Mark Wilson TV Shows On Website - Streaming Video ---------------------------------- Message from Mark Wilson (US) Remember when you used to have to wait and wait to see a Mark Wilson illusion performance on TV? Now, streaming video of a different Mark Wilson illusion is available each week on his website, www.markwilsonmagic.com This is the first weekly streaming video of illusion performances, an innovation likely be welcomed by magicians around the world. The first illusion on the website is THE WALL OF GLASS, invented by Alan Wakeling, and introduced by Mark on a Magic Circus TV Special in the early 1970s. Next up is Wilson's famous DOLL TO LIFE, which debuted on the Magic Land of Allakazam in 1961. The website shows an updated, color presentation with an excellent performance by Bev Bergeron, as Rebo the Clown. Then comes THE MOTLEY MAN, followed by Wilson's version of the Dante masterpiece BACKSTAGE WITH THE MAGICIAN. The performance segments come from Wilsons' vast video library of The Magic Land of Allakazam network TV series, the Magic Circus network TV specials, the Magic of Mark Wilson syndicated TV series and many other television and theatrical productions produced around the world. Some of these illusions are original, others are classic, and many haven't been seen in years. Greg Mulvey of Presto Productions is handling the streaming video duties. The first two volumes of the new Mark Wilson on Illusions video course, the first-ever series of videos teaching the performance of illusions, have been well-received. A third volume, Levitations, is now in production. Mark Wilson also now has a free Email newsletter for which you can sign up on his website. www.markwilsonmagic.com ------------------------------------- 4. Rick Del Vecchio, Chairman, has graciously agreed to allow entrance on Sunday morning to those who wish to attend the meeting without their need to register for the convention. The meeting will take place Sunday, November 4th at 9:30 a.m. at: Ramada Plaza Marco Polo Beach Resort 19201 Collins Ave. Miami Beach, FL 33160 305-932-2233 Feel free to call me if you have any questions at 305-552-1675 or e-mail me at merlina17@aol.com www.Merlina.com ---------------------------------- 7. 2002 South African Magic Championships ---------------------------------- Message from Craig Mitchell Convention Director The 2002 South African Magic Championships is to be hosted by the College of Magic from the 21st - 24th March 2002 at the Grand West Casino & Entertainment World in Cape Town. Ken had a very early exposure to both the theatre and to magic. Having parents who were interested in Opera and Operetta, he was taught singing from an early age, making his first appearance on stage in an operetta when he was only 6 years old. Somewhere, those early days, he was either taught, or picked up, some simple card tricks. Around 1950 he saw "The Great Benyon" performing with his large show that had been so successful in Ireland. After this, the 'magic bug hit hard and has never let go. Benyon is responsible for a lot of the interest in magic in New Zealand, along with Sorcar (Snr.), who spent many months touring New Zealand in the 1950's. Ken joined his first magic society, The Otago Magic Circle, on his 15th birthday, 15 being the minimum age to get in, combining talents on the stage with singing and dancing. In 1958 he taught himself to juggle in order to add interest to the overture of the 'musical "Carousel" and it wasn't until the show moved into theatre that he realised that with the spotlights on him, he was blind and couldn't see the balls. He had been experimenting with a fire eating act and it was this act that hurriedly went into the Carousel overture. His work as a Telecommunications Engineer was calling him, away from his native land and 1968 saw him leave for the Pacific Islands. The local natives thought that this strange person who could eat fire was something of a God. During this time he experimented with Ventriloquism but had to give it up when his audience fled in panic the first time he tried it, because they thought the doll was a Ju-iu (Spirit doll). In 1978 Ken shifted to England and became a regular Monday nighter at the Magic Circle, which he had joined in 1970. Upon his shift to the Hornchurch area in the middle of that year, he joined the llford Magical Society, where he became a founder member of the group, "The Magician's Entertain" He is a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, an Associate of the Inner Magic Circle and is proud to belong to the Ilford Magical Society. His travels overseas bring him into contact with many magicians in all parts of the world. ---------------------------------- 10. How About A Drink - A Card Trick By Ken Ward ---------------------------------- Message from Message from Andy Fairbairn A card trick by Ken Ward I do not know how I came to get this card trick. I do not remember being shown it by any one. I just know that I have been doing it for the past 30 or so years. (Yes, I really am that old. It is just that good clean healthy living keeps me looking young.) I have never seen it in print. I have never seen it sold. I do however; reserve the commercial rights to it. This trick has bought me countless drinks over the years. My first sets of cards were simply hand-painted onto blank face playing card stock. Effect Four cards are laid before a spectator who is asked to touch any one of the Four cards. The three cards that are left are turned over, one at a time. The magician says, "We are going past a pub," (turn over first card which reads "How about a drink"). When I say, "How about a drink," you say (turn over the second card which reads "Not a bad idea") "not a bad idea". Then we come to the question (turn over the third card which roads "Who pays?") "who pays? Please turn over the card that you chose. (The spectator turns over his card, which reads "I do"). Make mine a whisky please." Operation Place the cards, face down, in order, from the spectator's left to right. Ask the spectator to touch any card. It is a little known fact, but a normal, right-handed person, will usually go to the third card from the left. His other choice will be the second from the left. If he goes for the second from the left and is subsequently asked to choose two more he will not choose the third from the left. A normal left-handed person does the reverse. If the person takes the card, second from the left, ask him to push towards you and then choose another, again pushing it towards you, then a third towards you. He has now left behind the card you want him to have. Tell him he has made a perfectly free choice of a Card, which he will keep and has chosen three cards for you to use. If the spectator in effect has magician's Choice. If the spectator should foul up the works and leave the wrong card simply pick up all the cards and say "Bother it, I will show you something else". This perplexes the spectator who doesn't know what you were trying to do anyway and he will think that you are a little mad. (If you weren't you wouldn't be doing these crazy things.) Patter 'I'd like to show you an experiment with four cards. Now, 'sir, you don't mind me calling you ''sir', do you? It's only in fun. Just touch one of the cards, any card quickly now, we haven't got all day. Okay, thank you. (If he has chosen the correct card.) Just keep your finger on it, will you, so I can't cheat and change it on you. (if he hasn't chosen the right card.) ''Okay, thank you, Just push the card towards me and then touch any other card, OK, push that one towards me and touch a third, push it to me. OK, (assuming he has left behind the good card), "you have chosen three cards for me. I could not have known which cards you were going to choose. Place your finger on the one you have left for yourself so that I can't cheat and change it on you. "We are going past a pub when I say, 'how about a drink' You say, 'not a bad idea', then we come to the question of "who pays?" Please turn over the card that you freely chose and read out loud and clear what (He says 'I do'.) Thanks a lot mine's a pint. (Maginote: This effect originally sold by Davenports after the war. Ed.) Ken Died at 17:15 Hrs on Monday 28th September 1998 at the age of 56. After complications for a minor operation ---------------------------------- 11. History Of The FMA ---------------------------------- Message from Maria Ibanez - Merlina17@aol.com OK everyone - time again for me to pick the channels of your memory....still trying to put together a history of the FMA and PLEASE I NEED EVERYONE'S HELP. I've done my best to sort through and digest the records, such as they are, available to present. I've been able to trace the year elected, President, Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer from the present all the way back to 1974. Before that all I know is that Tim Arango was the First President of the FMA way back in 1966. Unfortunately many of the early records were either destroyed or lost when we lost Nevin Hoefert. Can anyone help through researching your past copies of convention programs, mailings, old letters, signed membership cards or other such memorabilia? How about your own memories, does anyone remember that far back? I'm counting on all you guys..... Thanks in advance for your help, here is the list so far, such as it is at this point... Yr. The Orchante Saga #48 ---------------------------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Anything good in life is either illegal, immoral or fattening! I couldn't believe it! Never in all the years, before or since, during the untold thousands of times in which I have produced my thimble, have I received such a 'violent' reaction - I was, gobsmacked - well, quite literally, I was! Muttering apologies for what, I really didn't know, I snuck off to my room and waited for the management, police, fire brigade, SAS, riot squad, army and ambulance to come hammering on my door. They didn't, of course! The hotel lounge room was packed for the first night show; it went down a storm! Assisting me was my girl - friend, Sally Phillips (now Metzger). Please note the hyphen. Perhaps I had better explain. Sally is my friend - my buddy, has been for the best part of 30 years - she is also most definitely a lady, all woman, and a beautiful one at that! I trust that clears the air, we don't want any nasty rumours starting up now, do we! In actual fact, back in the Sixties, Sally occasionally worked as an 'emergency' assistant for one or two other artists/magicians when the need arose and, she kept each one's trade secrets - a lady to be trusted and very professional to boot! Luv ya Sal! After the stage show I cleaned up - showered, then headed for the private bar where I spent the rest of the evening, performing - 'the show after the show' - close-up magic at the bar, until two or three in the morning. This was my custom, night after night and word soon got around. Unofficial guests starting to find their way in and the hotel staff were also there for the fun, except a certain redhead (with a great right hand) - who would perch herself on a bar-stool, with a girlfriend beside her, at the other end of the bar, as far away from me as she possibly could, while I was, 'creating magical miracles' - oh, the insult!!! Every time I caught her eye, 'icy daggers' flew in my direction. Once, I went up to her to try and clear the air but to no avail - I was told, in no uncertain terms that I was, has far she was concerned, "rude, crude and totally unattractive". One night, about 20 or 30 businessmen, who were staying in the hotel, had crammed themselves into the private bar (they were from all over New Zealand, and were in Auckland for some sort of convention.) They had seen the show in the main lounge and somebody had told them about my 'magic session' that followed later. Somehow, the subject of hypnotism came up and before you knew it, I was presenting a fully-fledged hypnotic 'stage show' in the bar!!! With several of the businessmen as my willing subjects, I set up a gangster scenario, convinced one that he was - Al Capone and that the rest were all members of his gang. From there on I didn't have to do much, they all interacted with each other with ' Al Capone' setting up a plan to rob a bank and giving various members of his 'gang' jobs to do - in between grabbing some body by the front of their shirt and demanding that they clean his spats! It was a hoot! Turns out that my 'Al Capone' was actually a jeweller who came from a small town - Morrinsville or Te Aroha- somewhere like that. (There's a follow- up about him - I'll tell you later) Eventually, at 2 am, the bar manager had to close the bar. One of the businessmen suggested that we transfer the entire 'party' to his suite and carry on, which we did. At this juncture I must explain that where hypnotism shows are concerned, I am dead against using blue or filthy material - public shows should be clean wholesome fun for the whole family, end of story! Sure, I like my dirty jokes and blue movies as much as the next guy, but that is private, not public. Yes, it's OK to have a bit of fun with a close personal friend whom you have 'put under' hypnosis, but never at their personal expense, monetary or otherwise! (I've wanted to say that for some months now, after certain untrue comments were made about me, see page 9 of SAGA) Anyhow, the suite was packed with very happy and very inebriated, myself included - males, and only males. The hypnotic Show continued. Now, it was private. I've suggested to one of the subjects that the most beautiful blonde in the world was lying naked on the bed and as far as she was concerned, he was the only man on the world, for her. I'll leave the rest to your imagination. Suddenly, I became aware that the redhead, who didn't like thimbles, who thought I was rude crude and totally unattractive, had entered the room. I was so embarrassed - I put an immediate halt to the proceedings, went up to her and, practically on bended knees, begged her forgiveness - explaining that I had no idea there was a woman in the room, that what she had just witnessed, was the result of a bunch of very happily inebriated men, at an apparently all-male party, having an over-the-top good time - as we often do! You wouldn't believe it, but whatever, however I said it, from out the blue all was forgiven - this red-headed 'iceberg' had melted somewhat, deciding that I wasn't, after all, quite so rude, crude and totally unattractive as she first thought! Miracles will never cease! She was going to the staff room for a coffee so I invited myself to join her, made my excuses to the Business lads, and left the party. We had a good old chat where I discovered that not only was she the chief cashier for the hotel but also the head receptionist as well! I headed off to bed and collapsed. What a night! The shows at the 'Marina' had been so successful I was rebooked for the following week and as the heading of Page 47 states, "things" happened! To everybody's astonishment, and particularly to the chagrin of most of the Milford Marina's male staff, this magician/fire-eater had turned on the heat, somehow managing to melt the 'untouchable' redheads heart - and to add insult to injury, " THE BASTARD WAS A MARRIED MAN"! Whispers and theories abounded - "he's hypnotised her, he's a real magician" etc. etc. One night, the proverbial hit the fan. There are three accounts of what happened - Sharon's, (my ex-wife) Sally's and mine. According to Sharon, and she has more reason than anybody else to remember, I was sitting in the private bar having a quick drink with the 'redhead ' before the show when Sharon walked in, tapped me on the shoulder, and asked me for some drinking money. She says that I nearly 'died' on the spot! The 'redhead', quite sensibly, made herself scarce. What happened next is how Sally, a 'walking encyclopaedia', who is also endowed with a great memory, remembers it. Sally was unaware of the incident in the bar before the show consequently, well, I'll let Sally tell it in her own words, quote "I'm assisting you on stage and you were just about to do the sword swallowing when I saw Sharon walk in.. not good.. so, you swallowed the first short sword then, as you swallowed the big one, you quickly pulled the thing out and collapsed on the stage floor - much to the consternation of both the audience and your assistant - me!!! I bent over and said "Tom, are you o. k." to which you replied, "yeah, just get an ambulance". A couple of burly security chaps came and carried you off the stage too many ooh's and aah's from the astonished audience who thought they had just witnessed you practically killing yourself. Anyway, we got you into the manager's office and an ambulance was duly called and away you went, to the hospital. The rest of the story of course you know yourself." Unquote. Sally faxed me the above some time ago, and added "when I got off the phone last night I was killing myself laughing at the recollection of that night. It really was funny. I think you are right, it would make a good mention in the - SAGA". It sure as hell wasn't funny at the time! Continues next episode! ------------------------------------- 14.
