"Nocturnal Trio" Gets Great Reviews ---------------------------------- Message from George Schindler- Public Relations - S.A.M. Combine beautiful harp music, a beautiful woman and two of the most revered performers in magic and you have a winning evening with the "Nocturnal Trio" made up of Tina Lenert, Eugene Burger and Max Maven. Their initial debut at the Magic Castle received nothing but "rave" reviews. When you combine heavenly music (Tina Lenert) and a range of magical emotions plus smart, mysterious, funny, sexy, performances brought forth by the commanding presence of Max Maven (mentalism & audience participation) all carefully blended with the joy of Eugene Burger's warm magic you have a winner. And they're coming to New York- The "Nocturnal Trio" is one of the featured evening presentations at the Society of American Magicians Centennial- July 3-4-5-6 (www.magicsam.com) ---------------------------------- 3. The Daytona Magic Festival ---------------------------------- Message from Harry Allen (US) We have the dates for our convention. The Daytona Magic Festival. Oct. 25-27th. Talent booked so far: Michael Finney, Dan Garrett, Harry Allen, Mehdi Talbi, and Jay Mattoili. More big names being booked. Details soon on our website. ---------------------------------- 4. Carter Beats The Devil ---------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) I have just returned from Mexico and while there read a fantastic novel by Glen David Gold that I highly recommend to all magicians and thEIR partners or anybody who just enjoys a good read. The book is called Carter Beats the Devil and is about Charles Carter aka Carter the Great, set in America in the 1920s. It is a thrilling story filled with historical references that evoke the excesses and exuberance of roaring twenties, pre-Depression America and is a complex and illuminating story of one man's journey through a magical - and sometimes dangerous - world, where illusion is everything. Mike Caveney had this to say about the book, "His historically based novel, Carter Beats the Devil, is layered with accurate descriptions of strange-looking apparatuses, the distinct language used by magicians, and with eccentric personalities that existed only during the heyday of vaudeville." If you want to read an excellent novel then I suggest you go to your local bookstore and see if they have it. ISBN 0-7868-6734-5 Just a reminder that I will be in Auckland for 2 weeks over Easter work before getting back to the cruise ships. ---------------------------------- 5. Wayne Dobson Publishes New Booklet For Magicians ---------------------------------- Message from Chris Banks (UK) Wayne Dobson, Britain's top TV comedy magician, has just launched a brand new booklet 'Dobson's Choice' featuring 13 easy-to-master close up routines ideal for the professional and amateur alike. Published by DTrick A5, Soft-back, 20 pages, Reviewed by Roy Johnson for Goodliffe's Abracadabra. Let there be no mistake - this book is brilliant! Its appearance and production is quite staggering for such a slim book. Its multi-colour cover exudes quality and the inclusive photograph of Wayne's smiling face and twinkling eyes create an excitement of expectancy even before the book Is opened! When you do manage to tear yourself away from the cover (back & front!) your expectations will be surpassed because the material detailed inside is superb. You may now be thinking that Roy Johnson is going 'over the top', but I genuinely believe that to any performer, professional or amateur, this book is (as Ken Brooke would have said) Gold Dust. The 13 tricks are superbly created and honed to perfection by Wayne himself during countless performances; on stage, cabaret, his TV series, TV guest appearances, close-up, lectures and social events. Wayne's choice of Stephen Tucker to put his thoughts and actions onto paper was truly inspired because each and every one of the 13 items is written with great clarity. Thanks in part to the two-column layout and intriguing balance between black, white and grey printing. The remarkable thing to me is the total elimination of sleights to achieve the effects, without any loss of effect or entertainment. Of the 13 Items there are 10 card tricks of Infinite variety, including one feature 'stand up' as used by Wayne over many years at top venues around the world. The three remaining items feature coins, 'objects' and borrowed ring. One small 'carp' could be the lack of Illustrations, but Stephen's concise and well written explanations leave nothing to the imagination. To order your copy of Dobson's Choice send a blank email to booklet@waynedobson.co.uk for details. ------------------------------------------------------- 6. Tour In And Around Waikato/Rotorua ------------------------------------------------------- Message from Ray Cooper (NZ) I have just finished a successful tour in and around Waikato/Rotorua. I performed in 19 schools over 5 days for World Vision promoting the 20 hour famine. I knew most schools expected a speaker. It was great to present the message using magic, ventriloquism and sound effects. The response was great. Very tiring, but VERY rewarding! ---------------------------------- 7. The Magic Circle Collectors' Day ---------------------------------- Message from Edwin A Dawes (UK) 25 MAY 2002 The programme for this year's Magic Circle Collectors' Day, to be held at the Centre for the Magic Arts, Euston, on 25 May, is now finalised and promises to offer another splendid occasion for collectors, historians, and all magic enthusiasts. It is an open event and non-members of The Magic Circle are welcome to attend. From the U.S.A. Tad Ware makes a welcome return and will be presenting a superbly illustrated talk on "The Scrapbooks of Carl Hertz," in which he will present convincing evidence that Hertz was a much better conjurer than he is currently given credit for. Tad is the owner of Hertz's scrapbooks, which cover the performer's career and provide the basis for the presentation. Dr Philip Butterworth, Reader in Medieval Theatre at the University of Leeds and author of Theatre of Fire, will be delving back into the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries with his talk on "Brandon, Feats and Hocus Pocus: Jugglers Three." It promises to uncover new information on these early English performers. Dr Roger Woods will relate a curious and amusing story relating to the misadventure that befell one of Scotland's most colourful performers when he played Blackburn with "Dr Walford Bodie and the Case of the Strange Electrical Suit." To enlighten everyone on a medium that is not usually associated with the performance of magic, one of its seasoned practitioners, John Wade, will take as his topic "Radio Magic." Finally, attention will be focused on another great Scottish conjurer when the Chairman of Collectors' Day, Eddie Dawes, in association with Bobby Bernard and John Derris, provide their "Tribute to John Ramsay," whose legendary sleight-of-hand and incredible misdirection dazzled the world of magic. Tickets for Collectors' Day, including lunch, are available from The Magic Circle, 12 Stephenson Way, London NW1 2HD. Price £22.50. Box Office Telephone: 020 7388 6480 Fax 020 7387 5114. Payment may be made by cheque (payable to 'The Magic Circle') or by Visa / Mastercard. ---------------------------------- 11. The Orchante Saga #67, 68 & 69 ---------------------------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi On tour with the .Spectacular '74. Fun and tribulations! Twenty City and town centres, from Motueka at the top end of the South Island of New Zealand to Invercargill, the most Southerly city - it was quite a run. The tour ran, with other 'ports of call' in-between - up the East coast from Timaru, Christchurch, Blenheim etc., across to Nelson, Motueka and then down the West coast from Westport, Greymouth, Queenstown, Invercargill and worked our way back up the East coast - Dunedin, Alexandra, Omarama etc. The Travelling arrangements were; 'Prentice' (the band) travelled in their own van, which carried all their instruments and sound equipment, the promotions manager Bxxx - who worked for Eddie Brooks, had his own car and we had ours - a Humber Hawk. To make things interesting and to prevent boredom whilst travelling, the artists/band members would switch cars in which to travel. One day we would have Craig Scott and Angela Ayers with us the next it could be Brendan Dugan and a couple of the band members - it was a good arrangement and worked well until we got to Greymouth, when the oil rings blew in our 'trusty' Humber Hawk (Bloody 'Murphy' strikes again). We left the car in Greymouth -to sort out at the end of the tour. Jumping into Bxxx's car was not the most pleasant of experiences. He was the most personable and likeable of chaps but unfortunately he suffered from a medical condition that tended, through no fault of his own, to insult one's olfactory senses somewhat - it was in fact, way beyond the bounds of etiquette! Even within minutes of having had a bath/shower his odoriferous 'fragrance' - in simple language, his potent body odour, could - ''KNOCK A BUZZARD OFF A 'SHIT' WAGON'' (American slang for old fashioned sewage collection, by horse and cart)! In N.Z. it was more politely called - THE 'HONEY' WAGON. Aw c' mon, it's history! To gain some sort of relief from the unpleasant stench that emanated from the poor fellow's body, it was wise to have two windows partly wound down to create fresh airflow through the car. It was therefore somewhat of a mixed blessing when, on our way to Queenstown (for a Sunday night show) - somewhere south of the Haast Pass, on a freezing cold day, a passing car threw up a stone that totally shattered the window screen. The glacial temperature that came off the Southern Alps and later, the 'REMARKABLES' (The mountain range that surrounds Queenstown), together with the wind that howled through the car, even at low-speed, chilled us right through to the bone marrow! We stopped at a store on the side of the road and bought every newspaper that they had, stuffing them underneath shirts, trousers, tops and dresses - protection from those freezing conditions, they didn't help much. FOUR HOURS LATER, when we finally arrive at him Queenstown, we must have resembled 'ice statues' we sure felt like it. It took some thawing out before we were ready for the show that night, and everybody except Angela Ayers and myself wound up with colds, bad chests and sore throats, after that Antarctic like experience! Brendan Dugan, apart from singing, was also the Compere for the show and for some reason on this particular night, decided to appoint himself as -"Me 'BIG CHIEF' - Sound Technician"! Now there is one thing I just cannot stand, and that is someone, ANYONE - MEDDLING OR PLAYING AROUND WITH MY SOUND SETTINGS, ON MY OWN SOUND SYSTEM - ESPECIALLY DURING MY PERFORMANCE! I have NEVER stumped off stage during my show in the middle of such a calamity, I was far too professional for that, but afterwards? Woe-betide all concerned - I have been known to cause minor riots! Sound and lighting men throughout 'Club Land' in Sydney Australia, in fact all of New South Wales, Qeensland etc., during the Seventies and Eighties - when we were living there, quickly learnt to -'Leave Things Alone, where 'The Amazing Orchanté' was concerned'! Here in Great Britain, I was especially 'feared' by D. J 's in Disco Clubs from one end of the country to the other, including North and Southern Ireland, and the Continent, from the top of Norway to the Island of Crete! They all quickly learnt that you "DON'T mess with 'ORCHANTÉ'S' sound"! (I've digressed)! Nothing is more off-putting when performing to split timed music, for the volume to be suddenly turned down to the point of inaudibility - then gradually turned up again so that you can only JUST hear the music. Instantly, everything goes flat and the excitement that has been generated by your music as well as your performance has gone - not just for you but more importantly, your audience. Page 68 The impact could be likened to watching say -'The Lord of the Rings' at the movies when, right in the middle of a most dramatic scene, with all the ensuing bangs and crashes etc. the sound suddenly goes off! I can guarantee that YOU would be left feeling - irritated, aggrieved and 'out of it'! During the interval, by which time my fury had increased tenfold, I had Brendan bailed up in a corner - threatening to remove certain parts of his anatomy that would have a dramatic effect on his ability to impregnate - from then on! My Maori blood was on the boil, as was my temper, I was seething. He was so terrified, as well he should have been, that he started crying but what really galled me was when he screamed for Veronica, who came up and put her arms around him - protecting him from me with a "There, There, the 'Bad Man' will go away soon"! I did, in disgust! HE NEVER TOUCHED MY SOUND SYSTEM AGAIN. Looking back now, I may have been a bit rough with him but I do like to think that it was a lesson well learnt that perhaps, may have stood him in good steed in latter years. Veronica and I were only 31 years of age when we did this tour - my God, that's almost 28 years ago, it sounds worse when you say 'over a quarter of a century' - everybody else was in their twenties - except Angela who was 18/19yrs.old. The cheeky 'bitch' called us 'Mum and Dad '! We have fond memories of 'Tangles' and Angela Ayers sitting on the end of our bed in various hotels, after shows - listening to ghost stories that they insisted Veronica relate to them (she probably got them from her Scottish mother), for the life of me I can't remember why, now. Perhaps it was because Tangles told Angela about the strange 'goings-on', in the house in Timaru. One night while she was relating some story to them, she noticed that the bedroom door was swinging slightly in a draft. Veronica asked Tangles if he had closed the door when he and Angela had came in. When he replied, "Yes", Veronica said, "Strange, it's open now", both he and Angela went white - she was almost as skittish as he was. Poor Tangles - in almost every hotel that we stayed, somebody would find some reason to convince him that 'bizarre things' happened there. I remember one hotel that had a trap door right in the middle of the narrow foyer. The trap was full of sand so one of the band members (who were all Tangles mates) stuck a couple of boots into it and then told Tangles that a skeleton was buried underneath them - HE BELIEVED IT. Another time, we made sure that Tangles was kept it in the bar while I, using a bit of magical ingenuity, tied one end of black thread onto a coat hanger in his wardrobe - in such a way that when it was pulled, all the other coat hangers would fall off as well. The thread ran from his wardrobe out the door and along the corridor to the next bedroom. Later that night, after everyone had gone to bed, we waited for an hour then pulled the thread. The resultant clanging and clashing as the coat hangers hit the bottom of the wardrobe and Tangles terrified screams was music to our ears! Entertainers and musicians can be such 'Evil Bastards' at times - THATS SHOWBIZ! There was only in one 'BAD THING' during the whole tour, apart from the Dugan/sound episode; it was a review of the show in Nelson. I will repeat here word-for-word. It was headed: - UNSPECTACULAR 'SPECTACULAR' Sunday evening's family variety spectacular '74 failed to come up to the standard now expected of professional New Zealand entertainers. With the one exception the standard of presentation was disappointingly amateurish. THE ONLY ACT, WHICH MANAGED TO SALVAGE THE SHOW, WAS THAT OF 'ORCHANTÉ ', HYPNOTIST, SWORD SWALLOWER, MAGICIAN AND A CLEVER MIMIC. He was the sole performer to hold an otherwise restless crowd quiet while he digested swords up to their hilts and swallowed flaming torches only to relight them with regurgitated flame seconds later. In the second half he mimed songs like "My boomerang won't come back" and "Well Goodness Gracious Me!" to the obvious delight of the 600 audience. Others who appeared were Craig Scott, the Reflections, Angela Ayers, Prentice and Brendan Dugan, who compered the show. Page 69 Craig Scott sang most of his more popular hits but Michael Jackson's "Ben" got him the most applause. He sang that well. Angela Ayers pranced and cavorted her way across a stage. The days of kicking off the shoes and donning a straw hat belonged to the Maria Dallas era of six or seven years ago and it is a pity Miss Ayers is not confident enough in her own ability to entertain without this. Prentice, the backing group really showed how far they have to go before they become professionals in the true sense of the word. No matter how many times they have seen the act or how bored they are with Miss Ayers' back, there is no excuse for bad manners on stage. If they wanted to hold private conversations or if they found the roof of the stage more interesting than the music they were playing, this should not become obvious to the audience. Comparisons are odious, true, but it is difficult not to compare the supposed professionalism of the show with the Val Doonican show, which was here last week. Doonican is an international star with years of experience but if New Zealand entertainers want a good national following, they will have to take a look at the image they are presenting. Angela Ayers said after the show they were tired and the audience last night just didn't want to know. Good audience response evoked a similar response from the stage, she said. But that was not entirely true. Professionals create an empathy with the audience. Last night's show barely got off the ground. -S.C. -POSTSCRIPT- Personally, I think that the critic was who did this review was being grossly unfair. Yes, a band should always look interested, whether they are or not but apart from that, I KNOW that it was a great show, with some very talented New Zealand performers, who were right at the 'top of the tree' or were heading that way, at the time. Bloody critics! They're all ..s out there! My mate Martin, who comes and stays with us on a regular basis, told me the other day that when reading the saga's, he has great fun looking at the various posters that are displayed around the walls here in the spare bedroom (see page 64 - last paragraph), picking out the names that he's reading about. He is sure going to have a field day with this one, as all their photographs are on display as well! ------------------------------------- 13.
