Editor's Message ------------------------------------- Message from Alan Watson - The Magic One Michele and I are overwhelmed with all the congratulatory messages we have received as this year’s recipients of the DRAGON award and will endeavour to reply to all messages over the next week. It was a memorable moment as we received DRAGON Award medals, check for $US1,000, the Order of the DRAGON pins and a beautiful plaque on stage in front of our peers in magic. It was great to work in the Close Up Gallery at the Magic Castle again and also meet up with Steve and Jan Dacri at long last. Michele and I performed the early session and Steve was on the late session in the Close Up Gallery. We enjoyed seeing some great performers at the Magic Castle, Wizards and the S.A.M. convention. One of the major highlights for us was seeing the high standard of stage competition, especially the juniors, some great up and coming talent. ---------------------------------------------------- Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com ---------------------------------- 2. 2002 DRAGON Award Goes To New Zealand Couple ---------------------------------- Message from Jane Stuart, President - The J. Marberger Stuart Foundation, Inc. 2002 DRAGON Award Alan and Michele Watson from New Zealand were presented with the 2002 DRAGON AWARD by The J. The award consists of four parts: DRAGON AWARD medals, the Order of the DRAGON pins, a plaque and a thousand dollar cash prize. Jane Stuart, President of The J. The DRAGON AWARD name is taken from the criteria for winning. Recipients must demonstrate outstanding talent in the categories of Drama, Romance, Artistry, Glamour, Originality and Necromancy (magic). Past winners of the DRAGON AWARD are: Petrick and Mia Marvyn and Carol Roy Mark Wilson and Nani Darnell Chuck and Jan Jones Duo Absolon Harry Blackstone, Jr. and Gay Blackstone Glenn Falkenstein and Frances Willard Mike Caveney and Tina Lenert John and Pam Thompson Moi-yo Miller and Arturo Montes Fantasio and Monica Ed and Nanci Keener John and Kathy Daniel Lee and Helene Grabel Peter and Coral Reveen Paul and Debbie Daniels The Society of American Magicians Hall of Fame and Magic Museum, Inc. has dedicated a wall to winners of the DRAGON AWARD. As winners of the 2002 DRAGON AWARD, Alan and Michele Watson presented an autographed picture to the Hall of Fame for inclusion on the DRAGON AWARD wall. Representing the Hall of Fame at the DRAGON AWARD ceremony was Ed Thomas, the incoming President of the S.A.M. and Operations Officer of the Society of American Magicians Hall of Fame and Magic Museum, Inc. Richard J. Stuart, Executive Vice President of The J. Marberger Stuart Foundation, Inc. and President of the Parent Assembly of the S.A.M., presented Ed Thomas with an autographed program of the 2002 DRAGON AWARD reception to add to the Hall of Fame’s collection. Prior to the official award ceremony on July 4th, the 2002 DRAGON AWARD reception was held in honor of Alan and Michele Watson at the home of Jane Stuart, President of The J. Marberger Stuart Foundation, Inc. The private, black tie event was attended by approximately 50 top magicians from all over the world. Alan and Michele Watson are generally recognized as New Zealand’s greatest magicians. They were the first close up magicians from New Zealand to appear at the Magic Castle. The late Bill Larsen, then President of the Magic Castle said that their act was “of the highest quality” and called Alan Watson “one of the finest talents to appear at the Magic Castle.” The Watsons performed a repeat engagement at the Magic Castle immediately prior to receiving the DRAGON AWARD at the S.A.M. Centennial. The late J. Marberger Stuart, founder of the DRAGON AWARDS, considered the Watsons to rank among the top magicians of the World. In praise of one of their performances at the Magic Castle, he wrote: “Dear Alan Congratulations on your marvellous success at the Magic Castle in Hollywood California. My wife Marjorie and I thoroughly enjoyed your show, which we saw many times. We were especially delighted by the style and charm, which shone throughout your entire performance. As a judge of many magic competitions in the United States and Europe, includes the most recent FISM, I have been privileged to see many fine magicians. I can honestly say that I consider you to rank among the top magicians in the world. I envy the people of New Zealand who have an opportunity to see your world class magic on a regular basis. Please come to the United States more often. New Zealand should share its star performer with us all. Best wishes for your continued success Sincerely (signed) J Marberger Stuart" Alan Watson is the International Deputy to the Society of American Magicians for New Zealand. Magical Arts Festival - Toronto, Canada ---------------------------------- Message from James Biss Our plans are going well for this year's MAGICAL Arts FESTIVAL during the last week of September in Toronto, Canada. As you've no doubt heard it's modelled on the successful Jazz Festivals done around North America. We've now capped our TEN partipating venues as follows: 5 Bar Venues for Stand-up shows (and a wee bit of close-up and personal experiences): The Charlotte Room Big Daddy's RD's BBQ Joe Badali's Vinnies and 5 Restaurant Venues for Close-up experiences over dinner (6-8PM) Red Tomato The Whistling Oyster The Duke of Argyle Duncan Street Grill and of course, our HQ this year... The Hilton Toronto's Barristers/Tundra bars which is Queen and University within sight of the Toronto Entertainment District. ....All running concurrently the week of September 23rd, and all within a short walk of each other. ... And we're now beginning to build the performer's schedule... And I'd love to get your help in getting more magicians involved by spreading the word. We're going to try and schedule two or three venue/evenings for each interested participating conjuring artist, depending upon their work, availability and comfort level. Stand-up shows will consist of two "sets", approximately 20 minutes each in length. The shows will run at approx. 8PM and 9:30PM and will consist of two performers plus a magical Host/MC. The two performers will split the cover charges collected at the door, which based on last year, will typically be about $250-300 gross for the evening. Food and beverage sales go to the venue, door covers go the artists - that's the formula we'll be using. For the restaurant venues, which are for strolling close-up magicians, two hours will be expected, from roughly 6PM - 8PM. The venues will pay a fixed fee (to each of one or two magicians) of $150 per evening - with tips optional. No cover charges will be taken at the door. Last year, our first, our venues were filled every night and we're looking for more great success in this our second, more developed year! James Biss Artistic Director MAGICAL Arts FESTIVAL 416-410-7175 P.S. Details will soon be posted at www.magical.com our official site ---------------------------------- 10. He will be the first ever President from the Southern Hemisphere and the seventh non American resident since the IBM was formed in 1922.There have been three Canadian and three British residents that have been Presidents of the IBM in the last 80 years but never any from below the equator. His installation should take place in Cleveland Ohio in the first week of July 2004. He plans to visit Rings, Conventions and magical gatherings around the world between July 2004 and July 2005 and expects to be out of New Zealand for over six months of that year. This is a wonderful honour for Tony and for magic in New Zealand. Congratulations Tony! ---------------------------------- 11. Darren Romeo, The Singing Magician ---------------------------------- Message from Don Drake (US) There is a new afternoon magic show in Las Vegas, at the Mirage Hotel and Casino, in the Siegfried and Roy theater. Darren Romeo, the singing magician as he is called, puts on one great show! I do not say this lightly, but Darren has one of the best shows I've seen in a long time. It starts at 3 in the afternoon, and is positively worth whatever the ticket price is. (I haven't that information at the moment.) He is a terrific singer with a Broadway voice, par none, and the illusions are incredible. If you get here, please stop and catch this show. It's a killer! ---------------------------------- 12. 10 Great Reasons To Come To Las Vegas ---------------------------------- 10 Great Reasons To Come To Las Vegas IN SEPTEMBER! 1. Lance Burton 2. Magic Circle 7th May 2002 Wayne Rogers ---------------------------------- Message from Russell Levinson & James Fortune (UK) Onto a stage filled with tables and boxes burst New Zealander Wayne Rogers, otherwise known as “The Amazing Chicane”. He immediately went into a version of Don Wayne’s “Pranky hanky” where a bright yellow silk frolicked up and down a cloth, scampering from hand to hand, peeking over his shoulder and under his arm before he attempted to shut it in a shoebox. Unfortunately, it continually tried to get out until he finally shut the whole thing up in a suitcase. A wonderful routine created, as Wayne fully explained, by his wholesale re-working of the original gimmick. Wayne went on to explain the history of his ‘Appearing products’. He then demonstrated all his products, giving us little pointers on how to handle them properly the “Appearing Pole”, the “Do-It-Yourself Funeral Kit” (Shovel), the “Missing Spade”, the “Ladder from Briefcase”, the “Appearing Broom “and the prototype of his new item, an “Appearing Hat Stand” yes, you too can be Mary Poppins! The “Appearing Broom” was used in a comedy mind-reading effect where the spectator chose a household item at random. Wayne explained that the props were not enough in themselves, you needed to incorporate them into a routine. To illustrate this, he showed us his “Instant Fireman Kit”. From a briefcase he removed a fireman’s hat, a flaming map "shows you where the hot spots are", a full sized fire hose and a small toy ladder. "Well, I can’t keep a full-sized one in my briefcase can I?” He then removed the full-sized “Appearing Ladder”. Wonderful! Then came two great children’s effects. The first was called “Pinocchio’s Nose”. A piece of dowel is shown and the children are encouraged to lie as much as they can until the dowel grows and grows. The other was a combined puppet routine that starts with “Rocky Raccoon”, moves onto a brilliant idea of using a computer mouse as if it was a Dan Garrett “Judy the Mouse” and, finally, a lovely sponge ball routine with his pet crow, Russell. Geddit? Then it was time for a comedy torn & restored paper trick that Wayne calls ”Recycled Toilet Paper”; he credited the original idea to Mike Caveney and a 60's Abra. The “Name Dropper” was a practical use of the reverse Svengali principle credited to the Second Book of William, with a variety of uses for promoting the performer, restaurant or corporate promoter, together with a side-on riffle display to conceal the well-known principle. The “Card on Blue Stake” (think about it!) got a terrific reception. A chosen card, thrown with the pack into another of Wayne¹s paper bags ended up impaled on a thick wooden stake about four feet long. Wayne got a huge laugh by claiming it was the chosen card even though only the white edges of the card had survived the ordeal! But then he proved his claim by tipping out the inner section of the card from inside the stake itself. The lecture notes from the Chicane 2002 Lecture Tour NOTHING TO DECLARE - Did You Pack Your Own Bags Sir are well illustrated and very thorough. I wanted to let all the Genii faithful know about the upcoming Las Vegas Magic Invitational (lvmi.net for more info) that will take place September 15-17th 2002 at the San Remo hotel in magical Las Vegas! This is a close-up/cabaret convention with some of the top close-up magicians in the world performing and lecturing. A partial list includes magicians: AARON FISHER * BOB FITCH * CHRIS KORN * NATHAN KRANZO * ERIC MEAD *GARY NORSIGIAN * APOLLO ROBBINS and more!!! Our goal was to create a West Coast Close-up Convention that will give you three days of fun, sun and magic in the magical capital of the world … Las Vegas. Because the convention deals with close-up magic, attendance is limited. Visit our web site (lvmi.net) and see photos from last year's convention and all the registration/hotel info is there as well. Danny Archer and Robert Allen produce the LVMI (if you go to IBM convention in San Diego we will both be there. Danny's lecture is 10AM on July 3rd). Update On MagicWebChannel.com ---------------------------------- Message from Steve Dacri (US) Terry Seabrooke, the one and only, has recently joined the Panel of Magic Advisors of the MagicWebChannel.com, (along with Alan Watson!) Here is a clip from his latest column... Well, the old country has recovered as the Dacri's have left us at last!!!!!. to be honest it was a joy having them around. They were great fun to work with at the Southport convention (Easter Parade) and I did enjoy working some comedy bits with Steve in which somehow we got laughs!!!!!. The evenings at my local Conservative Club were just great and the snooker matches with my son Keith and Steve were like a mini-Olympic Games. I have a feeling that Steve could be a very good Pool hustler!!. So finally they left our country to us natives, and I thought I can now get on with some work and writing and hurtling around town on one nighters, but forgetting what time of the year was coming up. At this point I must explain that I just love all sport, and we were then right in the season where just about everything was going on. The soccer world cup, cricket test matches with Sri Lanka, formula one auto races, the Derby our biggest horse race and the famous Royal Ascot horse racing festival, and on top of all this the Queens Golden Jubilee. It is all too much for a sports lover like me!!!!. To read the rest of Terry's writings, log on to MagicWebChannel.com (its free) and look for Terry Seabrooke's World... ---------------------------------- 17. Sean Taylor's New Lecture - East To West ---------------------------------- Message from Tim Ellis & Sue-Anne Webster (Aust) This is his new 2002 lecture, so named because the tour will cover the whole of Australia and NZ in one month. The items in this lecture are all new, they are all a bit more off-beat and perhaps a little less mainstream than you have come to expect from Sean! All of the effects can be made or put together at home and use everyday magic items (this is not a dealer dem, he will however be bringing and demonstrating around ten effects from the shop in the second part of the evening). Just so you know what to expect here are some of the highlights, as described by Sean: "TRIPLE TOSSED - A Taylored re-work of the classic Hoy 'Tossed Out Deck' which is already used by my mentalist and magician buddies around the globe and is the perfect opener to any stand-up performance. TWIST 'N' SWITCH - A super spiffy and easy peasy deck switching thingy which can be used in many, many different effects. BLENDACIOUS - A bold and different approach to the classic silk blendo combining two items that many of you will already own to take four hankies through two transformation stages creating a blended hankie with no cover! PSYCHO POKER - Probably the stand-out effect of the lecture and I'm already under pressure to release this commercially. A mixed up deck of scrap and used cards is shuffled and cut and used to play a bizarre game of poker. With your back turned and without touching the cards at all you are able to tell what hand the spectator has, what you have and beat them, keeping your million dollar stake safe. WEIRD and Very clever. TWO FACED DECEPTION - You are going to hear a lot about this in the future. This is a new generation gimmicked deck with a myriad of uses. We show you step by step how to make it! EXSTRAWDINARY - This was invented by my friend Steven Penson, a 15 year old Super Magician! The effect is sick! produce a McDonalds drinking straw from your nose, yes you read that right! WORLDS COLLIDE - Coincidence or magic? Caused a sensation when I showed this at the Geniis club. You stand back to back with a spectator, each of you selects a card from your own deck and reverses it. Somehow they match. Devastating and uses something you may already have in your pocket! DESTINATION KNOWHERE - The Aussie travel trick. Spectator has a choice of 100 possible destinations around Australia for a fantasy day out. Somehow you know where they are going! Walk round mental quickie. RIPPED OFF AGAIN - My re-working of a little known Karrel Fox classic which has been my walk round closer for around 3 years. Funny and mind-blowing. TIME LORDS - A weird time travelling card effect. Two signed cards are placed in a wallet. They become unsigned and return to the deck, they become resigned and appear back in the wallet and then for the fabulous, futuristic, fused finale they become one weird take home souvenir card." The Orchante Saga #111 ---------------------------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Trevor King - Q S M. ‘The Master’ - The Legend! The key figure behind the successful shows of many local and international entertainers touring New Zealand, has been Trevor King, tour manager extraordinary for the Kerridge - Odeon organisation. If you were living in Christchurch there must surely have been times when you've been slowly edging towards the entrance door to ‘His Majesty's’ or the town hall amid an expectant throng of theatregoers all eager to enjoy a night of glamorous excitement on stage, when suddenly a voice of anguish from a programme seller or ticket seller summons a tall, efficient looking, saviour! Maybe someone has been double-booked, or the programme seller has run out of change. Whatever the crisis, it is the job of the tour manager to put it right, in an instant. But these instances are surely minute among the countless duties to which Trevor King has attended throughout his career as New Zealand's most experienced tour manager. Trevor is a well - known Christchurch identity; he began in theatres as an ice-cream boy and progressed, over the years and through the ranks, to have managed the Christchurch theatre chain for the Kerridge Odeon Organisation. Always approachable, and with a brilliant and dry wit, he makes new friends daily, but never forgets the older acquaintances, often dropping them a line or reminiscing over a polite ale or two. Show people are mysterious people. You never know what to expect of them. Some are the happiest and most enjoyable people imaginable. Others are downright impossible. Either way, they are ‘Show Business’, and Trevor King knows show business and its people, better than anyone I know, in New Zealand. He has rubbed shoulders with the Stars, and many of them still correspond with him. The walls of Trevor’s home bear mementos of his involvement with innumerable visiting artists. He has toured with performers such as the Beatles, the Vienna Boys Choir, Andy Stewart, Gene Pitney, the Seekers, Rolf Harris, and Frank Ifield, to name a few. (I gave an extensive list back on Page 107). Of the Beatles, he says, “Nice boys – I had no trouble with them”. Entertainment has been in Trevor’s blood since his days as a boy in Sydenham when he used to charge his friends a penny to watch ‘magic lantern’ slides, with a free comic thrown in. He ran a Youth Club for many years, and thousands still know him as ‘Uncle Trev’ from the days of his ‘Saturday Chums Club’ at the old Liberty Theatre. As I mentioned earlier, he worked as an ice-cream boy at the Metro Theatre in Sydenham and, before long, he had been promoted to doorman. That duty earned him half-a-crown a night – a sum he took a week to earn - as an ice-cream boy. Leaving school at 14, he gained full time Theatre work, and was Custodian at the age of 16. Soon he was Publicity man at the old St. James Theatre, where he was responsible for advertising movies in the Newspapers, and the Posters in front of the Theatre. Trevor’s intimate knowledge of the screen world and its workings quickly took him into Theatre management and, by the time he retired, he had managed every Theatre in Christchurch. A devoted Elvis Presley fan (I bought him a very good book about ‘Elvis’ myself, as a way of saying ‘Thank You’ for the rare publicity/photographs/reviews he has sent me - at enormous cost I must add, which must have put a small dent in his wallet - of my own ‘personal hero’ Franquin), Trevor has every record his ‘King’ namesake ever made, and met him after a concert in Madison Square Gardens, New York, where Elvis autographed a photograph for him. He has also met boxing great, Muhammad Ali, and is equally proud of the autographed photo with which he was presented. Trevor has no difficulty in naming the performers with whom he most enjoyed travelling: (The Vienna Boys Choir have that honour). He says, “They were a pleasure to work with – well-mannered, cheerful and friendly.” He became a real “Uncle Trev” to the boys on their visits and, so impressed the touring company that they insisted on returning some of the kindness by this unusual gesture. When he visited Vienna in 1977 during a tour of the United States and Europe, he was given the VIP Suite, which is maintained by the school that the boys attend.
