Editor's Message ------------------------------------- Message from Alan Watson - The Magic One If any Auckland magicians require doves I have six to give away. Good to catch up with our friends, Glenn and Bobbie Fujimoto from Hawaii who are presently on a New Zealand tour. I have had many magicians forward on Abb Dickson's message on the latest news regarding the Masked Magician. Tony Wilson's was the first to forward this information on to me. ---------------------------------------------------- Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com ---------------------------------- 2. Here's The Latest On The Masked Magician ---------------------------------- Message from Abb Dickson (US) From: Arts and Lifestyle Television Tuesday, April 16, 2002 Fox Says It'll Expose Blaine's Ice Escapade Fox is aiming to melt the mystique around illusionist David Blaine, who two years ago encased himself in ice for an ABC-TV special. David Blaine In a May 15 Fox special, a masked magician will show the tricks Blaine used to survive in a 6-ton ice cube for more than 61 hours. "We're going to reveal how something like that can be done," said a Fox source. "It's well known within the magic community how that stunt was pulled off." Two years ago, Blaine described his popsicle impression as an endurance test. "There was no trick to it," said producer Bill Kalush, who said Blaine immersed himself in tubs of ice to train for the deep freeze. Donna Petrozzello Dear WAM supporters.... As reported in our website, the masked magician is "at it again"..... This time attacking David Blane and other "Street Magic" effects, new illusions and effects exposed, etc. As we have done before, WAM encourages you to tape the show, and write letters to the sponsors i m m e d i a t e l y after the show, to impact Fox's pocketbook. Poor ratings will affect the show, but consumer letters and critical letters to sponsors will potentially affect the re-runs of the show! WAM Also needs your donations and support to help us in our costs! "King Of Levitations" ---------------------------------- Message from Dutch Haling We wanted to share with your readers our newest illusion -- the" 3 in 1 ". As a young man who was interested in illusions, I frequently found myself drooling over high priced illusions and fantasizing about the day when I would plunk down my $3,000 to $12,000 US dollars and become the "King of Levitations". The first levitation I bought was an old aga type levitation for which I paid $1500. It was my pride and joy. However, after only 1 week of rehearsal it broke and being young and inexperienced in the realities of illusions I threw it away. I was out $1500 and my dream of floating myself or my assistant mysteriously thru the air was over for the time being. As I continued doing magic the levitation was always on my mind. Later in life I started doing shows as "Lorenzo and Lorraine" One night as we sat in a bar after a particularly rough show a thought came to me concerning my long time dream of levitations. My hand flew to a pen and on a dinner napkin the ideas which had been festering for years came to life. I had finally thought of a way to make the perfect levitation! Now I had the knowledge of what happens back stage, the problems with transportation, the unreliability of illusions and the problems of exposure. I have always been ticked off at the standard theory that goes with illusions and the high prices charged for often inferior equipment. We've all heard it, "Your buying the secret, not the illusion". Look, lets be real. As an experienced working illusionist I already know the secret -- I want the equipment. So with that in mind the "3 in 1" was born. This illusion has been tried and tested for 2 years and is 100% reliable. Being made from cold rolled steel it is absolutely unbreakable. If you do wear out a piece of it somehow or drive over it with a tank -- replacement parts can be picked up at any metal shop in the world. It uses no hydraulics, no electricity and is always ready to use. With this new illusion a magician now has the ability to do 3 different levitations including; a vertical or stand up, a standard horizontal or a flying carpet type. Plus -- and here's the good part -- I was tired of seeing high priced illusions on the market and wanted to make this affordable for all so we priced it at only $899.00 if you order before June 28th. The "3 in 1" offer magicians the opportunity to explore their creativity and add a spectacular illusion to any show. All it requires is a backdrop and one backstage assistant. We have used the "3 in 1" on a nightly basis in our show for the past two years. We've had "Lorraine" on a flying carpet not only levitate, but fly across the stage as well! Currently, we end the show with a vertical levitation that takes "Lorraine" 4 1/2 feet off the ground. If you're interested in seeing the "3 in 1" in action a video is available at www.lorenzoandlorraine.com I know the "3 in 1" will give magicians the lift they are looking for in their performances. Imagine, an illusion built by a magician for magicians. Thanks, Dutch Haling (Lorenzo) "Lorenzo and Lorraine" lorenzo-lorraine@msn.com ---------------------------------- 6. Vale Lyndsay Rietschel ---------------------------------- Message from Russ I have lost a close magical friend of over 40 years with the sudden passing of Lyndsay Rietschel aka Russ Landel, particularly around the entertainment areas of Melbourne where he performed professionally for many years. Lyndsay was an accomplished musician on piano, organ and keyboard, and a very capable magician and compere. Beside performing throughout Victoria he also entertained in the Riverina and Hunter Valley areas of N.S.W., along the Murray River, in Broken Hill and in northern Tasmania. Before moving to country Victoria and not enjoying the best of health, in the last few years, Lyndsay attended Magic Conventions in Melbourne, Ballarat, Adelaide, Sydney, Parramatta, Newcastle, Brisbane and overseas. He was always in demand as a performer, judge, compere or musician. Once he arrived, even if you didn't see him, you knew he was there. He was boisterous, cheeky, humorous, likeable and knowledgeable. He was well skilled in stagecraft, presentation, sound, lighting and through his background as a designer in the garment industry, in colour and clothing. In 1977 Lyndsay, with his long time friend, Ken Warner, and Don Dewer started the Young Magicians, training many youngsters in the art of performing magic. Former Young Magicians, who are making their living from magic, include Tim Ellis, Michael Boyd, Paul Bowen, Duc Cameron, Mike Roberts, Peter Brown and Don Crawford. Other pupils went into different careers but all maintain Lyndsay changed their lives for the better. Several musical friends and 22 magicians together with family and other friends attended his funeral at Lillydale on Thursday, 11th April. Mike Roberts spoke of him and Ken Warner conducted the Broken Wand ceremony. The curtain has closed for the last time on "the Fat Man ---- the Biggest Thing in Show Business" but I'm sure he will be remembered for a long time by all who knew him. "How about that?" Russ!! ---------------------------------- 7. News Flash The 28th Australian Convention ---------------------------------- Message from Kent Blackmore (Aust) The 28th Australian Convention has some disappointing news, followed by some extremely good news! Unfortunately our good friend and manager of Lance Burton, PETER REVEEN, has been unavoidably prevented from attending the convention. He sends his regrets and best wishes. The good news can be summed up in just four words. Billy McComb is coming. If you're still reading, maybe you haven't been in magic very long, because he doesn't really need much more introduction. Just awarded the prestigious Masters Fellowship by the Academy of Magical Arts, Billy McComb will shortly be performing for the cool crowd as the opening act in Amazing Jonathan's Las Vegas show. Known variously as the Irish Leprechaun, the Walking Encyclopedia, and Sir Billy, McComb has created many of the great magical standards of our time. His Half-dyed Silk and the McCombical Deck are regular features in acts worldwide. Lance Burton uses McComb's presentation of the Vanishing Birdcage. His books of magic are classics of practical worker's material. And if there is a trick that Billy didn't either invent, help to invent or improve in some way, then he knows who did and has a story to tell about it. Billy McComb has been everywhere, done it all and will regale you with hilarious tales of magicians and their misadventures, as well as teaching you strong magic which you can actually use. Little wonder that MAGIC magazine included him in their list of the Top 100 most influential magicians of the twentieth century. Add to this our already-announced star artists, FISM-award winners LENNART Green and MAGIC CHRISTIAN, and you'd kick yourself to miss out. What, you want more? MOI-YO MILLER, Dante's leading lady, will be here to tell us about the years of the Sim-Sala-Bim show! There are dealers from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. There are THREE big evening shows in the Riverside Theatre, including PHIL CASS with his full comedy magic show, and TONY & JULEEN presenting their newest illusion. Have you registered yet? There's still room, but time is running short! Competition entries have been extended until the end of this month, but places are filling quickly and will definitely be closed next month. All advertising for the souvenir brochure is now closed. The convention is from June 7 - 10 at the Riverside Theatres and Carlton Hotel, Parramatta. Making Magic Pay ---------------------------------- Message from ©2002 by Steven Pradell (Alaska) The ability to create magic is a precious gift. Unfortunately, many magicians who perfect their artistic skills learn little about marketing and selling their services. No matter what your goals are, earning an income from all of your hard work will at least enable you to buy the decks of cards, gaffed coins and other magical supplies which you need to continue to perform your tricks. As an entertainer and an attorney, I know that using both sides of our brains is essential if we are to succeed in the rewarding business of entertainment. There are some simple steps that you can take which will assist you in your efforts to succeed economically as an artist. First and foremost, make certain that any the terms of any agreements you make to perform magic for money are clearly set forth in writing. Having a written contract signed by you and a booking agent, bar owner, or bar mitzvah mom will enable both you and your client to eliminate many of the problem issues which may arise later if things do not go the way either of you anticipated. A contract should always contain certain essential information. This includes, at a minimum: -The names, signatures, and addresses of all parties who are making the agreement. -The date that the contract is signed by the parties. -The price of the performance, and the method and manner in which the money will be paid to the performer. -A cancellation clause, which describes what will occur if you or the person hiring you can not do what you agreed to do. -The place of the performance, and a description of what you agree to do at the performance. I have provided a sample contract that my entertainment business, Abracadabra, uses often in booking events. Please do not simply copy it. Instead, create your own form using the ideas in this article and other information which you know about your business so that your contract is uniquely tailored to your specific talents. The sample contract looks like this: ABRACADABRA ENTERTAINMENT AGREEMENT ABRACADABRA hereby agrees to provide the following: DATE OF PERFORMANCE: PLACE OF PERFORMANCE: TIME OF PERFORMANCE: REPORT TO: PRICE OF PERFORMANCE: PAYMENT TO BE MADE by check immediately following the show. Deposit of $ to be provided upon return of signed contract. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: ORGANIZATION OR INDIVIDUAL: MAILING ADDRESS: CANCELLATION POLICY: Should the person or organization booking the performance cancel it with less than 10 days written notice, it is agreed that ABRACADABRA shall receive one half the performance fee. STATUS OF PERFORMER: It is understood that all performers (except Steven Pradell) are independent contractors of ABRACADABRA and that ABRACADABRA is only a booking agency with regard to the performance. ABRACADABRA assumes no liability for any acts, negligent or intentional, by performer causing harm or damages arising out of the performance, and liability of ABRACADABRA, if proven, is limited to a refund of the amount of the performance price. AGREEMENT: To signify your agreement, please sign and date each contract and return one copy to ABRACADABRA at the address below. ACCEPTED (signature) (Agent for Organization or Individual booking event) Date AGENT FOR ABRACADABRA (signature) Date Insert magician's address: Insert magician's phone and fax number: The above is not to be considered to be legal or tax advice. Consult an attorney and/or tax adviser in your own country/state for information pertaining to these issues in. One of the benefits to having a good contract is that it will assist you when booking your events, and give a potential job prospect the assurance that you are a professional entertainer. Have a copy of your contract form in front of you when you make a call to inquire about a potential performance. As the questions which are on the contract and fill it in over the phone as you get the answers from your prospect. Once you have all of the information you need, quote your price and tell the hiring person that you will fax or mail the contract immediately. This tells your potential client that you are a professional, not just another flake with an amplifier who may not show up on time or at all. It is likely that your prospect may have reservations about hiring you simply because of bad past experiences with other entertainers who were not professional. Many decisions to hire magicians are made impulsively, so if you can get the contract faxed or mailed immediately, you may book the event before the prospect changes his or her mind. If the party who signs the contract fails to pay you or otherwise meet the obligations agreed to in the contract, the contract will serve as evidence if you decide to file a claim in court. Contracts are helpful to performers in many situations. If you are selling magical products which you create, having others do so on your behalf, having your performances or your original secrets recorded in a book, on cassette, video or DVD by others for resale, trying to sell your ideas to a professional performer, or doing anything which involves placing your talents before the public, you may need a written contract. These can be much more complicated than the simple agreement which is provided above. It may be wise to discuss your contract issues with an attorney before signing one, especially if a contract is offered to you prepared by someone else, to learn your rights and obligations. ---------------------------------- 9. This has been organised for me by Morley Budden of Kaymar Magic in Essex. Morley first began making the arrangements around 18 months ago, and now it is just about time to pack my bags and take off. Cartoonist Wayne Logue has produced the artwork for the cover of my lecture notes. "NOTHING TO DECLARE" depicts me at Customs with an assortment of ladders, brooms, shovels, spades, Poles, hat rack etc all exploding out of my open suitcase. A situation that COULD happen if someone wanted to take a look inside! My first stop is Dublin where I attend the Irish Convention. The lecturer line up is Aldo Colombini, Mark Mason, Pat Fallon and myself. I also perform on the gala show. Richard Pinner, who recently attended our New Zealand convention, is my contact at the Magic Circle in London. The full Tour Itinerary is as follows: May 3rd 4th 5th Dublin Convention 7th Magic Circle , London 8th Kaymar Magic, Upminster 9th Leatherhead, Surrey 10th Bradford 12th North Wales 13th Chester 14th Blackpool 15th Stoke-on-Trent 16 th Bristol 17th Weston-Super-Mare 19th Ipswich Convention 20th Anglia (Norwich) 21st BMS, Birmingham 22nd Wolverhampton 23rd Medway Kent 24th Cardiff 28th Aberdeen Scotland 29th Newcastle-upon-Tyne 30th Liverpool 31st Norwich I am looking forward to meeting up with the UK magicians, especially those I have corresponded with over the years but never met. Alan Watson and Paul Romhany have kindly written the introduction to my lecture notes. Paul in particular uses some of my ideas and props in his Charlie Chaplin act. He has been the inspiration behind a number of them, so I will leave Paul with the last word on my tour. "Wayne Rogers is one of the most creative magicians I have ever met, and I owe a lot to him for helping and inspiring me to put together the act that I now make a living from. In the past several years I have used more of Wayne's ideas in my professional act working on cruise ships and around the world more than any other manufacturer now from somebody who makes their living with magic that is saying something!! Unlike so many of today's magicians who dwell on moves and technique almost to the exclusion of effect, Wayne uses his sharp mind to develop outstanding tricks and routines that are certain to entertain as well as fool an audience. From close-up magic to large illusions Wayne has developed and created many original concepts my favourite is the appearance of a person from a small briefcase. The magic and ideas included in these lecture notes represent the direct, commercial and entertaining approach Wayne has towards our craft. I suspect many magicians will have trouble deciding, as I did, which is the best trick or idea in these lecture notes. What an enviable problem! The material in these notes are nothing short of sensational. If this is your first contact with the magic and ideas of Wayne Rogers, you are in for a treat. If you have previously encountered Wayne's magic, then you will no doubt realise that this is his best yet." Paul Romhany - somewhere on the high seas. ---------------------------------- 12. The Orchante Saga #102 ---------------------------------- Message from Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) A 'Blast From The Past'! A few weeks ago I received an E-mail from Jon Zealando, who has been my good friend since - hang on a moment while I brush the cobwebs aside and peer back, past the swirling mists of.. oh dear God, since 1959! My poor old bones are creaking, just thinking about it! Although his real name is Trevor Hodson, everybody as far back as I can remember, has always called him, 'JON'; I shall continue the tradition - anyway, it's easier to type three letters. He was telling me that he had been holidaying with his son Brian for four weeks in a camper-van, from Auckland - following the East-coast To Wellington then back up again via Palmerston North, calling on a few 'NAMES' from 'ancient' times that he thought may jog a few memories. They did! In Gisborne, Jon met up Mike Brittenden, who used to be on the committee organising the Christmas shows at the Sound Shell back in the Sixties. Jon informed me that Mike had an anecdote about myself. I asked Jon if he would contact Mike, requesting that he recount the 'story', in his own words, and if I could reproduce it here, in my Saga. Happily, Mike consented; here then, is his tale, word-for-word! From: Mike Brittenden Hi, Jon, Me, and my big mouth! The sands of nearly half a century have fallen into the glass of time since that incident. (How's that for an opening line!) It would have been somewhere between 1962 and 1967 - I'd have to root through the 'Herald's' morgue and look at the advertising to get any closer. There were just the two of us in the prefab ticket box that 'Chopper' Summersby had built. I am guessing that it was midweek, and a quiet night. I know that it was indifferent to 'shitty' weather, with a house to match. I made a point of never stopping selling tickets while there was movement in the carnival area, and always kept one window open until I heard the chaser. On occasion, the finale would conclude without this music and the crowd would ooze back to the camping grounds and car parks and the money takers would be unaware...There were always 'Internal Amusement Sources' within the ticket box when the windows finally closed. On this night, I was counting the cash when a 'scratch' on the door indicated that 'The Amazing ORCHANTÉ' was about to grace us with his presence. I had seen him before, but was unsure when. At first glance I thought he was Michael Chamberlain. He modestly introduced himself as a 'One Man' Show, and was looking for a spot. As you know, this was rather unusual. George Tollerton, Eddie Hegan, or Phil Warren (Well known LATE Auckland 'show biz' promoters - Tom), or whoever was co-ordinating our shows, prearranged the circuit months earlier, and we padded the weaker nights with talent quests, etc. During the course of discussing what he could do, Mr Orchard indicated that he was a - 'Hypnotist Of No Mean Calibre'! Helen, my girlfriend/fiancée/wife at the time, depending on the year, interrupted our conversation with the words, "And who are your stooges?" or something equally rude. Before I had a chance to intervene, Orchanté said something quietly to her, her knees sagged, and she was parallel to the pine needles on the wooden floor! She rapidly regained her feet, but made no further contribution to the conversation. Naturally, I arranged for him to get a spot, and he met the resident compere the following morning. Unfortunately I missed seeing his performance, and have not heard of him since until our conversation the other night. Over the intervening years I wonder if he realised how much I would have paid for that one secret, and in total confidentiality! Knowing how he did what he did would have changed the course of my life. With his secret, by now I would have been a "Has Been", instead of a "Never Was!" Hope this fills the bill, Ciao, Mike Thank you Mike! As I said to our old friend 'Jon', in our case it is more like - "DIDN'T YOU USED TO BE.?"; or - "WHAT'S AN -'ORCHANTÉ'?".
