Disturbing News On P. 22 Of July Magic Magazine ---------------------------------- Message from Dr John (US) Greetings. Just two quick comments on Houdini exposures. First, I think Bob Bohm's solution is brilliant. My only addition would be to increase the safety factor, the room (walls and floor) can be padded. This would coincide with the "mentally insane'' explanation of the straight jacket's origin. Might prevent some contusions and bloody noses! Second somewhat disturbing news appears on p. 22 of July Magic Magazine. Apparently our own well respected Jim Steinmeyer has a book for release to the public which reveals the workings of Houdini's vanishing elephant, based on Charles Morritt's ideas. The texts describes: "readers will learn the secrets and life stories behind optical marvels such as floating ghosts...., disembodied heads, and vanishing ladies" as well. I understand Pepper's ghosts and similar principles have appeared in the public domain, and it appears the main theme of the book is a history of the magicians involved, their lives, personalities, etc., however it still sounds like unnecessary exposure. Aren't these principles still in use today by current illusionists? I seem to recall Lance Burton using a Morrit like vanish of a horse (or mule?) on television. I'm looking forward to more information on this, perhaps a discussion by Mr. Steinmeyer himself. As stated earlier he has earned magicians' utmost respect and has helped bring Grand Illusion into the 21st century. I'm remaining optimistic that he will not do the wrong thing here. Sincerely, Dr John Tampa, FL, USA ---------------------------------- 7. FISM 2003 Schedule ---------------------------------- Message from Wim Bos - Sec. The last few years we have tried some new ideas (some made up ourselves, some seen at other conventions) during the Dutch Magic Conventions. Some of them were received so well that we decided to insert them in the FISM program. Souvenir Photos of FISM 2003 Off course every participant would like to have a souvenir photo of the FISM 2003 convention. You need some proof to show that you have really been there! How about a picture of you floating in mid air, made by Anne White! Have a look in the dealer’s room! The mystery room: You never know what might happen when you enter this room. There is only one way to find out. Experience it yourself! Get in there and feel the magic. Many people, many ideas: In the Netherlands we sort of found out that magical moments do not always happen on stage. Most magical moments happen when two people with the same passion are talking about it. When a group of people discusses magic (our passion!), the most magnificent things happen. New ideas, new insights can change the way you look at conjuring. Therefore we started discussion groups. One discussion-leader (who is an expert in a certain area, like table magic, magic for children, drama, PR, theatre techniques and far more) and about 10 participants can discuss the subject for about 25 minutes. Then the participants can find themselves a new subject. For FISM we changed the format a little bit. We present you mini-conventions with a theme: - The Philosopher's Stone with George Parker. Tuesday 10.00, Friday 09.30 (Maris Hall) and Saturday 10.00 George Parker's 'The Philosopher's Stone' is a clinic to turn your magic into Gold. Learn George Parker's effective system to transform simple tricks into powerful magic that will be remembered. - Impromptu Magic with Adam Fields Wednesday 10.00 Create in small groups of 3 - 6 magicians an act in 30 minutes and win 100 EURO! Adam Fields will shake you up. As clown, improviser and one of Holland's top stand-up comedians he will guide you in creating a new act in 30 minutes with only the materials we offer. GET FRESH IDEAS! - Magic for children with Quentin Reynolds Thursday and Friday 10.00 "Discover two techniques that will double the audience response you currently get from your children's show. Quentin will also reveal the secrets to creating memorable magical moments that will have children talking about you for months." 'A unique opportunity for the children's performer to meet other magicians, to exchange experiences and opinions. And get the better of it! Meet your fellow children magicians! Learn their best-kept secrets and golden tips! Exchange experiences and get inspired! - Magic, medicine and humour: The linking rings with Dr. Jaishen Rajah Friday 14.00 Magic for the sick and infirm, especially children. Lecture by, interactive magic and discussion. Is the meaning of magic different in the context of the sick child? Should the sick child be approached differently to the healthy child? What magic is most appropriate for these kids? How does magic serve as a diagnostic aide to the physician and what is its role in rehabilitation? - Freestyle & Extreme Magic with Maarten & Otto Friday night 24.00 Tired of watching magicians by now? Don't worry, no four-ace-tricks here. Just have a beer, have a laugh and enjoy the ladies. Shocking or challenging? Outrageous or hilarious? Is it a great new style or should it be banned (like almost happened in the yet quite open-minded Dutch magic scene…)? A discussion forum will be held after the show. Giving you the opportunity to say what you think about this. IT 'S NEW. IT'S ROCK 'N ROLL. IT'S CRAZY. Please take care before you enter. This might be shocking! MagicSports How can you develop your creativity in an art form with as many rules as magic? Break them! Remember the old saying: "If an accountant makes a mistake, he calls it a "computer error". If a plumber makes a mistake, he charges you more. If a doctor makes a mistake, he buries it. But if a magician makes a mistake, he's a bad magician." Does it really have to be so? Many great new effects have been created when magicians have made mistakes and dealt with them on the spot. Improvising. One way actors learn to improvise is a series of games called 'TheatreSports'. So in 1991 Tim Ellis developed a series of games for magicians called, you guessed it, MagicSports. Many of the games are based on real life situations that put the participants under pressure and push their creativity to new limits. Games include: 'Drunk Tech', 'Make-A-Trick', 'Instant Tradeshow', and 'Balloonatics'. MagicSports. You'll be surprised how much they love it! For more information about how to play MagicSports, and a complete list of games, go to www.MagicUnlimited.com and www.TheFlickingFingers.com The Wittus Witt collection Naturally FISM has not started yet. But there is one attraction which has opened already and which will be free to FISM participants: A great exhibition of wonderful magic sets! They are on display at the Museum which is located behind the convention building. Just 2 Minutes to walk! For a first impression you can turn to www.wittuswitt.de/Museum.html ---------------------------------- 8. Ken Stoker Died On Thursday June 26th ---------------------------------- Message from Craig Stoker (US) It is with sadness that we write you to inform you of Ken's passing on Thursday June 26th. For those of you that had not heard, he was sicker then we thought. When he went in for his gall bladder operation, they took a biopsy of suspicious stuff on his liver and it turned out to be cancer. It was not primary liver cancer and he was under going testing for what type of cancer it was. On Thursday, he was listless and unresponsive throughout the morning. About 1:30 a nurse was checking on him when he went into cardiac arrest. They were unable to revive him. We will be having a memorial service to celebrate Ken's life on Saturday July 5th at 2pm. The service will be in Palmdale at Halley-Olsen-Murphy Memorial Chapel. The chapel is located at 3150 East Palmdale Blvd. Map attached: http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&ed=EeP_A.p_0TrV1yjl1SNhx7O ZkaStq9gpKRniebl.tU9viUTfElsFNoUikeo3uU7xmIfHNzGoIFfogmEp84gWi3LG2H_ M&csz=Palmdale,+CA+935505006&country=us&cs=9&name=&desc=&poititle=&p oi=&uz=93550&ds=n&BFKey=&BFCat=&BFClient=&mag=6&newmag=7 The phone number for the chapel is (661) 947-4155 We will also have a reception at the house afterwards: 1729 Date Palm Dr. in Palmdale. I plan to "retire" from broadcasting soon and perform "full time." ---------------------------------- 10. 83 years - Performing 100 Shows A Year ---------------------------------- Message from Capt. Bill James I have been receiving your Ezine for quite awhile and find it to be most interesting. I am 84 years of age this year and still do about 100 shows a year. I do many Charity jobs for Nursing Homes, Hospitals and Seniors residences. I am enclosing an item that Gene Gordon wrote about me some years ago. In the next issue I’ll tell you about our Club in Hamilton, Ontario, known as the Hamilton-Burlington Magic Society. My Background in Magic. During World War II (1939-1945) while in England I met one of the Davenports who had a Magic Store in London (1943) and became very interested in Magic. Very little was done until I returned to Hamilton in October 1945. In the Spring of 1946, I was married and spent part of my honeymoon in Shenandoah, Iowa where I had lived at one time. An Uncle of mine gave me $50 with the following remarks “Buy your new wife something”. To make a long story short, I bought $50 worth of Magic from Gene Gordon’s Magic Shop in Buffalo, N.Y. She’s never been really excited about magic or Magicians since that day. She is firmly convinced that we are all a little on the weird side. I had joined the army as a private in Sept. 1939 and came home as a captain in October 1945, so I used the Stage name of Captain Bill James. I did my first paid job $5 in the summer of 1946 for the Canadian Legion (a veteran’s club) in Hamilton. I was dressed in a new suit of tails, had a couple of cigarette droppers (battery operated to light my cigarettes) and I practiced for at least 6 months in front of the bathroom mirror. I felt I was all set for the big time. I thought I was pretty good. I was getting to the point I couldn’t even catch myself making the steals. On the night of my first show, I found my audience was made up of old Guys, veterans from the 1914 - 18 war, and probably one or two before that. The Pianist was slightly inebriated and all he could play was “Liebestraum” so on I went making my cigarette productions accompanied by a drunken piano player and a half - stoned audience yelling “bring on the girls”. Gosh these guys didn’t know great talent when they saw it(I thought). I was only doing two tricks, my fantastic Cigarette production and my very short Billiard ball routine. I paid particular notice that they applauded and laughed when I dropped the Shell and stepped on it. ruining a future in Billiard Ball manipulation. Within 2 weeks I had sold my suit of tails and auctioned off my electric droppers. In telling my experience to Gene Gordon he said” Bill we live in a pretty rat- race society. He said I think you’re a humorist so I’d suggest you work on a comedy presentation. Happy to say I started working full time in magic at age 55 and some 29 years later I’m still performing and my audience is still laughing. Capt. Bill James E-mail : captbill@interlynx.net ---------------------------------- 11.
