You need to attend Paul Daniels Master class! Take a look at: www.pdmasterclass.com Take A Look At These Comments Just In From The Sydney Masterclass (8 February 2003): "The man's a genius. His information was extremely well organised and concise. He allowed ample time for questions and consistently gave detailed answers with you in mind. It was worth every penny and I felt truly honoured by his presence." Michael Stavrou "I haven't stopped thinking since the lecture and I have already worked out an avenue for afternoon radio and some breakfast live TV." John Barrand "Paul did a great job. I found it inspiring...with new ideas which I can easily implement." Alan Watson "I really enjoyed my day with Paul, the lecture was superb and I gained an immense amount of knowledge to act upon. I enjoyed the company of Paul & Debbie and found them both to be very professional and friendly." Allan Cullen "Saturday was fabulous. To my mind it was one of the best business presentations I've been to, and one of the most important magic lectures I've ever been to." Graham Kite "Paul covered the subject with such vigour that everyone was kept interested throughout. Such is the power of the man that this time just flew, nobody fell asleep or got bored and there were lots of enthusiastic note takers. He did not digress as much as I had expected, the jokes and stories he did include were great. He did not talk overly about himself which I think was appreciated." Sean Taylor If you no longer wish to receive information about the Masterclass, please send an email to info@pdmasterclass.com with 'remove' in the subject line. ---------------------------------- 3. I.B.M. To Host Film Screening At Convention ------------------------------------- Message from Message from Mindy Burden (US) A new film recently debuted to high accolades at the Los Angeles Film and Video Festival. The 60-minute 'Saturdays at Reubens' will be screened at the upcoming I.B.M. Convention in Kansas City. We believe it is a gem you won't want to miss! This film is a unique magic documentary as it does not follow the stars and legends of magic, but instead takes the audience into the REAL magic community. The documentary follows the lives of several magicians who have met for decades every Saturday in the back room of Reuben's Deli in Manhattan, New York. 'Saturdays at Reubens' is filmed from the perspective of a layman looking into the world of magic. It shows how magic is passed down from older generation to newer generation and the respect given to those who came before us. It presents magicians learning magic, practicing, and booking shows without exposing any magic secrets. This film is sure to hit home with every person at the convention. The film's producer will be on hand to introduce the film and sign autographs. --------------------------------- 4. Demonstrating Close-Up Linking Rings? ---------------------------------- Message from Glen Rhodes (Aust) - GRhodes@monadel.com.au A few years ago an Asian fellow was in Australia at a southern magic convention. I'll see you on my lecture tour in August 2003, when I will visit 8 cities down under with my NEW lecture, CRASH COURSE ON KIDSHOWS. ---------------------------------- 7. Rough Riding At Sea ---------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) The crossing over the Tasman Sea on the Regal Princess was one of the roughest I've ever experienced at sea. Guess who drew the short straw to perform that night!! It was so rough they had to cancel several other shows and activities on the ship. The show lounge is at the front of the ship and so while performing I was watching my equipment bounce up and down, not to mention my stomach. Fortunately all turned out well and people who weren't in their cabins turned up .... just one of the joys of cruising. Something to consider when putting together an act for cruising is have props that won't fall over in bad seas. ---------------------------------- 8. The Worlds Greatest Hypnotist"? ---------------------------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) In last weeks e -Zine there was a publicity blurb regarding a Charity event for the raising of funds for the Starlight Children's Foundation, to be held on Saturday 10th May 2003; to be staged at the Telarah Bowling Club in Maitland. It also stated that the evening 'International Stars of Magic show' is: "Proud to present Martin St James, The Worlds Greatest Hypnotist"? Ask any New Zealander, or Australian (and many Americans for that matter), and they will tell you that 'FRANQUIN', was the greatest, and most successful hypnotist the world has ever seen! Most of his box office records (for a one man show) have not been broken to this day! End of Story! ---------------------------------- 9. Best wishes to all. :: BREAKING NEWS :: Past student and College of Magic lecturer, Khonzani Lembeni, has been selected by the famed UniverSoul Circus to perform in their new 2003 season of "Soul in the City" in the United States of America. Khonzani left for Atlanta this evening to begin rehearsals. The UniverSoul Circus has for the past 10 years brought world-class entertainment to metropolitan areas across the globe. "At UniverSoul Circus, you feel like you're front row center, regardless of where you sit," said President and Founder Cedric Walker. "Not only are we intimate in our one ring big top, we're in your face. It's the light show, pyrotechnics, the music, and the action. It's all right there, right in front of you. You can reach out and touch it!" Parade Magazine raved: "It rocks, it amazes, it teaches kids positive values - and it's packing them in. The tent almost rocked from the swaying, dancing and clapping of the audience. At UniverSoul Circus, everybody gets down." Khonzani's selection is a milestone in the College's "Magic in the Community" project and will offer exciting opportunities for other South African entertainers to perform on the world stage. Acts for the 2003 season hail from the far reaches of the globe, including China, Colombia, Russia, Mongolia, Brazil, Australia, Ecuador, Gabon, the United States and of course South Africa. Sell An Illusion - Mirrortrate ---------------------------------- Message from CJ Lerman (US) - rubberchicken@cfl.rr.com My friend Chris Campbell is an illusionist. He's trying to sell an illusion, mirrortrate. He says that it's like new, only used once. The effect is, you take a mirror and show it solid. Then you pass a person thru the mirror! It could be examined at any time. Great for stage or parlour. He bought it for $1,250 plus $250 shipping. He's selling it for $550 and free shipping and handling! If your interested contact me and we'll work things out. ---------------------------------- 17. Over The Rainbow - Peter Marucci ---------------------------------- Message from Peter Marucci (Canada) St. Patrick's Day is noted for the "wearin' o' the green," leprechauns, shamrocks, and a host of other things Irish. So how do you turn all that to a magic theme? Well, that's what I'm here for; so, read on: OVER THE RAINBOW Effect: The magician, in a real Irish accent (or atrocious fake one), talks about the coming of St. Patrick's Day and the legend of the leprechaun. Seems the wee folk are given to playing tricks on mere mortals, especially when they are captured and asked about their secret pots of gold. To escape human clutches, the leprechaun will say that the gold is hidden at the end of the rainbow and, while the mortal goes on that wild goose chase, the leprechaun makes good his escape. To demonstrate, the magi shows a rainbow-colored silk, which he stuffs into his left hand. With an empty right hand, he reaches into his pocket and takes out an Irish 50-pence piece -- a "lepre-coin," he explains. He rubs the left hand with the coin, opens the hand, and reveals -- a pot of gold! Working: You'll need a nine-inch rainbow silk; that can be made by taking a white silk and coloring it in stripes with various colored Sharpie markers. (Don't worry if the stripes "bleed;" it's supposed to be a rainbow.) You'll also need a gold pot. Readers of my Showtime column in the Linking Ring magazine will recall, from the Three Little Pigs routine of some years back, that these can be found at craft shops that specialize in miniatures for doll houses. It's a tiny brass chamber pot, in fact. The 50-pence Irish coin can be found at most coin shops in the "junk" box. It has a picture of a harp on one side and is about the size of an American half-dollar. And -- for the gaffus that does the dirty -- you'll need a thumb tip. The silk and coin are in the right jacket pocket; the pot and tip in the left pocket. As you tell the story, both hands go into the pockets, the left palming the tip and pot and the right grabbing the silk by one corner. Bring the right hand out of the pocket a fraction of a second before the left, putting on the heat on the ungimmicked silk and the otherwise empty hand. Show the silk on both sides, stuff it into the left hand (actually the thumb tip) stealing the tip as the right hand completes its job. Gesture with the right hand (to show it as empty, without actually mentioning that fact) and reach into the right pocket (ditching the tip) and bring out the coin. Do your finest mumbo-jumbo with the coin, explaining that this time the leprechaun wasn't so smart because you got to the end of the rainbow -- and found the pot of gold! Second Thoughts: This is just one of many, many similar routines I use with a silk and a thumb tip, some of which have been printed here. The thumb tip is the one piece of magic equipment that I never go anywhere without; in fact, I usually carry two. If you don't want to make up the rainbow silk, a nine-inch green silk will do, to represent the leprechaun. Or you could sketch a picture of a leprechaun on a white silk, in green ink. (See illustration) And, if you can't find the gold pot, a gold coin will do almost as well. In fact, you could even use a gold-covered chocolate coin and then give it to the spectator. Finally, the Irish coin isn't really necessary. it's just a gag I like (the lepre-coin) and -- for the ultra-cautious -- it give a logical excuse for going to the pocket to ditch the thumb tip. Besides, it's a lot better than bringing out some "invisible woofle dust" (which, no doubt, comes from dusty, invisible woofles). Erin Go Bragh! Interview With Tony Brook - USA ---------------------------------- Tony Brook got the magic bug at age 5 when his father showed him a card effect. It was the beginning of a passion that has endured to date, which is some 50 years. Currently, he performs as 'The Magical Mind of Tony Brook ' or as Anthony Darkstone. Having Native American connections he also performs as a shaman called Tony Two Eagles. He has covered all the areas of magic from close-up to illusions. In the last 15 years he has become well known internationally for his special brand of magic that he refers to as ' Magic of the Mind'. He is also well known for his lateral thinking, has created several interesting effects and was invited to contribute to Paul Hallas' book 'Mindful Mentalism II'. His current manuscript is entitled "The Direction of Mis-Direction". He was honored, as seen above, to be on the front cover of the January 2001 issue of M-U-M, a leading International magic publication, which is published by the Society of American Magicians. This is a rare honor that is given to certain World Class magicians including David Copperfield. He has been featured more than once in Dan Garrett's prestigious column entitled ' World Class Magic'. He is a Member of many International magic organizations and is on the Panel of Magic Advisors and The Director of International Operations for The Magic Web Channel in the USA. He is also the President of Assembly 272 of The Society of American Magicians. He is a highly experienced magician and his advice is eagerly sought as a Magical Advisor. He moved to Portugal in 1987 and has become well known as a Producer and Director of Magic Shows, several as fund-raisers for charitable institutions. He is also a Marketing Strategist & Communication Specialist. Over the years, he has been involved in Radio and TV. At one time he was both the Producer and Host of the only English speaking nationwide radio show in Portugal. He has appeared several times on RTP1 the International Portuguese TV channel with many original mental effects. He has been a judge at magic contests including S.A.M in New Orleans 2001. He lectures and writes on magic. His work on magic has been featured in many publications and sites including ABRAcadabra, The Linking Ring, MUM, The Wizard's Report, O Magico, The Magic Circular, The Banshee, Smoke & Mirrors, Mr.Gadfly, taom.org, magicwebchannel.com and he was the author of the FISM 2000 article published in the March 2000 issue of MAGIC. He has acquired a reputation for his interviews entitled ' Tony Brook In Conversation With …' - a series of articles, which has featured several leading names including - Dan Garrett, Eugene Burger, George Saterial, Bob Blau, Bob Knigge, Scott Wells, Walter Zaney Blaney, Joaquin Ayala, Mike Stratman and Jon Racherbaumer. Last, but by no means least, he is the proud father of Award winning International magician Charles Brook. Tony Brook sums up his philosophy on magic as follows:- " Magic must always be pure Entertainment. The real magic begins after the curtains close and they being talking about your act. What other profession in the world has 2000 people on their feet giving you a standing ovation for intriguing them?" -------------------------------- 19. The Amazing 'Orchante' Saga - Page 148 ---------------------------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) - EPILOGUE - The first episode of my saga (the foreword) appeared in issue No. 44, of Alan and Michele Watson's Magic New Zealand e-zine, on Sunday 22nd October. 2000. Three Years, Four Months and 102,258 + Words Later, and I have finally finished the New Zealand phase of 'The Amazing Orchanté' Saga. My warmest wish is that this mammoth 'work of love', has perhaps brushed some ancient cobwebs aside, bringing back long forgotten personal reminiscences for many of my fellow New Zealand entertainers, especially those of my vintage. 'Names', shows, concerts, agents, and the many clubs/restaurants, like the 'Dutch Kiwi' and the Toby Jug; those wonderfully historic - 'golden days of times past' - that all of us were lucky to be a part of. None of us (or future entertainers) will ever see the like of them again! I can't begin to guess how many hours have gone into this phase of my memoirs. Hours? More like months - of searching and pouring over diaries, letters, newspapers, magazines and clippings; anything that I could find in my seemingly bottomless - 'tardis' like, aluminium trunk; apart from scraping the top, bottom and sides of my memory banks. I dare not even think how many cartridges of black ink or reams of paper have been used, so far. And the wastage? Have you ever watched a film where the actor/actress was playing the part of an author suffering from - 'writers block'? They would type a word or two, or… then suddenly stop, stare blankly at the page for a moment before ripping the sheet out from the machine, crumple it into a ball then hurl it across the room, to join a sizeable pile of similarly scrunched up and discarded paper balls. That little scenario used to amuse me, until I realized that my wastepaper bin was constantly overflowing with, and surrounded by scrunched (I just love that word), screwed up paper balls that were frustratingly, forcibly fired towards it. That image isn't quite so amusing anymore! I am enormously grateful to several friends who have, without a quibble, helped me whenever I needed information - cajoling them to delve into the murky depths of their own memories; making sure that I had my facts right. I'm not perfect - pretty damn close mind you (I am a Virgo), but just a trifling fallible, as we all are. Mmmmm! My appreciation and acknowledgments to: Sally Metzger (nee Philips) and her husband, Derek Metzger (top singer in major theatrical musicals), Sharon Moore (my first wife, who remains a great friend, and her husband John), Pat Newbury (wife of Peter Newbury, trick cyclist, acrobat, 'Crunchy the Clown' etc.) Burns Scandrett ('Delarno', magician, semi-retired), John Sullivan (theatre manager, retired CHCH.), Trevor Hodson ('Jon Zealando', magician, ventriloquist, fakir etc.), Eddie O'Strange (Blue Smoke Music Co. N.Z.), Trevor King (tour and theatre manager, retired, CHCH.), Mike Brittenden, Alan Watson ( N.Z.'s No.1 magician, and editor of the Magic New Zealand e-zine), Eddie Low (who is, in my humble opinion, N.Z.'s No.1 vocalist), Richard Webster (N.Z.'s most prolific, No. 1 author), and last but certainly not least, my wife (and assistant/partner) of 32 years, Veronica. Page - 149 I'm feeling extremely homesick right now and when I'm in that sort of mood, I tend to play a particular track off a CD that was recorded by my friend and mate, Eddie Low. I wrote up Eddie's story, starting back on page 129, and on page, 133, 2nd paragraph, I made mention of the number that I listen to when I'm feeling 'down'. Eddie wrote the song which is entitled: 'SONGS OF HOME'. Here are the words, and perhaps when you read them, you may understand why they mean so much to me; I've seen a table full of tough kiwi lads at a RSL (Returned Services League) in Sydney, Australia, brought to tears while listening to Eddie singing this song, myself included! There's a land far across the ocean And I hear it calling me home It's my homeland, my own land, New Zealand And I miss her wherever I roam And the songs that I love remind me Of the places and people I know Till the day I return to my Loveland You'll hear me singing wherever I go Chorus: And I'll sing MEHE MANURERE, E WHITU NGA WAKA HOKI MAI and POKAREKARE ANA And I'll sing HAERE RA E HINE and WAIKAREMOANA Mean home sweet home to me I can see silver streams and rivers Quiet forests that stand proud and tall And I remember the home folk being The friendliest people of all And the green grass, the lakes, and mountains They seem to be calling out loud To come home to the land I was born in To the land of the long white cloud (Chorus) x 2 Thank you Eddie, for a great song; it means much to a kiwi who is lost between two shores! The words in the chorus are the titles of very famous, well known Maori songs that you will hear sung at just about every party you go to in New Zealand, especially if somebody has a guitar, and it would be a pretty rare thing if there was not at least one guitarist hanging around. You just ain't been to a party, until you've been to a - Good Old Kiwi-Style 'Bash', where the booze, food, music and friendliness flow, in great abundance! 'HAERE RA AOTEAROA' (Farewell New Zealand) 'Mŕku e ringiringi ki aku roimata nga ara e ahu ana ke te kâinga' (I will water with my tears the trails that lead to home) ------------------------------------- 20.
