. Something we all should think about! Drop Burns a line as I know that he would love to here from you: delarno@xtra.co.nz Does any one else have any information on the talcum powder theory? ------------------------------- The latest update on Tom Orchard’s progress Tom was taken to hospital Sunday night by ambulance, with severe chest pains. He has a lung infection, but seems to be responding to the antibiotics, and is quite cheerful and chatty. He had a CT scan yesterday (query pulmonary embolism), but no signs of any clots, so that's good. He will be seeing the 'chest' consultant today or tomorrow, so we should know more then. There is still the question of why the heart is more enlarged than before, and the ecg shows a different trace than last time, so it is still a waiting game. ---------------- Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com ----------------- 2. Tony Wilson’s Magical Adventures ----------------- Message from Tony Wilson - IBM International President 2004 - 2005 We drove down to Cleveland from Troy, Michigan without incident and checked into the convention hotel. We had a nice suite on the tenth floor and were pleased to actually unpack for a six night stay. It was good to meet old friends and make new ones which are what magic conventions are all about besides the shows, dealers and other activities. I was busy attending Board meetings and related activities but still managed to catch most of the scheduled events some with, and some without Mary. We were both preoccupied with speeches we had to make at the banquet on the last night. I was sworn in as President and was impressed with the support shown for me at the banquet and in other venues as the first President from the southern hemisphere. I will do the best I can to make this opportunity significant internationally. On the last gala show I introduced myself to the audience in Maori with a mini, performed the NZ crazy compass and produced a large NZ flag. Now I have the gold chains of office to add to our traveling luggage! Still four check ins and two cabin bags. The next two days were spent with Hank and Jackie Moorehouse in White Pigeon, Michigan and 12 magicians from Hungary, Hong Kong, England, Japan, Montana and Pennsylvania. We visited the Abbotts Magic Company, graves of famous magicians in the Colon cemetery, an amazing Flea market at Shipshewana and had wonderful meals together thanks to the generosity of Jackie and Hank Moorehouse. Thank you both for an amazing time! We are now heading for the Society of American Magicians convention in St Louis and look forward to another six day Convention where we will be guests of the SAM and will be able to relax and enjoy all the activities. ----------------- 5. Lance Burton Feature In USA Weekend - Boom Summer ----------------- Message from Wayne Bernath (US) Lance Burton Does Record Summer Business In `Master Magician' Show It's only half-way through the summer and "Lance Burton: Master Magician" has surpassed any other summer performing at the Monte Carlo Resort & Casino. First there was the eighth anniversary on June 21st the first day of summer and now over half-way through his 13-year contract there is still nearly five years left to see the man who is widely considered the "World's Best Magician." Next USA Weekend Magazine did a feature story on Lance Burton. The cover of the world's largest English language magazine with over 49 million readers said, "MAGICIAN LANCE BURTON: AN AMERICAN SUCCESS STORY." The inside headline gave a synopsis of THIS MAGIC MAN SOARS with a sub headline of Boyish Lance Burton is the top illusionist in a town that showcases the world's best. It all started at a potato chip factory. The lead paragraph read "When he first came to Vegas in 1982, magician Lance Burton - - who includes doves, geese and a parakeet named Elvis in his show - poked good-natured fun at Siegfried & Roy's royal white tiger act featuring "Butterball, the Royal White Turkey" onstage." "After all, when he was 12, growing up in a working-class section of Louisville, Burton watched Siegfried and Roy on the old Merv Griffin Show and was inspired to pursue a career in magic." "Before Siegfried & Roy, you had magicians doing 10-minute spots in Vegas," Burton says. "In the wake of the mauling that sidelined Siegfried and Roy last year, audiences are finding out what the world of magic has known for years; Burton, 44, is the pre-eminent Las Vegas entertainer of his kind. What's On magazine has recognized him as such for the past five years, placing him ahead of the flamboyant German duo and David Copperfield. By the time his 13-year contract with the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino runs out in June 2009, Burton is expected to have made $110 million. (he's surpassed that in May in gross ticket sales) "The illusionist who has donated millions to charities is a natural with youngsters." "At age 20, he won the gold medal for excellence from the International Brotherhood of Magicians in 1980, the first year the medal was awarded. Within a week of arriving in LA, he appeared on `The Tonight Show.' " "His reputation soared and demand for Burton eventually landed him his current 13-year contract in Las Vegas. He maintains his conservative values -- no drinking, drugging or gambling." "When he first hit it big, rebuilt his parents a lavish home on his grandfather's farm in Russell Springs, KY." Lance Burton will do a benefit show for the Zelzah Shrine Temple in The Lance Burton Theatre at 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1. Tickets are only $25. Call 382-5554 for information. 100 percent of the proceeds go to The Shriners. Comic-juggler Michael Goudeau is his long-running special guest star who entertains in the middle of the show instead of an intermission. For information on "Lance Burton: Master Magician" call (702) 730-7160 or (877) 386-8224 at the Monte Carlo. Show times are 7 p.m. Tuesday thru Saturday and 10 nightly on Tuesday and Saturday. The theatre seats 1,274 and doors open one hour prior to show time. A bar is located in the theatre lobby. Check out Lance Burton's web site at www.lanceburton.com. The price includes a full-color souvenir program with each ticket. ----------------- 6. 2004 Magic Convention - South Africa ----------------- Message from Giepie Fourie (South Africa) I want to tell you that we in South Africa are hosting a convention during the 5th of August till the 9th August 2004 in Bloemfontein. Opening time: on Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday between 14.00-19.00. Metro 1,St Pall station. Musee Magie 11 ru St Pall 75004 Paris, France tel 01 42 72 13 26 ----------------- 8. Tony Wilson’s Installation Banquet ----------------- Message from Peter Marucci (Canada) New incoming International Brotherhood of Magicians' president Tony Wilson was installed in the prestigious office on Saturday night, July 3; New Zealander Tony was, of course, accompanied by magic's lovely first lady, Mary. Tony accepted the gavel from outgoing president David Sandy at a banquet at the annual convention of the I.B.M. in Cleveland, Ohio. About 400 of the magicians at the convention attended the dinner, which was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Renaissance Hotel, prior to the gala closing show at the elegant Palace Theatre, just a few blocks from the hotel. Tony and Mary are on an extended tour of North America as part of his tenure as I.B.M. president. They will be in Canada where Territorial Vice-President Joan Caesar will host a barbecue for them on July 18. About six or seven performers from all across the province of Ontario -- including your truly -- will be demonstrating their magical skill. ----------------- 9. Magic Exposed On Big Brother (Reality Show) ----------------- Message from Duck Cameron (Aust) Unnecessary Sharing..... Just a quick note mentioning how disappointed I was to see an episode of Big Brother this last week in Australia repeated over and over again featuring the remaining 7 members of the Big Brother household performing magic tricks for each other (and viewers) as one of their tasks within the household. Every housemate had to learn a trick, with instructions supplied, and then perform to the rest of the group. What we, the audience got to see, was a bunch of lay people, playing with, performing badly, and exposing various tricks while practicing. The clunker for me was watching one of the housemates walking around with a zombie ball attached to stick in one hand, and the cloth in the other. My question is this....all the props supplied must have come from somewhere. Either a magic shop or a magician. Having myself worked behind the camera in television, I know when purchasing props of any type for a show I would always let the supplier know what they were intended for, to avail. either a discount, or at best, good advice and service. Obviously, in this case, it was more important for the supplier of these effects to make some cash, or be able to say on their Bio. that they supplied a high rating T.V. show, than actually protecting their art. Shame... ----------------- 10. Cruising Here In Vancouver Canada ----------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) Just had a great month off from cruising here in Vancouver Canada and took the time to visit some local magicians and finish my first CDROM of magic to sell on cruise ships. Natalie and I are off again for a season heading from Hawaii down to Tahiti over to South America then South Africa then down to Australia before heading back here to Vancouver to tour with Murray Hatfield (my solo act on this one). Before we leave I will be appearing as a guest at the PCAM 2004 held in Seattle from August 4-7th so hope to catch up with any Magic New Zealand readers there. ----------------- 11. The Magic University ----------------- Message from Robert Allen (US) The Magic University (MU) is what we are calling our first offering of interactive workshops that will take place on 9/15/04 the day after LVMI. The workshop instructors will be Michael Close, Chad Long, Kostya Kimlat, Aldo Colombini , Roger Klause, Daryl, Dean Dill, Steve Draun, Gazzo and Paul Cummins. A workshop differs from a lecture by having a much smaller number of participants, in the material being taught, and the fact that most of it is done with the props in your hands so you gain valuable experience in the techniques and effects being taught. The material being offered by our instructors will be different than what they teach in their lectures. Each of our instructors has a different speciality and these are reflected in the material they have selected for their workshops. Ropes, cards, coins, sleight of hand, are just some of the subjects that will be explored in great detail by our qualified instructors. The MU workshops will have a maximum of 18 people and a minimum of 12. They will run between 2.5 and 3 hours in length and the topics covered would be at the discretion of the lecturers. Workshops will be offered at 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM and 1:30 - 3:30 PM. If demand is high, we will add additional workshops at 4:00 - 7:00 PM and 7:30 -10:30 PM. The MU workshops will take place in a classroom style facility located in the San Remo Hotel in Las Vegas, NV. Fees for the workshops are $50 per workshop and you may sign up for more than one workshop. List of Workshops: Aldo Colombini - (Magic with Rope) Aldo has chosen the topic of Rope Magic for his workshop. Rope magic is a fascinating subject and there are routines for close-up, parlour and stage that you will learn in this workshop. Aldo will tie it all together with his wonderful wit and you will leave with a complete act done with rope. Please bring a 7 foot length of rope, a ring and a pair of scissors and get ready to learn some very visual and direct rope magic from an acknowledged master. Michael Close - (Making it Real - Constructing Routines that Defy Explanation) The average magician knows enough routines and sleights to last a lifetime. What is lacking is the knowledge of how to construct routines that leave spectators without a clue, saying to themselves, “But he didn't do anything!” In this workshop Mr. Close will discuss his own repertoire, explaining the mind set that produces seamless, natural looking magic. He will also analyze and offer suggestions for routines that are in the repertoires of the attendees. This is your chance to learn the real secrets of great magic. Steve Draun - (Cards) Various shifts and application riffle shuffle culling and stacking and application. At one time Steve Draun was known as the "Underground Man", regularly fooling the top card men that traveled through Chicago. Today, Steve performs in the "real world" of professional magic. He has had extensive experience performing for both the Wyndham and Hilton hotel chains as well as many hundreds of performances at corporate functions. Draun Workshop Topics: · The "Stevens Shuffle" and application · Casino style blind riffle shuffle · Casino style blind running cuts · Various advanced palming techniques and application Paul Cummins - (Cards) An instructional workshop session presenting up to a dozen hard hitting card magic routines that require little or no sleight-of-hand! This workshop includes a complimentary manuscript containing descriptions of all twelve routines. (The manuscript is available only through attendance at this Workshop) Paul's ACME Card Magic Workshop is a "hands on" working session - NOT a lecture! He will perform two or three near self working routines (the routines do not require any sleight-of-hand, beyond the ability to hold a pinkie break) and then explain them, as a lecturer would. Then the participants (that’s you!) pair up into two person teams and actually practice the routines on one another as Paul walks around and helps everyone learn. This cycle is repeated until time runs out. Roger Klause - (Close-up, Parlor) Roger will show you first hand how to raise the level of your performances and add more impact to your magic. You will see in minute detail a diverse range of superb magic using cards, coins, bills, cigarettes, sponge balls and silks. Thumb Tip Finesse: Bill Switch Miser's Cornucopia Billusion Sleeve Sponge (Close-Up Version Improved) Smokeless Cards: Counting On It (with Klause Addition) Victor Eleven Card Trick (with Klause False count) Merlin's Lost Aces (with Overhand Bottom Deal) Thompson's Ace Production (with Klause Shuffle) Elmsley's Minor Triumph (with Skinner/Klause Control) Card Sleights: Diagonal Palm Shift Finesse Jog Shuffle (Unpublished) In Lieu of the Double Undercut Klause Block Crimp Control (unpublished) Coins: Sun & Moon The Overt Switch No Shuttle Shuttle Count Von Klause (Shortchange with bills) Satan's Bill Switch Fake Coin Flip Daryl - ("Original Routines and Handlings" ) For the last 30 years, Daryl's lectures have always been great, but his "Hands On" workshops are even better! Each and every student will learn by actually PERFORMING the effects in the workshop. Every small step is taught in detail and the performing of the material in the workshop is completely different from that which is explained in his lectures. It's a much more personalized experience and the "Hands On" method of learning is the best there is. Daryl will be teaching every intricate detail of his beautiful Fingertips Coins Across routine 3FlyIII, an EXCELLENT and totally impromptu version of Out of this World -which is probably the most effective card trick ever invented, several variations of one of the most beautiful sleights in card magic. First, he'll teach what he has planned (the tricks above), then he'll go around the room and give EVERYONE the opportunity to ask and learn about whatever they wish to know! This question and answer period lasts until the end of the workshop and some of the very best learning take place during this time. Daryl has numerous students from all over the world who pay $250.00 an hour for private lessons (and even at this price they receive an excellent value). This is your opportunity to receive the next best thing for a mere fraction of the price. Sign up today, we guarantee that you will be much more than satisfied! To maximize your value from this workshop, PLEASE be sure to bring a close up mat, a deck of cards and four well worn silver dollar size coins -the dollar slot machine tokens will be fine. Gazzo - (Cups & Balls) Gazzo has made his living primarily as a street performer. He has worked all over the world and attracts some of the largest crowds of any street performer on the scene today. And, what trick does he use to close his show? "The Cups and Balls" Gazzo’s technique and routine has been honed by tens of thousands of performances and he will teach it all to you during this exciting workshop. The props, technique, lines, misdirection, audience management and more will be covered in depth. For best results bring your favorite cups and balls and get ready to learn the real secrets of this classic effect. Kostya Kimlat - (Cards) Another workshop on card magic?!? That's Right . . . on Powerful, Commercial Card Magic. Working deck-in-hand at hundreds of parties, trade shows, and corporate events, Kostya has developed audience centered card magic that fits the worker's standards. Kostya says: "I perform this material regularly and will share all the work in the workshop, from the psychology and structuring of the effect, to the subtleties and techniques that are used. We will go over routining to see how a simple deck of cards can be used to entertain for hours at a time, without anyone quipping: "You got anything else besides card tricks?" (You know what I’m talking about!) More importantly, raising our card magic to another level requires both technique and theatre. Together, we'll see how the focus of magic can be shifted from your hands to the spectator's experience, producing theatre rather than puzzles." The workshop will also feature a rare opportunity to learn the Roadrunner Cull. Not released anywhere on video, this versatile technique will transform the way you do card magic. Finding and seamlessly stealing selections out of the deck, stacking sets of cards, getting ready for complicated effects in seconds, right before the spectator's eyes without them raising an eyebrow of suspicion - these are the technical secrets that turn card tricks into Card MAGIC! Kostya has also spent the last four years developing and performing what many consider the most direct and stunning Triumph possible. Not only will he work with everyone individually on this handling of Triumph to ensure that you are culling like a smooth pro, but he will also share handling tips and other (deceptively simpler) Triumph effects that he has yet to release anywhere else. For those willing to put in the work, you will be unbelievably awarded by thunderous applause from your audiences. Bring your nested boxes, hippity-hop square circles, and sponge... no, wait... just bring a deck of cards and get ready to create card magic! Dean Dill - (Coins) Dean Dill is one of the most well known and highly regarded names in the inner circle of magic. His unparalleled style of sleight of hand coupled with his ability to create jaw dropping routines has earned him the attention and respect of world renowned magicians such as David Copperfield, Johnny Carson, Dai Vernon, and Larry Jennings. His creations include, Bizzard, Dean’s Box and his Explosion Coin routine have captivated audiences and magicians worldwide. Although magicians from far and wide enjoy being baffled by Dean's perfectly honed craft, he's by no means a "magician's magician" who knows a thousand tricks but cannot relate to a single audience member. Dean's performance persona and his off-stage (or off close-up pad) persona are one and the same. When the audience watches Dean they get the feeling that he's a warm and down to earth guy that just happens to be able to alter space and time as we know it. Dean’s Workshop will focus on magic with coins with most of the emphasis on the Matrix routine. Dean has developed and mastered many wonderful version of this coin classic and he has lost of secrets up his sleeves that he will be sharing with the workshop participants. Please bring a close-up mat, some coins and a shell if you have one and get ready to spend an afternoon with the Master of the Matrix. IBM Cleveland, Ohio Was A Great Week Of Magic ----------------- Message from Bob Durante Cleveland, Ohio just finished a great week of magic and fun hosting the IBM convention. The high point of the week was the suprise guest of the last nites performance. A fellow from the Ukaine ( I believe his name was GUP) delighted all of us with a bubble magic show that was fantastic as well as a juggling show finale with his partner from Germany, Sabrina. These two performers were the best act of the week in my opinion and also with most of the people I spoke with afterwards. We sat with the lay audience upper balcony and it was there gasps and standing ovations (three separate times during their act) that lets you know when you are seeing real magic. The rest of the shows were also captivating but if you can get a chance to see these two performers do so. Sabrina, also did a great rope twirling act that proceeded their juggling show. Most Dangerous Card Trick In The World - Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) Effect: The magician spreads the cards to show the person that the cards are in no set order. The spectator takes a card looks at it and puts back in the deck. The magician then puts the cards back in the box. The magician asks the spectator what was your card the spectator tells the magician the card is the five of Clubs. The magician pulls out a cap gun (toy gun) and shoots the deck of cards. The magician than takes the deck of cards out and spreads them, there is one card with holes in it, when the card is turned it is the five of Clubs. Props: A cap gun, a deck of cards and a duplicate card that you are going to force. The duplicate card needs holes in it to show it looks like bullets went threw the card. You also need a pair of safety glasses. Deck Set-Up: The cards have to be set-up in a special manner. Your card with the bullet holes in it has to be the second card from the top. The matching one is second from the bottom. Method: You can fan the cards without showing either the bullet card or the real card. You have to lose the bottom card. I do this just by dropping the card on the ground. When I pick up the card I place it on the top of the deck. You can do this in any way that you see fit. Just as long as your lets say five of Clubs is on the very bottom. The card that we are going to force is on the bottom. The duplicate card is now third from the top. We Hindu shuffle the deck until the spectator tell me to stop, show them the forced card and put the deck back together. Now the chosen card with the holes in it is now in the middle of the deck. Put the cards back into the deck and place the deck on the table standing up. Ask the spectator what his card was. You walk over and put your safety glasses on, make sure that your gun has ammo in it, point it at the deck and not the spectator’s ears. Next you shoot the deck five or six times. Open the deck back up and spread the cards across the table face down. The card with the bullet holes will stand out. You take this card and show your spectator and ask him if this was his card. TIP: Before the trick your force card on the bottom of the deck put a piece of double stick tape on the middle of the card. Sense the face of this card doesn’t touch any card until after you show them it when you place the cards back together. The tape on the face of the will stick to the other card so now you can spread the deck face up and they will only see the one with the holes in it. ----------------- 16. Esther Follies Show on 6th street, Austin, Texas ----------------- Message from Walter Zaney Blaney Dear friends in magic, and out of magic: Last night I attended the Esther Follies Show on 6th street in Austin, Texas. Magician Ray Anderson appears a number of times throughout the show, doing about six major illusions and some great smaller magic as well. He steals the show and is one of the "headliners". Actually it's a well knit cast of many talented performers. If you have a chance, get some friends together and drive down to see the show. It's been running 17 years, gets rave reviews, is a truly popular show, and is sold out every night. It is a bawdy, burlesque variety show, not a Sunday School event. It is loud, boisterous, extremely fast paced, a cast of about 16 people. There is lots of music, song parodies, impersonators of many celebrities, topical and political humor. It is well written, well composed, well produced. It is real "showbiz". It would be just as popular in Las Vegas, but no one wants to leave Austin. Now hear this...I don't ever recall seeing and hearing an audience more excited, more demonstrative, or more delighted to what they witness. Their constant laughter, cheering and applause was deafening throughout the hour and forty five minute show. Last night there was a large block of school teachers they let their hair down and were almost hysterical at the funny bits all through the show. If your appetite has been "whetted", make plans to see Esther's Follies. Cost is $18 adults, $16 for seniors. They play Thursday, Friday and Saturday (an early and a late show on Friday and Saturday.) You can learn more by calling their box-office at 512-320-0553 in Austin, or see their website: www.esthersfollies.com If you like a truly fun show...bawdy humor, old fashioned burlesque that has been modernized, with a lot of magic, juggling, singing, and dancing, you will have to see this show. ------------------ 16.
