HELP WANTED Re: FISM - Jason Byrne - jasonbyrne@aol.com ------------------------------------- Message from Jason Burns (US) I've run into a situation and thought perhaps you might be willing to help. Let me explain the scenario. Last summer I registered to attend the FISM convention in Holland for this coming July. Since I was going to be performing at the Lido in Paris for 9 months I had arranged in advance to have that week off. Five days before leaving for France I was notified by the USDA that a nation wide quarantine went into effect and that my birds had to remain at home. In short, my contract was canceled. At that time I didn't want to cancel my registration and hotel because maybe by some slim chance I still might be able to go. A week ago I received confirmation for an engagement in Atlantic City for the summer months. In turn, I definitely won't be able to attend FISM after all. I wrote the FISM secretary a few days ago regarding my registration. His reply is as follows: "Dear Jason, Very sorry to hear that you can't attend FISM 2003. We removed your name from the list of contestants. According to the registration conditions up to March 31-2003 we would have reimbursed 25%, after that date no reimbursement is possible. Kindest regards, Wim Bos secr. FISM 2003" --------------------------- His mention of removing me from the list of contestants is puzzling since I registered only as an attendant and not a competitor. Fortunately, the hotel that I was going to be staying at replied quickly with the good news of reimbursing me 75%. Their letter is as follows: "Dear Jason, Thank you for your email. We have canceled your hotel room. We will reimburse your credit card. Refund 75% (see cancellation conditions) We trust to have informed you sufficiently. Kind regards, Suzanne Lippold Suzanne Lippold ATP Congresses & Meetings ATP Online, The Advanced Travel Partner Koninginnegracht 14-f, 2514 AA The Hague, The Netherlands P.O. Box 11632 2502 AP The Hague, The Netherlands" ------------------------------- I'm a little disappointed to say the least that the hotel is willing to help compensate my lost and not the convention, especially considering the fact that the loss of my contract at the Lido has cost me greatly and ultimately was a result of the government. It is my understanding that FISM is currently sold out and that the registration fee has even increased in value since my purchase. What I'd like to do first is try and find someone interested in going to FISM and sell my registration to them. I'm not quite sure if I can even do that but before I write back to the FISM organization I'd like to get my ducks in a row so to speak. My question is, would you be willing to mention in your next Magic New Zealand e-zine of my situation and that I'm seeking someone interested in purchasing my registration. Hopefully, once I have someone lined up I would like to then write the FISM secretary and his superior to see if there is anything we can work out. ---------------------------------- 4. Adelaide Topic: MENTALISM ON RADIO and the promotion of IBM GARDEN CITY RING 148 Inc: Adelaide. Adelaide's IBM Garden City Ring will be promoting their club and looking for new members keen to join the magic scene on radio, this Monday 12th May 2003. If you are able to tune into SA's Fresh FM on 92.7fm you will hear Michael Krantis promoting the IBM Club and also performing mindreading experiments on air. Due to schedule at 10am.In a short time we will keep in contact, as Michael Krantis will be appearing on a regular basis once a week in the evenings with his own Mentalism segment. Recently Michael was interviewed on the breakfast program with Amanda Blair on SAFM 107.1fm. It was due to the phenomena surrounding John Edwards. Michael performed a clairvoyant routine involving a prediction and a caller from the public. He has also had success two years ago after appearing 3 times on ABC Radio with Phillip Satchell. Michael wowed his audience with Spoon Bending, Diary Predictions, Book Tests and Handwriting Analysis on air. Michael recently has been receiving high acclaim performing for corporate groups and appearing at major launches and dinners for numerous agents. Many members have had the pleasure of seeing him perform some dynamite Second Sight Routines and his work on the Stage is both sharp, witty, scary and fools the heck out of any magician watching. We wish him the best of luck! At the ripe age of 24, this guy is going places. ---------------------------------- 6. Review Of The Flicking Fingers Weekend ---------------------------------- Message from Mathew Unwin A quick review of the Flicking Fingers weekend that was held here in Melbourne, at Dracula's theatre restaurant. There are some things you just don't expect in this world. The last of which would be having seven German magicians astound and inspire you while at the same time making you laugh so you have to cover your ears and close your eyes, just to get a breath in. But it happened - again and again - over two of the most entertaining and informative days I have experienced in my Magic life to date. The Flicking fingers are arguably the finest troupe of magicians to ever grace our shores, and a great bunch of guys, besides. They were unbelievably open with their skills and knowledge, and were up to answering challenging questions from the most experienced amongst us, while still making the new-comers feel comfortable asking about fundamentals. I overheard a group of professional magicians chuckling to themselves at the end of only the first day over the 'value for money' that those who didn't partake in the weekend missed out on - and I agreed, wholeheartedly. The Flicking Fingers Lecture itself was of a standard and form that you would just not believe unless you saw it. The creativity involved in both the effects themselves and their revelations is a must to see for anyone who feels they have seen all that there is to see in magic. Do yourself a favour and pick up their DVD (cleverly titled 'the movie') or their book (titled - you guessed it - 'the book') it is worth every cent. Better yet, get to see them, any way you can. ---------------------------------- 10. Magic Castle - Over One Thousand Performances ---------------------------------- Message from Terry Seabrooke Pleased to say I have made good recovery from hospital and so on and resumed the Norman Wisdom tour with packed houses. The following week will be MC for the opening show at the S.A.M. big Convention in Las Vegas with the usual terrific S.A.M. line up of acts. I know I shall see some of you there. Do come up and buy me a drink!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. ---------------------------------- 11. Michael Grandinetti Meets President Bill Clinton! ---------------------------------- Message from Michael Grandinetti Los Angeles, CA – May 6, 2003 – Illusionist Michael Grandinetti got the surprise of his life this past week in Hollywood while visiting a producer at CBS Television City, the network's major Los Angeles production facility. As he was heading to his appointment, Michael came face to face with former President of the United States Bill Clinton, who was at the studio doing a live remote for a television appearance. “I had the opportunity to say hello and shake his hand. He has such an enormous presence and was very welcoming to everyone around him. I’ve met many celebrities over the years, but the effect he had on the people was amazing. It was an honor meeting him.” Michael Grandinetti, 25, has been featured on CBS, ABC Family, FOX, TNN and on radio stations across the country. In 1999, his magic was introduced to the world when he challenged “The Tower of Flaming Spikes” on the NBC special The World’s Most Dangerous Magic II. Michael’s other television appearances include Fox & Friends, New York Today, Crook & Chase, and Entertainment Tonight. He also recently designed an illusion used by famed illusionist Silvan on his television series in Italy. ---------------------------------- 12. The Amazing ‘Orchante’ Saga - Vol. Two - The Australian Years Magic New Zealand ---------------------------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page - 5 Of Booking Agents, Variety Artistes and Other Things One would have to say that the Variety Artists in Sydney were spoilt by choice considering the vast number of venues they could work in, and the scores of agents who booked the acts into them. The ‘Encore-Showcast Variety Directory of 1978 lists 97 Agents and 369 Registered Clubs in and around Sydney alone, and that’s just the Registered ones. I know that at least ten years earlier, there was a hell of a lot more clubs than that! Of the 97 Agents, 63 booked ‘Sight’ Acts. All these Agents had several types of acts under ‘Management and Exclusive Representation’ in their stable; many of the Top Agencies also had exclusive booking rights to International ‘NAMES’, who came into Australia quite regularly for a season. Our Agent Brian Fogarty represented 14 acts (including ourselves) that ranged from Vocal and Instrumental Duos, Trios and Groups, Male and Female singers, Comedians, Instrumental Specialists and Hawaiian Instrumental/Dancers/Vocalists. He also had the sole booking rights for Winifred Atwell -‘Queen Of The Keyboard’ (until her death many years ago), and Buddy Loren, an American Impressionist/Comedian/Vocalist. We were the only ‘Sight Act’, on Brian’s books. Each agent had exclusive booking rights with several clubs, and the only way an agent could get his acts booked into another agents clubs was to strike up a deal, where they would trade acts to work in the others venues. It was great system because it kept all the entertainers in solid work. Where it did fall down was when different agents didn’t like each other; no matter how great a certain act was, if they were being managed by a ‘detested’ agency, Tough - they didn’t get booked, and that meant a loss of potential income to the particular artist, in fact, all of the artists on the ‘detested one’s’ books! I know that we lost work because of this petty jealousy between various agents - all artists did. The only solution to the problem was to drop your agency and their management, and go Independent. It was a big gamble because unless you had a ‘Name’, you would go down hill, big time, fast! You just had to be well known by all agents, even those who had never booked you previously, mainly for the reason I stated above. Going ‘DIRECT’ obviously meant that you took over all the responsibilities that your agency had done for you, looking after your book, chasing jobs, negotiating fees etc. You learnt to live with a telephone that seemed to be permanently attached to your ear but Hey, if you wanted to eat…? It became a lot easier when some ‘Bright Spark’ came up with the brilliant idea of a central booking centre. With one phone call an agent, anybody, could find out if a particular act or acts - any type of artist, was available on particular dates. For a yearly fee, any artist could register with: ‘THE ARTISTES ANSWERING CENTRE’ (AAC). All you had to do was keep the Centre informed of all your bookings, times, availabilities etc. There was no favouritism; they could, of course, offer advice to a potential booker of the suitability of acts to particular venues, which was to your benefit. There is nothing worse than working for the ‘Wrong Audience’, NOT because your show was - ‘what’s a four letter word for - CRAP’? It just wasn’t right for that particular venue or audience. I haven’t got a clue right now who ran the AAC, not without taking a dive into the bottomless, murky depths of my ‘famed’ aluminium trunk, searching for the answers that are floating somewhere within it’s swirling mists of times past. Yes, yes, I know it’s non-poetic - unromantic… (Another four letter word?) But, I like it! What I do know is that the Principals of the AAC, took the time to view every act that registered with them, so that they knew what they were talking about when describing and advising bookers in regards to a particular artist(s). They also advised the acts of any feedback they received, good or bad, which again was to your benefit - any problems that you weren’t aware of; you could rectify, and improve your performance. Agents loved the AAC because in the past, if they had rung you for a booking, and you weren’t available, they had to telephone the next on their list ad infinitum, until they got someone. Now one phone call did the job, and their telephone bills were dramatically reduced, as were the artists. - CONTINUES - ------------------------------------- 20.
