Comedy Magic Workshop ---------------------------------- Message from George Zuk On Mar. 7-9, I attended my first Comedy Magic Workshop hosted by Steve Kissell. He has a series of 6 of these each year in various cities in the U.S.A. I would like to mention that I learned more, laughed more, experienced more magic than any convention or lecture that I have attended in the last 5 years. For me it was amazing. The lecturers were of a very high quality with the likes of: Steve Kissell - Norfolk, Virginia Barry Mitchell - Sevierville, Tennessee Dan Jordan - Valencia, California Duane & Mary Laflin - Troy, Montana Dave Risley - South Carolina Gary Shelton - Virginia Ron Conley - Myrtle Beach, South Carolina A very important part of this workshop was the fact that it was a "see and do" event where an enormous amount of learning and practice was available. All the lecturers were there to help, encourage and demonstrate their areas of expertise. I just don't have enough words to describe the value and excitement generated during this event. And, I have been told that my experience can be repeated at every workshop that Steve produces. So, to those magicians who would like to combine different varieties of humor with there magic from kid shows to close-up to stage and stand-up....these events will add a tremendous amount to your storehouse of options. The website for the Comedy Magic Workshop is: www.magicalwizard.com/cmw2002.htm Without a doubt, I will be at the Las Vegas workshop next year and possibly ore. Thanks for the opportunity to share my experience Alan and also for providing such a valuable site for the magic community of the world. ---------------------------------- 9. Kiwi Magician Bernard Reid ---------------------------------- Message from David J O'Connor (South Africa) On Tuesday this week the Cunard liner Q. E. 2. berthed at the port of Durban as part of her round the world cruise. On board was well known Kiwi magician Bernard Reid, so a great day was spent ashore in the company of this prolific and much traveled "funjuror". Thirty years at sea as a cruise ship magician, illusionist, pick pocket, comedian, and raconteur. Twenty seven of these sea going years has been with the same New York booking agent, who has kept our itinerant entertainer fully employed, and visiting almost ever port around the world. Next port of call is Capetown, with Bernard visiting the College of Magic. After an exchange and recap of events on the recent successful Auckland IBM Convention, we adjourned to Durban's high rise (32 floors) Roma Revolving Restaurant, accompanied by Noirin, and senior Cunard Cruise Director Colin Parker and his charming Japanese born fiancée Chisa. Naturally the talk was all about magic and entertainment with anecdotes about the famous and not so famous magicians Bernard has met and interviewed over the years. Readers of "Magicana" will know of the many, many "International Portraits" that Bernard has submitted over the years, which highlight the lives of professional magicians from the four corners of the globe, always accompanied by a brief historical overview of their particular country. I think it was a little confusing for our guests, that the restaurant turns a full 360 degrees during your meal, and is in no way connected to the amount of alcholol one consumes. The restaurant gives a panoramic view over the whole city and port, which is the largest in Africa. I'm sure the Indian waiters will for a long time remember the spoon hanging antics and bent cutlery at our table. During the course of the day I had the opportunity to obtain an insight into this out going globe trotting humorous entertainer. Not only is Bernard a wonderful comedy performer but he has a great passion and respect for magic. This passion expresses itself in Bernard's avid quest to search out rare and antiquarian magical memorabilia, and especially old books on magic. It is not too well known, that Bernard has possibly one of the largest private magic libraries in the world, containing many rare and pre -1900 copies, many autographed as collector's pieces. Not to mention his many bound volumes of Genii, Magicana, Abracadabra, Peter Warlocks Pentagram, Linking Rings, The Jinx, and many more, all carefully and safely stored away, awaiting appropriate cataloguing. However our Kiwi Magical Ambassador willingly shares his knowledge and literature so freely and is indeed a real magical historian. One of Bernard's aims is to one day correlate a complete history on New Zealand magic and magicians and has already begun extensive research into this massive task ahead. Fortunately New Zealand is quite unique in that it has such a colorful, fascinating magical heritage that goes back to well into the last century. This will be so worth recording for posterity, and for the benefit of those that will follow in our footsteps along the path of mystery and magical entertainment. Bernard is the sort of person who continually gives back so much to our beloved craft and his historical mementos will become sought after information and background for the new comers to magic in the future. In the months ahead Bernard will continue to entertain different nationalities on different cruise liners, and has a very full schedule for the next year, flying half way round the world at times to pick up various ships. When he joined the Q. E. 2. this time, he flew the equivalent of thousands of miles to join the ship in the Seychelles. However the baggage containing all his clothes and his SECOND SHOW did not arrive till he docked in Durban. This did not phase our man at all. He was loaned a tuxedo by the ships company, he begged lighter fluid from the barmen on board, (needed as an essential ingredient in his repertoire), and had to purchase a complete new wardrobe on the tiny Indian ocean island of Mauritius. ( I promised to make no comment about his flamboyant choice of exotic shirts) but the cruise director did ! By the way there is no truth in the rumour that Bernard sought employment in Durban at a city car park as a boom attendant! Just heard some mutterings about "so called 3rd world countries"................................. I vaguely remember entering the Roma Restaurant about 12-30 P.M. and hurriedly leaving soon after 5-30 PM, with barely enough time to get everybody back on board in time for the ships departure. It was quite an extended luncheon and I don't know whether it was the restaurant or ourselves that revolved the most? Wonderful company, and superb cuisine. Bernard thank you for visiting Durban, the super company, the magic chat, the ostrich steaks, and perhaps a little too much South African red wine! This made for a memorable and thoroughly enjoyable day, in the life and time of one of New Zealand's most successful performers, Bernard Reid. Beware of this extraordinary magician in his next port of call! Bon voyage. ---------------------------------- 13. Open Letter From I.B.M. Ring 332 ---------------------------------- Message from Joyce Basch (US) An Open Letter From I.B.M. Ring 332 ( Pocono Mountains, Pa.) To All Fellow Magicians Last Saturday, March 23rd, a fellow Ring member was seriously injured in an accident during a performance. Joe Raven (Jose' Rodriguez) lost all but the little finger on his left hand, and on his right hand the thumb was lost, when a vial of Flash Powder exploded in his hands. Joe's specialty was card, coin, and ball manipulation so any fellow magician can truly understand the devastating impact of this tragedy. Especially when you consider that he was scheduled to open a "School of Magic" in conjunction with the Y.M.C.A. next month. Our ring is completely shocked and saddened by this tragedy. His spirits are up and Joe vows to continue somehow, but the temporary loss of income and medical Bills are a serious reality. Joe is a semi-pro and his performances counted for a significant part of his income. He is still in the Hospital and undergoing several surgeries. With a wife and three young children at home the family is going to need some immediate help. As his fellow ring members, we realized that the funds raised in a local benefit show could never alone be sufficient to help in this serious and urgent situation. So we are reaching out to ALL magicians to take a moment to imagine yourself in this situation and to please take immediate action to help out in this matter. We are not asking for money. A special auction is being set up with www.magicauction.com in Joe Ravens name. They have been very generous and are preparing a seperate Joe Raven Fund page. It will be a 30 day, no-minimum-bid auction where all proceeds at the end of the auction would go directly to his family. We are asking all magicians worldwide who would like to contribute, to please donate just one magic item. We all have at least one decent item that is only collecting dust. That item could be put to good use for a truly good cause. It could be a Trick, Book, Poster or any Prop from off your shelf. You must ship the item directly to: ENCHANTED WOODSHOP LTD. 2 GRAND STREET HANCOCK, MD. 21750... and they will take care of the rest. Be sure to note that the item is for the Joe Raven Fund. We are truly hoping and praying for a serious all-out effort throughout the magic community to help a brother in a definite time of need. PLEASE forward this note and attached NEWS ARTICLES to all of your ring members and any other magicians you know. PLEASE spread the word and PLEASE donate an item for auction. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT CANNOT WAIT! ALL ITEMS MUST BE SENT TO THE AUCTION IMMEDIATELY SO THAT WE CAN GET FUNDS TO THE FAMILY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING AND COOPERATION, MEMBERS OF I.B.M. I have decided to number each page separately, as you would do, in a book. For those of you who may want to re-number the pages on your computer, as I have, the first page is actually the Foreword, the following page titled, 'THE BEGINNINGS', becomes, obviously, Page 1 - and so on. You may find that your computer will try to number the foreword as, Page 1 - if so just give it a 'good kicking'! On the occasions, when I refer to an earlier 'back number', I will also put the NEW actual page number in brackets alongside for references sake. For those of you who simply read the SAGA each week then, forget it (How Could You?), simply ignore all of the above. Regards, Tom Orchard (The Amazing ORCHANTÉ) ---------------------------------- 15. The Orchante Saga #98 ---------------------------------- Message from Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Rock n' Roll - The Show - Another Pilot/Adventure - Travelogue Many of the hotels I performed in didn't have a band and often asked if I could provide dance music after the show. No problem! With my collection of original vinyl 45's records (which I mentioned back on page 61 [now p.85], second paragraph), I recorded on my reel to reel tape recorder, a solid - Six Hour, Rock n Roll mix of non-stop 'HITS', starting from the late Fifties - right thro to the end of the Sixties, that was guaranteed to get anybody up on the floor and 'Rockin'! Played thro the amplifier/speakers that I used for my show - with the volume whacked right up, it sounded like every major Pop Singer and Instrumental Group was there, live! I reckon it must've been N .Z .s first 'Disco', and without all the inane screaming and chatter of today's Disc - Jockeys! The 'Orchanté Hotel Show', although about one hour in total length, consisted of three totally different acts, each was 20 minutes in length, with a 15 minute break between each one, which not only gave us time to set up for the next performance but more importantly, allowed the patrons to replenish their drinks, after all, pub/hotels do make their money from selling booze, apart from accommodation, of course! Kicking off at 8.15 p m. I started with my 'Sleight-Of-Hand Magic' show, and followed it 15 minutes later with the 'Yoga/Fakir' show, which consisted of, in sequence - Fire-eating, the - Beds of Nails, Sword Swallowing and finishing with the 'Psychic Surgery'. The final 20 minutes was taken up with the 'Mime' act, which may seem surprising because the spectacular 'Fakir Show' without doubt, was the far stronger of the performances! I discovered very early in the piece that by around 9:30pm a rather 'Boozed Up' audience did not really appreciate the more serious Fakir style show, what they wanted by then was a good laugh, and the rather risqué - to put it mildly, Mime Act - was just the ticket, to finish on a high note! Also surprising was the number of people who thought that more than one artist was involved - I guess because each act was so different (as was my stage clothing), from the other, especially the Fakir act, it was easy to mistake me for somebody else, and I only spoke, occasionally, during the magic show. Another thing worth noting, is that I played Rock n Roll music before the start of the show and during the breaks of each act, which kept the whole crowd in a happy mood - the atmosphere was more like a great big party! In many of the 'back water' hotels we performed in, especially down on the West coast of the South Is., the Liquor Licensing Laws have been flouted with impunity for years, consequently, 'THE PARTY' and my recorded music would carry on, long after the official closing time - Whoopee!! Last episode, I spoke about the two helicopter pilots I met at the Haast Pass Motor Hotel; well about a week later we were at a large hotel in Te Anau (for a two night show), a beautiful tourist town on the picturesque lake of the same name - about 105 miles (168km), south-west of Queenstown (Highways 6/94 - 2Hrs 45min.driving) - anyhow, talk about coincidences, I was chatting to some bloke and his son at the bar - telling him about my helicopter experiences up at the 'Haast' and bugger me if he doesn't 'floor' me with - "I'm a flight instructor out at the local aero club", and that if I wasn't busy he'd take me up the next day! Duly arriving at the airport I'm met by the son who informs me that his father had unexpectedly been booked to take some tourists on a 'lucrative' scenic flight, but that he, also a qualified pilot, would take me up for a 'jaunt', if that was okay by me. IT SURE WAS! Once we got up in the air he says - "Shall we do the usual tourist thing or, are you GAME for something a little different?" Without hesitation I said, "SOMETHING DIFFERENT"- without a clue of what he had in mind! I can't remember whether we headed South West to Manapouri, or North West across Lake Te Anau towards the world-renowned - 'Milford Sound'! Rudyard Kipling described it as the - "8TH WONDER OF THE WORLD"! What I do remember is the most gorgeous, spectacular and unbelievable scenery you can imagine, as my pilot 'friend' flew the little Cessna airplane, over dense forests, thro passes, across river flats, small lakes and up over majestic mountains. Is it any wonder then, that 'Kiwis' (New Zealanders), call New Zealand - 'GODS OWN'! We were flying over some mountain peaks - I'm guessing but I would estimate the height was around six or 7000 ft (213 3.6m), when he suddenly dropped the Cessna's nose as we flew over a crest and then, sharply banking the aircraft, started to circled down - instinctively, I knew that this was the - 'SOMETHING DIFFERENT'! Page 99 As we spiralled down we were completely encircled by towering, black mountains that appeared to be only feet away from the Cessna's wing tips, you sure wouldn't want to be claustrophobic! Continuing on a permanent steep bank angle, downwards - he pointed to the valley floor far below and says to me, "We're going to land down there, on that strip ". " What strip?" I queried as I desperately searched for anything that resembled a runway, and not seeing a thing - "There's simply nowhere that you can possibly land this aircraft!" Again pointing down he says, "See that strip of brown down there, that's it" . "You must be kidding, " I said, staring down, "That's only a minuscule pencil mark!" Now I'm not sure of my facts here, but I think he said that it was the top of a new hydro-electric Dam that was being built, but I can't find any references regarding a Dam being built down there during the early-Seventies, although a power-station was built - 700 ft under the mountains at 'West Arm', which is across the other side of Lake Manapouri and, a road was constructed from there to Deep Cove, but I don't know when, or what year it was built. The other possibility is, perhaps, the top of the 'Homer Tunnel', North-West of Lake Te Anau, not far from Milford Sound. Dear me, this narrative has turned unintentionally into - A TRAVELOGUE! The New Zealand tourist industry WILL be pleased! Eventually, we were just a few hundred feet off the valley floor as he flew over the 'landing strip', circled around - lined up and made a perfect landing on a length of dirt that was not much wider than the aircraft itself - the Cessna's wingspan is 36ft(10.97m) and requires 1570ft to takeoff - so I would guess that the actual length of the dirt strip was about 2000 ft, because there wasn't much left of it when we did eventually lift-off! No wonder then, that from five or 6000 ft up, the 'strip' was - to my eyes, nothing more than a mere - insignificant 'pencil mark'! One really does have to admire the flying skills of those pilots who, practically every day, fly in and out of these beautiful but extreme conditions - not just in New Zealand but around other places of the world as well, Canada for example! I've always wanted to learn to fly but was never in one place long enough to learn. Many years ago Peter Telling, a qualified pilot and an Auckland radio announcer/personality - I think he used to be on either Radio Hauraki or Radio I; took me up flying out at the Ardmore aerodrome. Peter, an accomplished aerobatics flyer, decided that it would be great fun if he could make a Sword Swallower - SICK! He threw the book at me! Aileron Rolls, Barrel Rolls, Loop Overs and Unders, the Falling Leaf - the lot! Fully expecting me to be 'Green Around The Gills' after putting me thro his idea of 'Torture', he gleefully enquired as to - 'How I Felt', and was rather 'Put Out' When, I replied, 'BRILLIANT'! It was the truth - I loved it! Peter gave me some rudimentary instructions on how to fly straight and level and, a couple of turns left and right, using the rudder pedals as well as the yoke. He told me later that I had natural co-ordination (Sleight-Of-Hand Magic - Training?), and learning to fly would be relatively easy for me. Oh well, never mind, I've got my - ' IT'S AS REAL AS IT GETS', SIMULATOR and, if it is good enough for the professionals, it is sure good enough for me! ------------------------------------- 16.
