Editor's Message ------------------------------------- Message from Alan Watson - The Magic One Gene McCarthy has very generously sponsored two junior magicians (Raoul Solom & Jared Fell) to the Paul Daniels MasterClass and show. Thank you again Gene for supporting New Zealand magic. -------------------------------- Registrations in Auckland New Zealand for the Paul Daniels MasterClass and show on 1st February 2004 have been flooding in. This will be a SELL OUT event soon and seats are NOW very limited. If you are not registered I would suggest that you contact Stan Goudge NOW otherwise you could miss out! -------------------------------- Had a ring from Tommy Orchard, the Amazing Orchante, who writes the regular column to say his emphysema is pretty bad and will contribute again next week which will be our 200th edition of Magic New Zealand. -------------------------------- Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com ---------------------------------- 2. Resignations From The Magic Circle Accepted - "The Secrets of Magic" ---------------------------------- Message from Richard Stupple Chairman - The Magic Circle Council INDOCILIS PRIVATA LOQUI The motto of The Magic Circle is a reflection of one of the most fundamental rules of our society - we do not disclose our secrets. It is therefore not surprising that, when BBC1 broadcast “The Secrets of Magic” on August 2nd, The Magic Circle Council received dozens of complaints from members. In line with our disciplinary procedures, the members involved were duly asked to make representation to the Council to explain their involvement. Having considered those representations, the following course of action was agreed by a majority vote of The Council. Resignations from Andrew O’Connor, Anthony Owen and Michael Vine were accepted. A request for Etienne Pradier to resign will be actioned with immediate effect. Andy Nyman, having detailed his involvement and assured The Council that he would not be part of any future programmes of this nature, will be suspended from membership for a period of six months with immediate effect. Richard Pinner also provided an explanation of his limited involvement and gave a similar assurance regarding future programmes. His explanation was accepted by the Council and no further action will be taken. The Magic Circle Council wishes it to be known that this sad episode in our history is now closed and no further discussion on this matter will take place. Magic Circle Disciplinary Statement I would like to make it quite clear that the Michael Vine referred to in our statement is not to be confused with Michael Vine M.M.C. of Elstree, Herts, who is a member in good standing, a solicitor by profession and recently stood for election to The Magic Circle Council. My apologies to Michael for any confusion that may have been caused. Richard Stupple Chairman - The Magic Circle Council ---------------------------------- 3. They Betrayed The Oath ---------------------------------- Message from Michael Finney (US) I am very emotional about this subject of exposure. If it were not for magic my life may have very well ended many years ago. Take that for face value. Should we ever, NO when we meet I shall elaborate at your request? But for now My life is MAGICAL. I feel sorry for anyone who tells or exposes the secrets of magic. For any reason! I would like to make one more point to you as a professional magician and entertainer. These people did not hurt my business or my career. Siegfreid and Roy Lance Burton and many other that you know would probably say the same thing, If I be so bold to think that they have the same thought as myself. These people hurt my Feelings. They betrayed the oath. And most of all they hurt people they will never be able to say I am sorry to. The boy or man the girl or women who saved money for a long time to buy one of the effects to perform at the local fund raiser or park outing or birthday party. Not the mainstream performer, but the small town local guy trying for a piece of what so many take for granted. The joy of entertaining people. Shame on the exposers of magic. Karma never forgets the spirits of magic are unhappy. Exposers of magic beware. There is a greater power than they can imagine looking to get even. ---------------------------------- 4. What Makes A Letter Effective? ---------------------------------- Message from Chris Roth In a recent issue, magician Bob Bohm provided useful information about a Houdini-related exposure controversy. Here (see below) is a copy of an electronic letter I sent to a USA-based convention-and- visitors bureau. My intent is to share with younger readers what makes a letter (exposure - related or not) effective. Note that the letter has the following attributes: * concise * one topic only * no exclamation marks * no questions posed * specific action is requested * low-key * authoritative * acronym or abbreviation is fully spelled out and then repeated in parentheses (this is a standard practice at wire services) * communicates some inside knowledge * no more than one or two uncommon words * indicate if writer is male or female * beginning of letter describes the problem * include name of recipient in the central message * limited use of the word "I" * limited use of adjectives * no use of the word "very" * no repetition These (see above) are essential ingredients for a well-written memo, letter-to-the-editor, or letter to an elected official. (In the letter reproduced below, I did not say that I will boycott the area. That valid option can be used by others.) Copyright MMIII by Chris Roth. All rights reserved (begin copy of electronic letter) From: Chris Roth (address deleted) To: Lynn Peters Fox Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau Date: 14 September 2003 Dear Ms. Peters: Your organization plans to provide key funding to a Houdini-related exhibit. That nascent exhibit will openly expose a valuable trade secret used by magicians worldwide. This is a formal request to reconsider your decision. As a close-up magician, I can report that public exposures make performances more difficult. Exposures tend to increase the probability that spectators will talk during a performance. It is difficult enough to perform in the 21st century given the diffusion of cellular telephones and pagers. Add to that hecklers and people with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) and perhaps you will understand the unique situation professional magicians are faced with. Public exposures tend to cheapen the experience that spectators pay for and expect. Typically, the exposure omits the complexity and level of difficulty involved in creating the illusion. And exposure is akin to a person standing in front of a cinema with a sign displaying the words THE BUTLER DID IT. One glance at such a sign and two hours of mystery and romance are taken away from the person who is waiting in line. (That unsophisticated tactic was used in 1992 by one person who did not like "Basic Instinct," a mystery directed by Paul Verhoeven.) Thank you for your time, Ms. Peters. Sincerely, Mr. Chris Roth ---------------------------------- 5. Michael Grandinetti’s Hands Filmed In National Commercial ---------------------------------- Message from Tom Lecorchick Magical Hands! Illusionist Michael Grandinetti’s Hands Filmed In A National Commercial For The United States Treasury Los Angeles, CA – September 9, 2003 – Illusionist Michael Grandinetti’s magical hands were recently filmed (August 29th) on location in Los Angeles, CA to be used in the close-up segments of a national commercial for the United States Treasury. The commercials, which will be used to promote the release of the brand new twenty-dollar bill, were produced by Incubator Productions in Hollywood and are scheduled to begin airing this fall. In the commercial, while buying some new CD’s, the customer (actor Derek Dooley) receives one of the new twenty dollar bills from the store clerk (actor Danny Wooten). Suddenly, the customer brings the bill to life, manipulating it in his hands, and causing it to fly throughout the air, attracting the attention and interest of the nearby patrons. For the project, because of his proficiency and experience in sleight of hand, Michael was selected to manipulate and display the new bills in his hands, as well as consult on a scene where the floating bill lands in an opened wallet at the music store counter. “As a magician, being a part of this commercial was a very interesting opportunity,” Michael said. “It gave me a chance to use my training in magic and illusion to contribute to a very different kind of project. It was a fun new direction.” Becoming interested in magic at the early age of five, Michael recently performed his original illusions on the 2003 Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon. ---------------------------------- 7. Recent Death Stan Hull ---------------------------------- Message from Graham Bennett (NZ) Secretary BAM I wish to record the recent passing of Stan Hull also known as our 'Lad from Lancashire'. His son Brian who resides in Brisbane rang me on Wednesday to convey the message. Details are not known except that he is survived by his wife Eleanor, son Brian and a daughter currently living in Poulton Le Fyde. Stan lived in the village of Poulton Le Fyde and during the last few years traveled by bicycle to work close-up magic at Blackpool. Both Stan and I corresponded by letter and Xmas card every year to keep in touch. On a number of occasions both Stan and Eleanor traveled to Australia during the summer months Feb/March to visit Brian and his family and then traveled onto New Zealand returning to Manchester on Singapore Airlines. He was planning another visit in Feb 2004 which he confirmed would probably be his last. His early life in New Zealand we hope to cover at a later stage. I will write to his wife Eleanor and the family. On behalf of the Magicians fraternity we express our condolences. ---------------------------------- 12. Congratulation To The Council Of The Magic Circle ---------------------------------- Message from Ken Klosterman (US) Past President Of The International Brotherhood Of Magicians Member Of The Inner Magic Circle MIMC Richard Stupple Chairman - The Magic Circle Council Richard, Please pass my congratulation to the Council of The Magic Circle for taking this action. It is my belief that magic should be kept a secret among members of good standing. It was not too long ago when you felt it was an honor to be shown a trick buy another member. I am glad to see The Magic circle taking action on the flaunting of magical items by reprimanding these offenders. My hat is off to all who attempt to discourage exposures. As I see membership drop in most organization I hope it is not too late to change our ways and follow the example of The Magic Circle. ---------------------------------- 13. The Houdini Historical Center ---------------------------------- Message from Kent Cummins Lynn Peters... I am a charter member of The Houdini Historical Center, and I believe my dues are coming up for renewal next month. I have heard that you are considering funding an exhibit that would expose Houdini's famous Metamorphosis illusion. I object strenuously! This illusion entertains and enthralls thousands of magic show audiences, as it is still being used by hundreds of professional magicians today...including such famous magicians as David Copperfield, as well as many local magicians in communities around the world. Why in the world would you want to spoil the magic for these audiences? Yes, I am a professional magician, and yes, I have performed Houdini's famous Metamorphosis...although it is not currently part of my professional repertoire. (I became interested in magic over fifty years ago, did my first "big show" in 1952, and became a full-time professional in 1986 at the age of 43. I still make my living as a magician.) My wife and I, along with my brother and his family, enjoyed a vacation to the Wisconsin Dells several years ago, and have been encouraging our other family and friends to take a similar vacation. I made a point of visiting Appleton, and enjoyed the Houdini Museum. My wife took pictures of me downtown. But I WILL NOT VISIT OR RECOMMEND THIS TO MY FRIENDS if the museum decides to humiliate the reputation of the world's most famous magician by exposing his secrets! Furthermore, I would have to immediately stop supporting the Houdini Historical Center financially, and I will of course recommend that my friends also stop supporting it. Why would the more than 13,000 members of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, or the thousands of members of the other magical societies, ever visit a small town in Wisconsin? It is to honor the memory of the most famous magician who ever lived. I understand that there is an alternate exhibit proposed, involving Houdini's strait jacket, which would be a more appropriate way to honor the fame that Houdini has brought by claiming Appleton as his home town. Sincerely, Kent Cummins www.MagicHotline.com Austin, Texas Life Member, Society of American Magicians (Houdini was president for many years) Order of Merlin Excaliber International Brotherhood of Magicians Associate of the Inner Magic Circle with Silver Star London Order of Willard Past President, Texas Association of Magicians ---------------------------------- 14. Reply To Bill Spooner – Re 200 Wands In The Collection ---------------------------------- Message from Jon Zealando (NZ) I created a Flash wand for an opera I was in many years ago with what was then known as magic flash cubes and prior to FISM flash... The flash showing through a see through mirror type glass tinting material which looked like a chrome tip on wand, that were more common here than the white tip ones. I showed Dick Zimmerman at that time when he visited a New Zealand convention dates I can give you. It progressed on to become a very fat wand with a built in electronic flash that could be repeatedly used. The dimensions made it only suitable for my children's shows. Eventually with smaller electronic flash units as now used in disposable cameras I got it down to a more acceptable size which I took to John Calverts Cavalcade in Cincinnati and gave to some magicians who offered me hospitality. Sold a few and took orders and then advertised in Linking Ring, which drew a hostile response from a magi called Lovetree claiming he had patented the idea etc. which was ridiculous as my original was being used by me publicly ten years previous to his patent. Hank Lee marketed some of mine but was put off by his bleating. I was personally hand making them as a craft at the end of my kitchen table. I have come up with a number of improvements like a tap to flash feature and an even thinner version under finger ring size and short enough to use in close up. My latest extra is an electronic spark and crack which is very exciting as it can alternate with the flash and can happen when touching spectators hand or props etc I have shown George Schindler and hope to start making them again when I get time.. a small number of my wands are now owned by a number of famous magi ...Do you have a fax set up I can send you more info.. as yet I don't have a scanner but will go to some effort to send you more info if you are interested. I have a web sight www.jonzealado.co.nz for further info about me. All the best with your book. P.S. my wand also carries the sliding tip which allows for several effects production, penetrations and shrinking illusion. It is constructed of polycarbonate or Exxon plastic which makes it virtually unbreakable with no protruding switches to get broken. I offered a year’s guarantee so it’s a real pro prop that I'm sure will become a collectors item. ---------------------------------- 15. Regarding Item #20 (David Blaine) in issue 198 ---------------------------------- Message from Ron London (US) There is some feeling among scholars that the ancient Hebrew translates to "40 days." (And there are several references in the Scriptures about Biblical events which took place in "40 days" (an "actual" counting of days.) Yet some believe that "40 days" actually just means "a long time." So if you accept this translation the 44 days (in David Blaine's case) is a moot point. ---------------------------------- 17. New Magician May Be Coming To The Aladdin ---------------------------------- Message from David Neubauer (US) Wyrick Aladdin gig no illusion, sources say Abracadabra! A new magician may be coming to the Aladdin. Late Thursday afternoon the hotel announced that the last performance of the lighthearted variety show "Society of Seven" at the Center Stage Showroom would be Sept. 28. Two sources who spoke to VegasBeat Thursday night insisted that illusionist Steve Wyrick -- who left his Sahara showroom last month --  has already signed a deal to "four-wall" the space until at least February, when new owners are expected to take over the bankrupt property. A "four-wall" arrangement means Wyrick would rent the room from the hotel or work for no money up front. His compensation would come from ticket sales and, possibly, drink and merchandise sales. "It is a small space for a show like Wyrick's, but he wants to stay on the Strip -- prestige, you know -- and he'll pare down his act to accommodate the room," a Strip entertainer who is friendly with Wyrick said. His act has recently included eight dancers and an illusion where a helicopter or a twin-engine plane appears on stage. The Center Stage is basically a converted ballroom with a small stage and little storage or dressing area. Wyrick could not be reached for comment this morning. Aladdin spokeswoman Tyri Squyres said there was "nothing official to announce yet." After several years performing in Branson, Mo., and elsewhere, Wyrick opened at the Lady Luck casino in 1997, and then opened his multimillion-dollar production show at the Sahara in March 2000. The naughty "X" show plays in the Center Stage's late-night slot, and no changes are expected with its performance schedule. The Passing of Pat Andrew ---------------------------------- Message from Jon Zealando (NZ) Not Quite A Broken Wand. It is with much sadness I record the passing of Pat Druce Andrew not a magician as we define them. but someone many will know of especially those of us that have followed the kindred art of ventriloquism. A very unique character who among many other loves and talents created I would estimate over a hundred individual ventriloquist figures for both local and overseas purchase. His last project was to compile an encyclopedia of Ventriloquists and their dolls, for which he had asked me to write a forward. Here are some thoughts I had put to paper of my admiration of his creativity and personality. Pat was amazing person to know , in the last 40 years or so he constantly surprised me with his knowledge on many subjects. It was nothing for him to take on such a project at the age of seventy six, and he has gone at it with such clear minded goals, creative verve and energy, that I fear he will finish it before I finish this forward. [sadly this has not come to pass but I believe his close friend, author and publisher Mark Alexander in England, had promised to help complete ]. I have read, listened, seen, witnessed Pats often self taught skills as writer, printer, newspaper cartoonist. ( Te Maori Turehu) Film and video buff collector poet song writer Puppet and vent doll maker extraordiare. He was a truly prolific artist whose works are full of the true kiwi pioneer spirit. The do it your self number eight wire traditional all rounder, that wouldn't slow down not even for chronic emphysema. He chose not to drive a car and for many years kept Phone conversations to "When are you coming to see us,I've got heaps to show you." and what a delight it was to do just that visiting and listening. He hated wasting time while he had a project on his mind. He almost always did it his way first and learn from any mistakes he made. He embraced the computer, digital, technology. never stopped learning. Thank you Pat for the free Puppets you gave to me. The big cartoons on my office wall and writing. I was the fastest ventriloquist you had ever seen back in the seventies. Your great stories lifted me to laughter like no other. Pats funeral at Dills, Schapper rock Rd, Glenfield. Monday 22nd Sept 2pm. He is survived by his wife, Vera, Shoal Point rest home..Northcote, Auckland N. Z. P.S. I still carry Pats unique hand written and illustrated book ".How to make you own, your very own ventriloquist doll." that I've used in my lecture on vent at conventions. ------------------------------------ 24.
