Editors Message ------------------------------------- Message from Alan Watson - The Magic One Malcolm Silverman's electronic magic article in last weeks e-zine was very well received by our readers. Malcolm tells me he's had some very positive feedback from his contribution. Skip Banks - The Balloon Man and Victor and Diamond (known for their famous dove act) have been booked as the support acts for this year's World Festival of Magic. Closer to the time of touring I will list the performing schedule. Chris Parkinson (Parky) celebrated his 59th birthday last Sunday with family and friends. Greg Hudson is currently on tour with his school show in the South Island. ------------------------------------- 2. Guy Cater Hypnotist Show held at the Power Station ------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany On 1st May Priscilla and I went to the Guy Cater Hypnotist Show held at the Power Station in Auckland. It was rated as an R18 Show. Most seats were taken, and I understand that the other nights were fully booked out. The show opened with The Mad Butcher doing some announcements, and 'Mad' and funny as ever. He tried to strangle me during his introduction before he introduced Martin Crump aka Harry Stump. Martin had put together a routine using a very long poem written by his father Barry Crump that was definitely R18 and some comedy songs. My favourite part of Martin's routine was the chat at the beginning about being a 'country' man and moving to the city. He finished with a parody of a song about 'pubic' hair, which was very clever. The audience on the night enjoyed it despite a few microphone problems (not the fault of the performer) After a fifteen-minute interval Guy Cater came on and was obviously the Star of the Show proving himself to be, without a doubt, the funniest hypnotist not only in New Zealand, but certainly one of the best in the World. After a quick induction he had every chair on stage full and subjects willing to do the most outrageous things. The show was full of Guy's original bits and pieces and the entire audience were in stitches throughout. For well over two hours Guy had the audience eating out of the palm of his hands. There are very few people with his manner and charm and making his subjects feel comfortable on stage. The show can only be described as an absolute riot of belly aching laughter. It is very rare to have a Kiwi audience applaud for so long and so loud at the end of any show, but they just didn't want to stop clapping at the end and there were calls for 'more ... more ... more... ". I'm sure Guy had enough material to keep going for another few hours but being a pro he knew when to leave the audience wanting more. In the audience that night I saw a few magicians and other Kiwi entertainers, and I know they will all agree that when it comes to New Zealand Entertainers, Guy Cater is the Best in the Business!!! ------------------------------------- 3. MAJOR virus warning ------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany Just a note about a MAJOR virus warning. DO NOT OPEN ANYTHING called ' I LOVE YOU' as it has just wiped out Netherlands and Europe emails. ------------------------------------- 15. Latest on love letter virus ------------------------------------- Message from Ed Hall Some info that I have sent on the current form of the love letter virus from my ISP and various colleagues I have who work in the IT security field. As the virus is relatively new, the full extent of its capabilities is still being learnt, but reports so far indicate the following: 1. It emails itself to all addresses in your outlook address book. 2. Original reports indicated that it or some of the variants destroyed or overwrite jpg images and mp3 music files, but recent reports indicates a much more severe list including .doc (yes, Word documents may be overwritten!). Infected files have the extension .vbs added to their original name. 3. More recent reports indicate that it or some of the variants attempts to load a password stealing trojan. Passwords in your cache may be emailed out. The variant mostly in New Zealand as of Friday is an email titled 'ILOVEYOU' - delete it without opening. This virus has already got into a number of New Zealand companies and resulted in mail server crashes. The existing virus protection software at the time did not alert to it. A number of local ISP's have added filters to attempt to stop the virus being spread. There are however more variants appearing at present with titles such as Virus Alert, Dangerous Virus Warning, Joke, Mothers Day Order Confirmation. They all have an attachment with an extension of .vbs. Up to date information should become available through sites such as http://www.mcafee.com http://www.symantec.com If you have virus software such as Norton Antivirus or McAfee, if you have not already done so today would be a good day to update it. Updated virus definition files are available that will detect and control the Loveletter virus and the variants so far identified. ------------------------------------- 16. Melbourne Convention ------------------------------------- Message from Paul Bowen All is looking great for the Melbourne Convention, here is just a short note to let you know some more details. More guest lecturers. We have just confirmed some more guests who will be sharing their wealth of knowledge with all of us. They are: Ross Skifington, Chuck Fayne, Raymond Crowe, Phil Cass, Chris McMillan and Dave Boyd. There are others but they are yet to confirm. Flea Market. You may have noticed on previous updates that we are holding a flea market, this will be held on Saturday over lunch and gives you a chance to sell some of your magic. The cost is $20 per space, just spread out your blanket and start selling. The idea came from New Zealand last year, it sounds like fun so we are going to give it a try. The flea market should also give everyone interested a chance to sell smaller priced items and still put the big-ticket items in the auction, Sunday morning. Competitions. There are still some vacancies but it is first in and our cut off is in 2 weeks. Here are the spaces left. Stage 1 spot, Under 18 stage 4 spots, Wandering 1 spot, Parlour 1 spot, Phil Cross Children's magic 2 spots, Ken Littlewood 3 spots, Under 18 close up 5 spots, Close up Cards 1 spot, Restaurant Magic 1 spot. Extra Intensive. Rene Lavand has offered to do an extra intensive before the convention. It would take place on the Friday Morning at aprox.. 10:00am. This intensive is only for a small group of 10 to 15 people and is $200 each. If you are interested contact Kristina at Bernards on 61(3)9670 9270. Please don't forget when booking flights that the convention starts at 3:30pm on Friday with a seminar on Childrens Magic, and the weekend finishes with the closing show ending at aprox.. 5:00pm on Monday. I hope to catch up with as many of you as possible in Melbourne next month. ------------------------------------- 17.
